Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to shaving apparatus in general, and to shaving apparatus having a mechanism for providing a flowable shaving aid material in particular.
- Numerous attempts have been made to combine a razor assembly with a mechanism for dispensing shaving aid material Typically, the shaving apparatus will include a reservoir containing a shaving aid material and one or more passages connecting the reservoir to a point of discharge. The shaving aid material is picked up by the user at the point of discharge. The shaving aid material is typically forced from the reservoir by pressurized gas, or by mechanical arrangement that decreases the volume of the reservoir. One known razor is described in
WO-A-2004071260 . The razor comprising a razor body and a shaving cartridge containing one or more blades. Further the razor includes a reservoir for containing shaving aid material and a discharge nozzle extending outwardly from the razor body adjacent to the razor cartridge. An actuator is located on an outer surface of the razor body and is manually manipulable between a non-dispensing position and a dispensing position. When the actuator is moved to the dispensing position, a quantity of the shaving aid material is dispensed through the discharge nozzle. - In some instances, a valve mechanism is disposed within the shaving apparatus proximate the reservoir to prevent discharge of shaving aid material from the reservoir when the razor assembly is not in use. To be commercially successful, the valve mechanism of the shaving apparatus should be easy to operate. It should also be easily manufactured at a low cost. It should also be adaptable for use with a variety of different shaving aid materials.

FIGS. 1-9 , theshaving apparatus 10 includes arazor cartridge 12, ashaving aid dispenser 14, a reservoir 16 (seeFIG.3 ), and ahandle 18. - The
razor cartridge 12 includes one ormore razor blades 20 attached to a frame. Each razor blade has acutting edge 22. Therazor cartridge 12 can be fixedly or pivotally attached to thehandle 18. A variety of different razor cartridges can be used with thepresent shaving apparatus 10, including those that are intended to be disposable. The present apparatus is not, therefore, limited to any particular type ofrazor cartridge 12. - The
shaving aid dispenser 14 includes one or more selectivelyoperable valves 24. Thevalves 24 may be disposed within, or may partially or completely form, acontact panel 26 disposed adjacent the razor cartridge 12- Thecontact panel 26, which includes acontact surface 28, may be continuous around therazor cartridge 12. Thecontact surface 28 may be planar or may includeprotuberances 29. In some embodiments, thecontact panel 26 may be one or more sections that are disposed adjacent therazor cartridge 12; e.g., thecontact panel 26 shown inFIGS. 1 and 2 disposed forward of therazor cartridge 12. Other embodiments of thecontact panel 26 may be disposed aft of therazor cartridge 12, or on one or both sides of therazor cartridge 12, or some combination thereof. - Referring to
FIGS. 4-9 , each of thevalves 24 is selectively operable between an open position and a closed position. In the open position (e.g., seeFIG.7 ), apassage 30 is created for shaving aid material to flow through thevalve 24 under normal conditions. In the closed position (e.g., seeFIGS. 5 and 6 ), thepassage 30 is eliminated and consequently no appreciable amount of shaving aid material flows through thevalve 24 under normal conditions- In preferred embodiments, each of thevalves 24 include amale portion 32 and afemale portion 34 that mates with one another to form a seal when thevalve 24 is in a closed position. In the embodiments shown inFIGS. 4-8 , thefemale portion 34 of eachvalve 24 is disposed within thecontact panel 26. In the embodiment shown inFIG.9 , themale portion 32 of eachvalve 24 is formed within thecontact panel 26, and amember 35 disposed below thecontact panel 26 forms thefemale portion 34, as will be described below. In the embodiment shown inFIGS. 5 and 7 , the male andfemale portions male portion 32 is inserted within and in contact within thefemale portion 34. In the embodiment shown inFIGS. 6 and 8 , the mating male andfemale portions valves 24 are at least partially spherical. A variety of mating shapes can be used for the sealing surfaces. At least one of the male orfemale portions - The
valves 24 can operate independently of one another, or can operate in concert; e.g., in a manner wherein operating onevalve 24 causes one or moreother valves 24 to operate at least partially. In the embodiments shown inFIGS. 5-7 , eachmale portion 32 is attached to asupport member 36. Pushing on amale portion 32 that is attached to a relativelystiff support member 36 will cause one or more of the adjacentmale portions 32 to depress at least partially, thereby opening theadjacent valves 24. Alternatively, pushing on amale portion 32 that is attached to a relativelyflexible support member 36 will not cause adjacentmale portions 32 to depress at least partially, and theadjacent valves 24 will remain closed. The embodiment shown inFIG.8 illustrates an embodiment utilizingindependent valves 24 withindependent biasing elements 38. In the embodiments shown inFIGS. 4-8 , eachmale portion 32 extends up through afemale portion 34 to form avalve 24. In the embodiment shown inFIGS. 9 and 9A , themale portion 32 is attached to thecontact panel 26 and thefemale portion 34 is formed when themember 35 disposed contiguous with thecontact panel 26 is deflected to form an opening (open position shown inFIG.9A ). The present invention is not limited to the aforesaid illustrative embodiments. - The one or
