Abstract
Description
- The present invention refers to an electromechanical handle unit for semi-automatically opening the boot, or similar compartment, of a motor-vehicle, in particular a motor-car.
- The handle for opening the boot, or a rear door, or the like, of motor-vehicles is generally known to be preferably assisted, for actuation, by an electromechanical switch adapted to energize an electric motor, an electromagnet, or the like, in such a manner as to release, i.e. snap open the lock of the same boot, or similar compartment, with a minimum, negligible manual effort by the user.
- Usually, such a handle unit mainly comprises a hollow support frame adapted to be attached to the boot (or, anyway, to the bodywork) of the motor-vehicle. This support frame in turn accommodates a box-like member, fastened on the rear side by means of screws, inside which there is hinged, by means of one or more transversal hinging pins, an actuating handle that is normally held in its resting position by at least a return spring.
- Both the support frame and the box-like member have a cross-section in the shape of a substantially reverse U, each one of which has an open side defined by a flanged edge.
- The flanged edge of the box-like member is embraced by a corresponding peripheral lip of a flexible membrane that closes said open side of the box-like member and, therefore, of the whole handle unit. At the same time, the flexible membrane allows for the handle to be operated from the outside so as to cause an inner jut thereof to actuate the electromechanical switch, which is also provided within said box-like member, so as to release the lock of the boot.
- In particular, the flanged edge of the box-like member keeps the lip of the membrane bearing against a corresponding peripheral shoulder of the hollow support frame, so that the membrane is capable of tightly isolating the interior of the handle unit (in particular the electric component parts thereof) from the outside ambient.
- Now, these prior-art solutions require a considerable number of parts which have to be assembled in an inconvenient and toilsome manner, whereby the fabrication, i.e. manufacturing of the whole handle unit on an industrial scale turns out to be undesirably expensive.
- It therefore is a main purpose of the present invention to provide an electromechanical handle unit for opening the boot, or similar compartment, of a motor-vehicle, which has a particularly simple structure, with a reduced number of component parts that are easily assembled in a quick and low-cost manner.
- According to the present invention, this aim is reached in an electromechanical handle unit incorporating the features and characteristics as recited and defined in the appended claims.
- Features and advantages of the present invention will be more readily understood from the description that is given below by way of non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
- Figures 1 and 2 are cross-sectional views of a preferred embodiment of the present invention, in respective operating conditions; and
- Figure 3 is a perspective front view of a component part of the handle unit illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
- With reference to the accompanying Figures, the handle unit mainly comprises a hollow support frame 1, which is preferably made of plastic material and is adapted to be attached to the boot (or, anyway, to the bodywork) of a motor-vehicle in a per sé known (and not shown) manner. In this connection, the frame 1 may be integrated in a support body provided for the devices used to illuminate the number-plate of the vehicle, for instance of the kind described in EP-A-0 976 617.
- The hollow frame 1 has a cross-section in the shape of substantially a reverse U , with an open front (lower, in the example illustrated in Figures 1 and 2) edge, defined by a flanged edge 2, in correspondence of which there is provided a
peripheral shoulder 3. In correspondence of the opposite side 7, the frame 1 is provided with an aperture 4 and at least two juxtaposedribs 5 protruding towards the edge 2. On theseribs 5 there are provided respective, substantially semi-circular or semispherical saddles 6 that are aligned with each other along a longitudinal axis of the frame 1. - The support frame 1 in turn accommodates a box-
like member 9, which is attached on the rear side thereof by means of screws (not shown) passing for instance throughholes 8 provided in the wall 7 of the frame. - Similarly to the frame 1, the box-
like member 9 has a cross-section in the shape of substantially a reverse U , with an open front (lower, in the example being described) edge, defined by aflanged edge 10. On theopposite side 11, the box-like member 9 is provided with an aperture that is substantially aligned with the aperture 4 of the frame 1; through both these aperture there extends an actuating electromechanical switch 12 (mounted in a per sé known and not shown manner) adapted to energize an electric motor, an electromagnet, or the like, so as to unlock, i.e. release the lock of the boot of the motor-vehicle. Electric motor, lock and boot are of a generally known type and are not shown in the Figures. - In particular, the
switch 12 extends into the box-like member 9 with an actuation push-button 13 that is preferably capable of being operated through a per sé knownelastic pushing blade 14. - The
flanged edge 10 of the box-like member 9 is embraced by a correspondingperipheral lip 15 of anelastic membrane 16 that closes the open side of the same box-like member and, therefore, of the whole handle unit. In particular, theflanged edge 10 of the box-like member 9 keeps thelip 15 of themembrane 16 bearing against the correspondingperipheral shoulder 3 of the hollow support frame 1, so that the membrane is capable of tightly isolating the interior of the handle unit from the outside ambient. - The
membrane 16 is preferably made of a thermoplastic rubber material and is shaped so as to show a conformation hollowing out towards the interior of the handle unit. Furthermore, according to an aspect of the present invention, themembrane 16 forms a composite elastic shape-memory member with a lever-typerigid element 17 attached to the same membrane in correspondence of the inner surface thereof. - The
lever element 17 may be made for instance of a material such as ABS and is preferably provided integral, i.e. as a single-piece construction with saidmembrane 16 by means of a twin-injection or similar composite moulding technique. - The
lever element 17 carries integral therewith at least a pair ofbosses 18 provided in a side-by-side arrangement and adapted to cooperate with respective saddles 6 so as to constitute a corresponding fulcrum for thelever 17, which carries integral therewith also a pushingjut 19 adapted to cooperate with the push-button 13 of the electric switch via theblade 14. - The operation of the handle unit according to the present invention is fully clear at this point. Normally, the composite shape-
memory member member 18 is disengaged, i.e. released from theswitch 12. - When the closing lock of the boot has on the contrary to be released, i.e. unlocked, all it takes is to act manually from the outside on the
composite member lever 17 about itsfulcrum 18 until the pushingmember 19 eventually actuates the push-button 13 of the switch, so as this is illustrated in Figure 2. Such a movement is allowed for by the elastic deformation of the composite member, in particular of themembrane 16. - When the
composite member - This constructional simplification adds to the fact that the
membrane 16, the actuatinglever 17 and therespective fulcrum members 18 are provided in the form of asingle composite member - As a result, the sharp reduction in the number of discrete parts required to make a handle unit according to the present invention can be readily appreciated, along with the resulting simplification in the assembly of the same parts.
- It will be appreciated that the described handle unit may be subject to a number of modifications and variants without departing from the scope of the present invention.
- So, for instance, the automatic return of the component parts into the resting position thereof may be facilitated by at least an elastic boss and/or at least a tongue adapted to exert a mutual elastic pushing action between the box-
like member 9 and thecomposite member like member 9 and the composite member, in particular themembrane 16, respectively.
