Abstract

Die Erfindung betrifft ein optisches Element, ein Verfahren zu seiner Herstellung und seine Verwendung als Isolator oder Polarisator. Ein erfindungsgemäßes optisches Element für ein Frequenzfenster aus dem elektromagnetischen Spektrum umfasst eine erste Komponente, die die Funktion einer Viertelwellenplatte besitzt, und eine sich hieran anschließende zweite Komponente, die einen zirkulären Dichroismus aufweist. Wird die erste Komponente von einer linear polarisierten Welle beaufschlagt, so findet das optische Element Verwendung als optischer Isolator. Wird jedoch die zweite Komponente von der linear polarisierten Welle beaufschlagt, so findet das optische Element Verwendung als optischer Polarisator. Ein erfindungsgemäßes optisches Element, das als optischer Isolator verwendet wird, lässt sich in Lasersystemen zur Verringerung oder Unterdrückung der Rückkopplung des Lasers einsetzen. Weiterhin werden damit Fenster möglich, die in einem bestimmten Frequenzfenster nur von einer Richtung aus durchsichtig sind. Für den infraroten Wellenlängenbereich ergibt sich damit unidirekt ionale Wärmeisolation.

Description

Optisches Element, Verfahren zu seiner Herstellung und seine Verwendung
Die Erfindung betrifft ein optisches Element, ein Verfahren zu seiner Herstellung und seine Verwendung als optischer Isolator oder Polarisator.
Ein optischer Isolator besitzt die Eigenschaft, elektromagnetische Strahlung, insbesondere aus dem ultravioletten, sichtbaren und infraroten Frequenzbereich, innerhalb eines bestimmten Frequenzfensters im Wesentlichen nur in eine Richtung ausbreiten (propagieren) zu lassen und die Transmission einer zurücklaufenden Lichtwelle abzuschwächen oder vollständig zu unterdrücken. Damit verringern bzw. unterbinden optische Isolatoren insbesondere das Problem der Rückkopplung in Lasern, das vor allem in Halbleiterlasern den Laserbetrieb erheblich beeinträchtigt .
Aus dem Stand der Technik sind optische Isolatoren bekannt, die auf dem Faraday-Effekt beruhen, bei dem ein statisches Magnetfeld die Polarisation des Lichts dreht. Stellt man ein derartiges Faraday- Element zwischen zwei, um 45° zueinander gedrehte Polarisatoren, so bildet sich dann ein optischer Isolator aus, wenn die Polarisation durch das Faraday-Element genau um 45° gedreht wird, was sich auf dem Hin- und Rückweg auf 90° aufsummiert. Der Faraday-Effekt erfordert jedoch ein statisches Magnetfeld zum Aufbau derartiger optischer Isolatoren.
Ein optischer Polarisator besitzt die Eigenschaft, elektromagnetischer Strahlung, insbesondere aus dem ultravioletten, sichtbaren und infraroten Frequenzbereich, innerhalb eines bestimmten Frequenzfensters einen festen Polarisationszustand zu verleihen. Optische Polarisatoren befinden sich daher nahezu in jedem optischen Aufbau.
Aus dem Stand der Technik sind optische Polarisatoren bekannt, die auf dem Brewsterwinkel beruhen. Daher müssen solche Polarisatoren un- ter einem Einfallswinkel betrieben werden, der vom senkrechten Einfall deutlich abweicht. Zudem entsteht eine starke Abhängigkeit der Polarisationsfunktion vom Einfallswinkel.
Aus J. Hwang, M. H. Song, B. Park, S. Nishimura, T. Toyooka, J. W. Wu, Y. Takanishi, K. Ishikawa und H. Takezoe, Electro-tunable optical diode based on photonic bandgap liquid-crystal heterojunctions, Na- ture Mater. 4, S. 383, 2005, ist eine optische Diode für zirkulär polarisiertes Licht bekannt, die sich jedoch nicht für die Isolation von Licht eignet. Fällt z.B. rechtshändig zirkulär polarisiertes Licht auf die optische Diode, wird dieses transmittiert . Stellt man hinter die optische Diode einen Spiegel, wird das rechtshändig zirkulär polarisierte Licht in linkshändig zirkulär polarisiertes Licht umgewandelt, das sich ungehindert durch die optische Diode ausbreiten kann, während in einem optischen Isolator die Ausbreitung des Lichts in Rückwärtsrichtung abgeschwächt oder ganz unterdrückt sein müsste.