more valves 24 are preferably biased in the closed position. A support member 36 (e.g., as shown inFIGS. 5-7 ) comprising an elastomeric material is an example of a means for biasing the portions of thatvalve 24 in the closed position. The elasticity of thesupport member 36 is such that a desirable amount of force applied against the exposed part of themale portion 32 overcomes the biasing force of theelastic support member 36, thereby permitting thevalve 24 to actuate from a closed position to an open position. Biasing means other than the above-described elastomeric embodiment may be used alternatively; e.g., theindependent biasing elements 38. As a further example, themember 35 disposed below thecontact panel 26 inFIG.9 may be elastomeric. - The one or
more valves 24 are preferably positioned in a pattern selected to provide a desirable distribution of shaving aid material. In the embodiment shown inFIG.2 , for example, thevalves 24 are uniformly disposed in acontact panel 26 disposed forward of therazor cartridge 12. The flow rate and distribution of the shaving aid material from thevalves 24 can be adjusted to suit the application at hand by adjusting the number ofvalves 24 within a pattern and the flow through theindividual valves 24. Flow throughindividual valves 24 is selectively chosen to accommodate the physical properties (e.g., viscosity) of the shaving aid material for a predetermined set of application parameters (e.g., temperature, surface moisture, etc.). For thosevalve 24 embodiments that include mating male andfemale portions mating portions valve 24 as the mating portions separate from one another. Other mating surface geometries may produce a stepped, or an exponential, increase in flow through thevalve 24 as the mating surfaces separate from one another. Thepresent invention valves 24 are not, therefore, limited to any particular mating geometry configuration. - The
reservoir 16 for containing the non-solid shaving aid material is in fluid communication with the selectivelyoperable valves 24. The fluid communication between thereservoir 16 and thevalves 24 permits non-solid shaving aid material within thereservoir 16 to pass from thereservoir 16 to the valves. Thereservoir 16 is not limited to any particular configuration. In some embodiments, thereservoir 16 is not intended to be separated from thehandle 18. In these embodiments, thereservoir 16 may be a refillable. In other embodiments, thereservoir 16 may be a replaceable item independent of thehandle 18, or disposable as part of areplaceable handle 18. - In the embodiment shown in
FIGS. 1-3 , theshaving apparatus 10 further includes aflow valve 40 disposed between thereservoir 16 and the one ormore valves 24. Theflow valve 40 is a two-position valve, on and off, that is operable to prevent fluid flow between thereservoir 16 and the one ormore valves 24. - In the operation of the invention, the
shaving apparatus 10 includes a volume of shaving aid material disposed within thereservoir 16 under pressure. A variety of different mechanisms can be used to create the pressure necessary to force the material out through thevalves 24, and the present invention is not limited to any particular mechanism. The user applies theshaving apparatus 10 to the surface 42 (seeFIG.7 ) to be shaved with a typical amount of normal force, and strokes theshaving apparatus 10 across thesurface 42. When theshaving apparatus 10 is applied to thesurface 42 to be shaved during normal operation, at least a part of thecontact panel 26 and at least one of thevalves 24 is placed in contact with thesurface 42. When the valve(s) 24 is placed in contact with thesurface 42, the normal force applied to thecontact panel 26 andvalve 24 changes thevalve 24 from a closed position to an open position; i.e., at least one of the mating male andfemale portions passage 30 through the valve. In the embodiment shown inFIG.9 , the normal force applied to thecontact panel 26 and themale portions 32, causes one or more of themale portions 32 to move themember 35 away from thecontact panel 26, thereby creating apassage 30 therebetween. In the open position, pressurized shaving aid material from thereservoir 16 flows through thevalve passage 30 and is applied to the surface being shaved. Once the normal force is removed, thevalve 24 returns to the closed position (i.e., thepassage 30 is closed) and the flow of shaving aid material therethrough is ceased. - The present invention shaving
aid dispenser 14 has been described above as an element within ashaving apparatus 10 having ahandle 18. According to an aspect of the present invention, the shavingaid dispenser 14 is a portion of a replaceable cartridge that can be selectively attached and removed from a shaving apparatus. When all the usable shaving aid material has been withdrawn from the cartridge, the empty cartridge can be removed from theshaving apparatus 10 and replaced with a new or refilled cartridge. - Although this invention has been shown and described with respect to the detailed embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those of skill in the art that various changes may be made and equivalents may be substituted for elements thereof without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the embodiments of the present invention described above include one or
more valves 24, each having amale portion 32 that moves relative to thefemale portion 34 to open the valve. In alternative embodiments, the female portion could move relative to themale portion 32 to open the valve.
