Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for preventing the recovery of an electric arc between two adjacent parts and devoid of electrical insulation of at least two electrically conductive elements, for example between facing conductive elements which project from the surface of a connector body.
- the invention finds particular application in electrical or electronic components, such as connectors, implemented in a space environment or in conditions reproducing such an environment.
- electrical or electronic components intended to be implemented in any environment where an electric arc is likely to form between two conductive elements facing each other.
- the electrical or electronic components used in a space environment are often deteriorated because of the establishment of one or more arcs between the conductive elements they comprise.
- These conductive elements may be, for example, pins (also commonly called “pins”) of a male connector plug in a female connector, or the ends of cores of conductive wires which are stripped about 1 mm and welded or crimped in conductive metal tubes connected to the pins.
- Such conductive elements are arranged facing one another, in particular parallel to each other, and are separated by air or vacuum spaces.
- air constitutes an insulator under normal conditions of temperature and pressure
- the problem of avoiding arcing between the stripped portions of the conductive elements of the connectors is generally not present.
- air is insulating except in the case of an intense electric field or high humidity.
- a precursor phenomenon (filament, dust, ESD, high voltage, etc.) is likely to generate between the stripped parts of two conductive elements a local plasma.
- the latter while relaxing, will make the medium conductive and establish a short circuit between the two conductive elements.
- an intense electric field can be the cause of the generation of such a plasma.
- the invention therefore aims to prevent the formation, or at least the establishment of these arcs between two electrically conductive elements.
- the invention relates to a device for preventing the establishment of an electric arc between two adjacent parts and devoid of electrical insulation of at least two electrically conductive elements, the device comprising at least one part made of a material dielectric and having at least one through opening for accommodating at least one of said at least two electrically conductive elements, so as to surround at least one of said at least two adjacent portions and devoid of electrical insulation of said at least two electrically conductive elements.
- the device is remarkable in that the dielectric material in which the piece is made is deformable or sufficiently compressible.
- the device prevents the electrically conductive parts devoid of electrical insulation from being directly facing one another, at least partially filling the space between the conductive elements.
- the fact that the dielectric material in which the part is made is deformable or sufficiently compressible makes it possible in particular to adapt the shape of the part to the shape of the electrically conductive part of the conductive element which is devoid of electrical insulation.
- the device has the effect of preventing arcing when the connector is implemented in an environment where a plasma is likely to create and relax, such as a space environment.
- the part prevents the establishment of an electric arc in any direction around the electrically conductive portion devoid of electrical insulation, thanks to the fact that the part surrounds this electrically conductive portion.
- the dimensions and the shape of said part are adapted to ensure the enclosure of said portion devoid of electrical insulation in a closed walled enclosure of dielectric material;
- said closed walled enclosure made of dielectric material is delimited between said part, an electrically insulated part of said conductive element and a dielectric material wall of a connector to which said conductive element is connected; said closed walled enclosure of dielectric material is delimited between a first dielectric material wall of a connector in which said conductive element is mounted, a second dielectric material wall of a second connection connector with a conductive element, and said component clamped between said first and second walls;
- the piece is a sleeve, which allows to put it around a wire
- the piece has a height at least equal to the height of the part devoid of electrical insulation of the electrically conductive element that it surrounds, the height of said part being in particular between 3 and 10 mm;
- the piece is a ring
- the ring notably has a diameter substantially equal to or less than half the distance separating said at least two conductive elements
- the ring has a thickness between 0.5 and 3 mm, which corresponds to a sufficient or minimum thickness to fill the void around the driver, that is to say, to eliminate the line of sight between two conductors;
- the part is a plate having at least two through openings to accommodate each of said at least two electrically conductive elements; the piece is in particular mounted mobile about at least one of said at least two electrically conductive elements, between a first position where said piece is opposite said part devoid of electrical insulation of said electrically conductive element which it surrounds with on the one hand, and a second position where said at least two adjacent and non-electrically insulating portions of said electrically conductive elements are facing each other, on the other hand;
- the workpiece is held in position relative to said electrically conductive elements surrounded by frangible bridges intended to be broken during a first use and connecting the workpiece to a component which may be close to the electrically conductive elements;
- FIG. 1 is a perspective view from above of a male connector
- FIG. 2 is a perspective and bottom view of the connector of FIG.
- FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the connector of FIGS. 1 and 2 disposed in a housing, and partially connected to an electric cable comprising electrical wires
- FIG. 4 is a perspective view of an electrically conductive element of the connector illustrated in FIG.
- FIG. 3 on which is implemented a device according to a first embodiment according to the invention
- Figure 5 is a perspective view of three electrically conductive elements of the connector illustrated in Figure 3, on each of which is implemented a device according to a second embodiment according to the invention
- FIG. 6 is a partial sectional view of a connector on which a device according to a third embodiment according to the invention is implemented
- FIG. 7 illustrates in perspective a device according to a fourth embodiment in accordance with the invention. the invention.
