Le procédé selon l'invention comprend les étapes qui consistent : à imprimer une image couleur sur une surface de la carte d'identité au moyen d'une imprimante ; à balayer optiquement la surface de l'image imprimée, et à détecter des composants individuels de l'image imprimée dont les caractéristiques chromatiques diffèrent les unes des autres, à l'aide d'une unité de détection et d'évaluation ; à calculer des coordonnées des lignes limite qui sont disposées entre lesdits composants détectés, et qui représentent les contours des composants, à l'aide d'une unité de calcul, et ; à chauffer linéairement le matériau du substrat de carte, en dessous de la surface d'une couche de surface du substrat de carte, le long des lignes limite, par déplacement d'un laser le long des plans de surface du substrat de carte au moyen des coordonnées calculées. Cette invention concerne en outre une carte d'identité pourvue d'une image couleur.
