Description

DETERGENT DISPENSER FOR A DISHWASHER
The present invention relates to a detergent dispenser for a dishwasher comprising a box-like compartment for detergent in 5 powder-form or in the shape of .tablets, said compartment being closable by a lid adapted to be opened at a selectable time during a washing process .
Detergent dispensers for .full-size dishwashers normally have 10 a volume allowing for a dose of powder detergent of about 40 ml. Alternatively, the detergent dispenser can be used with detergent tablets of a standard dose shape. The full-size
• dishwasher normally allows for treating of dishware for about 12 - 14 person's.
15
There are also compact dishwashers on the market which allows for about half of the amount of dishware as compared to the
• amount allowed in a full-size dishwasher. Up to now detergent dispensers for use in compact dishwashers allow for an amount
20 of detergent powder of about 10 ml and does not allow- for the use of detergent tablets .
It has been found that when dosing more than about 10 ml of powder detergent of certain brands in. a compact dishwasher
25 there is a risk for damage to sealings provided in the liquid circulation pump and, in addition, unpleasant noise may occur. Overdosing may also 'result in waste of detergent. No such damage have been observed in connection with the use of detergent tablets even if such use involves overdosing to
30. some extent.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to modify a detergent dispenser normally used in a full-size dishwasher so that it could be used also in compact dishwashers, wherein .
a much smaller volume of detergent powder is allowed and at the same time also use of standard dose detergent' tablets.
The object has been achieved in a detergent dispenser which has obtained the characterizing features indicated in claim 1. Preferred embodiments have been included in the associated sub-claims .
The invention will now be described more in, detail in connection with a preferred embodiment and' with reference to the enclosed drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a dispenser according to the invention, and '
Fig. 2 shows a section along the line II-II in Fig. 1.
In the drawings a detergent dispenser 10 is shown comprising a main body 12 in which a compartment 14 for detergent is formed. A lid 16 is pivotably supported on the main body 12 by a hinge 18. The lid 16 can be moved between an open position and a closed position and in the latter position the. lid 16 covers the compartment 14 to prevent detergent from escaping until, allowed to at a selectable time during a wash process. A spring, not shown, biases the lid 16 to take its ' open position. A gasket 20 in the lid 16 acts to prevent water from entering the compartment 14. A turnably mounted locking member 21 cooperates with an edge on the lid 16 for keeping the lid in its closed position. The locking member 21 is released by electric means in a way known in the art and not described more in detail. The detergent dispenser 10 is intended to be used with either powder ' detergent or detergent tablets comprising pressed detergent powder. In a full-size dishwasher the - compartment 14 is designed for allowing for powder detergent of about 40 5. ml even if a recommended dose is about 20 ml. If this detergent dispenser should be used in a compact dishwasher of a size corresponding to 4-6 sets of table ware, for powder detergent of certain brands the detergent liquid concentration would be too high causing damage to sealings 0 provided in the circulation pump used to circulate wash liquid in a dishwasher treatment chamber. Accordingly, the volume of the compartment 14 has been made smaller so as to allow for a reduced amount of about 10 ml of powder detergent. This reduced amount normally gives the correct 5 liquid concentration in a compact dishwasher in which ' reduced amounts of water is used. With this reduced dose no damage' to sealings in the pump have been observed.
The compartment 14 has an upper rim 22 acting as a measure of 0 the reduced dose (about 10 ml) . In addition, in facilitating flush of detergent into said treatment chamber when the Hd 16 has opened, a bottom wall 24 of said compartment 14 is slanting. Normally the detergent dispenser is mounted on the inside of a door closing the treatment chamber of a 5 dishwasher. The mounting is such that when the- door is closed the lid 16 opens upwards. The bottom wall 24 of the compartment 14 is slanting in a direction into the treatment chamber. This is achieved by the bottom wall 24 having a greater depth at the side close to the lid hingelδ than at 0 the opposite 'side. This is shown in Fig. 2.
The length and width of the compartment 14 is designed to allow for use of standard dose detergent tablets . This tablet is to big to be contained in the compartment 14 as designed for a reduced dose (about 10 ml) of powder detergent and accordingly a corresponding cavity 26 is provided in the lid 16 to take up the part of the tablet protruding above the rim 22.
The detergent dispenser of the invention comprises a main body, which can be fixed to an inner wall of the treatment chamber of the dishwasher. The main body of the detergent dispenser may also be formed integrally with an inner wall of the treatment chamber. Preferably the detergent dispenser is arranged on the inner wall of the door of the treatment chamber. Still preferably, the door of ' the treatment chamber is movable around a horizontal axis at its lower end, such that the detergent dispenser is in an essentially horizontal loading orientation, when the door of the dishwasher is fully open, whereas the detergent dispenser is in an essentially vertical discharging orientation, when the door of the dishwasher is closed.
The main body of the detergent dispenser comprises said box- like compartment, that is suitable for taking up a detergent in a dosable form, e.g. in powder form, gel form, liquid form, or in the shape of a tablet. Herein a dosable detergent in powder form comprises any dry or humid detergent preparation 'such as a powder detergent of the prior art or a detergent in the form of granula or chips which may be larger than usual powder particles, wherein 'the powder detergent is of a particle nature, wherein the individual particles have a smaller size than the size of a standard dose detergent tablet. The volume of the box-like compartment is preferably adapted to take up a dose of powder, liquid or gel detergent, which is reduced as compared to a standard .dose. Preferably, -the' volume of the box-like compartment corresponds to the volume of said reduced dose of a dosable detergent (e.g. a powder, liquid or gel detergent) . Herein, a standard dose of a detergent, e.g. in the form of a powder, gel, liquid or in the shape of a tablet, is .preferably a standard dose for a full-size dishwasher. The volume of the pox-like compartment
'I preferably corresponds to a dose of a dosable detergent, e.g. a powder, liquid or gel detergent, which is suitable for a compact dishwasher which allows for treating of about half of the amount of dishware as compared to a full-size dishwasher. However, the volume of the box-like compartment may. also correspond to other favourable reduced doses of a dosable detergent as compared to a standard dose.