- FIGS. 1 to 3 describe an example of an electronic component on which a device according to the invention can be implemented.
- FIGS. 4 to 7 describe various embodiments of a device according to the invention that can be implemented on the electronic component illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 3.
- Figures 1 to 3 show a male connector 1 may be implemented in a space environment (where an electric arc can be established between two electrically conductive elements facing).
- the connector 1 comprises, in a conventional manner, a casing 2 of trapezoidal section enclosing a connector body 3.
- the connector body 3 is made of dielectric material of the plastic material type, generally by molding.
- the body 3 has, on one of its surfaces 5, electrically conductive protruding connection pins 7 (FIG. 1), and on its other surface 9, recesses 11 of tubular shape and projections which are also electrically conductive.
- the tubular housings are intended to accommodate stripped ends 12 of electrically conductive wires 13 in order to hold them by welding 14 (see FIG. 3) for example, or by crimping according to a method known to those skilled in the art.
- Each pin 7 is connected to a tubular housing 11 in the mass of the body 3, so that each tubular housing constitutes an electrical connection between an electrically conductive wire 13 and a pin 7.
- the pins 7 are distributed in two rows offset with respect to one another.
- the housings 11 are also distributed in two rows offset with respect to one another. They each have a bevelled aperture facing outwardly of the connector body, to facilitate the introduction of stripped portions 12 son 13 to be welded there ( Figure 2).
- the housing 2, enclosing the body 3, has two openings 15 and 17 for, respectively, to pass through the tubular fixing housing 11 and allow access to the pins 7.
- the housing 2 has a peripheral flat flange 19 having bores 21. These allow the attachment of the connector in a box 23 which comprises the conductive wires 13 welded to the tubular housing 11.
- the wires 13 come from a cable 25 introduced into the box 23 through an opening 27 formed in the box.
- the box 3 protects the stripped portions 12 of the wires 13 and the welds 14, in particular by keeping the wires 13 in position thanks to the diameter of the opening 27 which is adjusted to the diameter of the cable 25, thus limiting the movements of the cable 25.
- FIGS. 4 to 7 describe several embodiments of the device according to the invention that can be implemented on the connector described above.
- FIG. 1 A first embodiment is shown in FIG. 1
- the device for preventing the establishment of an arc comprises several parts 29 each made of a dielectric material.
- the dielectric material is a deformable plastic material.
- the piece 29 is made in the form of a sleeve threaded around the stripped portion 12 of the electric wire 13.
- the piece 29 thus has an opening 30 through which the electric wire 13 passes.
- the opening 30 preferably has a diameter greater than or equal to that of the electric wires 13 so that the part 29 can be freely moved along the electric wire 13.
- the part 29 in a first position, the part 29 can be placed around the electrically conductive portion of the wire 13 which is devoid of electrical insulation, constituted by the stripped portion 12, of the weld 14 and the tubular housing 11, while being in abutment against the surface 9 of the body 3 of dielectric material of the connector.
- the part 29 can be placed at a distance from this electrically conductive portion of the wire 13 which is devoid of electrical insulation, leaving the latter accessible for, for example, to repair a defective weld.
- the tubular piece 29 has a height such that it completely covers the tubular housing 11, the weld 14, the stripped portion of the wire 13 and a portion of the sheath of the wire 13.
- the piece 29 completely covers, from the surface 9 of the connector body, all the conductive parts of the projecting elements with respect to the surface 9, which guarantees optimum insulation and prevents any arcing from these conductive parts .
- the height of the element 29 is greater than the height of the conductive parts of the projecting elements placed end to end.
- the height of the element 29 is here between 3 and 10 mm in the context of a connector where the housing 11 have a height substantially equal to 2.5 mm. It should be understood, however, that the heights indicated are only in the context of an exemplary embodiment and that the invention is not limited thereto.
- the dimensions, the shape and the elastically deformable or compressible material of the part 29 can be chosen so that once in position this piece substantially matches the shape of the sheathed portion of the wire 13, and if appropriate those of the stripped portion 12 of the wire 13, the weld 14 and the tubular housing 11 without leaving any space with these elements, while preferably allowing the movement and positioning of the piece 29 along the wire 13.
- the tubular housing 11, the 14 and the stripped portion of the wire 13 are then completely enclosed in a closed dielectric chamber defined by the body 3 in dielectric material of the connector, the piece 29 bearing against the surface 9 of the body 3 and the sheathed portion of the wire 13 gripped by the piece 29.
- FIG. 5 to describe a second embodiment of a device according to the invention.
- the device according to the invention comprises a part 31 which comprises a plate 34 consisting of a substantially rectangular wall, which is made of a flexible dielectric material, elastically deformable or compressible.
