Definitions
- the present invention relates to an applicator device for controlling the distribution of a liquid product at the outlet of a reservoir bottle. It finds application preferentially, although not exclusively, in the packaging of liquids of high price under a small volume, as it exists in particular in perfumery or pharmacy.
- the chemical, pharmaceutical or cosmetic industries market many liquid products which are packaged in bottles equipped with means for delivering the liquid product outwardly in a regulated manner, at once or in several times spaced in time.
- a particularly common example of such bottles is that of bottles containing ophthalmic solutions. These are equipped with dispensing nozzles in which a capillary duct constitutes a nozzle delivering the liquid drop by drop.
- the expulsion of each drop is favored under the effect of gravity, either when the bottle is placed upside down, or by the effect of a pressure exerted manually by compression of the walls of the liquid reservoir.
- the patent application EP 0 436 264 describes a tip of this type, for a case of application to a vaccine. It is explained how the end diameter of the capillary duct is determined to ensure the formation of a drop of desired volume.
- the present invention aims at the design of an applicator device for adjusting a liquid diffusion much slower than do the drippers. It is not however criticizable in view of the technique illustrated by the French patent application published under the number 2,720,608 .
- a portable perfume diffusion device which comprises, at the end of a capillary neck, a porous silica pellet whose role is to allow the perfume to escape to the open air, not in the liquid state, but in the vapor state.
- the applicator device of the invention is designed on the contrary to allow dispensing of a liquid product such as perfume which is selectively ensured when the applicator device is in contact with a suitable wettable surface, by a capillary migration effect of the product. in the liquid state.
- the subject of the invention is an applicator device as defined in the claims.
- the applicator device Upstream towards the reservoir bottle, the applicator device comprises a sampling tube which is advantageously constituted in the form of a capillary duct such, in particular by its diameter and its length, that it is capable, as a function of the surface tension of the liquid on its inner surface, to retain a fixed dose of liquid without it falls back into the tank, regardless of the position of the assembly relative to the direction of gravity.
- the device Downstream to the outside, the device comprises one or more capillary migration channels which are advantageously constituted by a few capillary holes through its cover and which, for their part, are so fine that they let the liquid pass only when a wettable material is brought into contact with the lid, thanks to a sufficient suction effect to overcome the capillary retention forces opposing in these capillary channels to the circulation of the liquid.
- the sampling tube and the capillary channels are different both by their respective constitutions, their relative disposition and their functions.
- the invention provides a particularly simple method of construction by carrying out the sampling tube and the capillary channels in the same room, advantageously obtained by plastic molding, which closes the reservoir bottle tightly.
- the material constitutive being the same, it is then essentially by their passage section diameter offered to the liquid that the capillary channels are distinguished from the sampling tube.
- Another advantageous difference between them is their length.
- the capillary channels are preferably relatively short, the lid being in particular relatively thin for this purpose. This facilitates the migration effect when the liquid is attracted to the wettable surface brought into contact with the lid.
- the sampling tube is, for its part, of sufficient length to accommodate the volume of a dose of liquid, namely a drop.
- the applicator device according to the invention is used for filling a reservoir containing a perfume sample.
- Perfumes and other eau de toilette are glaring examples of expensive products, which should not be wasted, while in addition it is sufficient to consume in very small quantities for them to be effective.
- the sampling tube is filled with a drop of liquid which remains trapped by capillarity, and it is only when the lid of the device is applied on the skin as the perfume passes through the capillary channels to settle on the skin of the user.
- the same suction effect that the skin provides can occur, for example, in contact with a textile material having substantially the same wettability properties, hence a manifest interest, not only for body fragrances, but also for perfume compositions used in air freshener which, once so absorbed on a textile material will diffuse gradually in the atmosphere.
- the shapes and dimensions of the sampling tube and those of the capillary channels will be chosen differently, in correspondence with the liquid contained in the bottle and with the nature of the material on which this liquid is to be applied. Examples that may be mentioned include the case of a glue applying in a very thin layer or simply having to imbibe very superficially a tissue to be glued or that of a compound with a cosmetic or pharmaceutical action present in an aqueous or oily vehicle. using by application on the skin.