Ausgehend hiervon ist es die Aufgabe der vorliegenden Erfindung, ein optisches Element, ein Verfahren zu seiner Herstellung und seine Verwendung als optischer Isolator bzw. Polarisator vorzuschlagen, das die aufgeführten Nachteile und Einschränkungen nicht aufweist.
Insbesondere soll das optische Element bei Verwendung als optischer Isolator kein statisches Magnetfeld benötigen, damit er kompakter aufgebaut werden kann und sich auch in magnetfeldsensitiven Anwendungen einsetzen lässt.
Insbesondere sollte das optische Element bei Verwendung als optischer Polarisator nicht auf dem Brewsterwinkel beruhen.
Diese Aufgabe wird im Hinblick auf das optische Element durch die Merkmale des Anspruchs 1, im Hinblick auf das Herstellungsverfahren durch die Schritte des Anspruchs 10 oder 11 und im Hinblick auf die Verwendung durch die Ansprüche 12 und 15 gelöst. Die Unteransprüche beschreiben jeweils vorteilhafte Ausgestaltungen der Erfindung. Ein erfindungsgemäßes optisches Element umfasst eine kompakte photonische Heterostruktur, die für ein bestimmtes, skalierbares Frequenzfenster isolierend wirkt. Die Heterostruktur weist mindestens zwei Komponenten auf, wobei die erste Komponente die Funktion einer Viertelwellenplatte besitzt und die zweite Komponente einen zirkulären Dichroismus aufweist.
Die Funktion der ersten Komponente als Viertelwellenplatte (λ/4 -Platte) wird vorzugsweise in Form einer achromatischen oder einer superachromatischen Verzögerungsplatte, insbesondere aus Quarz und MgF2, bereitgestellt. Damit lässt sich das optische Element über ein besonders breites Frequenzfenster aus dem elektromagnetischen Spektrum einsetzen.
In einer alternativen Ausgestaltung dient eine Struktur aus parallel zueinander angeordneten Lamellen als Viertelwellenplatte. Die Höhe der Lamellen wird hierbei so gewählt, dass die eine Komponente des elektrischen Feldes gegenüber der zu ihr senkrechten Komponente genau um eine viertel Wellenlänge phasenverschoben wird. Um eine möglichst guten Effekt für den Wellenlängenbereich um 1500 nm zu erzielen, ist bei einem Brechungsindex von n = 1,57 und einem Abstand der Lamellen von 1 μm eine Höhe der Lamellen von 4 μm erforderlich.
Die zweite Komponente besteht aus einem Material, das einen zirkulären Dichroismus besitzt, d.h. in dem rechts- und linkszirkular polarisiertes Licht unterschiedlich durchgelassen (transmittiert) wird. Ein derartiges Material ist dadurch ausgezeichnet, dass es sich nicht mit seinem Spiegelbild zur Deckung bringen lässt.
In einer bevorzugten Ausgestaltung wird hierfür ein chiraler photonischer Kristall eingesetzt. Besonders bevorzugt ist hierbei ein photonischer Kristall, der eine Vielzahl von parallel zueinander angeordneten Spiralen aufweist, deren Längsachsen senkrecht zur optischen Achse der ersten Komponente angeordnet sind. Weiterhin bevorzugt wird hierfür ein chiraler photonischer Kristall eingesetzt, der aus gegeneinander um einen Winkel, der ungleich 90° ist, verdrehten doppelbrechenden anisotropen Schichten aufgebaut ist.
In einer alternativen Ausgestaltung sind als zweite Komponente Turma- line sowie bestimmte Flüssigkristalle, insbesondere Cholesterine, geeignet. Letztere lassen sich insbesondere durch Selbstorganisation herstellen.
Ein erfindungsgemäßes optisches Element lässt sich, je nachdem ob die erste oder die zweite Komponente von einer linear polarisierten Welle beaufschlagt wird, als optischer Isolator oder als optischer Polarisator verwenden.
Wird die erste Komponente von einer linear polarisierten Welle beaufschlagt, so findet das optische Element Verwendung als optischer Isolator. Ein derartiger optischer Isolator lässt sich grundsätzlich in jedem Lasersystem zur Verringerung oder Unterdrückung der Rückkopplung des Lasers einsetzen. Bevorzugt ist die Verwendung in Halbleiterlasern in der Telekommunikation im nahen Infrarot.
