Abstract
This invention relates to a washer/dryer comprising a drum (3) usable volume of which is increased by reducing the distance between the tub (2) and the drum (3). The drum comprises a seam (6) formed by bending the overlapping edges of the drum body (4) and the two circular lids (5, 50) exterior to the volume formed by the lids and the body, projecting from the outer surface of the body towards the tub, being in the form of a protrusion having a space underneath and bent towards this space, towards the central axis of the body or towards the lid.
Description
Description A WASHER/DRYER
[1] This invention relates to a washer/dryer comprising a drum.
[2] As it is known, in washer/dryers, laundry to be washed and/or dried are loaded into a perforated drum. This drum performs washing, drying and spinning processes by being driven by a motor.
[3] In the current state-of-the-art, to manufacture these drums (T), first the body (G) is formed by bending a rectangular metal sheet into a cylindrical form and fastening together the edges that are parallel to the rotational axis of the drum by bending them into a hooklike form. Then, circular metal plates forming the back and front lids (P) are mounted to the body (G). A circular seam (S) is formed by bending the overlapping edges of the back and front lids (P) and the body (G) into a hooklike form. The seam (S) is formed by placing the lid (P) inside the body (G) at a small distance from the front edge of the body (G) and first folding the edge of the lid (P) so that the folded part of the lid (P) becomes parallel to the interior surface of the body (G), then folding it upwards so that it projects out of the body (G) and then folding it inwards outside the body (G). For this reason, the seam (S) forms a protrusion having a certain height (hi) on the body (G). As the drum (T) oscillates and vibrates during its rotation inside the tub (K), there has to be a certain distance (h2) between the drum (T) and the tub (K). Due to the height (hi) of the protrusion formed by the seam (S) on the body (G), this distance (h2) is calculated with reference to the surface of the seam (S) but not to the surface of the body (G). Thus, the distance (til) between the drum (T) and the tub (K) increases (hl+h2). This prevents the volume of the drum (K) from being increased.
[4] The aim of the present invention is the realization of a drum the usable volume of which is increased by decreasing the distance between the drum and the tub.
[5] The washer/dryer realized in order to fulfill the objectives of the present invention is explicated in the attached claims.
[6] In the said washer/dryer, the seams of the drum fastening together the body and the lids are bent towards the central axis of the drum. Thus, the seam which is bent at a certain angle forms a truncated cone. The height of the protrusion formed on the body by the seam which is bent towards the front surface of the front lid is reduced.
[7] In one embodiment of the present invention, the seam is bent so that it is placed totally in front of the lid. In this embodiment, the seam does not form a protrusion on the body at all.
[8] In another embodiment of the present invention, there is a certain distance between the seam and the point where the bending starts. Thus, even if the seam is bent at a small angle, it does not form a protrusion on the body.
[9] In an alternative embodiment of the present invention, only the seam fastening together the body and the front lid is bent. Since the attachment of the drum to the washer/dryer is made via the back lid, the amplitude of the oscillations is greater around the front lid. Bending the seams on the back lid provides a considerable gain in volume.
[10] In another embodiment of the present invention, both of the seams fastening together the body and the front and back lids are bent.
[11] The washer dryer realized in order to fulfill the objectives of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
[12] Figure 1 - is the detail cross-sectional view of the seam of the drum in a washer/ dryer of the prior art.
[13] Figure 2 - is a schematic view of a washer/dryer.
[14] Figure 3 - is a cross-sectional view of the detail A of the drum.
[15] Figure 4 - is a cross-sectional view of the detail B of the drum.
[16] Elements shown in figures are numbered as follows:
[17] 1. Washer/dryer
[18] 2. Tub
[19] 3. Drum
[20] 4. Body
[21] 5. , 50. Lid
[22] 6. Seam
[23] The washer/dryer (1) of the present invention comprises a tub (2) and a drum (3) placed inside this tub (2).
[24] The drum (3) comprises,
[25] - a cylindrical body (4)
[26] - two circular lids (5, 50) mounted on the body (4), forming the front and back surfaces.
[27] - a seam (6) formed by bending the overlapping edges of the body (4) and the lids
(5, 50) (Figure 2)
[28] The seam (6) forms a protrusion having a space underneath, projecting from the outer surface of the body (4) towards the tub (2). By applying a force on the seam (6), it is bent towards this space beneath, namely towards the axis (X) of the body or onto the lid (5, 50). The bending process is performed throughout the circular path connecting the body (4) and the lid (5, 50) (Figure 3).
[29] In the present embodiment, by bending the seam (6), the height of the projection formed by the seam (6) out of the body (4) is reduced and the distance between the seam (6) and the tub (2) is increased. Thus, the distance required between the drum (3) and the tub (2) can be reduced. Although the protrusion formed by the seam (6) on the
body (4) is not so high, bending the seam (6) saves a considerable cylindrical volume around the drum (3). This volume may be used to reduce the volumes of the drum (3) and the tub (2) simultaneously or to increase the volume of the drum (3) keeping the volume of the tub (2) unchanged. The bent seam (6) also provides for the structural reinforcement on the drum (3).
[30] In another embodiment of the present invention, there is a certain distance (m) between the point where the sheets of the lid (5, 50) and the body (4) overlap to form the drum (3) and the seam (6). Along this distance (m), there are only two layers of metal sheets forming the body (4) and the lid (5, 50). The bending process is started not right from the edge of the seam (6) but from a point within this distance (m). Thus, bending the seam (6) becomes easier and the seam is prevented from forming a protrusion on the body (4) (Figure 3).
[31] In another embodiment of the present invention, only the seam (6) between the front lid (5) and the body (4) is bent.
[32] In another embodiment of the present invention, both of the seams (6) between the front and back lids (5, 50) and the body (4) are bent.
[33] In yet another embodiment of the present invention, the drum (3) comprises notches
(not shown in figures) formed prior to the bending process providing for the easy bending of the seam (6) and preventing possible deformations on the plates that may occur during the bending process.
[34] In yet another embodiment of the present invention, the seam (6) between the lid (5,
50) and the body (4) is formed by being rolled inwards instead of being rolled outwards and on the outer side of the lid (5), it projects from the inner surface of the sheet forming the body (4) towards the center of the body (Figure 4). Thus, the seam (6) does not form a protrusion that creates a dead volume on the body (4).
[35] In yet another embodiment of the present invention, the washer dryer (1) comprises a tub (2) having seams (6) formed by bending the plates forming its side, front and back walls. These seams are bent so that they do not form a protrusion on side walls.
[36] By way of the washer/dryer (1) of the present invention, the outer surface of the body (4) is flattened. Thus, the distance between the drum (3) and the tub (2) is reduced and it is enabled to increase the volume of the drum (3) without changing the volume of the tub (2).
