Definitions
- BSA automatic letter sorting systems
- the BSA will manage it appropriate mailing in the reject compartment. This has increased processing costs and lengthened Processing times result, since the addresses of these shipments in the reject compartment below must be entered manually.
- the address block marking is set manually, which is also possible, but after Processing of the mailing by mistake is not deactivated, so in subsequent mailings, that no longer belong to the corresponding mailing, usually on the wrong one Searched for the address block. This also leads to unnecessary rejection of shipments and the resulting adverse consequences.
- the read rates of the BSA are thus avoidably lower than if the address block on the Envelope would have been located correctly automatically.
- This task is accomplished by a method for automatic address block marking of Shipments in letter sorting systems solved, the address block automatically recognized and is marked for further processing of the address and characterized according to the invention is that the address block by forming images of two on top of each other following programs is recognized.
- the method or the letter sorting system, as outlined here, are used for automatic Address block marking at the BSA with minimal additional effort. Through this procedure according to the present invention or this BSA according to the invention are eliminated previously disadvantages mentioned largely.
- the penultimate letter as a reference for a subsequent one, preferably for the last one - that is to say current considered - it is possible to find an offset for a mailing without referring to a letter Database of stored images.
- significant cost advantages can also be expected. Additionally influenced this approach the robustness of the procedure positive.
- a preferred embodiment of the method for automatic Address block marking of mail items in letter sorting systems is characterized by that an identifiable by means of image recognition and of its geometric outlines ge locally determinable area with, preferably above a residual threshold, remaining Remaining patterns after forming the difference between the images of the two successive images Shipments are automatically recognized as an address block.
- the address field area can be determined locally a residual pattern remaining after the difference has been formed.
- the process for automatic address block marking of mail items in letter sorting systems according to the present invention is preferably also designed to be based the difference image of two consecutive programs is decided whether the the following program belongs to the same mailing as the previous program, what can easily happen, for example, by adding up the amplitudes of the difference image matrix and compared with a threshold. If the threshold is exceeded, the difference is too high and the two images compared do not belong to one Mailing. If, on the other hand, the threshold is undershot or only reached, they are part of the same mailing. When determining the threshold value, it makes sense to take into account what values typically result when you look at the amplitudes of the individual pixels of the address field, since this is the variable within the same mailing represents.
- the images B A and B M after step b) and before step c) can each be aligned in such a way that the highest possible congruence between them is achieved, which is conducive to the difference image determination, it being noted that this congruence alignment for everyone in the Differential image determinations addressed within the scope of the present invention comes into question.
- the one recognized by the method according to the invention is preferably recognized automatically Address block marked in that around it one, preferably in size for Suitable addressing, rectangle is placed.
- key figures are determined for the comparison pattern B M used in each case as reference, which based on a few criteria allow a probability statement as to whether the letter currently being viewed B A belongs to the same mailing as B M.
- the following key figures are used, for example: the number of different colors or grayscale, a histogram of the color / grayscale distribution, the proportion of unprinted area as well as mean values, quantiles and ranges for brightness and contrast properties.
- these key figures can be determined on a restricted partial letter image or on the overall letter image.
- an area must be selected and specified for the mailing that lies outside the suspected address block area and differs as much as possible from monochrome (including unprinted areas).
- the franking area should not be used as a partial letter for the determination of these key figures.
- the current address block marking belonging to B M is stored.
- a new identification of the address block can then be dispensed with and the stored address block position can be adopted, or specifically in a slightly expanded area around the stored address block position after current address block are searched, or the evaluation can be carried out without using a stored address block position.
- An embodiment of the method according to the invention is therefore also used for automatic Address block marking of mail items in letter sorting systems preferred in the case of the basis of a key figure comparison of the key figures of the respective picture between the previous shipment serving as a reference and a respective one currently viewed following program by way of a probability assessment a decision is made as to whether the subsequent consignment viewed in each case belongs to the same mailing belongs like the previous broadcast, which serves as a reference.
