Description
The present invention relates to a method for processing tobacco materials with a high content of small tobacco particles, in particular a method for processing tobacco dust in tobacco preparation for the production of smoking articles.
It is known to reprocess tobacco particles, which may be obtained at various points in tobacco processing (e.g., transportation, tobacco preparation, smoking article manufacture), to make them useful. For example, tobacco mince may be included as one of the input materials for tobacco reconstitution, e.g. the tobacco sheet production can be used. In such processes, mostly continuous tobacco material bodies are produced, such as foils, sheets, threads, etc.
A disadvantage of this type of tobacco small parts processing, but also in general in the production of tobacco foil or continuous bodies of reconstituted Tobacco, is the fact that the processes are very resource-intensive and require the use of incorporated binders to process tobacco small parts meaningful.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a method of processing tobacco particles which overcomes the aforementioned disadvantages of the prior art. In particular, the tobacco small parts processing should be simple and inexpensive.
This object is achieved by a method according to claim 1. The subclaims define preferred embodiments of the invention.
According to the present invention, a material to be processed which comprises tobacco small parts and tobacco material is subjected to an increased mechanical pressure and in particular also elevated temperature and humidity, in order to adhere the tobacco small parts permanently to the tobacco material. In other words, the small pieces of tobacco are no longer sorted out and processed separately, but combined with a tobacco material to form a unit, in order to use the tobacco material with the tobacco small parts attached thereto later in the manufacture of smoking articles. This saves you the time-consuming separate processing. The small tobacco parts are simply already attached to a material or connected to the material, which is later used anyway for smoking article production. The material to be processed is expanded at the end of processing by depressurization and concomitant flash evaporation.
The present invention achieves a significant shift in size distribution towards larger particles, especially in the desired size range of 1-4mm. This can be demonstrated by sieve analyzes before and after the treatment according to the invention.
< 0,5 mm).If in the context of the present description of tobacco small parts is mentioned, so are meant in particular small tobacco pieces, which are actually considered to be disadvantageous (also in terms of taste), otherwise only sucked off or to Production of reconstituted tobacco (tobacco foil) can be used. In particular, tobacco small parts are smaller than the cut width of tobacco (eg, <1 mm), and more specifically, tobacco small parts are significantly smaller than the cut width of tobacco (eg, <0.5 mm).
When the term "tobacco material" is used herein, it basically means tobacco parts which are larger or substantially larger than tobacco small parts, in particular those tobacco parts which are suitable for use in smoking articles or at most have to be comminuted thereto. The tobacco material may e.g. a tobacco rib material, in particular a winnowing material, Stem Fibers or a tobacco leaf material and a mixture thereof.
The tobacco material to be processed and the small tobacco particles are brought to a predetermined increased humidity in the present invention. Furthermore, the material to be processed is exposed to a temperature increase, which may result in particular from external heat supply and / or from the mechanical pressure generation.
The advantages of the method according to the invention are also based in particular on the fact that tobacco materials are exposed to a mechanical pressure (for example in an extruder or a screw conveyor conditioner) together with tobacco particles under elevated temperature and defined humidity. Due to the mechanical pressure, the tobacco particles are pressed against the tobacco material and intimately connected with it. By the process conditions of the invention, the compound of the tobacco material with the tobacco particles is so strong that the tobacco material treated according to the invention is resistant to the normal stresses of cigarette production, i. the tobacco particles do not fall off during the production of air during normal production conditions. The mechanical stability is thus higher than with ordinary tobacco sheet materials.
According to the method, the material to be processed may have an amount of tobacco small parts corresponding to its processing state, but may also have more than such an amount of tobacco small parts, in particular, an amount increased by tobacco small particle addition. It would not only do so ensure that the small parts of tobacco that have already accumulated are processed, and it would also be possible to process additional tobacco particles that have been produced elsewhere in the production.
According to the invention, it is not necessary to add additional or external binders for binding the tobacco particles to the tobacco material: neither non-tobacco binders nor inherent, i.e., non-tobacco binders. naturally present in the tobacco binder. According to the method according to the invention, it is rather possible to bind the small tobacco particles mechanically and / or by the amounts of binder (inherent binders) naturally present in the tobacco to the tobacco material. By the process conditions according to the invention such inherent binder (starch, resins, sugar ...) are activated and thus hold the small tobacco particles to the tobacco material. This is in contrast to those methods where the incorporation of binders is almost essential, namely in the aforementioned film or agglomerate production.
The material to be processed can, however, in principle also be processed in batches, in particular, pressed in batches, for example in a piston-cylinder unit.
In the processing according to the invention, a product is preferably produced which is a non-continuous tobacco material, in particular a fibrous and / or granular smoking material or smoking article filling material. In other words, the method according to the invention gives a product which can be introduced into the smoking article immediately and ready for consumption. This is in particular in contrast to the production of tobacco foil (continuous tobacco material), the production of which is more complex and which still has to be cut and dried after production. The present invention provides a product having both a suitable size and moisture to be used directly as smoking article filler.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the tobacco particles may be a tobacco dust material. The tobacco dust material may be present in significant quantities without compromising the ability of the process of the present invention to produce a superior product. The proportion of dust (tobacco dust) can be up to 100% of the processed material without compromising the process success.
According to the invention, the method can be carried out so that the material to be processed comprises a proportion of the tobacco material which is greater than 25%. Further, the material to be processed may include a proportion of tobacco particles that is less than 75%.
In addition, a positive effect of the method according to the invention is still to be described, which relates to the filling capacity of the end product. The material to be processed is - as already stated above - during processing exposed to increased mechanical pressure. This increased pressure is dissipated at the end of processing, when the material exits as a product from the processing according to the process, again. This is usually done during discharge from the processing apparatus, as described above (eg extruder, screw conveyor, piston-cylinder unit). The pressure reduction during discharge from this device leads to a flash evaporation and thus to an expansion of the material. Depending on the inlet filling capacity (measured under ISO conditions), increases of up to 100% can be achieved. For example, an input material having a filling capacity of 1.5 ml / g after processing on the starting material will have a filling capacity of 3 ml / g. For another material, increases in fillability were measured from 1.5 ml / g (input material) to 4.5 ml / g (starting material, product). In accordance with the invention, filling capacities of materials with a high proportion of small parts or dust content are thus achieved which are comparable to those of cut laminate tobacco.
The invention also relates to a smoking article whose smoking material or parts of its smoking material has been produced according to a method as shown and explained above in different embodiments.