- the plate 34 has, on either side of the wall of which it is made, tubular elements 33 forming chimneys.
- the tubular elements 33 are integral with the plate 34.
- the tubular elements 33 are thus interconnected by material bridges 35.
- Each tubular element has a through opening 32 in which is inserted a conductive wire 13 and the housing 11 wherein the wire is fixed.
- the openings 33 each have an internal diameter substantially greater than the external diameter of the electrically conductive parts of the wires 13 which are devoid of electrical insulation, in other words bare portions 12 of the conductive wires 13, welds 14 and housings 11.
- Each tubular element 33 can thus accommodate an electrically conductive portion devoid of insulation of an electrically conductive element.
- the part 31 thus produced fills or partitions the spaces between the electrically conductive parts of the son 13 and thus prevents the establishment of an electric arc between them.
- FIG. 1 The device comprises insulating pieces 37 made in the form of rings in a flexible or compressible dielectric material.
- the device comprises as many parts 37 as the connector comprises pins 7. Each part 37 is fitted around a pin 7.
- the rings 37 have a thickness of between 0.5 and 1 mm.
- Such a thickness makes it possible to isolate a pin 7 on a height greater than that of a pin portion 8 which will remain bare and devoid of electrical insulation when the pins 7 of the male connector will be inserted into the correspondingly shaped receiving housings a female connector (not shown).
- the diameter of a ring 37 is substantially equal to or less than half of the distance separating Ieux pins 7 contiguous. In order to hold rings 37 in position on pins 7 before first use, rings 37 are clamped around pins 7.
- the rings 37 can, however, be moved along the pins 7 to bear against the surface 5 of the body 3 under the action of a force.
- the surface of the body of the female connector coming into contact with the rings repels the latter until they collapse on the surface 5 of the body 3.
- the rings 37 are deformed between the surface of the body of the male connector 1 and that of the body of the female connector in their insertion position.
- the rings 37 constitute seals defining with the dielectric material surfaces of the male and female connectors closed dielectric enclosures which isolate from each other the conductive portions 8 of the pins 7.
- the rings 37 prevent any establishment of arcs between the pin 8 parts 7 of the male connector which would not be completely inserted into the female connector.
- FIG. 7 illustrates such a variant.
- the device comprises a plate 39 made of a flexible dielectric material.
- the plate 39 has as many orifices 41 as the connector 1 has pins 7.
- each orifice 41 is made in the plate 39 in such a way that each can accommodate a pin 7. To do this, each orifice 41 has a diameter substantially greater than that of the pins 7.
- the plate 39 is traversed by the pins 7 when it is implemented on the connector 1, by insertion of the pins 7 in the orifices 41.
- the plate 39 is also disposed against the surface 5 of the body 3 of the connector 1.
- the flexible plate 39 of dielectric material is crushed between the dielectric material surface 5 of the body 3 of the male connector 1 and the dielectric material surface of the connector female and defines with these surfaces closed walled enclosures of dielectric material which isolate from each other the conductive portions 8 of the pins 7.
- the plate 39 thus makes it possible to fill or partition the spaces between the pins 7, so that no electric arc primer is possible.
- the flexible dielectric material in which the plate 39 is made is rubber or a flexible equivalent adapted to a space environment, so that the plate 39, crushed between the two surfaces of the body of connectors, while deforming, perfectly marries the contours of the pins 7 and the surfaces of the bodies of the two connectors between which the plate is sandwiched.
- the plate 39 In order to facilitate the installation of the plate 39, provision is made to predispose the plate 39 to the connector 1, that is to say that the connector is equipped with a plate 39 whose holes 41 are each arranged opposite of a pin 7. It should be understood that the invention is not limited to this embodiment.
- the plate could marry directly the shape of existing male and female connectors. This would only add the insulating element without making a specific connector.
- the plate 39 is connected to an element 43 of the connector 1 by frangible bridges 40 which can be broken at the time of connection of the male connector 1 with a female connector.
- the frangible bridges 40 are broken and the plate 39, arranged in such a way that the pins 7 each face an orifice 41, is pressed against the surface 5 of the body 3 of the connector.
- the device according to the invention makes it possible to prevent the establishment of an electric arc between two electrically conductive elements opposite which are locally deprived of electrical insulation. It should be understood, however, that the invention is not limited to the embodiments which have been presented above.
- the invention could also, for example, include a part made from two symmetrical half-shells.
- the two half-shells would be made of dielectric material.
- the two half-shells would be fixed together in a plane of symmetry by being reported on either side of the electrically conductive elements devoid of electrical insulation.
- Such an embodiment would have the advantage of allowing the mounting of the device according to the invention around the son of a connector without having, for example, to disassemble the son.
- the dimensions given by way of example above are in no way limiting.
- it could be provided an insulating piece whose height would be equal to the height of the conductive parts of the projecting elements placed end to end.