- a partial image area of the image of the mail items can be used for the determination the key figure or key figures are used, preferably as a partial image area an area is selected that is outside the presumed address block area lies and which, including the unprinted areas, is as little as possible monochrome and which is preferably also outside the franking area.
- images B A and B M after step b) and before step c) can each be aligned in such a way that the highest possible congruence between them is achieved, which - as already discussed - is conducive to determining the difference image, although here too It should be noted once that this congruence alignment can be used for all differential image determinations addressed in the context of the present invention.
- the automatic marking of the address of a mailing is preferably also used for the subsequent mailings assigned to the same mailing.
- B A belongs to the same mailing as picture B M
- it is preferable afterwards to dispense with a new automatic address block search and marking by means of differential picture creation and the address block marking which has already been saved can be adopted for the mailing with picture B A.
- the address of a subsequent mailing of the same mailing can also be targeted in one slightly expanded area searched for the already existing automatic marking become.
- this extended image memory can be designed as a temporary memory for a small number of different images or as a permanent image database.
- the inventive method for automatic address block marking of mail items in letter sorting systems preferably also be designed so that in the event that it is decided that the subsequent program does not belong to the same mailing as the previous broadcast, a comparison of the respective ones subsequent program with comparison samples in an expanded image memory is carried out, the expanded image memory including such comparison patterns Address block position and / or any key figures or key figures available from already evaluated images come from mailings, based on which the identification of a new shipment from the respective deposited mailing and the corresponding one automatic address block marking takes place.
- a manual address block marking option is preferred provided that also a storage of the image with a manual marked address block in the expanded image memory as a comparison pattern.
- the present one described above can be described more in terms of procedure Invention of course also as a device, for example in the context of a letter sorting system with appropriate control, the difference from the recorded letter images determined - which is not necessarily - but preferably using a computer happens -, and then the typical pattern of the address block searched for, preferably typical structure, for example based on a degree of similarity to a comparison pattern, recognizes.
- 1 shows the basic structure of a letter sorting system 6 and the problem of rejecting letters 0a , 0b that occurs because the address block 4 is not recognized .
- Mail items 0a, 0b specifically letters from mailings with extensive advertising imprints 0a and also letters 0b , which do not originate from such mailings, reach a letter sorting system 6 , which has a control 6a , for example a computer with a memory, which contains the address block 4 of the respective letters 0a , 0b should be automatically recognized and marked by means of an address block marker 5 , preferably in the memory of the computer, so that the address can then be read automatically. If this succeeds, so an automatic address block marking 5 can take place, the letter 0b leaves the letter sorting system 6 in the normal way 7 for further processing.
- a control 6a for example a computer with a memory, which contains the address block 4 of the respective letters 0a , 0b should be automatically recognized and marked by means of an address block marker 5 , preferably in the memory of the computer, so that the address can then be read automatically. If this succeeds, so an automatic address block marking 5 can take place, the letter 0b leaves the letter sort
- the address block 4 is automatically recognized here and marked 5 for further processing of the address, this being done in such a way that the address block 4 is recognized by forming images BM , BA of two consecutive programs.
- images BM , BA of two consecutive programs preferably an identifiable by means of image recognition and geometric by its outlines forth locally determinable area with, preferably automatically detected above a Restschwell learners, remaining residual pattern 4a by subtraction of the images BM, BA of the two consecutive broadcasts as the address block 4a and by means of a Adreßblockmark ist 5, here a Rectangle, marked in the difference image BD .
- the disturbing elements which are almost always the same, such as sender details 2 , advertising imprints 3a, 3e logos 3b, 3c, 3d, but also the franking area 1 with the postage stamp outside the address block 4 - Blended away (at least up to a residual threshold value), which then enables the identification of the address block 4 , where this blending does not work due to the different addresses, and as a result an address field area that can be identified by means of image recognition and that can be determined spatially based on its geometric outlines, with an after difference formation remaining residual pattern 4a for marking 5 remains in the difference image BD .
