Definitions

  • a construction kit for retention of a plate-shaped panel member on a building front comprising a frame adapted to be mounted on said building front and a moulding, said frame having a flange extending along the circumference of the frame and said moulding being adapted for mounting on the frame along said flange for retention of an edge area of the panel member between the flange and the moulding, the moulding having a cross-section with a first leg and a second leg, the first leg, in the mounted position of the moulding on the frame, resting on the panel member in such a way that the second leg is kept in locking engagement with the frame.
  • DE 26 06 645 describes a device for mounting cladding panels on a wall, a supporting profile being mounted on the wall for retention of the edges of two adjacent panels.
  • the backs of the edges of the panels abut on abutment surfaces of the profile so that a flange of the profile projects up between the edge surfaces of the panels.
  • a groove is formed with two serrated sidewalls
  • a retention moulding is formed with two serrated walls arranged in parallel and fitting into the groove so that the serrations of the walls can engage with the serrations on the groove walls at resilient action of the walls against each other.
  • the engagement between the retention moulding and the supporting profile is of limited strength, however, as the two serrated walls of the retention moulding can be released from the supporting profile by resilient action against each other if the mounted panels influence the retention moulding by a sufficiently large force directed away from the wall.
  • This solution is therefore not suited for, for example, outdoor front cladding, where wind often occurs and grips the panels.
  • DE 298 18 380 and GB 2 292 170 describe a glazing bead having a cross-section with a first leg and a second leg, whereby the first leg rests on a panel member mounted in a frame in such a way that the second leg is kept in locking engagement with the frame.
  • the object of the present invention is to provide a frame which makes it possible to retain plate-shaped panel members of varying thicknesses securely in a simple manner.
  • the construction kit according to the invention is characterized in that the moulding (6) has a substantially V-shaped cross-section, and in that a stud (24) projecting away from the moulding (6) at the transition between the first and the second legs (14, 15) of the cross-section is kept in locking engagement with one of a number of serrations (25) formed on the frame (1) along a circumferential inward-facing surface (27) thereof (1), whereby the moulding (6) is kept in one of a number of locking positions, in which positions the first leg is at different distances from the flange on the frame.
  • the moulding can be arranged in a steady locking position on the frame without the use of extra locking members in one simple mounting operation, as the position of the moulding is at the same time adapted to the thickness of the current panel.
  • the second leg of the cross-section of the moulding is held in locking engagement with the frame exactly because the first leg rests on the panel member, the panel member cannot be pressed out of the frame, for example by wind, as the influence on the panel member will thus simply influence the first leg by an even greater force, with a resulting even stronger locking effect of the second leg in relation to the frame.
  • the locking effect of the moulding is thus self-reinforcing.
  • the serrated cross-section can be formed on the frame in an easily accessible place. Furthermore, this may make it easier to dismount the moulding, as the locking engagement between the moulding and the frame occurs at an easily accessible place, where the moulding can therefore easily be disengaged from the frame, possibly by means of a tool.
  • the second leg of the cross-section of the moulding in the mounted position of the moulding, is inserted in a slot in the frame.
  • the second leg may at its free end abut on a first sidewall of the slot, and at its opposite end abut on a second sidewall of the slot so that the moulding is thus kept fixed in the frame by abutment at the three areas mentioned.
  • the sidewall on which the second leg abuts with its non-free end may be extended in relation to the opposite sidewall in order to allow several positions of the moulding in relation to the frame.
  • the stud on the moulding and the serrations on the frame extend in the circumferential direction of the frame and the longitudinal direction of the moulding, respectively.
  • the V-shaped cross-section of the moulding may advantageously have an extra projecting stud located beside the first stud and displaced in relation to it in a direction towards the first leg of the moulding.
  • a tool such as a screwdriver, can be inserted between the frame and this extra stud, whereby the moulding can be lifted out of its locking engagement with the frame by means of the tool.
  • the kit further comprises an elastic panel strip for wedging between the first leg of the moulding and the panel member in the mounted position of the moulding.
