Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method and an arrangement for improved handling of logs after turning, thereby achieving more rapid log conveying.
- Sawmills also have a number of aids for efficient handling of incoming timber products, such as felled trees in the form of logs, which must be suitably sorted and machined in as short a time as possible.
- a common method of machining a log after it has passed via a bark stripper is to convey the log on a spiked cross-piece conveyor, for example, which conveys the log lengthways , generally towards a metal detector, which detects whether there are any metal objects in the log, such as nails, for example.
- Spiked cross-piece conveyors come in many different types according to their drive elements, whether they are loaded from the side or in the direction of the conveyor and whether they are intended to have a pushing function.
- the conveyors can have many different types of chain depending on the situation and requirements.
- the standard chain sometimes has plastic blocks of low-friction plastic in order to reduce the friction, the noise level and the need for maintenance.
- the log is conveyed further for sorting according to the size of the log, etc.
- a log is most commonly sawn top-first, although the logs are not laid on the conveyor with the same end first, but may be laid with the first log root-first and the next log placed top-first, which means that they often have to be turned before they can be sawn.
- the turning of logs is most commonly done in conjunction with feeding into the saw, where the log is turned so that the top is conveyed first.
- turner which, depending on whether the top or the root comes first, turns the log at right angles to its conveying direction, either to the left or to the right, before it is rolled down on to a conveyor where the logs are then sorted, pushers rolling the logs off to the sides onto a collecting station alongside the conveyor, or directly to a saw via a bark machine.
- the aforementioned turners commonly consist of an upper rotating device comprising four descending arms, located in relation to one another so as to form a square.
- the logs are introduced at right angles by the conveyor between the descending arms, which turn the log round in the required direction at right angles to its conveying direction.
- the log is consequently turned so that it will leave the turning arrangement top-first.
- Beneath the upper rotating device comprising four descending arms there is an outlet conveyor, in proportion to the aforementioned inlet conveyor and with an alignment at right angles to the inlet conveyor. After turning, the log rolls down into said outlet conveyor, which then conveys the log towards a sorting arrangement or bark machine.
- This retardation in the speed of the logs emerging from the turning arrangement means that the incoming logs reaching the turning arrangement cannot be conveyed to the turning arrangement at the desired rate. If the incoming log reaches the turning arrangement too close to the preceding outgoing log, there is a risk of the incoming log falling down on to the preceding outgoing log. This means that the distance between the logs must be greater than is desirable in order that the outgoing logs will get clear of the turning arrangement before the incoming logs reach the turning arrangement.
- the aforementioned delay in conveying an outgoing log before the conveyor can take hold of the log and convey it in its intended onward direction varies from one instance to the next.
- the conveyor can rapidly take hold of the log and convey the entire log out of the turning arrangement, while the next time it may take longer until the log has finished bouncing against walls and floor and is conveyed out of the turning arrangement. This creates an element of uncertainty since the time spent in the turning arrangement varies from one occasion to the next, with the result that an unnecessarily long interval between logs is necessary in order to avoid the risk of collision.
- One object of the present invention is to reduce the aforementioned distance between the incoming logs.
- an improved handling of the logs is achieved after turning, with the result that faster conveying of logs is obtained as specified in claim 1.
- a conveyor for instance a spiked cross-piece conveyor, which conveys logs lengthways, usually conveys a log from a bark stripper on towards a turning arrangement.
- Said conveyor conveys the log in between the rotating device of the turning arrangement having four descending arms.
- the turning arrangement has turned the log at right angles to the desired direction, the log falls down between two walls and down onto an underlying distributing arrangement, preferably having four projecting arms, with space for a log.
- the distributing arrangement can be turned or rotated about an axis parallel to the log.
- the distributing arrangement begins to rotate one quarter turn in order to thereby tip the log out for onward conveying to further processing.
- the present invention affords the facility for reducing the interval between the incoming logs in conjunction with the turning of the log.
- Logs can be allowed to enter the turning arrangement with a shorter interval, in order to thereby increase the throughput of logs through the turning arrangement per unit time.
- a conveyor 1 for instance a spiked cross-piece conveyor, which conveys logs 2 lengthways, usually conveys a log from a bark stripper on towards a turning arrangement.
- the log Before the log enters the rotating device of the turning arrangement 3 the log must pass the measuring frame, which determines in which direction the log 2 needs to be turned in order that the correct end will come first after turning.
- said conveyor 1 conveys it in between the rotating device of the turning arrangement 3 comprising four descending arms 4.
- the log 2 falls down between two guide walls 6 and down on to an underlying distributing arrangement 7 comprising at least two or more projecting longitudinal arms 8 having a rounding between the respective arms towards the centre of the distributing arrangement 7, in which a log 2 can be accommodated.
- the distributing arrangement 7 begins to rotate one quarter turn in order to thereby tip the log 2 out.
- the walls 6 can be designed in many different ways, for example as plates, gratings, parallel rails or other suitable design.
- the log When lying in the underlying distributing arrangement, the log, which in a previous stage has preferably been sorted according to dimensions, can, by comparing the relevant sawing dimension in the measuring frame 5 with the actual dimension of the log, be selected for rotation either to the right or to the left, in order either to roll the log 2 out towards a conveying arrangement for onward transport, or to tip it towards a collecting site for rejected logs 2, which in some way do not conform to a certain desired dimension.
- the log 2 is selected for rolling off towards the conveying arrangement, such as a transverse conveyor 9, it is conveyed, for instance, to a step feeder 10.
- the step feeder 10 is used to feed logs in one at a time from a buffer to a spiked cross-piece conveyor, for example.
- This buffer is often a transverse conveyor 9, but may also be a log table.
- the moveable frame in the step feeder 10 runs with steel wheels on the fixed frame in the step feeder 10.
- Step feeders 10 come in many different variants to suit various log dimensions, lengths and shapes.
- the logs can then be conveyed via a suitable conveyor to a saw or other suitable sorting or processing arrangement.
- An advantage to the present invention is that the distance between the incoming logs 2 as they pass through the turning arrangement 3, can be considerably shortened.
- the outgoing log 2 leaves the turning the turning arrangement 3 faster than previously known arrangements, which means that the incoming logs 2 can be conveyed into the turning arrangement 3 at a shorter distance from one another without the risk of colliding with the preceding outgoing log 2.
- a further advantage to the present invention is that it affords a facility for directly sorting out logs 2 that have previously been incorrectly sorted.
- An alternative embodiment involves the use of a guide arrangement, in place of the distributing arrangement 7, which is capable of guiding the logs 2 coming down from the turning arrangement 3 either to the left or to the right.
- This may be a simple guide arrangement, which can be swung/steered to left or right in order to thereby determine in which direction the logs 2 are to be guided.
- An alternative embodiment of the distributing arrangement 7 involves designing this with more or fewer than four arms 8, as are used for preference in the present invention. Nor is it necessary to design the transition between the projecting longitudinal arms 8 of the distributing arrangement with a rounding towards its centre.
- the interstice is preferably made to conform to the shape of a log, although this is not essential to the function thereof.
