Definitions

  • the invention relates to a method of manufacturing a short panel piece including profiled side edge portions for coupling at least two short panel pieces to each other, comprising the steps of supplying a large surface panel, cutting the large surface panel into at least two long panel pieces along a first cutting line, cutting at least one of the long panel pieces into at least two short panel pieces along a second cutting line extending transversely with respect to the first cutting line of the long panel piece, and machining a coupling profile to at least a side edge portion of at least one of the short panel pieces at the second cutting line thereof, wherein the coupling profile is suitable for attaching two short panel pieces to each other.
  • Such a method is known in the state of the art and is applied for manufacturing for example tile-shaped imitating elements out of a laminated large surface panel.
  • a laminated large surface panel includes a core of a wood-base material such as MDF or HDF and a decoration layer laminated at an upper side of the core and a balancing layer laminated at a lower side of the core.
  • the decoration layer has a print of tiles, for example, whereas the short panel pieces manufactured according to the known method each have a size of such a tile. In general the short panel pieces have smaller dimensions than, for example, traditional floor panels imitating wood planks.
  • the large surface panel is cut into she long panel pieces and subsequently coupling profiles are applied to the longitudinal sides of the long panel pieces, at least at the first cutting line thereof.
  • the long panel piece is transported and guided along milling tools located next to the longitudinal side of the long panel piece.
  • the long panel piece may be transported and guided along the milling tools by clamping a region of the long panel piece extending between the longitudinal sides thereof between two conveyor belts, a chain and belt, or the like. Because of the relatively large length of the long panel piece the coupling profile can be manufactured accurately.
  • a guiding means for guiding the short panel piece transversely with respect to the first cutting line is provided to the short panel piece before machining a coupling profile to a side edge portion of the short panel piece at the second cutting line thereof. Due to this feature the short panel piece can be passed along a device for providing a coupling profile, for example a milling machine, more accurately. The accuracy of the position of the coupling profile on the short panel piece is no longer dependent on the locations of the projections of the conveyor belt.
  • the short panel piece may be transported along the milling tools by clamping it between two conveyor belts for example, similar to that in the manufacturing step of the long panel piece as described hereinbefore. However, the short panel piece is now guided by means of the guiding means.
  • An additional advantage of the method according to the invention is that the method improves the flexibility and manufacturing capacity of the manufacturing process. Since the projections of the conveyor belt can be eliminated short panel pieces of different lengths can be manufactured without the necessity of adjusting the mutual distance between adjacent projections as seen in the transport direction. It is noted that the shorter the short panel pieces are, the less accurate the coupling profile can be made in the traditional method since the projections abutting one short panel piece are located at a relatively short distance with respect to each other, leading to a coupling profile which is not exactly aligned with a longitudinal axis of the short panel piece. Since in the method according to the invention the short panel piece itself is provided with guiding means the accuracy of profiling has improved.
  • the guiding means is provided to the long panel piece before or synchronously with the process of cutting the long panel piece into short panel pieces, because it is efficient to apply the guiding means as long as the long panel piece is still one piece. If the guiding means is manufactured synchronously with the process of cutting the long panel piece into short panel pieces, the manufacturing speed as well as the accuracy of the parallelism of the guiding means and a side edge at the second cutting line can be improved. It is noted that in this case the guiding means is also provided to the short panel piece, but at a time at which the short panel pieces are still joint in the long panel piece.
  • the guiding means may comprise a guiding groove which is made transversely with respect to the first cutting line such that each of the short panel pieces obtains at least one guiding grove.
  • the guiding groove may fit on a guiding bar so as to be able to displace the short panel piece along the guiding bar transversely with respect to the first cutting line. This is a simple configuration of a guiding means in order to accurately manufacture a coupling profile to a side edge portion of the short panel piece.
  • the guiding groove may be fitted on a guiding bar and the short panel piece may be guided along the guiding bar upon machining a coupling profile to the side edge portion of the short panel piece.
  • the guiding groove can be manufactured by a milling process, but alternative methods are conceivable.
  • the method as described above can be started directly by supplying a long panel piece, without first supplying a large surface panel and cutting the large surface panel into long panel pieces. Therefore the invention is also related to a method of manufacturing a short panel piece including profiled side edge portions for coupling at least two short panel pieces to each other, comprising the steps of: supplying a long panel piece, cutting the long panel piece into at least two short panel pieces along a cutting line extending transversely with respect to a side edge of the long panel piece, machining a coupling profile to at least a side edge portion of at least one of the short panel pieces at the cutting line thereof, the coupling profile being suitable for attaching two short panel pieces to each other, wherein a guiding means for guiding the short panel piece substantially parallel to the cutting line is provided to the short panel piece before machining a coupling profile to the side edge portion.
  • the long panel piece may be pressed as a single laminated panel piece without being cut out of a larger panel.
  • the invention is also related to an apparatus for manufacturing a short panel piece including profiled side edge portions for coupling at least two short panel pieces to each other, as defined in claim 6.
  • the apparatus comprises another cutting member for cutting the long panel piece out of a large surface panel, which other cutting member is located upstream of the cutting member.
  • the other cutting member may comprise a plurality of parallel saws which may cut long panel pieces out of a large surface panel along parallel cutting lines, possibly synchronously.
  • the method of manufacturing according to the invention is illustrated by means of Figs. 1a-1g , showing successive steps.
  • relatively small panel pieces such as floor tiles including coupling means for coupling them to each other is manufactured.
  • alternative applications such as wall panels, ceiling panels and the like can be manufactured according to this method, as well.
  • the panels may be laminated panels comprising a core of wood-based material and a decoration layer comprising a tile pattern, for example.
  • the core may be made of MDF, HDF, or the like.
  • Fig. 1a shows a top view of a large surface panel 1.