The box-like compartment preferably has said upper rim that indicates the volume of the' reduced dose of the dosable (e.g. powder, liquid or gel) detergent. Preferably the upper rim indicates said volume of the reduced dose in that it defines said volume. The upper rim preferably defines said volume in that an excess dose of a dosable detergent, such as a powder detergent, and in particular liquid or gel deteregnt, will flow over said upper rim and out of the box-like compartment of the detergent dispenser, when the box-like compartment is in an essentially horizontal -loading position. However, an excess dose of a powder detergent can generally more readily , accumulate to some elevation above said upper rim than an excess dose of a detergent in low-viscosity gel or liquid form before flowing over said upper rim, at least when said box-like compartment is in said essentially horizontal loading orientation.
The volume or shape of the box-like compartment of the detergent dispenser is such that it can take up only a part of a standard dose detergent tablet, which is placed into said box-like compartment. In particular the depth and/or the volume of the box-like compartment may be such that it can take up only a part of a detergent tablet. Preferably, only a first part of said tablet can be comprised within -the box- like compartment, ' whereas' a second part of the tablet projects above said upper rim and out of the box-like compartment. Preferably, when said box-like compartment is in an essentially horizontal loading orientation, only a lower part of -said tablet is comprised within the box-like compartment, whereas an upper part of the tablet projects above said upper rim. Preferably, a detergent tablet which can be taken up only in part by said box-like compartment has a shape, dimensions and/or a volume of a standard dose detergent tablet, which comprises a standard detergent dose of a detergent in the shape of' a tablet, in particular a standard dose of a detergent tablet for a full-size dishwasher.
The box-like compartment of the detergent dispenser is closable by a lid, which is slideably or preferably pivotally mounted to the detergent dispenser. The lid is. adapted to be opened at a suitable time during the washing process, and preferably the lid is adapted to be opened at a selectable time during the washing process . According to the present invention, the lid of- the 'detergent dispenser is adapted to be closable also when a detergent tablet is present in said box-like compartment, wherein an upper part of said tablet projects above said upper rim of the box-like compartment.
The lid of the detergent dispenser has a suitable shape for being tightly closable when said upper part of the detergent tablet projects above said upper rim. The lid may have any suitable shape that allows taking up the projecting part of the tablet 'when the lid is closed. Preferably, a cavity can be provided within the lid, wherein said cavity is adapted to take up said projecting part of the detergent tablet when' the lid is closed. If a powder' detergent or a highly viscous gel detergent is used, said cavity may also take up some excess dose of said detergent which accumulates to some elevation above said upper rim.
Preferably, a detergent tablet which can be used with the detergent dispenser of the invention comprises a detergent tablet which has a shape, dimensions and/or a volume of a standard dose detergent tablet for a full-size dishwasher.
Thus, the detergent dispenser of the present invention comprises a box-like compartment which has a volume that corresponds to a reduced volume of a dosable detergent, e.g. in powder, gel or liquid form, as compared to a standard dose, but. the detergent dispenser can advantageously • alternatively take up a detergent tablet having a standard size and/or a standard dose, because an upper part of the tablet projecting above the upper rim of the box-like compartment can be taken up ,by the suitably 'shaped lid of the detergent dispenser when the box-like compartment is tightly closed by said lid.
The lid is closably mounted to the detergent dispenser; preferably the lid is mounted by means of a hinge to the main body of detergent dispenser. The hinge can be arranged in any relative orientation to the box-like compartment, if such orientation of the hinge allows the detergent to fall out or to be washed out, preferably to fall out, of the detergent dispenser when the detergent dispenser is arranged in an essentially vertical discharging orientation, in particular when the dishwasher door is closed, and when the lid is opened during the dishwashing process^
5 The hinge of the lid can be arranged .above, below or on . either side of the 'detergent dispenser, and when the door of the treatment chamber of the dishwasher is closed, the lid may open upwardly, downwardly or to either side of the detergent dispenser, in order to allow the detergent to fall 1.0 out or to be washed out', preferably to freely fall out, of the detergent dispenser and into the treatment chamber of the dishwasher.
The detergent dispenser preferably comprises a bottom wall of 15 the box-like compartment which is slantingly oriented relative to the vertical axis, when the detergent dispenser is in an essentially vertical discharging orientation. The • slanting bottom wall facilitates the falling or sliding out of the detergent when the detergent dispenser is in said 20 discharging orientation and when the lid of the detergent dispenser is opened during the washing process .
In a preferred embodiment, the slanting bottom wall of the box-like compartment has a greater depth at its upper end
25 relative to the essentially vertical discharging orientation of the detergent dispenser. In addition or alternatively, the cavity in the lid has a greater depth at its lower end relative to the essentially vertical discharging orientation of the detergent dispenser. Mpst preferably, the depth of the
30 slanting bottom wall of the box-like compartment at its upper end and the depth of the cavity in the lid at its lower end in said discharging position of the detergent dispenser are adapted to enclose a detergent tablet in a slanting orientation of the tablet which facilitates the falling or sliding .out of the tablet down into the treatment chamber, when the lid is opened during the washing process .
