Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a window that includes a frame, a window sash and two sets of pivot arms by means of which the window sash is pivotally affixed to the frame.
  • Such windows are found to a large extent in dwellings and in official buildings.
  • the upper or the lower end of the sash is guided displaceably in vertical channels arranged at the side members of the frame.
  • the sash is also fixed to the side members of the frame with the aid of two pivot mechanisms or fittings and can be rotated about a horizontal axis defined by axle pins on the pivot mechanisms.
  • the other end of the sash is displaced outwardly at the same time as the sash is rotated about the horizontal axis.
  • one side of the sash is, instead, guided displaceably in horizontal channels provided at the top and bottom members of the frame, so as to enable the sash to be rotated reversibly about a vertical axis.
  • a sealing strip or the like may then by arranged between cooperating sealing surfaces on the frame and on the sash, respectively.
  • the sealing surfaces should preferably be parallel with the plane of the window, so that the sealing strip will be squeezed together when closing the window.
  • a different type of sealing strip may be placed between sealing surfaces that are generally perpendicular to the window plane, in other words that are parallel with the opening and closing directions of the window. Since such strips will not be compressed to any larger extent when closing the window, they will not provide a satisfactory seal from an energy saving aspect, but may be suitable for preventing the penetration of dirt, dust and other foreign particles such as to protect the hinge mechanisms or fittings.
  • Another very important aspect of such windows is the dimensioning of the frame, the sashes and the fittings.
  • the so-called ledge depth that constitutes the distance between the outermost outwardly facing surface of the frame and the interior of this surface arrranged outwardly facing surface, with which the frame is in sealing abutment when the window is closed.
  • This latter surface is normally referred to as the abutment surface for the sash.
  • hinge mechanism It should be possible to readily fit the hinge mechanism to standard frames and sashes without requiring particular working or treatment thereof. It is, of course, also of great importance that the hinge mechanisms are durable and reliable. It is also particularly important that the gap between the frame and the sash can be kept as small as possible, even when the intermediate hinge mechanism is fitted. For manufacturing reasons of an economic nature with regard to both the hinge mechanisms and the fitted window it is desirable that one and the same type and size of hinge mechanism can be used in the production of windows whose size varies within the widest possible limits.
  • EP 0 542 050 A1 describes a window fitting where the upper or lower end of the sash is guided displaceably along the frame and can be turned through 180° about a horizontal axis.
  • the fitting includes a hinge mechanism which is attached to a side member of the frame by means of a frame plate.
  • the hinge mechanism includes a first and a second pivot arm that each has a first end which is pivotally attached to the frame plate and a third pivot arm which is pivotally attached in the proximity of a first end to the second ends of the first and second pivot arms.
  • the third pivot arm also includes a shaft pivot that defines the rotational axis of the sash and that is placed at the second end of the third pivot arm.
  • a sealing strip can be arranged inwardly of the fitting between two sealing surfaces which are disposed on the sash and fram, respectively, and arranged in parallel with the plane of the window.
  • One object of the present invention is to provide an improved window. Another object of the invention is to provide such a window that has an improved sealing and/or insulating capacity. A particular object of the present invention is to provide such a window which permits the use of two seals that are placed outwardly of one another between the frame and sash.
  • the inventive window has an inside and an outside and includes a window frame, a window sash and two sets of pivot arms which are movable in respective movement planes that are mutually parallel and perpendicular to a rotational axis about which the sash is rotatably fixed by means of the sets of pivot arms to opposing frame members of the frame, and a guide means arranged at the frame for guiding the movement of the sash relative to the frame.
  • the window also includes at least two seals which are arranged one externally of the other, one of which when the window is closed sealingly abuts a first sealing surface which is disposed on the guide and a corresponding first sealing surface on the window sash.
  • the two first sealing surfaces are arranged generally parallel to the plane of the window so as to allow compression of the first seal in the window closing direction.
  • the guide is also utilized as a sealing surface which enables the provision of two sealing strips placed externally of one another without needing to increase the thickness of the window frame to this end.
  • One of the sealing surfaces of the frame is thus comprised of a portion of the guide while the other sealing surface may be comprised of the frame's normal abutment surface for the sash.
  • the present invention enables both of these sealing surfaces to be disposed so as to be parallel with the plane of the window without obstructing free movement of the pivot arms. This allow the use of two sealing strips or the like which are compressed parallel with the force by which the sash is brought into abutment with the frame.
