Definitions
- the present invention relates to a support device intended to make transport of bags provided with handles, in particular of shopping bags, easier, as specified in the preamble of claim 1.
- Plastic bags provided with handles are commonly used for transport of shopping articles or objects of other kind. Those bags have a reduced thickness and a high mechanical strength. Accordingly, when bags of this kind are carried by the hands of a person and contain a load of a considerable amount, the strips constituting the handles of the bags form longitudinal pleats which reduce the support surface of the handles and thus cause a remarkable increase in the pressure applied onto the fingers, with resulting risk of wounds.
- support devices which are made of a rigid material, for example of metal, and have a channel-like configuration with a U-shaped cross-section which define a cavity for receiving the handles of the bag.
- the handles of the bag are inserted from above into the receiving cavity of the device and the device is brought with its lower surface in abutment against the fingers of the user. Since a wide and constant support surface is available independently of the amount of the load carried in the bag, an excessive increase in the pressure on the fingers of the user and the resulting risk of wounds are avoided.
- a support device is generally indicated 10 and is preferably made as a single piece of rigid material, which may be a metal (for example steel) or a plastic material.
- the device 10 forms a channel-like support portion 12 defining a cavity 14 for receiving the handles (not shown) of a bag which is open on one side.
- the channel-like support portion 12 has a U-shaped cross-section.
- the length of the support portion 12 is greater than the width of the four index, middle, ring and little fingers of an average-size person, so as to avoid that in the use condition the handles of the bag may touch and wound the fingers of the user.
- the width and the height of the receiving cavity 14 are chosen such that they ensure at the same time that the handles of the bag can be retained within the cavity and that the user can comfortably hold the device 10 in his hand with the support portion 12 thereof resting on the four fingers indicated above.
- the device in order to allow the user to securely hold the support device 10 in his hands, the device further forms a retaining portion 16 which projects from an end of the support portion 12 assuming a loop-like configuration which closes over the outer surface of the bottom wall of the support portion 12.
- the loop-like shape of the retaining portion 16 allows the user to insert the index finger of his hand into it and therefore enables a more secure gripping of the device by the user.

Abstract
Description
- In order to avoid such a shortcoming, several arrangements of support devices have been conceived which are made of a rigid material, for example of metal, and have a channel-like configuration with a U-shaped cross-section which define a cavity for receiving the handles of the bag. The handles of the bag are inserted from above into the receiving cavity of the device and the device is brought with its lower surface in abutment against the fingers of the user. Since a wide and constant support surface is available independently of the amount of the load carried in the bag, an excessive increase in the pressure on the fingers of the user and the resulting risk of wounds are avoided.
- However, none of the known transport devices is provided with measures for improving the retention of the device in the hand of the user.
- It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a support device of the above-indicated type which can be securely held in the hand of the user.
- This and other objects are fully achieved according to the invention by virtue of a support device having the characteristics defined in the characterizing portion of claim 1.
- The characteristics and the advantages of the invention will result from the following detailed description, given purely by way of non-limiting example with reference to the appended drawings, in which:
- Figure 1 is a side elevation view of a support device according to a preferred embodiment of the invention; and
- Figures 2 and 3 are perspective views from below and from above, respectively, of the support device of Figure 1.
- With reference to the figures, a support device according to the invention is generally indicated 10 and is preferably made as a single piece of rigid material, which may be a metal (for example steel) or a plastic material. The
device 10 forms a channel-like support portion 12 defining acavity 14 for receiving the handles (not shown) of a bag which is open on one side. Preferably, the channel-like support portion 12 has a U-shaped cross-section. Advantageously, the length of thesupport portion 12 is greater than the width of the four index, middle, ring and little fingers of an average-size person, so as to avoid that in the use condition the handles of the bag may touch and wound the fingers of the user. The width and the height of thereceiving cavity 14 are chosen such that they ensure at the same time that the handles of the bag can be retained within the cavity and that the user can comfortably hold thedevice 10 in his hand with thesupport portion 12 thereof resting on the four fingers indicated above. - According to the invention, in order to allow the user to securely hold the
support device 10 in his hands, the device further forms aretaining portion 16 which projects from an end of thesupport portion 12 assuming a loop-like configuration which closes over the outer surface of the bottom wall of thesupport portion 12. The loop-like shape of theretaining portion 16 allows the user to insert the index finger of his hand into it and therefore enables a more secure gripping of the device by the user. - Naturally, the principle of the invention remaining unchanged, the embodiments and constructional details may vary widely with respect to those described and illustrated purely by way of non-limiting example.
Claims (6)
- Support device (10) for a bag provided with handles, in particular for a shopping bag, the device comprising a channel-like support portion (12) which defines an open cavity (14) for receiving the handles of the bag,
characterized in that it further comprises a retaining portion (16) having a loop-like configuration so as to make it possible for a user to insert a finger into it while holding the support device (10) in his hands. - Device according to claim 1, wherein the retaining portion (16) projects from an end of the support portion (12) and closes over the outer surface of a bottom wall of the support portion (12).
- Device according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the support portion (12) and the retaining portion (16) are made as a single piece.
- Device according to claim 3, wherein the support portion (12) and the retaining portion (16) are made of metal.
- Device according to claim 3, wherein the support portion (12) and the retaining portion (16) are made of plastics.
- Device according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the receiving cavity (14) of the support portion (12) has a U-shaped cross-section.