  • the large surface panel 1 has a longitudinal direction X and a transverse direction Y which extends transversely with respect to the longitudinal direction X.
  • the large surface panel 1 has a rectangular shape and its length in longitudinal direction X is larger than its length in transverse direction Y. It is, however, also possible that its length in longitudinal direction X is smaller than its length in transverse direction Y.
  • the first cutting line 2 extends in transverse direction Y of the large surface panel 1. In this embodiment there are seven first cutting lines 2 extending parallel to each other. As a result, the large surface panel 1 is cut into eight long panel pieces 3.
  • one of the resulting long panel pieces 3 is passed through a machining device 4 for machining coupling profiles to two opposite side edge portions 5.
  • the opposite side edge portions 5 extend parallel to the first cutting lines 2.
  • At least one of the side edge portions 5 extends at a first cutting line 2; the opposite side edge portion may originate from a side edge portion of the large surface panel 1, see Fig. 1a .
  • the profile that is machined is intended to be a coupling means for coupling panel parts to each other after finishing the method of manufacturing according to the invention.
  • the profile may comprise a groove and tongue, for example, of which several shapes are known in the art of laminated (floor) panels.
  • the tongue and groove may be simple such that an adhesive is used upon installing the panels.
  • Fig 1c shows the resulting long panel piece 3 comprising two opposite profiled edge portions 5 along its longest sides.
  • the long panel piece 3 is transported and guided along the machining device 4 by clamping the long panel piece 3 between two conveyor belts. Since the long panel piece 3 is relatively long this appears to be sufficient for accurately guiding the long panel piece 3 along the machining device.
  • the conveyor belts may clamp regions of the long panel piece 3 extending between the longitudinal sides thereof.
  • the long panel piece 3 of the embodiment as shown in Fig. 1d is cut into four short panel pieces 6. This is achieved by cutting the long panel piece 3 along three second cutting lines 7 in transverse direction with respect to the first cutting line 2. It is noted that in this embodiment the first cutting lines 2 and the second cutting lines 7 extend perpendicularly with respect to each other when projected on the large surface panel 1.
  • Fig. 1d illustrates three saws 8 for sawing the long panel piece 3 along the second cutting lines 7. Furthermore, it shows four milling cutters 9 for milling a guiding groove 10, see Fig. 1e .
  • the guiding groove 10 is provided in the lower side of the long panel piece 3 and extends parallel to the second cutting line 7. Alternative devices for making a guiding groove 10 are conceivable.
  • each of the short panel pieces 6 includes already two opposite profiled edge portions 5 which function as coupling means.
  • the resulting short panel piece 6 as an intermediate product is shown as a perspective view in Fig. 2 .
  • the short panel piece 6 representing a laminated panel piece has an upper side 12 which is called the decoration side and a lower side 13, which comprise a balancing layer in case of laminated panels.
  • the guiding groove 10 is provided at the lower side 13.
  • the profiled edge portions 5 comprise a tongue 5a and a groove 5b which are shaped and dimensioned such that they fit into each other.
  • the short panel piece 6 may have a rectangular or square shape. It is possible that in case of a rectangular short panel piece 6 its length along the first cutting line 2 is shorter or longer than its width along the second cutting line 7.
  • Fig. 1f illustrates a next step in which two remaining edge portions of the short panel piece 6 are profiled as well. Both remaining opposite edge portions to be profiled extend parallel to the second cutting lines 7 when projected on the long panel piece 3, whereas at least one of these edge portions is disposed at the second cutting line 7.
  • Fig. 1f shows the step of machining the coupling profiles and
  • Fig. 1g shows the resulting short panel piece 6 including profiled side edge portions 5 surrounding the short panel piece 6.
  • the coupling profiles of the side edge portions 5 are such that the short panel pieces 6 can be coupled to each other.
  • Fig. 3 illustrates the step of profiling the short panel piece 6 in a perspective view.
  • the short panel piece 6 can be transported by conveyor belts (not shown) which are driven in parallel to each other and between which the short panel piece 6 is clamped. Due to the manner of guiding the relatively small short panel piece 6 along a machining device the profile can be manufactured accurately at the desired position of the short panel piece 6. It can be seen in Fig. 3 that the edge portions 5 are machined such that the guiding groove 10 becomes part of the profile.
  • the short panel piece 6 as manufactured according to the method as described hereinbefore is shown in fig. 4 . It is, however, also possible that the guiding groove 10 is provided on another location such that it keeps its dimensions in the final state of the short panel piece 6.
  • the short panel piece 6 has a rectangular shape, two tongues 5a and two grooves 5b at the edge portions 5.
  • the method provides the opportunity to manufacture shore panel pieces 6 of different lengths without re-adjusting a manufacturing device for transporting and guiding pieces of different lengths. If small short panel pieces are manufactured the manufacturing capacity can still be high, because due to the presence of the guiding groove it is not necessary to have separate clamping means for clamping and guiding each of the short panel pieces 6.
  • each panel is transported by means of a chain or belt including projections such that in case of a fixed distance of adjacent projections as seen in the transport direction the number of relatively small short panel pieces 6 transported along the millers 15 will be the same as relatively large short panel pieces 6.
  • the millers 15 will be out of work for a longer time period between two successively passing short panel pieces 6.
  • the short panel pieces 6 can be transported close behind each other.
  • a higher number of relatively small short panel pieces 6 can be manufactured.
  • the advantage of the method according to the invention is that handling time for adjusting the positions is saved.
  • Transporting of the panels can be performed by conveying means which may clamp a plurality of small panel pieces 6 at the same time such as described hereinbefore in case of two parallel conveyor belts. This allows to minimize the mutual distance between two small panel pieces 6, hence maximizing the manufacturing capacity.
