Definitions
- the present invention relates to a self-locking device for fixing in particular an intervertebral implant.
- the intervertebral implants are essentially constituted by a wedge and by fixing means constituted by a braid or a ribbon-shaped link.
- the wedge has an elongated shape which ends at its two ends by a groove intended to receive the thorny process of one of the two vertebrae which one wishes to secure.
- the links which are fixed on the wedge surround each of the spinous processes to secure the wedge and the two vertebrae.
- PCT patent application WO02 / 071960 in the name of the applicant, an intervertebral implant has been described in which two self-locking devices for fixing the two links are provided.
- FIG. 1 there is shown an intervertebral implant of the type described in the patent application mentioned above.
- the wedge 10 has been made to appear with its two grooves 12 and 14 intended to receive the spinous processes of the vertebrae VI and V2.
- two self-locking devices 16 and 18 are used which are fixed, for example by clipping, in recesses made in the side walls 20 and 22 of the wedge 10.
- Each self-locking device 16 and 18 comprises a set of slots such as 24, 26, 28 in which one end of the links L1 or L2 is passed.
- the other end 30 of each link is made integral with the wedge by a loop 32.
- each link L1 or L2 By pulling on the free end T of each link L1 or L2, it ensures proper tightening of the link around the spinous process VI or V2 and the system 16 or 20 is self-locking insofar as, when the tension is released on the link, the latter remains blocked in the self-locking device.
- These two self-locking devices 16 and 18 have many advantages for the surgeon compared to the methods of fixing the links used in the wedges of the prior art.
- the two self-locking devices shown in FIG. 1 can have drawbacks.
- An object of the present invention is to provide a device for blocking the two links or braids of the intervertebral implant which does not have the drawback mentioned above.
- the device for blocking two braids in the form of ribbons and having a thickness said device being intended to be fixed to a wall of an element, characterized in that it consists of a body having a first face intended to be opposite the wall of said element and a second face opposite to the first face, said body having a plane of symmetry orthogonal to said first face, said body further having two ends arranged symmetrically with respect to to said plane, said plane further comprising: - an axial slot admitting said plane as a plane of symmetry, opening into the two faces of the body and having dimensions to allow the free passage of the two braids, - two lateral slots arranged symmetrically with respect to the plane of symmetry, each lateral slit opening into the two faces and having dimensions to allow the free passage of a braid; and two pressure surfaces defined in said first face of the body, each pressure surface extending between one end of the body and the nearest lateral slit, - an edge of each lateral slit defining with the pressure surface
- the double locking device which carries the reference 40 has a first internal face 42, an external face 44 and two end faces 46 and 48.
- the internal face 42 there are two housings 50 and 52 which open into the faces d end 46 and 48 and which define two flat pressure surfaces 54 and 56 parallel to the surface S of the element on which the locking device 40 is to be mounted.
- the surfaces of pressure 54 and 56 leave a space e between themselves and the surface S.
- the locking device 40 also comprises an axial slot 60 of flared shape which opens into the external face 44 and into the internal face 42.
- the device also comprises two inclined side slots 62 and 64 symmetrical with respect to the axial slot 60. Each of the side slots 62 and 64 also opens into the external face 44 and into the internal face 42 of the device.
- the housings 50 and 52 and the lateral slots 62 and 64 define edges A1 and A2 respectively.
- the lateral slots 62 and 64 also define with the external face 44 of the device two edges A'1 and A'2.
- the link L1 with its end B which is integral with the wedge and its free end T on which one can exert traction.
- the link L2 which also has the ends B and T.
- Each link L1 and L2 enters the device through the housings 50 and 52 and then into the axial slot 60. Then the link passes through one of the side slots 62 and 64 and finally in the housing 52 or 50 to come out outside the locking device.
- the edges A and A'2 are further from the median plane PP 'of the locking device than the edges Al and A2.
- the link has a Z-shaped path as regards its part which crosses the lateral slots 62 and 64.
- the distance e between the surface S of the element on which the blocking device is mounted and the surfaces pressure 54 and 56 is at most of the order of twice the thickness of the link L1 or L2, so that the two strands of each link passing through the housings 50 and 52 are clamped between the surface S and the surfaces pressure 54 and 56.
- each lateral face 70 and 72 of the blocking device is provided with clipping studs 74, 76, capable of cooperating with conjugated clipping members of the wedge. More generally, the blocking device is provided with fixing means on the element associated with it so that the appropriate distance is maintained between the surface S of the element and the pressure surfaces 54 and 56.
- FIG. 5 there is shown a first example of mounting the double self-locking device 40 on an intervertebral wedge 80. In the lateral face 82, the wedge has a housing defining the surface S and in which the device 40 is clipped.
- FIG. 6 shows a second example of mounting the self-locking device 40 on an intervertebral block 90. This block consists of two snap-on pieces 92 and 94.
- the face 96 (surface S) of the piece 94 has a housing 98 for receiving the self-blocking device 40.
- the clip recesses 100 formed in the face of the part to cooperate with the clip pins 74 and 76.
- the self-locking device could be used to fix the two ends of the same braid.
