Definitions
- the invention relates to a method and a device for communication with a system, in particular for operating and monitoring an automation system in industrial production.
- Output devices or in other words observation devices, are, for example, indicator lights, alphanumeric or graphic displays, which inform the system operator about the current system status.
- Input devices, or in other words control devices are e.g. Switches, rotary knobs or keyboards for alphanumeric input that enable the operator to influence the system.
- communication devices In the conventional way, for the purpose of communication between the user and the system, so-called operating and monitoring devices, hereinafter referred to as communication devices, are fixed to the system itself or e.g. installed in the production hall in which the system is located.
- a typical communication device has a handy housing on which input and output devices are arranged. The data exchange with the system or with its control takes place via a permanently installed connection line.
- wired communication devices With very large or difficult to access systems, wired communication devices can no longer be handled.
- mobile, ie freely movable, battery-operated communication devices that communicate wirelessly with the system and handle the data exchange with the system via radio connection.
- the wireless communication devices must be equipped with safety functions that can be used to achieve a safe system status in the event of danger.
- safety functions For radio-based communication devices, this is usually the so-called stop function.
- the stop function is usually implemented using a safety button on the communication device. Pressing this button causes the system to stop immediately.
- So-called approval functions can also be provided on the communication device.
- the enabling function is triggered by a safe, two- or three-stage enabling button in order to move safety-critical movements in the pressed or half-pressed position of the button, e.g. trigger the movement of a part of the system or the movement of a robot arm.
- a safe, two- or three-stage enabling button in order to move safety-critical movements in the pressed or half-pressed position of the button, e.g. trigger the movement of a part of the system or the movement of a robot arm.
- the mobile communication device is normally logged off from the system in a controlled manner without the radio link being broken, whereupon this is again via e.g. Permanently installed wired communication devices are operated and monitored, but continue to operate normally without triggering the safety shutdown.
- Known communication devices also have indicators for the state of charge of the battery. The operator himself has to draw the right conclusions from this, e.g. End the operation and monitoring of the system in good time with the help of the mobile communication device and log it off properly in order not to activate the system's own safety functions.
- the object of the invention is to specify a method and a device in order to enable the operator to use the full battery capacity as far as possible and yet to avoid the system downtime caused by battery draining.
- the object is achieved by a method for communicating with a system, in particular for operating and monitoring an automation system in industrial production.
- a battery-powered communication device is available for exchanging data with the system.
- the state of charge of the battery is determined and the expected remaining life of the communication device is determined from the state of charge.
- a measure is taken in the system or in the communication device.
- the determined remaining running time of the communication device that is to say the time that its user still has to communicate wirelessly with the system, has determined a meaningful quantity which can be further processed in the system or in the communication device.
- the time for example in minutes, provides much more useful information than the knowledge of the state of charge of the battery, for example in percent.
- measures can be taken in the system or in the communication device. These can e.g. consist in reducing the power consumption in the communication device by reducing the brightness of a display attached to it. Or as a measure with sufficient remaining runtime, the user is not shown any information about the charge status or remaining runtime. This does not distract him because he does not have to worry about the state of charge at this time. Other measures may be to give the user an acoustic, visual or mechanical warning, e.g. by honking, flashing or vibrating the communication device when the remaining time is approaching zero.
- Specifying a threshold value for the remaining term and taking the measure when the threshold value is reached is particularly advantageous.
- the threshold value can be set individually for each system. If, for example, the operator only needs a little time to complete any work with the communication device, the threshold value can be kept very low, so that as a rule, that is to say for most of the battery charge levels, the operator is never confronted with measures.
- the operator is not bothered, for example, for remaining terms above the threshold value, the functionality of the communication device is fully provided. The operator does not need to process any additional information.
- An advantageous measure is to indicate the remaining time to the operator.
- the display can be permanent or only below a given threshold for the remaining term. The remaining time in minutes is displayed, for example, on an alphanumeric display on the communication device.
- the user can estimate much better whether or which work he can still properly complete with the help of the communication device in the remaining remaining time before the battery is completely empty. The user can thus use the almost full operating time of the communication device and still log off the communication device to the system in good time, i.e. surrender control of the mobile communication device properly, thus avoiding the automatic plant safety shutdown of the entire plant.
- the functionality of the communication device is changed depending on the remaining time.
- the functionality of the communication device is changed depending on the remaining time.
- the user can never use the communication device to trigger functions on the system that cannot be locked within the determined remaining term. This prevents the user from triggering a process that takes too long, which would inevitably lead to the activation of the system-side safety functions due to the radio contact being torn off after the battery has been drained. The user cannot inadvertently activate such processes.
- a plurality of threshold values are specified and the functionality of the communication device is successively changed when each threshold value is reached.
- targeted user guidance can be implemented on the communication device, in which, for example, its functionality is gradually and increasingly restricted, for example with a decreasing remaining term.
- the operator has to limit himself more and more in the operation of the system. As a result, he can always be led to a safe use of the communication device, which relieves him of a lot of responsibility for incorrect operation of the communication device.
