Selbst ein geringer Luftspalt kann bereits ausreichen, dass die Anzündladung nicht mehr zündet. Aus diesem Grund werden die Teile des Zünders in das Gehäuse eingepresst, worauf man das Gehäuse verschließt, sodass der hohe Druck erhalten bleibt. Trotz dieses Drucks kommt es vor, dass kein unmittelbarer Kontakt zwischen Anzündladung und Glühbrücke besteht. Die Zwischenschicht kann auf Grund ihrer Elastizität alle temperaturbedingten Längenschwankungen ausgleichen. Außerdem sorgt sie dafür, dass die Anzündladung und die Verstärker— ladung sauber getrennt bleiben und sich nicht vermischen können. Die Anzündladung entwickelt so viel Energie, dass sie die Zwischenschicht problemlos durchschlagen und die Verstärkerladung zünden kann.