- FIG. 3 shows an unsuccessful automatic address block marking based on a difference image determination.
- the address block 4 cannot be automatically recognized here based on the difference image determination and marked for further processing of the address, since the difference image BD due to the difference in the images BM, BA of the two consecutive programs not only one now due to the different position of the address block 4 in the images BM and BA shows extended residual pattern address block 4a , but also residual patterns in the sender area 2a , residual patterns in the franking area 1a (since different postage stamps may have been used here) and negative residual patterns 3aa, 3ba, 3ca in advertising or logo printing areas.
- an automatic Adreßblockerkennung and thus mark 5 and accordingly no such Adreßblockmark ist 5 are first saved.

Abstract
Description
Current automatic letter sorting systems (BSA) are used for reasons of efficiency tries to recognize the address block of a shipment as fully automatically as possible.
However, this is encountered with the letter sorting systems and the methods customary for their operation according to the state of the art in certain cases for technical difficulties. So be for shipments with a large proportion of printed surface, such as large areas Advertising imprints often do not automatically recognize the address blocks correctly.
In these cases, the operator today has the option of using a manual address block marking tell the system where on the envelope there is the address block is located, but practical experience shows that this is manual Intervention is problematic in several ways:
If the employee fails to manually mark the address block, the BSA will manage it appropriate mailing in the reject compartment. This has increased processing costs and lengthened Processing times result, since the addresses of these shipments in the reject compartment below must be entered manually.
The address block marking is set manually, which is also possible, but after Processing of the mailing by mistake is not deactivated, so in subsequent mailings, that no longer belong to the corresponding mailing, usually on the wrong one Searched for the address block. This also leads to unnecessary rejection of shipments and the resulting adverse consequences.
The read rates of the BSA are thus avoidably lower than if the address block on the Envelope would have been located correctly automatically.
The evaluation of the address even if the address block is found is for the type of the considered Programs according to the current state of the art are rather unproblematic. however Every manual intervention in the process requires working time and, of course, also involves additional error potential.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide methods and systems that good automatic address block recognition even for large areas with advertising imprints enable provided mailings.
This task is accomplished by a method for automatic address block marking of Shipments in letter sorting systems solved, the address block automatically recognized and is marked for further processing of the address and characterized according to the invention is that the address block by forming images of two on top of each other following programs is recognized.
This object is also achieved by a letter sorting system according to the invention with a control device solved, wherein the control device controls the letter sorting system so that it works according to the inventive method.
The method or the letter sorting system, as outlined here, are used for automatic Address block marking at the BSA with minimal additional effort. Through this procedure according to the present invention or this BSA according to the invention are eliminated previously disadvantages mentioned largely.
By using a previous, preferably the penultimate letter as a reference for a subsequent one, preferably for the last one - that is to say current considered - it is possible to find an offset for a mailing without referring to a letter Database of stored images. In addition to speed advantages significant cost advantages can also be expected. Additionally influenced this approach the robustness of the procedure positive.
Series are preferably used as the data basis for the method or the sorting system of letter images taken at a BSA and in a common one Data format for image files available for evaluation. Then on this data preferably carried out the described steps.
A preferred embodiment of the method for automatic Address block marking of mail items in letter sorting systems is characterized by that an identifiable by means of image recognition and of its geometric outlines ge locally determinable area with, preferably above a residual threshold, remaining Remaining patterns after forming the difference between the images of the two successive images Shipments are automatically recognized as an address block.
By forming the difference between two images according to the present invention disturbing - and roughly always the same elements outside the address block - (at least up to a residual threshold value), which then identifies the address block enables where this fading away due to the diversity of addresses does not work with each other and as a result an identifiable one by means of image recognition and with its geometrical outlines, the address field area can be determined locally a residual pattern remaining after the difference has been formed.
The process for automatic address block marking of mail items in letter sorting systems according to the present invention is preferably also designed to be based the difference image of two consecutive programs is decided whether the the following program belongs to the same mailing as the previous program, what can easily happen, for example, by adding up the amplitudes of the difference image matrix and compared with a threshold.
