Abstract

Improved handle for a window, a door or the like, comprising a grip (3) which is mainly formed of a foot (4) and an actual grip (5), characterised in that said grip (3) is provided with a weakening.

Description

  • The present invention concerns an improved handle for a window, a door or the like.
  • It is known that such a handle mainly consists of a base with which the handle is fixed to the casing of a window or the like and of a grip which is connected to the interlocking mechanism of the window or the like concerned.
  • Moreover, handles are already known which are equipped with a lock which has to prevent the handle from being turned in order to open the window or the like in case of a burglary.
  • It has been found more than once that a burglar often gains access to a house by making a hole in the glass pane of the window or the like in order to provide a tool, via said hole, between the grip and the aforesaid casing in order to jerk the handle as a whole, together with the above-mentioned lock, out of the casing, whereby said tool is used as a lever, so that the window or the like can then be simply opened.
  • The present invention aims an improved handle which cannot be jerked from the casing in the aforesaid manner and which consequently offers more security against burglary than known handles.
  • To this end, the invention concerns an improved handle for a window, a door or the like, comprising a grip which is mainly formed of a foot and an actual grip, whereby a weakening is provided in this grip.
  • In particular, in a preferred embodiment, the aforesaid weakening will be provided between the foot and the actual grip.
  • Such an improved handle according to the invention offers the advantage that, when a burglar tries to jerk the handle out of the casing in the manner described above, the actual grip, there where the weakening is situated, will break off the foot, and the rest of the handle, including the lock, will remain undamaged on the casing, as a result of which the window or the like in any case remains closed as the handle cannot be turned, and the burglar will have to apply other techniques requiring more time, which has for a result that he will give up in most cases and will clear off.
  • In order to better explain the characteristics of the invention, the following preferred embodiment of an improved handle according to the invention is described as an example only without being limitative in any way, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
  • figure 1 schematically represents an improved handle according to the invention in perspective;
  • figure 2 represents a side view of the handle according to figure 1.
  • Figures 1 and 2 represent an improved handle 1 according to the invention which mainly consists of a base 2 with which the handle 1 is fixed to the casing or the like in the known manner.
  • The handle 1 further consists of a grip 3 which is itself mainly formed of a foot 4 which is adjacent to the base 2 and of an actual grip 5.
  • From the foot 4 extends a pivot or the like which is not represented in the figures, in the known manner, and which is connected to the interlocking mechanism of the window or the like concerned.
  • In the given example, the handle 1 is equipped with a cylinder lock 6, always in the known manner.
  • According to the invention, the grip 3 of the handle 1 is provided with a weakening in the shape of a notch 7 which is preferably provided between the foot 4 and the actual grip 5 of the handle 1, in particular on the inside 8 of the grip 3, in other words on the side of the grip 3 which is directed towards the casing.
  • The notch 7 is preferably directed diagonally or almost diagonally to the longitudinal direction of the actual grip 5, and it is preferably provided up to a depth A, measured at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the actual grip 5 which is larger than half the thickness B of this grip 5.
  • Although, in the figures, the above-mentioned weakening is formed of a notch 7 on the inside 8 of the grip 3, it is not excluded that this weakening is to the same end formed of a notch on the outside 9 of the grip 3; of two notches situated on either side of the grip 3, opposite to each other; as the actual grip 5 has a narrowed part, at least locally; by providing one or several bore holes in the grip 3; by making the grip 3 at least partially hollow; etc.
  • The use of a handle 1 according to the invention is very simple and as follows.
  • When a window or the like is closed, the handle 1 is locked by means of the aforesaid lock 6.
  • In case of a burglary, a burglar will try to force his way in by making a hole in the glass pane of a window or the like in order to thus reach the handle 1 of the window, and by means of a tool which he sticks between the grip 3 and the casing, he will try to jerk the handle 1 as a whole from the casing.
  • In the case of the invention, however, this will work out badly since, thanks to the presence of the weakening between the foot 4 and the actual grip 5, the actual grip 5 will break off and the foot 4, together with the lock 6, will remain undamaged on the casing, as a result of which the window stays closed.
  • The invention is by no means limited to the above-described embodiment given as an example and represented in the accompanying drawings; on the contrary, such an improved handle according to the invention can be made in all sorts of shapes and dimensions while still remaining within the scope of the invention.
