Description

  • The present invention relates to a device for packaging and applying a product according to the preamble of claim 1.
  • Packaging device means any packaging that allows the sale, transport, protection and storage of the product it contains.
  • "Application device" means any device comprising means for applying and spreading a composition, in particular a cosmetic composition, on keratin materials, such as the skin or keratinous fibers (eyelashes, hair, etc.).
  • It is known, particularly from the document FR 2,884,500 , to provide a piston sliding in the tubular body of a container for receiving an applicator having an applicator element disposed at the end of a rod, so that during the introduction of the applicator, the tubular piston is moved along the body so as to compress the product stored in the container. The product is thus confined to the bottom of the tubular body and is kept in contact with the application element, while being separated from the ambient air, which promotes its preservation.
  • The use of such a piston is effective with respect to the removal of the product by the applicator and the preservation of the product. However, the movement of the rod of the applicator through the piston and the displacement of this piston cause the creation of an overpressure or a depression inside the container, which lead to efforts of introduction or extraction of the applicator relative to the container which differ according to the position of the applicator along its introduction or extraction stroke. This phenomenon, known as "swabbing", is unpleasant for the user and can cause annoying noises. In addition, the mechanical resistance opposing the displacement of the applicator relative to the container is felt as an inconvenience by the user.
  • EP-A1-1714578 describes a device according to the preamble of claim 1.
  • The object of the invention is to propose a solution to this non-homogeneity of the retaining forces applied to the applicator during its travel stroke.
  • For this purpose, the subject of the invention is a packaging and application device according to claim 1.
  • According to particular embodiments, the packaging and application device comprises one or more of the features of claims 2 to 10.
  • The invention will be better understood on reading the description which follows, given solely by way of example and with reference to the drawings in which:
    • the figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a packaging device according to the invention; and
    • the figure 2 is a perspective view on a larger scale of the abutment of the applicator resting on the sliding piston; and
    • the figure 3 is a sectional view of an enlargement of the stop,
    • the Figures 4 and 5 are views identical to that of the figure 2 the abutment of the applicator during the crossing of the piston and at the end of this crossing respectively;
    • the figure 6 is a perspective view of the stop of a variant of the packaging device according to the invention.
  • The application and conditioning device 10 illustrated on the figure 1 is, for example, intended to contain and allow the application of mascara or other viscous cosmetic product. It comprises a container 12 and an applicator 14 which, at rest, is kept screwed on the container 12.
  • The applicator 14 comprises a plug 16 forming a gripping member, extended by a rod 18 carrying at one end an applicator element 20. The rod 18 and the applicator element 20 are adapted to be engaged in the container 12, particular in the position of the figure 1 .
  • In the example under consideration, the application element 20 comprises a mascara brush comprising a twisted metal core and retained bristles. transversely between the turns of the soul. Alternatively, the applicator element is a tip, flocked or not, elastically deformable or not, or a foam, or a felt, or a brush or brush without a metal core, for example a brush or a comb made by injection of plastic material.
  • The container 12 comprises a tubular body 22 of circular cross section, having a main section 24 open at an inlet end. In the vicinity of this inlet, it has externally a thread 26 adapted to cooperate with a corresponding tapping 28 formed in the plug 16 to allow sealing of the container by screwing the plug 16 on the container 12.
  • At its other end, the main section 24 is extended by a well 30 consisting of a blind cylindrical section of lower section than that of the main section 24. The well 30 is closed at one end and is connected at its other end to the main section. 24 by a convergent section 32. The well 30 has an inner section substantially equal to or only slightly greater than that of the application element 20.
  • The container further comprises an axially sliding piston 40 disposed inside the main section 24 and axially guided by the latter. The product to be applied is confined in the tubular body 24 between the piston 40 and the bottom of the well 30.
  • The piston 40 has an axial opening 42 through which the applicator element 20 and the stem 18 pass. The section of the opening 42 is substantially equal to the section of the rod 18 in its running part.
  • The piston 40 has an outer shell 44 extended at each end by two diverging lips 46, 48 resiliently applied to the inner surface of the main section 24, thereby sealing the piston 40 and the main section 24. ferrule 44 is thus slightly spaced from the main section 24 in the middle part of the piston.
  • The opening 42 is formed at the narrowed end of a generally frustoconical guide section 50 of the piston which is connected to the shell 44 by its widened end turned towards the inlet of the container. Thus, the guide portion 50 extends in the bulk of the shell 44 substantially over the entire length thereof. It has a generally decreasing circular section of its maximum diameter inlet facing the inlet of the container to the opening 42.
  • As illustrated on the figure 3 , the guide section has two successive sections with different opening angles. Thus, the inlet section opposite the opening 42 has an angle α of inclination with respect to the longitudinal axis of the order of 45 °, while the outlet section opening through the opening 42 has an angle d lower inclination β between 20 ° and 40 °.
