Abstract

A device for a combustion engine (1) including a cylinder (2), a piston rod (10), a piston rod slide (14), a connecting rod (28) and a crank shaft (34), in which a crank pull (18) is joined to the piston rod slide (10) and projects laterally, relative to the piston rod (10), from the piston rod slide (10) to a rotary bearing (22), the crank pull (18) being rotatably connected to the connecting rod (28).

Description

A POWER TRANSMISSION DEVICE FOR A COMBUSTION ENGINE
This invention relates to the power transmission of a combustion engine. More specifically it concerns the mechanical connection between a piston and a crank shaft in a low-building combustion engine.
With a few exceptions, larger combustion engines according to the prior art are constructed in such a manner that the piston of the engine is displaced in a direction coinciding with the radial centre line of the crank shaft. The piston is connected to the crank shaft by means of a connecting rod, possibly by means of a piston rod via a slide and a connecting rod.
Combustion engines, especially of the kind mentioned last, exhibit a relatively great building height. This building height may involve, when used in a vessel, that, for example, the hold volume and/or hold area of the vessel will have to be reduced.
The invention has as its object to remedy the drawbacks of the prior art . The object is realized according to the invention through the features specified in the description below and in the following Claims.
A piston with a piston rod preferably fixed to it is movably arranged in a combustion engine cylinder. The combustion engine cylinder is provided with the necessary devices in accordance with techniques known in themselves for cooling and for the supply of fuel and exhaust of waste gases.
At its opposite end portion the piston rod is connected to a slide. The slide running in a guide is movable in the direction of movement of the piston rod, and the slide is arranged to absorb forces acting on the slide in other directions .
Thus, in operation, the piston, piston rod and slide together are arranged to perform a reciprocating movement along the axial centre axis of the piston.
At its one end portion a crank pull is jointed to the slide by means of a self-aligning plain bearing, the crank pull projecting from the slide at a nearly right angle relative to the piston rod. At its opposite end portion the crank pull is supported axially movable in a rotary bearing, the axis of rotation of the rotary bearing being parallel to the joint axis of the crank pull in the slide.
Thus, by movement of the slide in the guide the crank pull is brought to rotate about the rotary bearing and move axially.
At a distance from the self-aligning plain bearing the crank pull is provided with a cross-head bearing forming a joint connection for a connecting rod. The connecting rod is connected by means of a crank bearing to a crank shaft rotating in a main bearing. In a preferred embodiment an engine according to the invention includes two cylinder rows arranged side by side, each including a power transmission, the two crank shafts being rotationally connected.
This preferred structure exhibits a considerably reduced building height compared to the prior art and forms a compact engine well suited for the connection of auxiliary equipment, such as a charge air turbo and/or supercharger.
In the following will be described a non-limiting example of a preferred embodiment which is visualized in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows schematically an engine according to the invention, in which arrows indicate the direction of movement .
In the drawing the reference numeral 1 identifies a low- building combustion engine, referred to below as engine, including a cylinder 2 provided with a piston 4. The engine 1 is a two-stroke engine, in which the combustion air is compressed in a known manner in a cylinder chamber 6 below the piston 4 before flowing into the combustion chamber 8 of the cylinder 2 through channels, in a manner known in itself.
A piston rod 10 is fixed to the piston 4 and extends, in a known manner, through a stuffing box 12 arranged in the end portion of the cylinder 2.
At its opposite end portion the piston rod 10 is connected to a slide 14. The slide 14, running in a guide 16, is movable in the direction of movement of the piston rod 10 and arranged to absorb forces acting on the slide 14 in other directions . At its one end portion a crank pull 18 is jointed to the slide 14 by means of a self-aligning plain bearing 20, the crank pull 18 projecting from the slide 14 at a nearly right angle relative to the piston rod 10. At its opposite end portion, the crank pull 18 is supported axially movable in a rotary bearing 22, the rotary axis 24 of the rotary bearing 22 being parallel to the joint axis of the crank pull 18 in the self-aligning plain bearing 20.
By movement of the slide 14 in the guide 16 the crank pull 18 is thus brought to rotate about the rotary axis 24 of the rotary bearing 22 and move axially.
Next to the self-aligning plain bearing 20 the crank pull 18 is provided with a cross-head bearing 26 forming a joint coupling for a connecting rod 28. The connecting rod 28 is by means of a crank bearing 30 connected to a crank shaft 34 rotating in a main bearing 32.
When the piston 4 moves in a direction towards the piston rod 10 in its work stroke, the crank pull 18 is rotated about the rotary bearing 22 in a direction from the crank shaft 34, whereby, via the cross-head bearing 26, the connecting rod 28 and the crank bearing 30, the crank pull rotates the crank shaft 34 in the main bearing 32.
In a manner known in itself, the crank shaft 34 and the moment of inertia of mass of a not shown flywheel connected to the crank shaft 34 then make the piston 4 move in a direction away from the piston rod 10 in its compression stroke .
In this preferred exemplary embodiment, shown in section in Fig. 1, in which the crank shaft 34 is on the same side of the crank pull 18 as the cylinder 2, the engine includes two cylinder rows standing essentially mirror-inverted side by side. This embodiment is favourable with respect to, among other things, the supply of combustion air to the cylinder 2.
In an alternative embodiment not shown, both cylinders 1 may be connected to a common crank shaft 34.

Claims

C L A I M S
1. A device for a combustion engine (1) including a cylinder (2) , a piston rod (10) , a piston rod slide (14) , a connecting rod (28) and a crank shaft (34) , in which a crank pull (18) is rotatably connected to the connecting rod (28), c h a r a c t e r i z e d i n that the crank pull (18) is jointed to the piston rod slide (14) and projects laterally, relative to the longitudinal axis of the piston rod (10) , from the piston rod slide (14) to a rotary bearing (22) at the opposite end portion of the crank pull (18) .
2. A device according to claim 1, c har a c t e r i z e d i n that the connecting rod (28) is connected to the crank pull (18) closer to the piston rod slide (14) than the rotary bearing (22) .
3. A device according to claim 1 or 2 , c ha r a c t e r i z e d i n that the crank shaft (34) is on the same side of the crank pull (18) as the cylinder (2) .
4. A device according to claim 1, c h a r a c t e r i z e d i n that the angle between the longitudinal axis of the piston rod (10) and the longitudinal axis of the crank pull (18) is essentially a right angle when the piston (4) is in its mid position.
5. A device according to claim 1, c ha r a c t e r i z e d i n that the engine (1) includes two cylinder rows standing essentially mirror-inverted side by side.
6. A device according to claim 5, c ha r a c t e r i z e d i n that the pistons (4) of the two cylinder rows are connected to a common crank shaft (34) .
