COMBINED LEAD PENCIL HOLDER 0R PROTECTOR AND SHARPENER Filed Dec. 19, 1947 7%;, gm Mam Patented July 11, 1950 Q (STA QThe; present invention relates to ar combined lead pencil holder orprotector and sharpener of the typecomprising two tubular. members slidable on one another; of 'which members one is providedjwitha conical sharpener at oneend and; the otherl with az holding device for the. lead pencil, andthe object o f the invention is to provide a lead pencil holder being both. comfortable when the pencil is in use andadapted to be carried,;in the pocket, as well; as providing a proper a 7 guide during sharpening and automatic adjustthe said tubular members forming screw threads maybe so dimensioned relatively to each other that the saidmembers are disengaged, and consequently the feeding of the pencil discontinued, when the-required sharpening is completed.
In order to reduce the dimensions of the sharpening device proper it may conveniently be made in the form of a steel cone, the wall of which is provided with at least one helically extending slot havingone side edge turned radially inwardly and sharpened so as to form a knife edge of the sharpening device. Due to the fact that i the said knife edge is extending helically the sharpening action of the same is improved as compared with such known conical sharpeners having the usual straight knife edges. The device according to the present invention may, however, alternatively be provided with a sharpener having a straight knife edge which is turned inwardly in the manner stated, or again alternatively formed by a distinct steel knife secured as by screwing along the length of a slot in the cone, as conventional in known conical sharpeners.
According to another feature of the present invention the sharpener is detachably secured to the outer of the said two tubular members, being for instance provided with screw threads adapted to engage corresponding screw threads in the said member, the said co-operating screw threads being of an opposite pitch as compared with the screw threads interengaging the said two tubular members.

"g Claims. (01. 120-9'3 v Es PATsNrfoFncE According to a further feature of the present invention a tube or casing which is closed at one end may be detachably secured to the outer of the said two tubular members, the said tube or casing enclosing. thesharpener so as to give the holder an ideal smooth cylindrical form. ,The
'said tube or casing .alsoserves to receive chips formed during. sharpening and may be detached and emptied frorntime totimet l a T On theaccompanying drawing an embodiment of the deviceeccordingto the present invention is shown, the figure being an axial sectional view.
In the drawing-the cornbineddevice according to the invention is shown without any pencil received in the same, and. with the inner and "oute tubular members disengaged. from each other I being the inner tubular member and 4 the outer tubular member.
The'member l is; provided with a holding device for the lead pencil, which device in the embodiment shown is formed of tongues or hooks 2 which are struckgup from the wall of the member and are bent inwardly springlike so as to effect aholding action on a pencil received in themember, but obviously other suitable holding arrangements of any type may be employed when convenient. At the lower end of thetubular member I there are provided external'screw threads 3. The outer tubular member 4 is provided with internal screw threads 5 extending over an intermediate portion of its length and being engageable with the screw threads 3 on the inner member I when the said two tubular members are slid one into the other. The lower end of the tubular member l is provided with interior screw threads 6 which may be engaged by corresponding screw threads 6' on the sharpening device I, thereby securing the said device to the outer tubular member 4. The said screw threads 6 are made with an opposite pitch as compared with the screw threads 3 and 5. The tubular member 4 is also provided with exterio screw thread 8 adapted to be engaged by corresponding screw threads 8' on the casing or tube 9.
The conical wall of the sharpening device 1 v is provided with a helically extending slot I0,
The tubular members are then rotated relatively to each other and the pencil is then, due to the fact that it is kept in the member I by means of the devices 2, automatically advanced towards the sharpener in accordance with the pitch of the screw threads 3 and 5 and is thereby sharpened by the knife edge of the slot Ill, the pencil being thereby; positioned: by the guidingz-tactionv of the member I in themember: 4 The feeding:
movement is continued as long as the screw 10.
threads 3 and 5 are interengaged, but is aut-= matically discontinued when thescRWthreads: 3 have passed all through the screwst-lrirealdsz? When the lead pencil is to be used it is witlndrawn from the tubular members Fand 4 and reintroduced with the outer end; the: point" being: then turned outwardly, ready for 1158.1-
In order that the lead pencil holder maybe more comfortable to keep in the hand, itmayb'e provided with external grooves or the like, for
instance on the trun-conical end portion [1- of thetubular member I and ona portion" of' the casing or tube 9;
The'special manner of "securingthe sharpener proper to the outertubularmemberbymeansof' the interengaging screw threads G and 6""makes" it possibleto construct the sliarpener in two-sub stantially'similarhalves which-at their upper end are held together bybeingembraced -bythe"tubular memberand at-theirlower'endby means of aring'or nut; Such subdivisiomofthe-sharpener is of a special advantage' -in tlie production and by later sharpening of the cutting edge of the same.
What-I claim is:
. .1 1 q 1. A combined lead pencil holder, protector and sharpener comprising'two tubular members which are slidable one in-the-other; one of'the tubular members being provided 5 with a" holding device forthe lead pencil and"theothertubular" 13881369 member with a conical sharpeningdvice; the said-tubular members being provided with co'op-- erating screw'threads"-ofvery small pitch so as to feed the-lead pencil against the sharpening device by" relative rotation of th'esaid tubular members. i r i 2; A- combined lead pencil" holder; protector 'thav-thetscrew threads come out of engagement andlvtlietfeeding of the pencil is discontinued uponra certainaxial movement of the two tubular members relatively to one another.
' 3;;As combined. lead pencil holder, protector and' sharpener comprising two tubular members which areslidable one in the other, one of the tubular members being provided with a holding device foxthe lead pencil and the other tubular member-"with a conical sharpening device;- the said-'tubul'armembers being provided with coop erating ;'screw threads of very small pitch so as tofeed*the"lead pencil against thesl-iarpening device by relative rotation of thesaid two tubular members;, the conical sharpening device being securedtothe'end of the outer of the two'tubular members, being provided with external screw threads with which it is screwed into internal screw-threads-in the end of the said outer tubular member.