  • The opening 42 has, along its periphery, a set of regularly distributed grooves which are suitable for wiping the surface of the rod 18 thanks to the upper surfaces of the grooves and to wring the applicator element 20.
  • The flutes 52 are adapted to ensure otherwise a flow of air between the rod and the piston.
  • As illustrated on the figure 3 the inner surface around the opening 42 forms an inner shoulder 54 extending inwardly. The grooves 52 are defined by this shoulder 54, so as to extend radially towards the opening 42.
  • The top of the flutes 52 and the top of this shoulder 54 form a frustoconical bearing zone 56 for an axial abutment of the applicator element.
  • This bearing zone 56 forms an angle γ, between 20 ° and 60 ° with the longitudinal axis of the container.
  • At its end carrying the applicator element 20, the rod 18 has an axial stop 70 projecting radially from the running part denoted 71 of the rod 18, according to which the section of the rod 18 is constant. This axial abutment is adapted to bear on the piston 40 following the periphery of the opening 42 on the bearing zone 56 and more generally on the inner surface of the guide section 50.
  • The stop is formed of a radial expansion 70 which is retractable radially by radial elastic deformation to allow the passage of the rod through the piston.
  • More specifically, in the embodiment illustrated in the figures, the axial stop is formed of a set of tabs 72 extending the rod 18 and separated by orifices 76 of air passage when the stop bears on the area of support 56. The legs flare from the stem 18 to their free ends 78 forming radially apexes. At their free ends, the tabs have a shoulder oriented towards the application element 20 able to bear on the bearing zone 56.
  • The tabs delimit externally a divergent surface radially from the rod 18 to the free ends 78. To soften, the surface of the free ends 78 is chamfered or rounded.
  • The inclined surfaces form clean surfaces to cooperate with the periphery of the opening 42 on the bearing zone 56.
  • The tabs 72 are each deformable radially and are separated by notches 82 forming the air passages 76. The tabs 72 deform inwardly in contact with the opening 42. These notches 82 extend at least partially following the length of the rod and open between the ends 78 of the tabs.
  • The rod has in its running part a tubular envelope with which the tabs 72 are molded and are extensions of it.
  • The tabs 72 have an inclination relative to the axis of the rod of between 1 and 10 degrees, this inclination being less than the inclination of the convergent section 50 which forms a cam surface capable of deforming the tabs 72 by cooperating with the free end 78 of the tabs during the insertion of the applicator into the container.
  • The tabs 72 have a length measured along the axis of the rod of between 1 and 5 mm. Their width is substantially equal to the width of the notches 82.
  • The notches have a length, measured along the axis of the rod, equal to that of the legs and their width is between 1 and 3 mm at their open end.
  • The elasticity of the tabs 72 and the inclination of these tabs as well as that of the frustoconical surface 50 are such that when the application element 20 is introduced into the container 12, the force required for the passage of the retractable stop 70 through the opening 42 is greater during the introduction of the applicator to that necessary for the same passage during the extraction of the applicator.
  • It will be appreciated that initially the applicator element 20 is received in the well 30 of the container.
  • When the container is full, the piston is close to the inlet in the position shown in phantom on the figure 1 . When it is almost empty, the piston is pushed into the main section 24 in the vicinity of the well 30 as illustrated in continuous lines on the figure 1 .
  • For the use of the applicator 14, it is extracted from the container. Pulling on the rod 18 from the gripping member 16 causes the rod 18 to flow through the opening 42. During this circulation, the rod is wiped by the grooves formed around the periphery of the opening 42. The presence of the grooves allows air circulation avoiding any effect of swabbing. The splines are then cleaned during the passage of the brush.
  • The passage of the tabs 72 through the opening 42 takes place after that of the rod. Because of their inclined outer surfaces, the tabs deform radially so that their ends 78 are close to the axis of the rod 18 allowing the passage of the opening 42. The bristles or other organs of the application element also deform elastically to pass through the opening 42. During this passage, they undergo, due to the deformation, a spin limiting the amount of product taken by the application element.
  • When the applicator 14 after use is reintroduced into the container 12, the applicator element passes through the opening 42 by deforming and then the ends 78 of the tabs bear against the convergent surface 50 as shown in FIG. figure 2 . Depending on the elasticity of the tabs 72, the tabs deform and descend until they abut against the bearing zone 56. They then cause the piston 40 to move under the action of the thrust of the rod thus causing compressing the product contained in the container downstream of the piston.