  • the guide will conveniently include a cross-sectional proile that includes an outwardly open channel for receiving a slide which is affixed to the sash and at least a portion of one of the pivot arms.
  • a cross-sectional proile that includes an outwardly open channel for receiving a slide which is affixed to the sash and at least a portion of one of the pivot arms.
  • the open channel will conveniently accommodate the movement plane of at least one pivot arm in each set of pivot arms. This enables the use of advantageous geometry with small frame dimensions, while at the same time ensuring that there will be obtained satisfactory freedom of movement of the pivot arms.
  • the first sealing surface on the guide is preferably generally perpendicular to the plane of movement of the pivot arms so that a sealing strip in abutment with the guide will be compressed in the direction of movement by the force with which the sash abuts the frame when the window is closed. This enables a satisfactory seal and insulation between frame and sash from the aspect of energy and acoustics.
  • the sealing and insulating effect of the sealing strip can be enhanced still further by arranging the first sealing surface on the sash generally in parallel with the first sealing surface on the guide.
  • the second seal is conveniently disposed between coacting second sealing surfaces on the frame and the sash, this second sealing surface being disposed inwardly of the first sealing surfaces on the guide and the sash, respectively.
  • this enables the window to be given a simple construction without negatively influencing the freedom of movement of the pivot arms.
  • the second sealing surfaces are preferably also generally perpendicular to the movement plane of the pivot arms. This also enables the second sealing strip to be compressed in the direction of movement of the sash such as to obtain satisfactory sealing and insulation with regard to energy and sound.
  • a third seal may be provided outwardly of the first and the second seal.
  • the third seal may be disposed between mutually coacting third sealing surfaces on the frame and on the sash, said third sealing surfaces being generally parallel with the movement plane of the pivot arms.
  • the third seal may thus be given the form of some sort of sliding seal which primarily prevents the ingress of dirt, dust and moisture between frame and sash so as to thereby protect the pivot arms.
  • the guide may be formed of a profiled section which forms an integrated part of the frame. This enables each frame member to be made in a single piece.
  • the guide may be formed of a separate profiled element which is affixed to the frame. This simplifies manufacture of the frame members, which can be given a relatively simple cross-section geometry.
  • the frame members and the guide may also be made from different materials.
  • the guide may be formed partially by an integrated part of the frame and partly by a profiled element affixed to the frame.
  • the guide may be formed by a groove milled in the frame and an L-shaped profiled element accommodated in the groove.
  • Figure 1 illustrates an outwardly opened window of the kind that can be provided with two seals according to the invention.
  • the window has an outer side which faces towards the left in figure 1 and an inner side which faces towards the right.
  • the window includes a frame 10, a sash 20 and a suspension device 30 with which the sash 20 is affixed pivotally to the frame 10.
  • the frame 10 has an outwardly facing outer surface 11, which in the case of the illustrated embodiment lies generally in the same plane as the outer surface 21 of the sash when the window is closed. Alternatively the outwardly facing surface of the frame may be disposed outwardly of the outer surface of the sash.
  • the window frame also includes an abutment surface 12 for the sash which extends parallel with the outer surface 11 and which is arranged inwardly thereof.
  • the suspension device 30 includes a frame plate 31 which is affixed to a side member of the frame 10.
  • a first pivot arm, the so-called long arm 32 is pivotally affixed to an upper part of the frame plate 31.
  • a second pivot arm, the short arm 33 is pivotally affixed to a lower part of the frame plate 31.
  • a third pivot arm, the sash arm 34 is pivotally affixed to the respective free ends of the long arm 32 and the short arm 33.
  • the sash arm 34 includes a pin (not shown) by means of which the sash 20 is pivotally affixed to the sash arm 34.
  • the short arm 33 also includes a recess 33a in which the lower end of the long arm 32 is received supportively when the window is closed.
  • the long arm 32 and the short arm 33 are arranged in mutually the same plane said plane also constituting the movement plane of these arms.
  • the sash arm 34 is arranged in a plane which constitutes the movement plane of the sash arm and which is parallel with and slightly offset laterally of the movement plane of the long arm 32 and the short arm 33.
  • the movement planes of the hinged arms 32, 33, 34 are perpendicular to the pin and to the pivot axis of the sash.
  • Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the present invention fitted to a window in which the frame 10 and the sash 20 are formed by profiled elements comprised, for instance, of aluminium.
  • the suspension device 30 includes a guide 40 formed with an open channel 41.
  • the channel accommodates a slide which is affixed to the upper part of the sash for rectilinear guidance of the upper part of the sash when the window is rotated about its rotational axis.
  • the channel 41 is arranged straight inwards of the long arm 32 and the short arm 33, so that the movement plane of these hinge arms will extend in through the channel opening and be accommodated by the channel 41.
  • a portion of the short arm 33 protrudes into the open channel 41 in this closed position.
  • Figures 2 and 3 also show how an outwardly facing surface of the guide 40 forms a first sealing surface 42 of the frame.
  • This first sealing surface 42 is generally parallel with the main plane of the window and perpendicular to the movement plane of the pivot arms 32, 33, 34.
  • the sash 20 has a corresponding first sealing surface 25 which extends parallel with the first sealing surface 42 of the frame and faces towards said surface.
  • a first sealing strip 51 is inserted into and affixed to a laterally open groove 26 in the sash. The first sealing strip 51 is thereby clamped firmly between the two first sealing surfaces 42, 25 on the frame 10 and the sash 20, respectively, when the window is closed.
  • the frame also includes inwardly of the first sealing surface 42 a second sealing surface 43 which is parallel with the first sealing surface 42 on the frame.
  • the sash 20 has a corresponding second sealing surface 27 which is parallel with the second sealing surface 43 of the frame and faces towards said surface 43.
  • a second sealing strip 52 is inserted into a laterally open second channel 28 in the sash and affixed thereto. The second sealing strip 52 is also clamped firmly between the two second sealing surfaces 43, 27 on the frame 10 and the sash 20, respectively, when the window is closed.
  • the window frame also includes outwardly of the guide 40 a groove 15 which is open laterally towards the sash.
  • a third sealing surface 16 is provided parallel with the movement plane of the pivot arms on respective sides of the groove opening.
  • a third sealing strip 53 is accommodated in and fixed to the groove 15. When the window is closed the third sealing strip 53 lies in abutment with a corresponding third sealing surface 29 on the sash.
  • This sealing surface 29 is parallel with the movement plane of the pivot arms 32, 33, 34 so that when closing the window the sealing strip will be deformed only slightly so as to provide protection against weather and wind and soiling of the pivot arms.
  • this third sealing strip 53 does not, afford the same high degree of sealing and insulating the window with regard to energy and acoustics as the first sealing strip 51 and the second sealing strip 42 which are squeezed tightly together.
  • the window described in the aforegoing text is effectively sealed.
  • an effective sealing and insulation with regard to energy and sound aspects is achieved by the above described window according to the invention.
  • the arrangement of the first sealing surface 42 on the guide 40 enables full freedom of movement of all movable parts of the window and its suspension device and also the frame and the sash to be given relatively small cross-sectional dimensions.
  • the frame members of the frame 10, including the guide 40 and the sash members which together form the sash are each produced in pieces of extruded aluminium. It is also possible, however, to produce these components from other material, such as from different plastic materials. It is also possible to produce the frame and the sash from a number of different materials. For example, certain parts of the frame and of the sash may be produced in wood whereas other parts, for example a part of or the entire guide may be formed by separate extruded profiled elements or elements produced in some other way.
  • the present invention can also be applied with regard to windows that are rotatable about a vertical axis.
  • the pivot arms and the guide including the open channel may, instead, be provided on the horizontally extending upper and lower frame members of the frame.
  • the guide that includes the channel may be disposed in both side members and top and bottom members irrespective of whether the sash is arranged for rotation about a vertical or about a horizontal axis. This allows an "all round" seal to be obtained with the aid of two sealing strips provided externally of one another about the full periphery of the window.
  • the frames and sashes with which the suspension device is used may be constructed from a number of mutually different materials, such as from wood, metal, or plastic material, or from combinations of these and other materials.
  • the pivot arms may be affixed directly to the frame.
  • the number of pivot arms may also be varied and may comprise more or fewer than the three arms referred to in the above examples. If considered desirable, it is also possible to insert more pivot arms than the short arm into the open channel when the window is closed or moved to some other position. This enables this or these arms to be made wider and therewith stiffer than what would otherwise be possible.
