Description
- The present invention relates to post drivers and in particular to post drivers which are used by farmers to drive posts into the ground.
- To be effective, such post drivers must be easily attachable to farm vehicles, such as tractors and must also, in use, be able to accommodate uneven terrain and be able to drive posts into hill sides and inclines. One particularly useful design for a post driver which provides these requirements is that described in
UK Patent Publication No. 2420367 (Brennan et al. - A further important requirement is that a post, having been driven into the ground, is appropriately aligned in the ground. However, it is common for stones, rocks, tree roots and the like to obstruct the path of a post as it is being driven into the ground and this typically causes the post, on hitting the obstruction, to move off its intended path and become misaligned in the ground. In such situations it is necessary for operators to manually correct the alignment of the post in the ground. This is an extremely time consuming process requiring the labour of typically two or more persons. Depending on the extent of the misalignment it may, in certain circumstances, be necessary for operators to completely remove the post from the ground and re-drive the post into the ground. Again, it will be appreciated that this is also very time consuming.
- Also, before a post is driven into the ground it is necessary for the mast of the post driver to be aligned to the vertical in order that the post being driven may be positioned vertically in the ground. However, as such post drivers are often used on uneven terrain, including hill sides and inclines, it is usually necessary for the mast to be aligned to the vertical prior to the post being driven into the ground.
- Presently, it is necessary for operators to manually align the mast by positioning handheld levels on or adjacent the mast to establish whether the mast is vertical. The operators are then required to actuate hand held levers to operate the hydraulics associated with the post driver in order to gradually adjust the lateral (backward and forward) and transverse (sideways) tilt of the mast in order to get it vertically aligned. This will often necessitate the operator repositioning or referring back to the hand held levels a number of times during the gradual adjustment until the mast is fully vertical. It will be appreciated that this is not alone an extremely time consuming process, but that the manual adjustment of heavy machinery from outside the main cab of the tractor and in close proximity to moving parts also presents numerous dangers. Indeed, accidents involving the use and adjustment of the three-point hitch of tractors from outside the main cab of a tractor are well known.
- It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a post holder for a post driver of the type described which goes at least someway toward overcoming the above problems and/or which will provide the public with a useful choice.
- It is acknowledged that the term 'comprise' may, under varying jurisdictions be provided with either an exclusive or inclusive meaning. For the purpose of this specification, and unless otherwise noted explicitly, the term comprise shall have an inclusive meaning - i.e. that it may be taken to mean an inclusion of not only the listed components it directly references, but also other non-specified components. Accordingly, the term 'comprise' is to be attributed with as broader interpretation as possible within any given jurisdiction and this rationale should also be used when the terms 'comprised' and/or 'comprising' are used.
- Further aspects of the present invention will become apparent form the ensuing description which is given by way of example only.
- According to the invention, there is provided a post driver including:
- a support frame,
- a post holder movable on the support frame between a raised position and a lowered position;
- means for urging the post holder downwardly on the support frame for driving a post held therewith into the ground;
- Such an arrangement is particularly useful as it provides a means by which the alignment of a post may be corrected once it has been driven into the ground. The use of the alignment means will be advantageous as the alignment of the post can be restored without manual intervention by operators. It will be appreciated that this will provide a significant time saving in terms of labour overheads as additional operators will not be required for this heretobefore manual post alignment.

ram 17 in turn causes thesocket 15 to rotate relative to theflat plate 13, causing apost 11 held in thesocket 15 to also rotate about a vertical longitudinal axis X of thepost 11 and thus have its alignment in the ground corrected as required. - It will also be noted that the provision of the alignment means in conjunction with the lifting ram will ensure that the vertical component of the post's position can also be aligned as necessary.