  • When the force applied on the rod 18 is greater than the reaction force applied by the product on the piston and the friction forces of the piston on the body, the tabs 72 compress radially, their ends 78 being guided by the zone bearing 56 of the convergent surface 50 constituting a cam surface. This deformation authorizes the crossing of the opening 42 by the stop 70 thus retracted as illustrated on the figure 4 . The displacement of the applicator then extends after return to the shape of the tabs 72, as shown in FIG. figure 5 by sliding the rod 18 through the opening 42 without further displacement of the piston, until the application member 20 is housed in the well 30 and the cap is screwed to the open end of the container.
  • It is conceivable that during the displacement of the piston, and during the crossing of the piston by the retractable stop 70, the pressures on either side of the piston 40 are balanced due to the circulation of air through the wide notches 82 .
  • Any pressure differences that may lead to unpleasant sensations are thus avoided.
  • An alternative device for application and packaging 10 is illustrated by the figure 6 .
  • Unlike the device shown on the Figures 1 to 5 , the tabs 72 of the axial abutment 70 have an outwardly convexity curved shape directed away from the axis of the rod 18.
  • Each tab 77 converges radially toward the axis of the rod 18 at its free end 78.
  • Thus, the outer surface of each tab 72 comprises a first region 100 connected to the running portion 71 of the rod 18, which diverges radially from the running portion 71 of the rod 18 and a second region 102 of contact with the piston 40 which converges towards the axis of the stem 18.
  • The length of the second convergent region 102, taken along the axis of the rod 18, is greater than at least 10% of the length of the first diverging region 100.
  • Upon insertion of the applicator 14 into the container 12, the converging region 102 of the tabs 72 first lands on the bearing area of the converging surface 50, which produces a smoother contact with the piston 40.
  • Thus, the risk of damaging the piston 40 during reinsertion of the applicator 14 is decreased.

Claims (10)

  1. Device (10) for packaging and applying a product, comprising:
    - a receptacle (12) for containing the product to be applied;
    - an applicator (14) comprising a rod (18) which is provided at one end with an application element (20) which can be introduced into the receptacle (12) in order to remove the product,
    the receptacle comprising:
    - a tubular body (22);
    - a movable piston (40) which is guided axially in the tubular body (22), which piston (40) comprises a passage opening (42) for the application element (20) and the rod (18),
    the applicator comprising, along the length of the rod (18), at least one axial stop (70) which protrudes radially relative to the rod (18) and which is capable of being in abutment against the piston (40) along the periphery of the passage opening (42),
    the stop (70) being able to be retracted radially in order to allow it to pass through the passage opening (42) of the piston (40), the retractable stop (70) having a resistance to passage through the opening (42) of the piston (40) which is greater when the applicator (14) is introduced into the receptacle than the passage resistance of the retractable stop (70) though the opening (42) of the piston, when the applicator (14) is removed from the receptacle (12), the device being characterized in that the stop comprises at least one orifice (76) for the passage of air when the stop (70) is in abutment against the piston (40),
    and in that the air passage orifice (76) is able to allow the circulation of air to balance the pressures at one side and the other of piston (40) when the retractable stop (70) passes the piston (40).
  2. Packaging and application device according to claim 1, characterised in that the stop comprises, along the length of the rod (18), a radial widening (70) which locally increases the cross-section of the rod (18), and in that the air circulation orifice (76) comprises at least one recess (82) which is provided in the radial widening (70).
  3. Packaging and application device according to claim 2, characterised in that the radial widening (70) has a plurality of separate lugs (72) which are distributed at the periphery of the rod (18) and which extend away from the shaft of the rod (18) as far as radial tips (78) in the direction of the application element (20), the lugs (72) being separated by recesses (82) which extend partially along the length of the rod (18).
  4. Packaging and application device according to claim 3, characterised in that the lugs (72) have at the outer side a surface which diverges radially relative to the shaft of the rod (18) in the direction of the application element (20).
  5. Packaging and application device according to claim 3 or claim 4, characterised in that the inclination of the lugs (72) relative to the shaft of the rod (18) is between 1 and 10 degrees.
  6. Packaging and application device according to any one of claims 3 to 5, characterised in that the rod (18) comprises a tubular casing and the lugs (72) are integral with the tubular casing in the continuation thereof.
  7. Packaging and application device according to any one of claims 3 to 6, characterised in that the radial tips (78) constitute the free ends of the lugs (72).
  8. Packaging and application device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the stop (70) is radially resiliently deformable.
  9. Packaging and application device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the piston (40) comprises, upstream of the passage opening (42), when viewed in the direction in which the applicator (14) is introduced into the receptacle (12), a guiding portion (50) having a cross-section which decreases progressively as far as the passage opening (42), which portion (50) forms a cam surface which is capable of providing radial retraction of the axial stop (70) by means of co-operation with the stop (70) when the applicator (14) is introduced into the receptacle (12).
  10. Packaging and application device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the passage opening (42) comprises, along the periphery thereof, corrugations (52) which are capable of pressing on the rod (18).