In the event that it is decided on the basis of the difference image B D that B A does not belong to the same mailing as the image B M , the procedure can be followed such that the image B A becomes B M , that is to say the comparison pattern for the next letter image to be evaluated, and then proceeding to step b) of the method if not all letters have been processed yet.
Also, the images B A and B M after step b) and before step c) can each be aligned in such a way that the highest possible congruence between them is achieved, which is conducive to the difference image determination, it being noted that this congruence alignment for everyone in the Differential image determinations addressed within the scope of the present invention comes into question.
The one recognized by the method according to the invention is preferably recognized automatically Address block marked in that around it one, preferably in size for Suitable addressing, rectangle is placed.
Dies auch vor folgendem Hintergrund:Depending on the specific target weighting (highest possible recognition rate vs. highest possible processing speed) and the performance of the hardware to carry out the process (trade-off costs by the device vs. costs for manual Editing) can the embodiments of the present described above Invention can be further supplemented or modified. This also before the following Background:
Is the evaluation speed, e.g. due to limited hardware resources sufficient to determine the difference image, for example, after knowledge of the first and second letter to be able to automatically identify and mark the address block, before the letter image of the next letter is pending, during this initialization time the procedure for a new mailing within the letter series if necessary Letters rejected. It is therefore possible that the address block from the difference image evaluation of two letters is available for the first time after further letters have already passed the BSA to have.
In order to be able to quickly decide whether the letters to be processed after such an initialization of the method to be processed subsequently, key figures are determined for the comparison pattern B M used in each case as reference, which based on a few criteria allow a probability statement as to whether the letter currently being viewed B A belongs to the same mailing as B M. The following key figures are used, for example: the number of different colors or grayscale, a histogram of the color / grayscale distribution, the proportion of unprinted area as well as mean values, quantiles and ranges for brightness and contrast properties. Alternatively, these key figures can be determined on a restricted partial letter image or on the overall letter image. If the determination is made on a partial letterhead, an area must be selected and specified for the mailing that lies outside the suspected address block area and differs as much as possible from monochrome (including unprinted areas). The franking area should not be used as a partial letter for the determination of these key figures.
As soon as it is known, the current address block marking belonging to B M is stored. Depending on the probability that B M and B A belong to the same mailing due to the aforementioned key figure analysis, a new identification of the address block can then be dispensed with and the stored address block position can be adopted, or specifically in a slightly expanded area around the stored address block position after current address block are searched, or the evaluation can be carried out without using a stored address block position.
An embodiment of the method according to the invention is therefore also used for automatic Address block marking of mail items in letter sorting systems preferred in the case of the basis of a key figure comparison of the key figures of the respective picture between the previous shipment serving as a reference and a respective one currently viewed following program by way of a probability assessment a decision is made as to whether the subsequent consignment viewed in each case belongs to the same mailing belongs like the previous broadcast, which serves as a reference.
- the number of different colors or grayscale, and / or
- the proportion of unprinted area, and / or
- Averages and / or quantiles and / or ranges are used for brightness and / or contrast properties.
As already mentioned, only a partial image area of the image of the mail items can be used for the determination the key figure or key figures are used, preferably as a partial image area an area is selected that is outside the presumed address block area lies and which, including the unprinted areas, is as little as possible monochrome and which is preferably also outside the franking area.
subsequent programs are not treated separately, so they may also be rejected, if necessary
on the basis of a comparison of key figures of the determined key figures of the respective image between the image B M , which serves as a reference, and the respective image B A currently being viewed, a decision is made as to whether B A belongs to the same mailing as the image B M , whereby
Here, images B A and B M after step b) and before step c) can each be aligned in such a way that the highest possible congruence between them is achieved, which - as already discussed - is conducive to determining the difference image, although here too It should be noted once that this congruence alignment can be used for all differential image determinations addressed in the context of the present invention.