  • the moulding may be made of a relatively stiff material, such as aluminium, and at the mounting of the moulding on the frame the moulding is first placed in engagement with the frame, and then the elastic panel strip is pressed in between the panel member and the first leg of the cross-section of the moulding, whereby the moulding becomes locked in relation to the frame.
  • the moulding and the panel strip are manufactured as an integral whole, for example as an extruded plastic moulding with a co-extruded strip of TPE.
  • the mounting and dismounting of the moulding is also facilitated thereby, as only one combined moulding and strip has to be handled.
  • the moulding may further be manufactured from an elastic material, which may facilitate mounting and possibly obviate the need for a panel strip, as tolerances can then be absorbed by the moulding.
  • the frame is composed of frame members made by cutting of an extruded profile
  • the moulding comprises a moulding member corresponding to each frame member and made by cutting of an extruded profile.
  • the second leg may have a notch extending in the longitudinal direction of the moulding. This allows the second leg of the moulding to have a length so that even relatively thick panel members can be mounted in the frame, while the moulding can also be used for mounting of substantially thinner panel members, as the outer end of the second leg of the moulding can be broken off along the notch before mounting so that the leg becomes shorter, and the first leg of the moulding can thus be mounted at a shorter distance from the frame.
  • the sidewall may have a notch extending in the circumferential direction of the frame.
  • breaking off the free section of the sidewall at the notch may allow particularly thin panel members to be mounted in the frame.
  • Fig. 1 shows a frame 1 composed by an upper frame member 2, a lower frame member 3 and two side members, not shown.
  • the frame members 2, 3 are all cut of an extruded aluminium profile with the same cross-section and are mitred into a rectangular frame 1.
  • a plate-shaped panel member 4, such as a pane, has been inserted in the opening of the frame, the panel member 4 being retained between a flange 5 of the frame 1 and a moulding 6 mounted in the frame.
  • the frame is divided in the middle and thus not shown in its full height.
  • the frame 1 is mounted on a building front 7, a hanging bracket 8 being mounted on the front by means of bolts, not shown, at each of the corners of the frame 1.
  • the frame can also function as a window.
  • the flange 5 projects over an edge area 9 of the panel member 4 along its entire circumference.
  • a U-shaped channel 10 open towards the panel member 4 and countersunk at its opening so that an outer panel strip 11 can be retained in the channel.
  • the panel strip 11 comprises a first section 12 of rather solid EPDM with wedge-shaped barbs pressed resiliently into the channel 10 so that they grip under the countersinking of the channel, and a second section 13 connected with the first section and made of foamed EPDM, which abuts on the panel member 4 and thus absorbs tolerances between the flange 5 and the panel member.
  • the moulding 6 is also cut from an extruded aluminium profile and has a substantially L-shaped cross-section with a first leg 14 and a second leg 15.
  • the first leg 14 projects over the edge area 9 of the panel member 4 and abuts on the edge area 9 via an inner panel strip 16.
  • the inner panel strip 16 is made of solid EPDM so that it is relatively elastic and can thus absorb tolerances between the panel member 4 and the moulding 6.
  • a stud 17 facing the panel member 4 is formed and engages with a corresponding groove 18 in the panel strip 16 so that the latter is kept in place in relation to the moulding 6.
  • the inner panel strip 16 has resilient ribs 19 abutting on the panel member 4. Both panel strips 11, 16 may also be made of other suitable materials.
  • the second leg 15 of the cross-section of the moulding 6 extends between a peripheral edge surface 20 of the panel member 4 and the frame member 2, 3, and a free end 21 of the leg 15 projects into a slot 22 with a U-shaped cross-section open towards the front 7 and, at its side facing the first leg 14, abuts a first sidewall 23 of the slot 22.
  • a first stud 24 is formed, projecting from the moulding 6 and engaging with one of a number of serrations 25 constituting a serrated profile section formed along a surface 27 of the frame members 2, 3 which faces the centre of the frame 1.