- a plurality therefore at least two capillary channels, defined as such by their effectiveness vis-à-vis the migration of the liquid, through a reservoir bottle cover, between a tube for sampling the liquid which holds a determined dose of fluid taken from said reservoir against the forces of gravity and a wettable surface brought into contact with said lid by capillary action so that said channels are alternatively able to return of air into the bottle to replace the liquid consumed.
- the number of capillary channels is in particular five, each of which can be active in releasing the liquid product by capillary migration from the sampling tube or in air inlet to the reservoir of the bottle, either at the same time, or more generally when the application in contact with the wettable surface is complete.
- the applicator device sealing a reservoir bottle is completed by a cap which covers the capillary migration channels.
- a cap which covers the capillary migration channels.
- an absorbent pad made for example of plastic material in the form of foam or sponge, which absorbs within it the last traces of liquid that may remain in the surface of the perforated lid of the capillary migration channels after application to the wettable surface, but can not play the same role as the latter in suction of the liquid against the capillary retaining forces.
- the invention is implemented on a pocket bottle initially containing a perfume sample.
- the embodiments of the device according to the invention are not limited to the dimensions which will be given hereinafter, nor to the shapes which are illustrated preferentially on the Figures 1 to 5 nor to the materials, the invention extending contrary to any variant embodiment remaining within the scope of the protection provided by the appended claims.
- the applicator device 3 is in the form of a nozzle which is mounted across the neck of a tube constituting a bottle 1, intended to contain a liquid product such as perfume, illustrated in FIG. application device forms a lid 7 which covers the opening of the bottle.
- the bottle 1 consists of a glass tube. It comprises a flange 8 formed in the outer edge of its collar around its opening. It is provided to allow the attachment of the tip or lid 7 on the bottle.
- the latter is in the form of a solid cylinder, shouldered to a hollow cylinder whose inner wall is of a shape complementary to that of the flange 8. Between the hollow cylinder and an extension of the upper solid cylinder, it is arranged an annular space in which is engaged the neck of the bottle. Maintaining the lid 7 on the neck of the bottle 1 is provided by the peripheral edge of the lid 7 at the base of the inner wall of the hollow cylinder of the lid 7, which has a fastening bead 10 fitting into a complementary groove of the bottle.
- the upper face of the lid 7 which closes the opening of the bottle is pierced with a few capillary channels 5, here five in number. These channels are open at their two longitudinally opposite ends. Up on the figure 1 they open out of the device, while downwards they open into the inner cylinder of the applicator device, which forms for the perfume 2 a sampling tube 6, penetrating into the upper part of the bottle.
- the lid 7 and the sampling tube 6 are made in one piece, advantageously made of a plastics material based on polyolefins.
- Polyethylene is generally preferred, although polypropylene can also be used.
- the making is easily made by injection molding.
- the channels 5 can be made by drilling into the material once cured.
- the material thus chosen has the advantage of being resistant to chemical attack and of being more easily wettable by the perfume solutions than can be the material constituting the bottle 1, when the latter, as in the case described , is a simple glass tube having externally substantially the same diameter as the applicator device.
- the sampling tube 6 has an inside diameter much smaller than the inside diameter of the bottle 1, so as to retain perfume within it by capillarity according to the invention. Its outer diameter is determined in correspondence with the inside diameter of the neck of the bottle 1 so that the two surfaces are in sealing contact and the bottle is thus hermetically sealed at this level. In this way, the outside air can be introduced into the bottle 1 only through the capillary channels 5. These are very thin. They do not let the liquid out during periods of use.
- the sampling tube 6 has a diameter of 4 mm and a length of 12 mm, while the capillary channels have a diameter of 0.6 mm. mm and a length of 1 mm (corresponding to the wall thickness of the upper face of the nozzle constituting the applicator device).