Die Funktionsweise des auf der vorliegenden Erfindung beruhenden optischen Isolators lässt sich wie folgt erklären. Ist die optische Achse der Viertelwellenplatte 45° zur Lichteinfallsebene orientiert, so erzeugt die Viertelwellenplatte aus einfallendem linear polarisiertem Licht, das z.B. aus einem Laser stammt, zirkulär polarisiertes Licht. Dieses zirkulär polarisierte Licht tritt anschließend in die chirale Komponente ein und wird entsprechend der Händigkeit der chiralen Komponente transmittiert oder reflektiert. Ist die chirale Komponente rechtshändig, so wird die Ausbreitung von rechtshändig zirkulär polarisiertem Licht unterdrückt; ist die chirale Komponente linkshändig, so wird die Ausbreitung von linkshändig zirkulär polarisiertem Licht unterdrückt. Besitzt das zum optischen Isolator zurücklaufende Licht also gerade die andere Händigkeit, so liegt ein nicht- reziproker Charakter der Vorrichtung vor, d.h. das Licht kann sich nicht in Rückwärtsrichtung durch den Isolator ausbreiten.
Mit einem erfindungsgemäßen optischen Isolator, der einen zusätzlichen Polarisator als vierte Komponente aufweist, wird die rückwärtige Ausbreitung von Licht durch den Isolator innerhalb eines bestimmten Frequenzfensters erheblich verringert oder vollständig verhindert, so werden Fenster möglich, die in einem bestimmten Frequenzfenster für ultraviolettes oder sichtbares Licht nur von einer Richtung aus durchsichtig sind. Skaliert auf den infraroten Wellenlängenbereich ergibt sich damit unidirektionale Wärmeisolation: In einem Passivhaus tritt Wärmestrahlung von außen in das Haus ein, Wärmestrahlung kann jedoch nicht aus dem Haus austreten.
Wird die zweite Komponente von einer linear polarisierten Welle beaufschlagt, so findet das optische Element Verwendung als optischer Polarisator zur Erzeugung von polarisiertem ultraviolettem, sichtbarem oder infrarotem Licht.
Die Funktionsweise des auf der vorliegenden Erfindung beruhenden optischen Polarisators lässt sich wie folgt erklären. Trifft unpolari- siertes Licht auf eine Komponente, die zirkulären Dichroismus aufweist, so erzeugt diese einen reflektierten und einen transmittierten Anteil des Lichts, wobei beide Anteile zirkulär polarisiert sind. Ist die optische Achse der Viertelwellenplatte um 45° zur Lichteinfallsebene orientiert, so erzeugt die Viertelwellenplatte aus zirkulär polarisiertem Licht linear polarisiertes Licht.
In der erfindungsgemäßen Ausgestaltung mit einer ersten und einer zweiten Komponente, wobei die erste einen zirkulär Dichroismus aufweist und die zweite eine Viertelwellenplatte ist, entsteht ein zirkulär polarisierter reflektierter Anteil und ein linear polarisierter transmittierter Anteil. In der besonderen Ausgestaltung mit drei Komponenten ist eine dritte Komponente, die sich an die zweite Komponente anschließt, vorgesehen, wobei die optische Achse der dritten Komponente, die wiederum aus einer Viertelwellenplatte besteht, senkrecht zur optischen Achse der ersten Komponente angeordnet ist, vorgesehen. In diesem Falle wird auch der Reflex linear polarisiert, allerdings um 90° gedreht zur transmittierten Polarisation.
Ein erfindungsgemäßes optisches Element lässt sich mittels direktem Laserschreiben herstellen. Für die Herstellung größerer Flächen eignen sich so genannte Mikrolinsenarrays im Direkten Laserschreiben o- der holographische Verfahren. Ein weiteres mögliches Verfahren ist die Abscheidung unter streifendem Winkel, die auch als Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD) bezeichnet wird.
Die Erfindung weist die im Folgenden erwähnten Vorteile auf.
Erfindungsgemäße optische Elemente, die als optische Isolatoren verwendet werden, benötigen im Unterschied zu den Faraday-Isolatoren kein statisches Magnetfeld. Der Verzicht auf ein statisches Magnetfeld erlaubt den Einsatz in magnetfeldsensitiven Anwendungen und ermöglicht die Herstellung dünnerer und großflächiger optischer Isolatoren. Der erfindungsgemäße optische Isolator lässt sich damit sehr kompakt aufbauen. Damit wird die Integration in optische Systeme, z.B. hinter den Auskoppelspiegel eines Lasers, einfach möglich.
