  • Fig. 7 is a simplified pictorial, cutaway illustration of the mortise lock of Fig. 1 , wherein the cylinder lock has been rotated another revolution to actuate the bolt thrower via the cylinder-lock-bolt-thrower linkage member.
  • Fig.l illustrates a mortise lock 10, constructed and operative in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
  • Mortise lock 10 may include a case 12 which houses a locking mechanism actuable by a key-operated lock cylinder 14, or by a handle (not shown) which engages a (typically, although not necessarily, square) spindle hole 16 of a bolt follower 18.
  • Mortise lock 10 is preferably a multiple bolt lock, i.e., it includes a plurality of locking bolts and/or latches. Although any number of locking bolts or latches may be employed in the present invention, in the illustrated embodiment mortise lock 10 includes a latch bolt 20 and a rectangular or dead bolt 22 configured to protrude from a faceplate 24. As will be described hereinbelow, dead bolt 22 serves as a locking linking element, and will thus be alternatively referred to as locking linking element 22.
  • the illustrated embodiment includes two locking bolts 26 and 28 (also referred to as locking elements) arranged to move vertically in the sense of an upright door.
  • the locking or latch bolts 20, 22, 26 and 28 can engage a variety of locking hardware installed in a door and which are used to lock the door, such hardware being very well known in the art, so no further description is necessary for the skilled artisan.
  • the cam 42 strikes the bottom of clutch plate 34 and moves the clutch plate upwards (in the sense of Fig. 1), overcoming the force of biasing device 40, thereby moving lug 32 out of the way of locking linking element 22. Further rotation of the tumbler moves cam 42 into engagement with a recess 44 formed in locking linking element 22 and permits moving locking linking element 22 into case 12 into an unlocked orientation.
  • Locking bolts 26 and 28 may be linked to locking linking element 22, such as by pins 46 that are received in separate channels 48 formed in locking linking element 22.
  • locking linking element 22 has a first side 22 A facing into a room and a second side 22B facing out of a room.
  • Channels 48 at least partially overlap each other and are formed on the first and second sides 22 A and 22B. In this manner, the channels 48 do not interfere with each other and can each actuate its own locking bolt (26 or 28), thereby saving space.
  • each channel 48 may be blind, i.e., it does not pass through- to the other side of locking linking element 22.
  • locking linking element 22 shown in Figs. 2 and 3 comprises a plurality of plates fastened together such as by rivets or welding or any other suitable method.
  • the invention is not limited to this construction and locking linking element 22 may be constructed from one piece (by machining, forging, casting, or powder metallurgy, for example).
  • locking linking element 22 gradually moves into case 12 into the unlocked orientation (to the right in the sense of Fig. 1), locking bolts 26 and 28 are gradually moved into case 12 by the action of pins 46 moving in channels 48.
  • the locking linking element 22 may be moved into case 12 by one rotation of the cylinder lock 14 or by more than one rotation of the cylinder lock 14. As seen in Figs.
  • locking linking element 22 may be provided with more than one recess 44 so that at each rotation of the cylinder lock 14, the cam 42 engages another recess 44 to gradually move the locking linking element 22 more into case 12.
  • locking linking element 22 may be provided with recesses 50 to sequentially engage lug 32 at each rotation of cylinder lock 14 to arrest movement of locking linking element 22.
  • Locking linking element 22 may be constrained to move horizontally in the sense of Fig. 1 by a pin 52 that is received in a groove 54 formed in locking linking element 22.
  • locking linking element 22 may be provided with anti-tampering elements 56, such as but not limited to, hardened pins that fit into recesses or holes 58 formed in locking linking element 22.
  • the anti-tampering elements 56 make it difficult to saw or otherwise attempt to tamper with locking linking element 22 to gain unauthorized entry.
  • the multiple plate construction of locking linking element 22 makes forming recesses or holes 58 and assembling anti-tampering elements 56 very easy and reduces manufacturing and assembly costs.
  • locking linking element 22 has a first portion 23 arranged for protruding out of lock case 12 and a second portion 25 that does not protrude out of lock case 12.
  • first portion 23 is not more than twice as thick as the second portion 25.
  • the first portion 23 may be approximately as thick as the second portion 25. This may substantially increase the resistance of locking linking element 22 to tampering.
  • Mortise lock 10 may include a cylinder-lock-bolt-thrower linkage member 60, which may be pivotally mounted about a pivot 62 and constrained in its pivotal motion by a biasing device 64 (e.g., a coil spring).
  • the cylinder-lock-bolt-thrower linkage member 60 may be constrained in linear motion by a pin 66 that is received in a slot 68 formed in cylinder-lock-bolt-thrower linkage member 60.
  • cylinder-lock-bolt-thrower linkage member 60 is arranged for linear and rotational movement.
  • a lug 70 at the lower end of cylinder-lock-bolt-thrower linkage member 60 may engage cam 42 (as will be described hereinbelow).
  • Cylinder lock 14 has been further rotated to further retract locking element 26, such that locking element 26 has contacted, and started to pivot, cylinder-lock-bolt-thrower linkage member 60.
  • Cylinder lock 14 has been even further rotated to even further retract locking element 26, such that locking element 26 has pivoted the cylinder-lock-bolt-thrower linkage member 60 into a position for actuating bolt thrower 18. In this position, cylinder-lock-bolt-thrower linkage member 60 has been straightened to be generally parallel to locking element 26.
  • Cylinder lock 14 has been rotated another revolution to actuate the bolt thrower 18 via the cylinder-lock-bolt-thrower linkage member 60.
  • cam 42 strikes lug 70, thereby pushing cylinder-lock-bolt-thrower linkage member 60 against a strike plate 72 of bolt thrower 18. This pivots bolt thrower 18 and retracts latch bolt 20 into case 12.