- Referring to Figs. 9 to 14, there is provided an apparatus, indicated generally by the
reference numeral 31 for aligning the mast, indicated generally by thereference numeral 32, of a post driver, indicated generally by thereference numeral 33. As shown, thepost driver 33 comprises asupport frame 34 havingground engaging legs 35 and three-point linkage mounting means, indicated generally by thereference numeral 36 is provided for securing thesupport frame 34 to the three-point linkage of a tractor (not shown). - The
mast 32 comprises amain mast 46, which is mounted pivotally by apivot bracket 44 on thesupport frame 34, and asupport mast 47 slidably mounted on themain mast 46. - A
pulley 48 is mounted adjacent the upper free end of thesupport mast 47 and apile driving hammer 49 is slidably mounted on ahammer guide rail 50 on thesupport mast 47. Aflexible connector 51 such as a rope or cable is connected to themain mast 46 and thehammer 49 via thepulley 48. A lifting ram (not shown) is connected between thesupport mast 47 and themain mast 46 for raising thesupport mast 47 up themain mast 46. Apost holder 52 is slidably mounted on themain mast 46 below thepile driving hammer 49. - In the instance shown, the
support frame 34 is a two-part support frame having amain support frame 37 which carries the three-point linkage mounting means comprising of atop link ram 38 and twoconnectors 39 for connection to the three-point linkage of the tractor. Themain support frame 37 is connected to a furthermast support frame 40 by a pair of spaced-aparttelescopic cross members 41, movable by rams 42 (Fig. 10). Themast support frame 40 has a telescopictop bar 43, again operated by a further ram (not shown). Themast 32 is mounted on thetop bar 43 by apivot bracket 44 and atilt ram 45 is connected between themast 32 and thesupport frame 34. Acounterweight 46 is provided on thetop bar 43. Themain support frame 37 is thus connected to mounting arms of the three-point linkage and themast support frame 40, which is slidable laterally with respect to the three-point linkage, on themain support frame 37. Themast support frame 40 is thus slidable towards and away from the three-point linkage mounting arms. - Also shown is plumb sensing means, indicated generally by the
reference numeral 53, for sensing when themast 32 is not vertically aligned. In the instance shown, the sensing means 53 comprises one ormore sensors 54 for determining whether or not themast 32 is aligned to the vertical. In the instance shown, there is asensor 54 positioned fast to thepivot bracket 44 and one is also positioned adjacent one of theconnectors 39 on thesupport frame 34. However, it will be appreciated that thesensors 54 can equally well be positioned at different locations on thepost driver 33. For example, thesensor 54 positioned on thesupport frame 34 will in most circumstances be positioned on the back of themast 32 very close to thesensor 54 on thepivot bracket 44. - The sensing means 53, or more specifically, the
sensors 54 are connected to control means, indicated by the reference numeral 60, for operating thetilt ram 45 and the three-point linkage mounting means to align themast 32 to the vertical. In particular, thetilt ram 45 is operable to control the lateral tilt of themast 32, that is the back and forth movement of themast 32, and the three-point linkagetop link ram 38 is operable to control the transverse tilt, that is the sideways movement of themast 32. It will thus be appreciated that the control means 60 operates thetilt ram 45 and the three-point linkagetop link ram 38 in response to mast tilt signals provided by thesensors 54. In this way, themast 32 can be automatically aligned when it is not vertical. A control panel or console (not shown) is also provided so that all operators need to do is push a button to activate theapparatus 31 so that the sensing means 53 will determine whether themast 32 is vertical and then transmit the appropriate signals to align themast 32 if it is unaligned. It will be appreciated, in this embodiment, that themain mast 32 can be tilted in the direction of the arrow A by thetilt ram 45. Themain mast 32 can also be moved towards and away from the three-point linkage in the direction of the arrow B by therams 42 and finally, it can be pivoted in the direction of the arrow C by the three-point linkagetop link ram 38. This allows for the post driver to be easily vertically aligned depending on the terrain. It will also be understood that thetilt ram 45 and the three-point linkage mounting means 36 are independently operable and adjustable by the control means 60. Actuation of therams mast 32 about mutually perpendicular axes. - With brief reference to Figs. 15 to 18, there is shown one configuration for a
sensor 54 able to be used in conjunction with the present invention. Thesensor 54 comprises apendulum 55 to determine whether themast 32 is vertical, thependulum 55 being pivotally attached to abacking plate 56 which is in turn secured to therespective part post driver 33. Thesensor 54 also includesbumper portions 57 to restrict movement of thependulum 55.Switches 58 are also shown, theswitches 58 being moved between on and off positions by movement of thependulum arm 59 in response to themast 32 being in an off vertical position. Thus, when themast 32 is not vertical thependulum arm 59 pivots to engage against one or other of the switches 58 (as shown in Fig. 18) to thereby send appropriate signals to solenoids (not shown) associated with thepost driver 33 to activate the post driver hydraulics (namely, rams 45 and 38) to align themast 32 so that it is parallel with thependulum 55 and therefore vertically aligned. - However, it will be appreciated that the
sensors 54 used may also be mercury tilt switches or electronic tilt switches as required or as desired. - Aspects of the present invention have been described by way of example only and it should be appreciated that additions and/or modifications may be made thereto without departing from the scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