Erfindungsgemäße optische Elemente, die als optische Polarisatoren verwendet werden, müssen nicht unter einem bestimmten Einfallswinkel, dem Brewster-Winkel betrieben werden, der vom senkrechten Einfall deutlich abweicht. Die Abhängigkeit der Polarisation vom Einfallswinkel ist für kleine Winkel gering.
Die Erfindung wird im Folgenden anhand von Ausführungsbeispielen und den Figuren näher erläutert. Hierbei zeigen: Fig. 1 Schematische Darstellung eines optischen Elements aus zwei

Fig. Ia) zeigt schematisch ein erfindungsgemäßes optisches Element, das als optischer Isolator verwendet wird, wobei eine Viertelwellenplatte als erste Komponente 1 von einer linear polarisierten Welle 10 beaufschlagt wird und das weiterhin aus einer zweiten Komponente 2, die einen zirkulären Dichroismus besitzt, besteht.
Fig. Ib) zeigt schematisch ein erfindungsgemäßes optisches Element, das als optischer Polarisator verwendet wird, wobei die zweite Komponente 2, die einen zirkulären Dichroismus besitzt, von einer linear polarisierten Welle 10 beaufschlagt wird und das weiterhin aus einer Viertelwellenplatte als erste Komponente 1 besteht.
Fig. 2 zeigt schematisch ein erfindungsgemäßes optisches Element, das von einer linear polarisierten Welle 10 beaufschlagt wird und das aus einer Viertelwellenplatte als erster Komponente 1, aus einer zweiten Komponente 2, die einen zirkulären Dichroismus besitzt, und aus einer weiteren Viertelwellenplatte als dritter Komponente 3 besteht. Fig. 3 zeigt schematisch eine erfindungsgemäße Anordnung aus einem optischen Element, das aus einer Viertelwellenplatte als erster Komponente 1 und aus einer zweiten Komponente 2, die einen zirkulären Dichroismus besitzt, besteht und zusätzlich einen Polarisator 4 als vierte Komponente aufweist.
Fig. 4 zeigt ein Beispiel eines optischen Elements, das sich auf einem Substrat 5 befindet und bei dem die erste Komponente 1 in Form einer Lamellenstruktur und die zweite Komponente 2 als Spiralstruktur ausgeführt ist, wobei die optische Achse 11 der ersten Komponente 1 senkrecht zur optischen Achse 12 der zweiten Komponente 2 steht. Ein derartiges optisches Element wurde im Labor mittels direktem Laserschreiben hergestellt.
Fig. 5 a) zeigt ein Beispiel eines optischen Elements, das sich auf einem Substrat 5 befindet und bei dem die erste Komponente 1 in Form einer Lamellenstruktur, die zweite Komponente 2 als Spiralstruktur und die dritte Komponente 3 ebenfalls in Form einer Lamellenstruktur ausgeführt ist, wobei die optische Achse 11 der ersten Komponente 1 sowohl senkrecht zur optischen Achse 12 der zweiten Komponente 2 als auch zur gleichen optischen Achse 13 der dritten Komponente 3 steht. Ein derartiges optisches Element wurde im Labor ebenfalls mittels direktem Laserschreiben hergestellt.
In Fig. 5 b), c) und d) sind bevorzugte Dimensionen der Spiralstruktur des chiralen photonischen Kristalls für die Verwendung des optischen Elements im Bereich der Telekommunikation, d.h. für Wellenlängen von 1000 nm bis 1600 nm dargestellt. Hierbei sollten Abstand und Periode der Spiralen 1 μm bis 1,5 μm, bevorzugt ca. 1,2 μm, betragen und der Durchmesser der Spiralen im Bereich von 0,5 μm bis 1 μm, bevorzugt ca. 0,72 μm, liegen. Für die Voxelform im direkten Laserschreiben wurde ein Verhältnis von χ = 2 gewählt, wobei im Allgemeinen ein Verhältnis von χ = 1 bis χ = 5 ebenso geeignet ist. Als Materialien eignen sich polymere Photoresiste wie z.B. SU- 8, Chalcogenid- gläser wie z.B. As2S3 oder Silizium. In Fig. 6 ist ein weiteres Beispiel für die zweite Komponente eines optischen Elements dargestellt, die aus einem photonischen Kristall besteht, der aus gegeneinander um einen Winkel, der ungleich 90° ist, verdrehten doppelbrechenden anisotropen Schichten aufgebaut ist, der sich auf einem Substrat befindet. Derartige photonische Kristalle meist mit einem Winkel von 90° werden als wood-pile Struktur bezeichnet.