- the applicator device 3 is completed by a removable cap 4, which covers it by closing the channels 5 outside the periods of use of the bottle.
- a removable cap 4 which covers it by closing the channels 5 outside the periods of use of the bottle.
- a thin layer of absorbent material eg organic resin foam. Its role is to mop the upper perfume film that can remain flush on the outside of the lid 3 at the end of the channels 5 after a perfume application. Its effect remains however superficial, without continuing the consumption of the remaining perfume possibly available in the tube 6.
- the cap 4 is made to be fixed on the end of the lid 7 rather than on the bottle 1.
- the cap 4 internally has a shape complementary to that of the lid 7, where there is a collar 11 formed of protruding from the peripheral surface of the cylinder full of the cover and a ring 9 formed protruding from the inner wall of the cap. This ensures a closure security that minimizes the air demand that occurs when the cap 4 is removed and promotes a rapid passage of the perfume in the capillary channels 5 of the lid 7, causing a loss of product when removing the cap.
- the cap 4 has the same outside diameter as the outer cylinder of the lid 7, and that this diameter is also substantially the same as that of the tube constituting the bottle 1.
- the sampling tube 6 Before any use of the bottle equipped with the applicator device according to the invention, the sampling tube 6 must be filled with perfume, which is easily obtained when the bottle is turned over, by passing through a position such as that which is illustrated in FIG. figure 4 .
- the perfume remains retained by capillarity in the tube 6. The capillary forces are sufficient to resist gravity when the bottle is placed in the upright, vertical position.
- the applicator device As soon as the applicator device is moved away from the surface of the skin, the attractive effect ceases, and the capillary channels resume their role in closing the tube 6, which retains the remainder of perfume removed unused.
- the air enters through one of them in the bottle 1 and restores the pressure. This allows for continuous product delivery as long as contact with the skin or equivalent material lasts.
- the pressure equalization is also useful to allow a new filling of the sampling tube from the mass of perfume remaining in the bottle.
- the applicator device according to the invention can be fixed on other bottles, for example containing cosmetic products, in particular liquid deodorants or cleaning fluids. It can also be used on vials containing products other than body-application products, for example glue vials. On the other hand, the same products can be applied to wettable materials behaving similarly to what has been explained for human skin, for example on a textile fabric.

Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an applicator device for controlling the distribution of a liquid product at the outlet of a reservoir bottle. It finds application preferentially, although not exclusively, in the packaging of liquids of high price under a small volume, as it exists in particular in perfumery or pharmacy.
The chemical, pharmaceutical or cosmetic industries market many liquid products which are packaged in bottles equipped with means for delivering the liquid product outwardly in a regulated manner, at once or in several times spaced in time.
The applicator device of the invention is designed on the contrary to allow dispensing of a liquid product such as perfume which is selectively ensured when the applicator device is in contact with a suitable wettable surface, by a capillary migration effect of the product. in the liquid state.
For this purpose, the subject of the invention is an applicator device as defined in the claims.
It is understood that according to the invention, it is exploited capillary phenomena in two different ways in the operation of the same device. Upstream towards the reservoir bottle, the applicator device comprises a sampling tube which is advantageously constituted in the form of a capillary duct such, in particular by its diameter and its length, that it is capable, as a function of the surface tension of the liquid on its inner surface, to retain a fixed dose of liquid without it falls back into the tank, regardless of the position of the assembly relative to the direction of gravity. Downstream to the outside, the device comprises one or more capillary migration channels which are advantageously constituted by a few capillary holes through its cover and which, for their part, are so fine that they let the liquid pass only when a wettable material is brought into contact with the lid, thanks to a sufficient suction effect to overcome the capillary retention forces opposing in these capillary channels to the circulation of the liquid.
