Description

The present invention relates to a printable fringed edge sheet (s) for the ink jet printing process. The invention more particularly relates to a sheet with fringed edge (s) coated with a pigmented layer which has good printability in ink jet printing. The invention also relates to the method of manufacturing such a sheet.

In printing techniques that are flexible enough to produce small quantities on demand, inkjet printing has proven to be the most suitable technique for fringed-edge sheets. In addition to the simplicity of its operating principle, inkjet printing provides color printing. However, inkjet printing of sheets such as papers causes problems related to the inkjet printing principle itself which are as follows:
  • the ink drying time is long because the vehicle of the ink is an aqueous medium,
  • a lack of color homogeneity ("mottling"), that is to say a cloudy aspect observed in certain places, whether for a single color or for a combination of colors,
  • the presence of burrs, that is to say a color that overflows the support or colors that overlap one another,
  • too low color intensity,
  • too low resolution of impressions,
  • poor print water resistance, that is, the prints do not resist well when the substrate is wet,
  • a piercing of the ink through the sheet.

Since the inkjet printing technique is based on the principle of fixing ink on the surface of the print medium, the print medium must therefore have a limited absorption in order to obtain a clean impression. high quality.

In order to solve the aforementioned problems, substrates improved by coating their surface with an inkjet printable layer have been proposed. Indeed, it is known from the state of the art that the printability properties of a fibrous sheet, based on natural and / or synthetic fibers, are improved by coating the surface of said sheet with a pigmented composition. comprising ink-fixing particles ( US-A1- 2005/0266180 ).

However, the currently marketed fringed leaves such as, for example, watercolor papers with fringed edges, are papers with two or even four fringed edges free of pigmented layer, in particular free of any pigmented layer specific to printing by inkjet.

  • l'application d'une couche imprimable par jet d'encre en surface d'un support, comme par exemple une feuille de papier, à bords frangés générerait des surépaisseurs ou des irrégularités de surface indésirables notamment en bordure du support. En effet, l'Homme du Métier pensait que la couche ne serait pas répartie de façon homogène, les bords du support (ou feuille de papier) étant revêtus plus fortement par la composition de la couche compte-tenu de la présence de franges;
  • un tel support revêtu d'une couche imprimable ne présenterait alors pas le même lissé de surface sur toute sa surface de par la non-homogénéité de répartition de la couche fixatrice d'encre (présence de zones à forte ou faible concentration de composition de couche), ceci s'avérant incompatible avec les qualités requises pour un support destiné à un procédé d'impression par jet d'encre où la couche de surface joue un rôle fondamental dans le rendu d'impression;
  • par ailleurs, l'Homme du Métier pensait que l'application d'une couche de surface, notamment imprimable par jet d'encre, sur un support à bords frangés engendrerait des relargages de fibres sur les bords dudit support provoquant ainsi une pollution de la couche du fait de la présence de débris de fibres; ceci serait particulièrement gênant lors de la fabrication dudit papier couché à bords frangés pour lequel on recherche de bonnes caractéristiques de rendu d'impression et de surface ;
The application of a pigmented layer for inkjet printing on the surface of a foil with fringed edges has hitherto been considered by those skilled in the art as being able to generate only a number of manufacturing problems due to the sheets. fringed edges themselves. Some of these various problems are listed below:
  • the application of an inkjet printable layer on the surface of a support, such as for example a sheet of paper, with fringed edges would generate undesirable thickenings or surface irregularities notably at the edge of the support. Indeed, the skilled person thought that the layer would not be homogeneously distributed, the edges of the support (or paper sheet) being coated more strongly by the composition of the layer taking into account the presence of fringes;
  • such a support coated with a printable layer would then not have the same surface smoothness over its entire surface due to the non-homogeneous distribution of the ink-fixing layer (presence of zones with a high or low concentration of layer composition ), this being incompatible with the qualities required for a support for an inkjet printing process where the surface layer plays a fundamental role in the print rendering;
  • Moreover, the skilled person thought that the application of a surface layer, especially inkjet printable, on a fringed-edge support would cause the release of fibers on the edges of said support thus causing pollution of the surface. layer due to the presence of fiber debris; this would be particularly troublesome during the manufacture of said coated paper with fringed edges for which good looking print and surface characteristics are sought;
  • Moreover, the skilled person traditionally using for the pigmented layers a coating device metal blade, thought that such a sleeping device could be at the origin of many breaks. For the skilled person, the mechanical stresses of pressure and tension during the contact of the metal blade with the sheet would be particularly troublesome during the coating knowing that the fringed edges come from areas of lesser thickness (material deficit) made in the sheet during its manufacture.

For example, we can refer to the document PULP and PAPER MANUFACTURE, Second Edition, vol. II, published in 1969, in which pages 463 to 465 in Chapter 9.9, on the properties of a paper, especially in the last paragraph of page 464, first column, it is stated that "it is agreed that notches and cracks in the edges will cause breaks in the most coaters and are particularly harmful to coaters. " In the document Essential Guide to Aqueous Coating of Paper and Board, Section 2.72 published in 1997 in 2.72, difficulties of machinability in coaters are also mentioned when the edges are not sharp.