  • a second stud 26 is formed at the non-free end of the first leg 14 of the cross-section of the moulding.
  • This stud 26 is elevated in relation to the first stud 24 in a direction towards the first leg 14 of the moulding, as seen in a cross-section of the moulding, and it is therefore easily accessible from the inside of the frame and can thus be used as abutment for a tool, for example a screwdriver, at dismounting of the moulding 6, as the latter is lifted slightly away from the serrated profile section, whereby the first stud 24 on the moulding 6 disengages from the serration 25.
  • a tool for example a screwdriver
  • the serrations 25 in the frame members 2, 3 are formed so that, at pressure on the moulding 6, the first stud 24 on the moulding 6 can jump from one serration 25 to a subsequent serration 25, located closer to the panel member 4, but so that the stud 24 cannot jump to another serration 25 located in the opposite direction.
  • the serrations 25 may, for example, be formed so that their opposite sidewalls substantially incline towards the panel member 4.
  • the frame is turned with its outer surface downwards, and the panel member 1 is placed against the outer mounted panel strip 11, and distance blocks, not shown, are arranged between the peripheral edge surface 20 of the panel member 4 and the frame members 2, 3.
  • the moulding 6 is arranged in its position shown in Fig. 1 so that the second leg 15 of its cross-section abuts in the slot 22 by its free end 21, and its stud 24 engages with a suitable serration 25 on the frame members 2, 3.
  • the elastic panel strip 16 is pressed in between the panel member 4 and the free end of the first leg 14 of the cross-section of the moulding 6, until the groove 18 on the panel strip 16 engages with the stud 17 at the free end of the first leg 14.
  • Fig. 2 shows a vertical cross-section, corresponding to the one of Fig. 1, through the lower frame member 3 of the frame 1, a substantially thinner panel member 4 being mounted in the frame.
  • the second leg 15 of the cross-section of the moulding 6 is here displaced substantially further into the slot 22 in the frame member 3, and that the stud 24 engages with the serration 25 located closest to the panel member 4.
  • Fig. 3 shows an embodiment of the frame 1, corresponding to the one shown in Fig. 2, except that the inner panel strip 16 has been omitted so that the free end of the first leg 14 of the cross-section of the moulding 6 abuts directly on the inner surface of the panel member 4.
  • the moulding may possibly be formed from an elastic material, such as plastics. However, it may also be sufficient that the said tolerances are absorbed by the outer panel strip 11, particularly if there is no need for a further sealing effect at the inner surface of the panel member 4.
  • the moulding 6 At mounting of the moulding 6 in this embodiment it is simply pressed into place until the stud 24 engages with a suitable serration 25, as the outer panel strip 11 yields resiliently at the pressure or the moulding 6 itself yields resiliently.
  • the angle between the legs 14, 15 of the cross-section of the moulding 6 need not be a right angle, as the cross-section is V-shaped.
  • Fig. 4 shows an embodiment in which, at a distance from its free end 21, the second leg 15 of the moulding 6 has a notch 28 extending in the longitudinal direction of the moulding. Furthermore, at a distance from a free end 29 of the sidewall 23, the sidewall 23 of the slot 22 in the frame 1 has a notch 30 extending in the circumferential direction of the frame 1. If the outermost sections of the second leg 15 of the moulding 6 and the sidewall 23 of the slot 22 are broken off, it is possible to mount particularly thin panel members in the frame 1, as the first leg 14 of the moulding can thus be mounted closer to the flange 5 of the frame 1.
  • both the notches 28, 30 shown may be necessary to achieve this option, but otherwise one of the notches 28, 30 shown may be sufficient therefor.
  • the serrations 25 may, for example, be formed by machining after extrusion of the frame members, and then they may possibly be formed at several delimited areas along the circumference of the frame 1, for example in three places along each frame member 2, 3.
  • moulding 6 and an inner panel strip 16 are formed as an integral whole; these members may, for example, be co-extruded in plastics.
