Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to a walking device for assisting handicapped persons or patients during rehabilitation and of the type as described in the preamble of claim 1.
- Walking devices of this type are known in many embodiments for use by way of example for assisting handicapped persons or patients during rehabilitation to raise themselves from a seated position on the bed side to a standing position and further on during walking.
- However, another group of persons may be assisted by a walking device according to the invention, namely persons or patient during rehabilitation suffering from temporally diseases which influences their ability of balance.
- It is the purpose of the present invention to provide a new and improved walking device of the introductory described type, and which by means of simple technical provision makes it possible to obtain a considerably improvement of the use situation of the present walking device.
- The walking device according to the invention is characterized in that said horizontal side support panels being connected with said transverse carrying beam by means of beam parts being telescopic connected with opposite end parts of said transverse beam so that the effective width of said basic supporting part may be adjusted.
- By means of simple technical provisions is hereby obtained a new and considerably improved walking device where the effective contact area of the basic supporting part may easily be improved by increasing the total width thereof.
- Appropriately, the walking device according to the invention may be such provided that the width adjustment of said basic supporting part is of considerable range in the order of about 150 mm by way of example from a total width of 700 mm to 850 mm.
- Furthermore, the walking device according to the invention may advantageously be such provided that the height adjustment of said central pole or upright is of considerable range in the order of about 420 mm by way of example from a total height of 885 mm to 1305 mm.
- Preferably, the walking device according to the invention is such provided that also the mutual position of said arm rest members may be adjusted in a considerable range in the order of about 235 mm by way of example from a total width of 760 mm to 525 mm.
- In order to allow the walking device according to the invention to be fully optimized also the angular positions of said handles may be adjusted in a vertical plane in a considerable range in the order of about 120°.
- The walking device according to the invention may advantageously be such provided that said brake handle is operatively connected with braking systems at both rear driving wheels by means of one common cable which at the bottom of said central pole or upright is connected with two braking cables for the brake system of each rear driving wheels.
- In order to make the walking device according to the invention more secure to use it may preferably be such provided that said braking systems comprises braking means for braking of the rotation of the driving wheels as well as braking means for braking or preventing the pivot of the driving wheels.
- Appropriately, the walking device according to the invention is furthermore such provided that said braking means for braking of the rotation of the driving wheels comprises an activation pin the upper end of which being connected to a central part of a spring loaded activation plate member while the opposite lower end of said activation pin is connected to a brake-block engaging the outside surface of the wheel rubber tire, as the activation pin is located inside a hollow pivot shaft for the rear driving wheels.
- In order to improve safe function of the braking system by the walking device according to the invention, said braking means for braking of the pivot of the pivot shaft for the driving wheels comprises two activation pins the upper ends of which are connected to opposite ends of said spring loaded activation plate member, while the opposite lower ends of said activation pins are connected to opposite ends of a lower braking plate provided with a central hole, which at a rear arched part is provided with teeth, as said braking plate is adapted to - when said rear arched part thereof is displaced downwards - engage with a toothed dish member secured to the pivot shaft for the driving wheels so that the pivot of the driving wheel is prevented just after said brake-block has brakes the rotation of the driving wheel.
- For the user of the walking device according to the invention it is important that the braking system is correct adjusted so that the function of the combined braking system for both the rotation and the pivot of the rear driving wheels operated in the described order, so that the rotation of the driving wheels is braked before the pivot of the pivot shaft are prevented by engagement between the lower braking plate and the toothed dish member.

- The
walking device 2 shown in the drawing comprises a basic supportingpart 4 provided with a transverse, horizontal carryingbeam 6 connected with horizontalside support panels 8, which at opposite end being provided with pivotally driving wheels, of which the rear driving wheels are designated 10, while the front driving wheels are designated 12. - Said carrying
beam 6 supports a central height adjustable pole or telescopic upright 14 comprising a not shown internal gas-spring cylinder, anupper part 16 of said telescopic pole or upright 14 is provided witharm rest members 18, handles 20 and abrake handle 22 for activation of braking systems for at least therear driving wheels 10. At the top end of saidupper part 16 of the pole orupright 14 is located anactivation handle 24 for said gas-spring cylinder. - On the front side of the pole or
upright 14 are mounted carryingmountings 26 for a casket for bottles or similar items the user need to bring along. - Fig. 5 shows by way of example the height adjustment range of the
arm rest member 18 from a lowermost position with a total height of 885 mm to a height position of 1305 mm. - Fig. 6 shows by way of example the width adjustment range of the
side support panels 8 from a minimum width of 700 mm to a maximum width of 850 mm. - Fig. 7 shows by way of example the width adjustment of the
arm rest members 18 from a minimum outer width of 525 to a maximum outer width of 760 mm. The fixation of the swingablearm rest members 18 is carried out by means of lower finger screws 19. - Fig. 8 shows by way of example the angular adjustment of the
handles 20 in the range I the order of about 120°. The fixation of thehandles 20 in the correct or wanted position is carried out by mean of finger screws 21 facing forwards. - Figs. 9A and 9B show the