In view of the above, the leaves with fringed edges are traditionally in the paper industry subjected to a fringed edge cutting operation, also called "edge trimming", so as to eliminate these edges to obtain leaves with edges right and clear, and this prior to any coating operation to improve the printability of the sheet. Indeed, the deposition of an ink-fixing layer has always been carried out so far on a straight-edged sheet, that is to say a sheet whose fringed edges have been trimmed before the coating operation. .

The present invention therefore proposes to provide a fringe printing medium (s) printable by inkjet, that is to say having the qualities required for inkjet printing in term print rendering, ink drying time, and color intensity and homogeneity.

According to a first aspect, the invention lies in a sheet with fringed edge (s) coated with a suitable ink-fixing layer to obtain good printability by ink jet (thus coated) and having a given format. , for example, forming A4, that is to say a sheet with fringe (s) lying (s), printable by ink jet.

According to a second aspect, the invention aims to solve the problems of coating sheets with fringed edge (s) by proposing a method of manufacturing a sheet with fringed edge (s) lying, printable by jet in which a sheet with at least one fringe edge (s) is surface-treated with an ink-fixing layer. The method of manufacturing such a sheet according to the present invention goes against the prejudices of the skilled person.

The invention thus relates to an ink-coated, ink-coated fringed edge sheet (s) which comprises a support with at least one fringed edge (s) covered, on at least one of its at least one ink-fixing pigment-fixing layer for ink-jet printing.

According to one embodiment of the invention, the pigment-fixing ink-fixing layer has a weight of between 3 and 30 g / m 2 by dry weight per side. More particularly, the weight of said pigmented layer is between 5 and 15 g / m 2 in sec, per side. According to the invention, the ink-fixing pigment layer, which is a printable surface layer, comprises at least one binder and at least one coating pigment.

As binder of the pigmented layer, mention may be made of the binders chosen from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinylpyrrolidone, starch, the polymeric binders used in stabilized aqueous dispersion (latex) and customary ink-fixing layers. or the paper industry such as, for example, styrene / butadiene, styrene / acrylic, ethylene / vinyl acetate / vinyl chloride copolymers, alone or in admixture.

The pigments of said pigment-fixing ink-fixing layer may be chosen from mineral pigments such as calcium carbonates, kaolin, talc, titanium dioxide, plastic pigments, silica, aluminum oxides, taken alone. or in mixture.

In the particular case of the invention in which the inorganic coating pigments are transparent or translucent, especially amorphous silicas such as, for example, amorphous precipitating or pyrogenic silicas having a specific surface area greater than 100 m 2 / g, the The support may be colored in bulk and / or on the surface, the coloration remaining visible through said pigmented layer.

According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the support with at least one fringed edge is a paper based on cellulose fibers, in particular cotton, optionally mixed with synthetic and / or mineral fibers.

Preferably, said fibrous support is chosen from papers based essentially on cotton fibers, in particular watercolor papers.

According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the fibrous support with at least one fringed edge may be manufactured on a round-shaped paper machine, and then be laid out of the machine by any usual paper coating device.

Preferably, said fibrous support before coating is a fibrous support with two fringed edges, which may have at the end of its formation on the paper machine areas of lesser thickness of fibers in the cross machine direction. Said support, after the off-machine coating operation, then gives a fibrous support lying on two fringed edges which will lead:
  • or, to a sheet with two fringed edges lying down, printable by ink jet when a straight and sharp cutting operation is performed at said areas of least thickness present in the cross-direction of the support to give formatted sheets with two edges fringed according to the invention,
  • or to a sheet with four fringed edges coated, ink jet printable, when a rupture of the support at its areas of least thickness in the cross direction is achieved by a particular setting of the cutter to give sheets formatted to four fringed edges according to the invention.

  3. c) on découpe ledit support.
The invention further relates to a method of manufacturing a fringed sheet (s) inkjet printable, coated, comprising the following steps:
  1. a) a fibrous support having at least one fringed edge is formed on a paper machine, and
  2. b) at least one of the faces of this support is deposited at least one ink-fixing pigmented layer, and
  3. c) cutting said support.

According to the method of manufacturing a sheet with fringed edge (s) of the invention, it is possible to form, in a first step, a fibrous support with at least one fringed edge by papermaking on a paper machine of round shape from an aqueous dispersion of cellulose fibers, in particular of cotton, optionally in mixing with synthetic and / or mineral fibers, and optionally other additives such as binders such as starch, polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethyl cellulose, fillers, retention agents, dyes. In a particular case, the support having at least one fringed edge may consist essentially of cotton fibers.

Preferably, a support with two fringed edges, in particular a watercolor paper with two fringes (s), and presenting areas of less fiber thickness in the cross machine direction.

According to the method of the invention, in a second step b), it is deposited by means of a coating device on at least one of the faces of the support with fringed edge (s) obtained at the end of the step a) (also called "support with at least one fringed edge") at least one pigmented layer (also called "ink-fixing layer") printable by inkjet.