The automatic marking of the address of a mailing is preferably also used for the subsequent mailings assigned to the same mailing. Thus, in the event that it is decided that B A belongs to the same mailing as picture B M, it is preferable afterwards to dispense with a new automatic address block search and marking by means of differential picture creation and the address block marking which has already been saved can be adopted for the mailing with picture B A.
The address of a subsequent mailing of the same mailing can also be targeted in one slightly expanded area searched for the already existing automatic marking become. In this case it is also possible to switch to a new automatic one Address block search and marking through completely new differential image creation to do without and instead target in a slightly expanded area around the already saved Address block marker to look around for the current address block.
Automatic marking of the address of a shipment is also required for the subsequent, shipments assigned to the same mailing are not used. So that can in this case also by a new automatic address block search and marking completely new creation of difference images and instead the address evaluation made without using the address block position already saved become.
In order to increase the identification rate of the automatic address block marking, in the event that the letter images B M of the template and B A of the current letter do not originate from the same mailing, a comparison can be made on an expanded image memory. In the expanded image memory, comparison samples of letter images that have already been evaluated from various mailings, including the identified address block position and / or key figures, are kept for quick identification of a new letter from this mailing. Depending on the hardware configuration and objectives, this extended image memory can be designed as a temporary memory for a small number of different images or as a permanent image database.
Therefore, the inventive method for automatic address block marking of mail items in letter sorting systems according to the present invention preferably also be designed so that in the event that it is decided that the subsequent program does not belong to the same mailing as the previous broadcast, a comparison of the respective ones subsequent program with comparison samples in an expanded image memory is carried out, the expanded image memory including such comparison patterns Address block position and / or any key figures or key figures available from already evaluated images come from mailings, based on which the identification of a new shipment from the respective deposited mailing and the corresponding one automatic address block marking takes place.
Die Zuordnung von aktuellen Bildern BA zu diesen Vergleichsmustern BM verläuft analog zu den übrigen Vergleichsmustern (s.o.).For the variant with connected image database, the option of manual address block marking with subsequent storage of the comparison sample in the database is also provided. The assignment of current images B A to these comparison patterns B M is analogous to the other comparison patterns (see above).
Therefore, according to the present invention, a manual address block marking option is preferred provided that also a storage of the image with a manual marked address block in the expanded image memory as a comparison pattern.
As already said, the present one described above can be described more in terms of procedure Invention of course also as a device, for example in the context of a letter sorting system with appropriate control, the difference from the recorded letter images determined - which is not necessarily - but preferably using a computer happens -, and then the typical pattern of the address block searched for, preferably typical structure, for example based on a degree of similarity to a comparison pattern, recognizes.
Also applies to all the embodiments of the present invention described above it goes without saying that they are implemented using a computer program product which can be a computer-readable medium with computer program code means has or is also present as a computer program product on a carrier signal, and which after loading it into a computer for the operation of the invention Method according to the previously discussed embodiments of the causes the present invention. The same applies, of course, to such Computer program also independent of a data carrier or carrier signal.
It should also be noted that the transmission of the image information for the present invention is irrelevant. It works on sequential as well as on blocks or completely presented pictures.
Finally, different types of franking and tolerances in positioning and alignment of the franking within the present invention of a series of letters offset for a mailing.

Problem der Rejektierung von Briefen 0a, 0b wegen Nichterkennung des Adreßblocks 4. 1 shows the basic structure of a letter sorting system 6 and the problem of rejecting letters 0a , 0b that occurs because the
Mail items 0a, 0b , specifically letters from mailings with extensive advertising imprints 0a and also letters 0b , which do not originate from such mailings, reach a letter sorting system 6 , which has a

geometrischen Umrissen her örtlich bestimmbares Gebiet mit, vorzugsweise oberhalb
markiert. 2 shows a successful automatic address block marking 5 on the basis of a difference image determination. The
By forming the difference between two images BM, BA , according to the present invention, the disturbing elements, which are almost always the same, such as sender details 2 ,
3 shows an unsuccessful automatic address block marking based on a difference image determination. The
