Abstract

Flexible arm (6) for an awning formed of two hinge-mounted parts (7-8) which are connected to one another by means of a hinge (9), characterised in that the flexible arm (6) is provided with a light which is integrated in the flexible arm (6).

Description

  • The present invention concerns a flexible arm and a hinge applied therein.
  • In particular, the invention concerns a flexible arm of the type that is used in awnings, sun blinds or the like, and which mainly consists of two hinge-mounted parts which are connected to one another by means of a hinge.
  • Such flexible arms which are provided with a light are already known, but they are disadvantageous in that said light is externally applied and, consequently, occupies some space when the flexible arm is folded up. This may be disadvantageous, for example, when such a flexible arm is applied in an awning with a casing in which the arms are folded up when winding up the awning, since the casing must in that case offer sufficient space to the light. A flexible arm according to the preamble of claim 1 is known from DE 298 18 928 U .
  • Another disadvantage of such flexible arms with a light is that the suspension of said light is relatively complex and consequently expensive.
  • Also, the invention aims to remedy one or several of the above-mentioned disadvantages.
  • To this end, the invention concerns a flexible arm of the aforesaid type which is provided with a light which is integrated in the hinge of the flexible arm.
  • This is advantageous in that the light is neatly integrated in the hinge and, consequently, occupies no or practically no additional space.
  • Another advantage is that the light is additionally protected against any possible external damage thanks to said integration.
  • The light is preferably situated in or near the centre of the clearance length of the awning. As a result of said integration in the hinge an attractive light is obtained and, in the case of an awning, the light will be situated centrally in relation to the stretched cloth of the awning, in other words, ideally placed to evenly light the space under the cloth of the awning.
  • An additional advantage is that the hinge, which is usually made of aluminium, may serve as a cooling mass to discharge the heat which is dissipated by the light, such that the flexible arm cannot heat up too much there where the light is situated, such that burns and damage to the cloth due to overheating can be avoided.
  • According to a preferred embodiment, the light is integrated under a little cap with an opening or a window opposite the lamp, which cap can be conveniently made as a clip-on cap.
  • In order to connect the light, use is made of an electric cable which can be concealed in the hollow sections out of which the hinge-mounted parts of the flexible arm are made or by means of a cable duct provided on or in said sections.
  • In order to better explain the characteristics of the invention, the following preferred embodiment of a flexible arm according to the invention and a hinge applied thereby is described by way of example only and without being limitative in any way, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
    • figure 1 schematically represents an awning with two flexible arms according to the invention, seen in perspective;
    • figure 2 shows a detail of the part indicated by F2 in figure 1 to a larger scale, seen from another angle, indicated by arrow F3;
    • figure 3 shows the part represented in figure 2, but as disassembled;
    • figure 4 shows a section according to line IV - IV in figure 2.
  • The awning 1 of figure 1 is formed of a casing 2 containing a roller 3 on which a cloth 4 can be rolled up and unrolled, which cloth is kept strained by means of what is called a front lath 5 onto which the cloth 4 is fixed and which is kept at a distance from the casing 2 by means of flexible arms 6 whereby, as is known, springs have been built-in which tend to stretch open the flexible arms 6.
  • As usual, the flexible arm 6 is formed of two hinge-mounted parts, 7 and 8 respectively, which are connected to one another by means of a hinge 9, as shown in figures 2 and 3.
  • The hinge-mounted parts are usually made as hollow sections and they are connected to one another by the hinge 9 which is provided with coupling elements 10 and 11 to that end to connect the aforesaid sections and which, in the example of figure 3, are formed of wings which are inserted in the hollow sections and are fixed there in appropriate manner.
  • According to the invention, the arms 6 are provided with a light which is integrated in the hinge 9 of the arm 6.
  • In the case of the given example, the light is integrated in a recess 12 in one of the hinge parts, whereby a lamp 13, preferably a LED lamp, can be provided in the recess 12, for example under a cap 14 which is provided with an opening or window 15 opposite the lamp 13, whereby the opening 15 can form a seating for the lamp 13, for example.
  • As shown in the section of figure 4, the lamp 13 is situated in the extension of the axis 16 of the hinge 9, and the cap 14 is made as a clip-on element which can be clipped on the hinge 9.
  • The lamp 13 is provided with electric contacts 17 which can be connected to a suitable electric source, not represented here, by means of a cable 18, whereby the hinge 9 is provided with a bore hole 19 via which the electric cable 18 can be guided so as to be connected with the aforesaid electric source via the hollow section of the hinge-mounted part 7 and/or 8.
  • The section 7 or 8 can also be provided with a cable duct to guide and protect the electric cable 18.
  • It is clear that, thanks to the aforesaid integration of the light in the arm 6, in particular in the hinge 9, the light occupies no or practically no additional space, so that no additional space should be provided in the casing 2 to hold the light when the awning 1 is folded up.
  • It is also clear that, in this manner, the light is protected very well against any possible weather conditions and possible vandalism, i.e. the lamp 13 as well as the electric cable 18.
  • Thanks to the integration in the hinge 9, the light will always be situated near the centre of the extension length L of the cloth 4 of the awning, such that the space which is covered by the cloth 4 of the awning is evenly lit as of a central point.
  • The integration of the hinge 9 in one of the hinge parts offers an additional advantage in that the hinge can serve as a cooling mass which, when the hinge is made of a heat-conducting material such as aluminium or the like, it can easily remove the heat dissipated by the light, such that overheating of the arm 6 and of the cloth 4 of the awning can be avoided.
  • It is also clear that the light must not necessarily be provided under a cap 14, but that the lamp 13 can be provided for example directly in a seating in the arm 6, in particular in the hinge 9.
