Description
- The present invention relates to a collapsible container which is a collapsible vase.
-
WO 2004/000528 discloses a plastic vase having a collapsible moulded container, a moulded rim, and a moulded base. The container has four walls with a membrane hinge running between adjacent walls. A pair of opposing walls of the container also has a membrane hinge running along the length of each wall dividing it into two halves. Each wall of the container also has a hinged flap at its base which folds inwards to form the base of the container. The moulded vase base has a raised rim inside of which the container is clipped. The moulded vase rim is clipped to the top of the container to hold it open. - A problem with this plastic vase is that when the vase has been erected by having the container has been clipped into its base and the rim clipped to the top of the container, the erected vase is not that stable as it can be easily knocked over. The vase is complex and not that cheap to make and it also has the problem of not being easily disposable.
-
JP 2006 326280 claim 1 is based, discloses a collapsible vase comprising a flower insertion part having an open state in which flowers can be placed in the insertion part and a flattened state for storage during non-use of the vase. The flower insertion part has four sides and a joint between each side enabling the flower insertion part to be collapsed to the flattened state. The flower insertion part has a pair of elongated outwardly extending parts with each part extending from one end of an alternate side of the flower insertion part. The vase has a base with a pair of slots for receiving the elongate outwardly extending parts when the flower insertion part is in its open state. Each outwardly extending part is inserted through a respective said slot and folded underneath the base. It is then folded upwards at the edge of the base and back towards the flower insertion part so that the distal end of the outwardly extending part can be held by a curved slot near the top of a side of the flower insertion part. -
FR 2413273 - It is an object of the present invention to provide a collapsible container to alleviate the above-mentioned problems.
- According to the present invention there is provided a collapsible vase, comprising: a sleeve having a plurality of flaps extending from one end of the sleeve, the sleeve having an open state in which at least one item can be placed in the sleeve and a flattened state for storage during non-use of the vase; and a base having a plurality of slots for securely receiving said flaps when the sleeve is in its open state, there being the same number of slots as flaps with each flap being arranged to be inserted through a respective one of said slots and folded outwardly away from the sleeve, whereby the sleeve is retained by said base in its open state in a substantially upright position, characterized in that the underside of the base is formed with a respective recess aligned with each of said slots, each said recess being sized to receive the outwardly folded flap inserted through said slot.
- A sleeve stabilising insert may be provided for insertion into the sleeve when the sleeve is in its open state.
- The collapsible container may include a waterproof liner for the sleeve.
- An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings, in which:
-
Figure 1 is an exploded view of a collapsible container in an open state according to an example which is outside the scope of the claimed invention; -
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the collapsible container ofFigure 1 in an open state; -
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a waterproof liner for the container ofFigure 1 ; -
Figure 4 is a view of the bottom of the waterproof liner ofFigure 3 ; -
Figures 5 and 6 are views of the sleeve and sleeve holder, respectively, in a flattened state; -
Figure 7 is an exploded perspective view of a collapsible container in an open state according to another embodiment of the invention; and -
Figure 8 is an underside view of a base of the collapsible container ofFigure 7 . - Referring to
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings, a container in the form of acollapsible vase 1 is shown in its open state. Thevase 1 has asleeve 2 in which at least one item can be placed, asleeve holder 3 or skirt, and asquare base 4. - The
sleeve 2 is a tube formed of fouridentical sides 5 with ajoint 6 between eachside 5 and the tube has a square cross-sectional area. - The
sleeve holder 3 also has fouridentical sides 8 with ajoint 9 between eachside 8. Eachside 8 has the configuration of a trapezium with thelower edges 10 of thetrapeziums 8 bounding a square cross-sectional area at a base end 11 (seeFig. 2 ) of thesleeve holder 3 and theupper edges 12 of thetrapeziums 8, which are shorter than thelower edges 10, bounding a square cross-sectional area forming anupper opening 13. Thus, the cross-sectional area of thesleeve holder 3 tapers between thebase end 11 and theupper opening 13. Theupper opening 13 is dimensioned to receive thesleeve 2 and thesleeve 2 is fitted within thesleeve holder 3 so that thesleeve 2 is held in an upright position and thesleeve 2 andsleeve holder 3 are coaxial about acentral axis 14. - A