handle 20 and the brake handle 22 in more details, while Figs. 10A and 10B show how asingle braking cable 28 from the braking handle 22 at the lowermost part of the pole orupright 14 by a connectingblock unit 30 is joint with twobraking cables 32 leading to a braking system 34 (Fig. 13) of each of therear driving wheels 10 so that both brakingsystems 34 of bothrear driving wheels 10 are operated simultaneously by means of thecommon braking handle 22. - The
braking system 34 is described in more details with reference to Figs. 11-13. In Fig. 11 is shown an exploded view where the respective parts of thebraking system 34 are shown in order of the mounting thereof. - In the sectional view of Fig. 13 one of the
braking cables 32 from the connectingblock unit 30 inters abraking house 36 for arear driving wheel 10 from theside panel 8. As mentioned above thebraking systems 34 comprise braking means for braking of the rotation of therear driving wheels 10 as well as braking means for simultaneously braking or preventing the pivot of therear driving wheels 10. - The
braking system 34 comprises anactivation pin 38, theupper end part 39 of which is connected to a central part of a spring loaded rocking activation plate member 40, while an oppositelower end part 41 of saidactivation pin 38 is connected to a brake-block 42 engaging the outside surface 44 of therubber tire 46 of therear wheel 10. Theactivation pin 38 is located inside ahollow pivot shaft 48 of therear driving wheel 10. - Furthermore the
braking system 34 comprises twoactivation pins opposite ends parts 54, 56 of said activation plate member 40, while oppositelower end parts opposite end parts lower braking plate 66. This is provided with a central hole or bore 68, which at a rear arched part 70 is provided with teeth 72. Theactivation pin 50 is spring loaded by means of aspring 51 against activation plate member 40, so that said arched part 70 is lifted upwards, when the brake system is not operated. - By activation the
brake system 34 the rear arched part 70 of saidlower braking plate 66 will against the spring loading by thespring 51 be displaced downwards so that said teeth 72 engage with atoothed dish member 74 secured to thepivot shaft 48 for therear driving wheel 10, so that the pivot thereof is braked or prevented just after said brake-block 42 has braked the rotation of thedriving wheel 10. - For the user of the
walking device 2 it is important that thebraking system 34 is correct adjusted so that the function of the combinedbraking system 34 for both the rotation and the pivot of therear driving wheel 10 operated in the described order, so that the rotation of thedriving wheel 10 is braked before the pivot of thepivot shaft 48 are prevented by engagement between thelower braking plate 66 and thetoothed dish member 74.
Claims (9)
- A walking device (2) for assisting handicapped persons or patients during rehabilitation and comprising a basic supporting part (4) provided with a transverse, horizontal carrying beam, connected with horizontal side support panels provided with pivotally driving wheels at opposite ends, said carrying beam supports a central height adjustable pole or telescopic upright comprising an internal gas-spring cylinder, an upper end part of said pole or upright being provided with arm rest members, handles and a brake handle for activating braking system for at least some of said driving wheels and activation handle means for said gas-spring cylinder, characterized in that said horizontal side support panels being connected with said transverse carrying beam by means of beam parts being telescopic connected with opposite end parts of said transverse beam so that the effective width of said basic supporting part may be adjusted.
- A walking device according to claim 1, characterized in that the width adjustment of said basic supporting part is of considerable range in the order of about 150 mm by way of example from a total width of 700 mm to 850 mm.
- A walking device according to claim 1, characterized in that the height adjustment of said central pole or upright is of considerable range in the order of about 420 mm by way of example from a total height of 885 mm to 1305 mm.
- A walking device according to claim 1, characterized in that also the mutual position of said arm rest members may be adjusted in a considerable range in the order of about 235 mm by way of example from a total width of 760 mm to 525 mm.
- A walking device according to claim 1, characterized in that also the angular positions of said handles may be adjusted in a vertical plane in a considerable range in the order of about 120°.
- A walking device according to claim 1, characterized in that said brake handle is operatively connected with braking systems at both rear driving wheels by means of one common cable which at the bottom of said central pole or upright is connected with two braking cables for the brake system of each rear driving wheels.
- A walking device according to claim 1, characterized in that said braking systems comprises braking means for braking of the rotation of the driving wheels as well as braking means for braking or preventing the pivot of the driving wheels (10).
- A walking device (2) according to claims 1 and 7, characterized in that said braking means for braking of the rotation of the driving wheels (10) comprises an activation pin (38) the upper end part (39) of which being connected to a central part of a spring loaded activation plate member (40) while the opposite lower end part (41) of said activation pin (38) is connected to a brake-block (42) engaging the outside surface (44) of a wheel rubber tire (46), as the activation pin (38) is located inside a hollow pivot shaft (48) for the rear driving wheels (10).
- A walking device according to claims 1, 7 and 8, characterized in that said braking means for braking of the pivot of the pivot shaft (48) for the driving wheels (10) comprises two activation pins (50, 52) the upper end parts (54, 56) of which are connected to opposite end parts (58, 60) of said spring loaded activation plate member (40), while opposite lower end parts of said activation pins are connected to opposite end parts of a lower braking plate (66) provided with a central hole (68), which at a rear arched part (70) is provided with teeth (72), as said braking plate (66) is adapted to - when said rear arched part (70) thereof is displaced downwards - engage with a toothed dish member (74) secured to the pivot shaft (48) for the driving wheels (10) so that the pivot of the driving wheel (10) is prevented just after said brake-block (42) has brakes the rotation of the driving wheel (10).