The sampling tube and the capillary channels are different both by their respective constitutions, their relative disposition and their functions. The invention provides a particularly simple method of construction by carrying out the sampling tube and the capillary channels in the same room, advantageously obtained by plastic molding, which closes the reservoir bottle tightly. The material constitutive being the same, it is then essentially by their passage section diameter offered to the liquid that the capillary channels are distinguished from the sampling tube. Another advantageous difference between them is their length. The capillary channels are preferably relatively short, the lid being in particular relatively thin for this purpose. This facilitates the migration effect when the liquid is attracted to the wettable surface brought into contact with the lid. The sampling tube is, for its part, of sufficient length to accommodate the volume of a dose of liquid, namely a drop.
In its preferred applications, the applicator device according to the invention is used for filling a reservoir containing a perfume sample. Perfumes and other eau de toilette are glaring examples of expensive products, which should not be wasted, while in addition it is sufficient to consume in very small quantities for them to be effective. On the other hand, it has become customary to make available to consumers samples of small capacity, corresponding to a few drops of perfume, serving them to test the scents released under normal conditions of use, when the perfume is deposited on their skin.
Between two applications of such a perfume, for example when the bottle is returned just after an application, the sampling tube is filled with a drop of liquid which remains trapped by capillarity, and it is only when the lid of the device is applied on the skin as the perfume passes through the capillary channels to settle on the skin of the user. The same suction effect that the skin provides, can occur, for example, in contact with a textile material having substantially the same wettability properties, hence a manifest interest, not only for body fragrances, but also for perfume compositions used in air freshener which, once so absorbed on a textile material will diffuse gradually in the atmosphere.
In other cases of application, the shapes and dimensions of the sampling tube and those of the capillary channels will be chosen differently, in correspondence with the liquid contained in the bottle and with the nature of the material on which this liquid is to be applied. Examples that may be mentioned include the case of a glue applying in a very thin layer or simply having to imbibe very superficially a tissue to be glued or that of a compound with a cosmetic or pharmaceutical action present in an aqueous or oily vehicle. using by application on the skin.
According to a secondary characteristic recommended by the invention, there is provided a plurality, therefore at least two capillary channels, defined as such by their effectiveness vis-à-vis the migration of the liquid, through a reservoir bottle cover, between a tube for sampling the liquid which holds a determined dose of fluid taken from said reservoir against the forces of gravity and a wettable surface brought into contact with said lid by capillary action so that said channels are alternatively able to return of air into the bottle to replace the liquid consumed. The number of capillary channels is in particular five, each of which can be active in releasing the liquid product by capillary migration from the sampling tube or in air inlet to the reservoir of the bottle, either at the same time, or more generally when the application in contact with the wettable surface is complete.
According to yet another advantageous feature of the invention in its preferred embodiments, the applicator device sealing a reservoir bottle is completed by a cap which covers the capillary migration channels. This makes it possible to avoid the diffusion of the product by evaporation between two periods of application on the wettable surface (human skin, in particular in the case of a bodily application). Moreover, it is often useful to provide said cap with an absorbent pad, made for example of plastic material in the form of foam or sponge, which absorbs within it the last traces of liquid that may remain in the surface of the perforated lid of the capillary migration channels after application to the wettable surface, but can not play the same role as the latter in suction of the liquid against the capillary retaining forces.

In the example considered, the bottle 1 consists of a glass tube. It comprises a
The
The
In the context of the particular embodiment chosen to illustrate the implementation of the invention, the
The
On the other hand, it should be noted that the
It is only then when one applies the transverse face of the
As soon as the applicator device is moved away from the surface of the skin, the attractive effect ceases, and the capillary channels resume their role in closing the
The foregoing description clearly explains how the invention achieves the goals it has set for itself. The invention is however not limited to what has been specifically described and shown. In particular, the applicator device according to the invention can be fixed on other bottles, for example containing cosmetic products, in particular liquid deodorants or cleaning fluids. It can also be used on vials containing products other than body-application products, for example glue vials. On the other hand, the same products can be applied to wettable materials behaving similarly to what has been explained for human skin, for example on a textile fabric.