trapezoidal flap 15 extends from eachupper edge 12 and anothertrapezoidal flap 16 extends from eachlower edge 10. The upper edgetrapezoidal flaps 15 are all identical and the lower edgetrapezoidal flaps 16 are also all identical. The upper edgetrapezoidal flaps 15 are arranged to be against thesides 5 of thesleeve 2 and lower edgetrapezoidal flaps 16 are arranged to be against anupper surface 17 of thebase 4 with thedistal edges 18 of the lower edgetrapezoidal flaps 16 being coincident with theperimeter 19 of thebase 4. - The upper edge
trapezoidal flaps 15 is releasably fastened to thesleeve sides 5 by finger-lift adhesive 20 placed on portions of thesleeve sides 5 and splitpin paper fasteners 21 are used to releasably fasten the lower edgetrapezoidal flaps 16 to thebase 4.Holes 22 are provided in the lower edgetrapezoidal flaps 16 and thebase 4 for the splitpin paper fasteners 21. Splitpin paper fasteners 21 may be used instead of theadhesive 20 to releasably fasten the upper edgetrapezoidal flaps 15 to thesleeve sides 5. Any suitable arrangement of releasable fasteners may be used to fasten the upper edgetrapezoidal flaps 15 to thesleeve sides 5 and the lower edgetrapezoidal flaps 16 to thebase 4 and these may include magnets, poppers or VelcroRTM. - Referring to
Figure 2 , thevase 1 in its open state has thesleeve 2 inserted into thesleeve holder 3 so that thesleeve 2 rests on thebase 4 and thesleeve 2 is held in an upright position by thesleeve holder 3. Thesleeve holder 3 is fastened to thesleeve 2 by the finger-lift adhesive 20 and thesleeve holder 3 is fastened to thebase 4 by the splitpin paper fasteners 21 being passed through theholes 22 in the lower edgetrapezoidal flaps 16 and thebase 4. Theend portions 23 of thefasteners 21 are then bent through 90 degrees to hold theflaps 16 andbase 4 together. - Referring to
Figure 3 , awaterproof liner 24 for thevase 1 has abag 25 and a supportingtube 26. Thetube 26 is formed of fouridentical sides 27 with ajoint 28 between eachside 27 and thetube 26 has a square cross-sectional area which is slightly less than the square cross-sectional area bounded by theupper edges 12 of thetrapeziums 8 of thesleeve holder 3. The bottom of eachside 27 has a rectangular flap 29 (seeFigure 4 ). Thebag 25 is made from, say, a plastic, such as polythene, and theportion 30 of the bag around its entrance is folded over thetop portion 31 of thetube 26 and is fixed to it by, say, staples 32. The remainder of thebag 25 hangs down inside thetube 26. Thetube 26 can be in placed in a flattened state by having eachtube side 27 pushed towards anadjacent tube side 27 so that they are coincident. - When the
vase 1 is in its open state, thewaterproof liner 24 is placed in an open state and one pair offlaps 29 of thetube 26 are folded towards each other and the other pair of flaps 29' are folded towards each other and overlap theflaps 29 in their corner regions. The flaps 29' are then held to thetube 26 by adhesive tape. Theliner 24 is then placed into thesleeve 2. - When the
vase 1 is not in use, both thesleeve 2 and thesleeve holder 3 can be collapsed to a flattened state for storage by means of theirjoints sleeve 2 is in its flattened state (seeFigure 5 ), eachsleeve side 5 is pushed towards an adjacent sleeve side so that they are coincident. When thesleeve holder 3 is in its flattened state (seeFigure 6 ), eachsleeve holder side 8 and its upper and lowertrapezoidal edge flaps - In a specific example of the example and modifications described above, the
sleeve 2,sleeve holder 3 andbase 4 comprise cardboard. -
Figures 7 and 8 illustrate an embodiment of acollapsible vase 40 according to the invention. Aflap 41 extends from the middle of the lower end of eachside 42 of thesleeve 43. Thebase 44 has an uppersquare portion 45 placed centrally on a lowersquare portion 46 which extends beyond the uppersquare portion 45. The uppersquare portion 45 of thebase 44 hasslots 47 arranged to receiverespective flaps 41 of thesleeve 43 when thesleeve 43 is in its opened state. The lowersquare portion 46 has arectangular opening 48 corresponding to eachslot 47 wherein eachslot 47 is aligned with one side of theopening 48 and theopening 48 extends away from the slot towards the edge of the lowersquare portion 46. Eachopening 48 is sized to receive arespective flap 41. - When the
sleeve 43 is in its open state itsflaps 41 are inserted into theslots 47 in thebase 44. Eachflap 41 is then folded underneath the uppersquare portion 45 of thebase 44 and theflaps 41 fit within theirrespective openings 48 in the lowersquare portion 46 of thebase 44. - A
sleeve insert 49 is placed at the bottom of thesleeve 43 and is shaped so that it fits snugly within thesleeve 43. - A waterproof liner may then be inserted into the
sleeve 43. - The
sleeve 43,base 44 andsleeve insert 49 may comprise cardboard. Thevase 40 described in the embodiment does not have a taperedsleeve holder 3 although such a sleeve holder could be included and the sleeve holder may provide aesthetic appeal. Thebase 44 extends sufficiently beyond thesleeve 43 when it is attached to the base to prevent thevase 40 being readily knocked over. - Whilst a particular embodiment has been described, it will be understood that various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the claimed invention.