- Escalation levels can be implemented in the communication device, which range from unrestricted normal operation to warnings and restrictions on functionality to automatic intervention in the functions that can be triggered by the communication device or the system being stopped.
- the functionality is changed in such a way that an enabling function that can be triggered by the communication device on the system is forcibly deactivated.
- any consent function given by the user is automatically canceled and cannot be reactivated. This prevents the operator, for example, from carrying out safety-relevant traversing movements in a system, for which he no longer has enough time on the communication device. Safe plant operation is always guaranteed.
- the functionality is changed such that a stop function that can be triggered by the communication device on the system is forcibly activated. This is e.g. a final security level is given to trigger the safe system shutdown if the user has overlooked the remaining battery life despite all warnings before the battery is completely drained and the inevitably associated demolition of the radio link relinquishes control of the mobile communication device.
- the object is further achieved by a device for communication with a system, in particular for operating and monitoring an automation system in industrial production.
- the device has a battery- of the communication device for exchanging data with the system. It also has a measuring device for determining the state of charge of the battery and the expected remaining life of the communication device. In addition, it has a control device, which interacts with the measuring device, for taking measures in the system or in the communication device.
- the battery is usually a rechargeable battery.
- the measuring device can e.g. be a standard module for measuring the state of charge of the battery, which is already partially integrated in the battery itself today.
- a current sensor to determine the current power requirement of the communication device, possibly linked to a program module in the operating software of the
- the control device is also implemented, for example, as a program module or a corresponding control IC, which emits various electrical control signals depending on the state of charge.
- a threshold switch which cooperates with the measuring device and the control device is particularly advantageously contained in the device. This is e.g. realized as an electrical comparator or as a program module and triggers a measure depending on the remaining time by emitting a control signal.
- the device has a display device for the remaining term.
- This can be a separate display in the form of a light bar labeled with time information, but also the display of the time display in an alphanumeric display that is present anyway on the communication device.
- a changeover switch is provided in the device, which interacts with the measuring device and so on is linked to the remaining term.
- the switch can be, for example, a program module of the operating software located in the communication device in order to change the functionality of the communication device.
- An advantageous embodiment of the device provides an enabling switch that can be deactivated by the changeover switch. Is e.g. as a measure to deactivate the enabling function, the enabling switch can be deactivated by the changeover switch, ie the electrical contact in the enabling switch is completely interrupted. Even pressing the enabling switch no longer leads to an electrical connection and the approval is canceled and can no longer be activated.
- stop button that can be activated by the changeover switch.
- the contact on the stop button can be closed without the user actually pressing the switch. This is like a forced pressure on the stop button.
- FIG. 1 shows an automation system with a mobile communication device in a perspective view
- FIG. 2 shows an alternative embodiment of a mobile communication device in a top view, in four different operating states (a to d) in a schematic diagram.
- FIG. 1 shows a system 2 for industrial production with a communication device 4 in a partially broken-open representation for wireless data exchange with the system 2.
- the wireless data exchange takes place via a radio link 6 between see two antennas 8 and 10 attached to the system 2 and to the communication device 4.
- the communication device 4 has a centrally arranged, rectangular display 14 on its upper side 12. To the left and right of the display 14 there are control buttons 16 arranged parallel to the display edge, of which only the two left ones are visible in FIG. 1. Parallel to the underside of the display 14, two enabling buttons 18 are arranged on its lower edge. A stop button 20 is attached to the communication device 4 above the display 14.
- a measuring device 26 for determining the state of charge of the accumulator 22 is connected to the accumulator 22 via a measuring line 24.
- the measuring device 26 is connected to a control device 28.
- the control device 28 is in turn connected to the consent buttons 18 and the stop button 20 via control lines 30 and 32.
- a changeover switch 33 is integrated in the control device 28 and is likewise connected to the measuring device 26.
- the changeover switch 33 serves to influence the functionality of the communication device 4, that is to say, for example, to influence the display 14 and the function of the buttons 16 and enabling buttons 18.
- the changeover switch 33 thus has an influence on the control software running in the communication device 4 or the system 2.
- the stop button 20 causes an immediate system shutdown in the system 2.
- the functionality of the stop button 20 thus corresponds to that of an industrial standard red-yellow emergency stop button.
- the stop button 20 since it only works depending on the battery and its triggering is only transmitted via an insecure radio link 6 to the system 2, must not be red-yellow.
- the control buttons 16 and the enabling button 18 are assigned various functions. These are so-called softkeys.
- the enabling buttons 18 are assigned safety-related functions that are only activated while the enabling buttons 18 are held. For example, pressing the left enabling button 18 causes a robot arm to move in the system 2. This movement stops immediately when the corresponding button 18 is released.
- the stop button 20 can be activated by the control line 32, that is to say the system 2 can be stopped without it actually being mechanically pressed in.
- the control lines 30, bring about a withdrawal of the consent function in the consent buttons 18, that is to say its deactivation, without actually releasing them. Pressing the enabling button 18 again does not cause a new enabling function.
