Definitions
- the present invention relates to a brush seal having a sealing element comprising a plurality of fibers or wires connected at a fiber or wire end to a fiber or wire bundle, wherein the fiber or wire end is disposed in a mounting recess of a housing, and one of the fiber or wire end of opposite, free end of the fiber or wire bundle protruding from the housing.
- the invention further relates to a method for assembling a brush seal.
- Brush seals of the type mentioned are known in a large variety and are used for example in gas turbines to seal the gap between a housing and a rotor rotating at a relatively high speed against leakage.
- a corresponding brush seal is z.
- a disadvantage of the known brush seals is that the basic stiffness of the brush seal required for the respective application must be set with appropriate measures even before the brush seal is installed in the respective machine. So far, brush seals are being built with a fixed free fiber length. Free fiber length is understood to be that section of the fiber or wire bundle which is not surrounded by a clamping element or a welding or adhesive region for fixing and bundling the individual fibers and wires. So z.
- a brush seal according to the invention comprises a sealing element comprising a plurality of fibers and wires, wherein the fibers and wires are connected at a fiber or wire end to a fiber or wire bundle, wherein the fiber or wire end is disposed in a mounting recess of a housing, and a fiber end or wire bundle opposite the fiber or wire end and protruding out of the housing.
- at least one projection is formed on an inner contour of the mounting recess, such that the fiber or wire bundle is clamped at a predefined distance to the fiber or wire end by the projection.
- the basic stiffness of the fiber or wire bundle or of the seal is set only after or with the assembly of the brush seal into the housing.
- the fibers or wires are clamped between one or more projections of the inner contour of the mounting recess of the housing.
- the distance to the fiber or wire end can be varied, so that the free fiber length and thus the basic stiffness of the brush seal can be adapted individually to the requirements of the environment to be sealed.
- the brush seal can be manufactured with normal manufacturing tolerances, since the possibly very high basic stiffness of the
- Brush seal is achieved only after installation of the brush seal.
- both the tightness and the heat generation can be adjusted without the brush seal having to be paired with a shaft.
- the costs for manufacturing as well as for assembly and the logistical effort significantly reduced.
- the brush seal can be made with long fibers that have a low basic stiffness.
- the fibers or wires are clamped by the protrusion (s) in the mounting recess in a predetermined area so that the clamped fibers or wires work with shorter fibers corresponding to a brush seal.
- the projection may be formed as a on the inner contour at least partially circumferential projection. But it is also possible that at least two projections formed on the inner contour are formed.
- the fiber or wire end has a welding or adhesive area for fixing and bundling of the fibers and wires.
- different types of sealing elements can be used.
- At least a first support surface is formed on the inner contour of the mounting recess in the region of an outlet opening for the free end of the fiber or wire bundle on which the free end is at least partially supported.
- a second support surface is formed on the region of the inner contour opposite the support surface for the free end of the fiber or wire bundle.
- the support surfaces of the housing advantageously take over a support or covering function, which are usually exercised in known brush seals by each separate elements.
- the first support surface may also be formed spaced from the free end of the fiber or wire bundle. As a result, an undesirable contact between the housing and opposite machine parts is advantageously avoided.
- the housing having the mounting recess is formed in several parts or in one piece.
- the housing into which the brush seal is installed may be a component of a stationary or stationary gas turbine, a compressor, a steam turbine or a machine tool.
- the brush seal can be used in all machines where a gap between two components of the machine must be sealed.
- a method for mounting a brush seal in a housing comprises the following steps: a) providing a brush seal with a sealing element comprising a plurality of fibers or wires which are connected to a fiber or wire bundle at a fiber or wire end and a fiber or wire end opposite, projecting from the housing free end of the fiber or wire bundle; and b) inserting and fixing the brush seal in a mounting recess of the housing, wherein the fiber or wire bundle is clamped at a predefined distance to the fiber or wire end by at least one projection and the projection is formed on an inner contour of the mounting recess.
- the basic stiffness of the fiber or wire bundle or of the seal is adjusted only after or during the assembly of the brush seal into the housing.
- the fibers or wires are clamped between one or more projections of the inner contour of the mounting recess of the housing.
- the distance of the projection or the projection to the fiber or wire end can be varied, so that the free fiber length and thus the basic stiffness of the brush seal can be adapted individually to the requirements of the environment to be sealed.
- the housing in which the brush seal is installed may be a component of an aircraft or stationary gas turbine, a compressor, a steam turbine or a machine tool.
- the brush seal can be used in all machines where a gap between two components of the machine must be sealed.
- FIG. 1 shows a schematic sectional view of a brush seal 10.
- the brush seal 10 consists of a sealing element 12, wherein the sealing element 12 comprises a plurality of fibers or wires, which are connected at a fiber or wire end 16 to a fiber or wire bundle 14.
- the fiber or wire end 16 is disposed in a mounting recess 22 of a two-piece housing 20a, 20b.
- the fiber or wire bundle 14 protrudes out of the housing 20a, 20b.
- the individual fibers or wires consist of metal, a metal alloy, plastic or ceramic.
- the configuration of the projections 24, 26 is such that the fiber or wire bundle 14 is clamped at a predefined distance to the fiber or wire end 16 by the projections 24, 26. But it is also possible that a on the inner contour 18 of the mounting recess 22 circumferential projection is formed.
- clamping the fiber or wire bundle 14 results in a shortening of the so-called free fiber length, which changes the basic stiffness of the sealing element 12 and the fiber or wire bundle 14.
- the shortening of the free fiber length increases the basic rigidity of the brush seal 10 as a whole.
- the brush seal 10 prior to mounting in the housing 20a, 20b has a free fiber length Fv which is greater than the free fiber length Fm after the brush seal assembly.
- the sealing element 12 is inserted into a corresponding portion of the mounting recess 22 of one of the two housing parts 20a, 20b. Subsequently, the remaining housing part is connected to the first housing part, wherein the projections 24, 26, the fiber or Clamp wire bundles 14 at a predetermined distance from the fiber or wire end 16.
- the fiber or wire end 16 consists of a core wire 38 around which a plurality of fibers or wires are wound and a clamping element 36, the clamping element 36 serving to fix and bundle the fibers and wires.
- the clamping element 36 is designed as a clamping tube.
- a first support surface 32 is formed, at which the free end 30 is at least partially supported.
- a second support surface 34 for the free end 30 of the fiber or wire bundle 14 is formed.
- the first and second support surface 32, 34 thereby provide a support or covering function.
- the first support surface 32 is formed spaced from the free end 30 of the fiber or wire bundle 14, whereby an undesirable contact between the housing part 20b and opposite machine parts (not shown) is avoided.