Fig. 7 zeigt experimentell aufgenommene Transmissionsspektren über einen Wellenlängenbereich von 1000 bis ca. 1750 nm eines erfindungsgemäßen optischen Elements, das aus zwei Komponenten aus dem Negativ- Polymerlack SU- 8 (Brechungsindex n = 1.57) besteht. Gemäß Figur 4 dient eine Lamellenstruktur mit einer Gitterkonstante von 1 μm und einer Höhe von 4 μm als Viertelwellenplatte. Eine Spiralstruktur mit einer Gitterkonstante von 1,2 μm wird als chirales Element eingesetzt.
Aus den Transmissionsspektren ist deutlich erkennbar, dass sich die Transmission im Bereich von 1500 nm bis ca. 1800 nm deutlich ändert, falls die Schwingungsebene des eingestrahlten Lichts im 45° oder -45° Winkel eingestrahlt wird. Zudem wurde die Hauptachse um 90° gedreht. Erwartungsgemäß zeigen sich komplementäre Ergebnisse. Damit ist nachgewiesen, dass sich dieses optische Element für den Einsatz in einem Frequenzfenster von 170 bis 200 THz eignet.

Claims

Patentansprüche
1. Optisches Element für ein Frequenzfenster aus dem elektromagnetischen Spektrum, das eine erste Komponente, die die Funktion einer Viertelwellenplatte besitzt, und eine sich daran anschließende zweite Komponente, die einen zirkulären Dichroismus aufweist, um- fasst .
2. Optisches Element nach Anspruch 1, das zusätzlich eine sich an die zweite Komponente anschließende dritte Komponente aufweist, wobei die dritte Komponente die Funktion einer Viertelwellenplatte besitzt und die optische Achse der dritten Komponente senkrecht zur optischen Achse der ersten Komponente angeordnet ist.
3. Optisches Element Anspruch 1, das zusätzlich eine sich an die erste Komponente anschließende vierte Komponente aufweist, wobei die vierte Komponente die Funktion eines Polarisators besitzt und die vierte Komponente parallel zur ersten Komponente angeordnet ist.
4. Optisches Element nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3 mit einer achromatischen oder superachromatischen Verzögerungsplatte als Viertelwellenplatte .
5. Optisches Element nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3 mit einer Struktur aus parallel zueinander angeordneten Lamellen als Viertelwellenplatte .
6. Optisches Element nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5 mit einem chi- ralen photonischen Kristall als zweite Komponente.
7. Optisches Element nach Anspruch 6 mit einem photonischen Kristall aus einer Vielzahl von parallel zueinander angeordneten Spiralen, deren Längsachsen senkrecht zur optischen Achse der ersten Kompo- nente angeordnet sind.
8. Optisches Element nach Anspruch 6 mit einem photonischen Kristall, der aus gegeneinander um einen Winkel ungleich 90° verdrehten doppelbrechenden anisotropen Schichten aufgebaut ist.
9. Optisches Element nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5 mit choleste- rischen Flüssigkristallen als zweite Komponente.
10. Verfahren zur Herstellung eines optischen Elements nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 8 mittels direktem Laserschreiben oder mittels Holographie hergestellt wird.
11. Verfahren zur Herstellung eines optischen Elements nach Anspruch 9, wobei die zweite Komponente durch Selbstorganisation der cho- lesterischen Flüssigkristalle hergestellt wird.
12. Verwendung eines optischen Elements nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 9, wobei die erste Komponente von einer linear polarisierten Welle beaufschlagt wird, als optischer Isolator.
13. Verwendung nach Anspruch 12 zur Verringerung der Rückkopplung in einen Laser.
14. Verwendung nach Anspruch 12 zur Verringerung der Ausbreitung von ultraviolettem, sichtbarem oder infrarotem Licht in eine Richtung.
15. Verwendung eines optischen Elements nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 9, wobei die zweite Komponente von einer linear polarisierten Welle beaufschlagt wird, als optischer Polarisator.