Said pigmented layer applied to the support obtained in step a) of the process is a surface layer as defined above, an ink jet printable ink fixator and which comprises at least one binder and at least one coating pigment .

According to the process of the invention, said support having at least one fringed edge resulting from step a) can be coated by any coating device usually used in stationery. Advantageously, an air knife coater or a curtain coating device may be used.

According to a preferred variant of implementation of the process, the fibrous support resulting from step a) has two fringed edges which are obtained by a rupture of said support at the level of the zones of lesser thickness of fibers created in the running direction of the machine. paper, zones preferably of the number of three-namely close to each of the two edges of said support and in its median zone-, creating two support strips with two fringed edges of identical size of width. The fibrous support with two fringed edges thus obtained, at the end of step a), has areas of least fiber thickness in the cross machine direction.

After the coating operation of step b) of the process, the fibrous support coated with two fringed edges, which presented at the end of its training on the machine to paper of the areas of lesser thickness of fibers in the cross direction, undergoes a cutting operation to give leaves with fringed edge (s)) according to the invention.

This cutting operation of step c) of the method according to the invention is done by means of a cutter. According to the setting of said cutter, said support resulting from step c) of the process will give a sheet with two fringed edges or a sheet with four fringed edges according to the invention.

Those skilled in the art are able to make the precise and necessary adjustments to obtain a sheet with two fringed edges or four fringed edges according to the invention.

A straight and sharp cutting operation carried out at the level of said zones of lesser thickness present in the cross-machine direction of the sheet will give sheets formatted with two fringed edges lying down and printable by inkjet according to the invention, while a rupture of the sheet at its areas of lesser thickness, by a particular adjustment of the speed of the cutter, will cause formatted sheets with four edges fringed, coated and printable by ink jet according to the invention.

According to one embodiment of the method of the invention, the coating step b) and / or the cutting step c) can be performed off the paper machine.

In a particular embodiment of the method according to the invention, steps b) and c) are performed outside the paper machine. The coating operation - step b) is then preferably carried out by an air knife coater or a curtain coater.

According to another embodiment of the method of the invention, steps a) and b) can be carried out online, for example by means of an inline curtain coating device on the paper machine, while that step c) of cutting is performed off paper machine.

According to a particular case of implementation of the method according to the invention, a sheet with fringed edge (s), preferably with two fringed edges, more preferably with four fringed edges, lying down and printable by inkjet can advantageously be manufactured entirely online on a paper machine, without performing operations of coating and cutting off machine that increase manufacturing costs.

According to the invention, the sheet with fringed edge (s) coated obtained by the method as described above has the characteristic of being printable by jet of ink, and to present the qualities required for inkjet printing, especially in terms of print rendering.

Finally, the invention relates to the use of a fringed sheet (s) printable and coated according to the invention to make inkjet printing.

Exemplary embodiment of a sheet with four fringed edges according to the invention.

According to the invention, a fibrous support is produced on a round paper machine, namely a watercolor paper with two fringed edges, having a basis weight of 507 g / m 2 , and this from an aqueous suspension of fibers of cotton.

As schematically represented on the figure 1 the sheet metal forming cylinder of the round-shaped paper machine, according to a conventional papermaking process, has on its surface metal wires denoted 1A, 1B (according to the conventional principle of forming clear watermarks) which will cause a deposit less fibers in their areas during the formation of the fibrous support thus creating areas of lesser thickness of pulp both in the direction of walking (areas marked A) and in the cross direction (areas marked B) of the machine.

A fine stream of water positioned at the location of the three zones (denoted A on the figure 2 ) of smaller thickness created in the running direction of the paper machine, namely on each outer edge and on the middle portion of the forming paper sheet as shown in the figure 2 , allows cutting of the forming sheet on each of these edges with elimination of a small strip of material and the creation, because of the cutting in the middle zone, of two strips of watercolor paper with two fringed edges and each having an identical size of width. These two strips of watercolor paper are conveyed to the dryer of the paper machine to be dried, then they are wound into two separate reels at the end of the paper machine, thus forming two coils of a fibrous support with two fringed edges, that is, two coils of watercolor paper having two fringed edges, of a grammage of 507 g / m 2 .

Next, one side of this two fringed edge medium is coated with an ink jet printable pigment layer composed of 100 parts by dry weight of precipitated silica and 40 parts by dry weight of polyvinyl alcohol.

Deposition of said pigmented layer is performed by means of an air knife coater. The sheet coated with two fringed edges thus obtained is then dried and wound into a coil at the end of coater, it has areas of smaller thickness (denoted B) in the cross direction.

This coil of coated sheet with two fringed edges is then placed on a cutter that the skilled person is able to adjust so as to cause the rupture of the sheet at its areas of lower thickness (noted B on the figure 3 ) present in the cross machine direction. The sheets of paper obtained at the end of the cutter are therefore sheets of watercolor paper coated with four fringed edges, that is to say, formats with four fringed edges.

The implementation of the manufacturing process did not cause a problem of breakage or release of fibers.

The watercolor paper sheet coated with four fringed edges obtained has good printability by inkjet.
