Claims (18)

  1. A pencil comprising
    a lead (14),
    a cartridge (12) for at least partially holding the lead (14),
    a protective cap (16) that has a device (28, 36) for shaping the lead, and
    a device (20, 22) responsive to fitment of the protective cap onto the cartridge for axial displacement of the lead with respect to the cartridge,
    characterised in that
    the device (28, 26) for shaping the lead (14) exerts no force upon the lead when in a rest position.
  2. The pencil according to Claim 1, characterised in that the device (28, 36) for shaping the lead (14) is responsive to fitment of the protective cap (16) onto the cartridge (12).
  3. The pencil according to Claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the fitment consists of pushing and/or screwing on.
  4. The pencil according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the shaping includes cutting and/or sharpening.
  5. The pencil according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the displacement device (20, 22) acts (exclusively) such as to push the lead (14) out of the cartridge (12).
  6. The pencil according to any of the preceding claims, characterised by a device (32) for limiting the displacement to a predetermined extent (M).
  7. The pencil according to Claim 6, characterised in that the limitation device (32) has a stop on the cartridge (12).
  8. The pencil according to Claim 6 or 7, characterised in that the extent (M) is 0.5 mm to 1.1 mm, preferably 0.6 mm to 1.0 mm, more preferably 0.7 mm to 0.9 mm.
  9. The pencil according to any of the preceding claims, characterised by
    a shaft (10) which holds the cartridge (12) so that the latter can be displaced axially, and
    a first one-way coupling (22) which couples the lead (14) to the shaft (10), and which allows the lead to be pushed out of the cartridge, but blocks it to prevent it from being pushed in.
  10. The pencil according to any of the preceding claims, characterised by a second one-way coupling (24) coupling the cartridge (12) to the lead (14) and which allows the lead to be pushed out of the cartridge, but blocks it to prevent it from being pushed in.
  11. The pencil according to Claim 9 or 10, characterised in that the first and/or the second one-way coupling (22, 24) has/have a pawl mechanism.
  12. The pencil according to any of Claims 9 to 11, characterised by a device (26) for pre-tensioning the cartridge (12) with respect to the shaft (10).
  13. The pencil according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the protective cap (16) has at least one blade (36) for shaping the lead (14) by cutting and/or sharpening.
  14. The pencil according to Claim 13, characterised in that the blade can deflect against an elastic return force (30) in the axial direction of the lead (14).
  15. The pencil according to Claim 13 or 14, characterised in that the blade (36) is pivotable and/or deformable against an elastic return force.
  16. The pencil according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in that the protective cap (16) has at least one template (34).
  17. The pencil according to Claim 16, characterised in that the template (34) can deflect against an elastic return force in the axial direction of the lead (14).
  18. The pencil according to any of the preceding claims, characterised by an axial stop (32) which the device (28) for shaping the lead (14) strikes in a rest position.