- the display 14 is a graphics-capable matrix display, which is also freely programmable in the system 2 or in the communication device 4, depending on the software program.
- a charging display 34 which reflects the state of charge of the accumulator 22 in the communication device 4.
- the accumulator is charged to about three quarters, which is why six of the eight segments 36 of the charge indicator 32 are shown as black bars. The user operating the communication device 4 obtains from this display that sufficient energy is available in the accumulator 22 to initially be able to work with the communication device 4 without restriction.
- FIG. 2 shows a mobile, portable communication device 4 in an alternative, round embodiment with a total of eight Control buttons 16 and five enabling buttons 18.
- the communication device 4 is shown in plan view.
- the accumulator 22 is fully charged, which is why all eight segments 36 of the charge indicator 34 are shown as black bars.
- energy stored in the accumulator 22 is consumed.
- the state of charge of the accumulator 22 drops, whereupon the segments 36 of the charge indicator 34, starting from the left, gradually go out.
- the remaining runtime of the communication device 4 is continuously determined internally in the device and transmitted to the control device 28 and, as it were, monitored by the latter.
- the remaining runtime is calculated in the communication device 4 in the measuring device 26 from the state of charge of the accumulator 22, the resulting amount of final energy in the accumulator 22 and the current power consumption of the communication device 4 per unit of time, either as a fixed empirical value or measured by an ammeter (not shown).
- a time of 30 minutes is determined in FIG. 1b as the maximum remaining running time.
- Four of the eight segments 36 have gone out, that is to say the accumulator 22 has dropped to about half its state of charge.
- the value of 30 minutes remaining running time is set in the control device 28 as the threshold value.
- the control unit 28 therefore takes the following measure at this point in time: When the remaining running time of 30 minutes has been reached, the expected remaining maximum running time of the communication device 4 is shown in a status line 38 below the charging display 34 in alphanumeric representation.
- a warning window 40 is shown on the display 14.
- the user is reached by the text message ⁇ Critical battery condition " Forms that the accumulator 22 has dropped to a critical charge state, in this case half the emptying of the accumulator 22 is reached.
- the warning window 40 which e.g. Process information of the system shown on the display 14 can be made to disappear by pressing an operating button 16.
- the traffic jam line 38 remains faded in during the remaining 30 minutes of the communication device 4. From this point in time, the traffic jam line 38 provides the user with more precise information about the remaining operating time than the charge indicator 34. If the accumulator 22 is more than half charged, as in FIG. 1 or 2a, which corresponds to a remaining running time of over 30 minutes however, no status line 38 is displayed so as not to bother the user with unnecessary information.
- Fig. Lb the full security-relevant functionality of the communication device 4 is still available, i.e. that all enabling buttons 18 and the stop button 20 are ready for operation.
- the functionality of some control buttons 16 has been changed such that they no longer trigger a function in FIG. 2b.
- the blocked functions are intended to trigger processes in system 2 that last longer than 30 minutes and thus exceed the remaining life of communication device 4. These functions are no longer available so that the user no longer accidentally triggers these processes at the time shown in FIG. 2b, which would inevitably lead to a loss of control after 30 minutes.
- a further threshold value is stored in the controller 28 in the communication device 4, at which a warning window 40 again appears in the display 14 as a measure.
- the warning message indicates that the enabling buttons 18 are now deactivated.
- an approval button 18 held down at this moment is deactivated, i.e. the approval function is immediately withdrawn via the control line 30, which leads to an immediate stop of the movement on the system 2 caused by it.
- the warning window 40 also informs the operator that the stop button 20 is still ready for operation, but the stop function on the system is not activated, and the system is therefore still in the normal operating state. Pressing the stop button 20 would nevertheless bring about an immediate system shutdown.
- the warning window 40 since this is already a critical warning of the user, is shown flashing, accompanied by acoustic warning tones from a loudspeaker (not shown) and by vibration of the communication device 4, namely by vibration of the accumulator 22. This draws the user's attention to the display 14 even when he is not looking there, e.g. the plant 2 observed.
- the stop function on the system 2 is activated in Fig. 2d with a remaining running time of one minute, i.e. System 2 is stopped in a defined manner from communication device 4. This is done by means of a threshold value of one minute in the control device 28 as a measure and is achieved by activating the stop button 20 via the control line 32. The operator is informed of this in turn via a warning window 40 which is no longer visible, as in FIGS. 1b and c can be removed by pressing a button 16.
- the user of the communication device 4 only has the possibility to use it again e.g. to be connected to a battery charging station (not shown) on the system 2, or at least to switch it off within the last minute of operation, in order to avoid a deep discharge of the battery 22.
- the various warning levels in FIGS. 2b and 2c should normally avoid activating the last warning level of FIG. 2d and thus stopping the system. This leads e.g. to production downtimes and other disadvantages associated with a system style.
- the operator should properly log off the communication device 4 from the system 2, at least before the last threshold of one minute remaining has been reached, in order to avoid this system downtime.
