Definitions
- This invention relates to foldable sheet assemblies.
- the foldable sheet of material is often provided with a stiff cover, such as card, for protecting the sheet when folded.
- a stiff cover such as card
- the front and back sections of the cover must be provided with some form of closure member, such as a co-operating tongue and aperture, an adhesive strip, a magnetic fastener, or a hook and fleece fastener, in order to keep the cover closed over the folded sheet.
- closure member such as a co-operating tongue and aperture, an adhesive strip, a magnetic fastener, or a hook and fleece fastener, in order to keep the cover closed over the folded sheet.
- These type of covers have the disadvantage that the closure member may come undone at an inopportune time, allowing the cover to open and the folded sheet to at least partially unfold, which may result in damage to the sheet.
- the closure member may break or deteriorate following a period of use, resulting in the cover not being closeable and thereby exposing the sheet to potential damage.
- a foldable sheet assembly comprising a sheet of material having a first set of concertina folds and cover means operable to releasably hold the sheet material folded, the cover means comprising a container having a mouth in which a drawer member is slidingly receivable, the sheet material being attached to the drawer member, the assembly characterised in that there are means for preventing the drawer member from being fully withdrawn from the container mouth comprising a pair of co-operating flanges.
- the sheet of material preferably additionally has a second set of concertina folds generally transverse to the first set of folds.
- a cut out shape may be provided in the front and correspondingly/or in the back face of the container along the open edge thereof to permit manual grasping of the folded sheet of material and/or the drawer member by a user to thereby facilitate withdrawal of the drawer and the folded sheet of material from the container.
- the drawer member desirably comprises a sheet of stiff material of substantially the same size and shape as each of the front and back faces of the container, such that the drawer member is closely receivable within the container.
- a tab member may be provided at or towards the leading edge of the drawer member for a user to manually grasp and pull in order to withdraw the drawer from the container.
- a ticket may be attached to one or each of the
- the means for preventing a pair of co-operating flanges comprises a first flange being provided on the drawer member and a second flange being provided on an internal surface of the container.
- the first flange is preferably provided across at least part of the drawer member, most preferably at or towards the rear edge of the drawer member.
- the first flange preferably extends generally outwardly from the drawer member, and most preferably at an angle to the plane of the drawer member.
- the first flange preferably partially overlies the drawer member.
- the first flange preferably extends from the in-use underside of the drawer member. Alternatively, the first flange may extend from the in-use upper side of the drawer member.
- the second flange is preferably provided across at least part of one internal surface of the container.
- the second flange may be provided across at least part of the internal surface of the back face of the container.
- the second flange may alternatively be provided across at least part of the internal face of the front face of the container.
- the second flange is preferably provided at or towards the open edge of the internal surface.
- the second flange preferably extends generally outwardly from, and most preferably at an angle to, the internal surface of the container.
- the second flange preferably partially overlies the said internal surface.
- the first and second flanges desirably extend in generally opposite directions to one another, so that as the drawer member is withdrawn from the container the first and second flanges are brought together and come into co-operative engagement with one another to thereby prevent the complete withdrawal of the drawer member from the container.
- one flange is so located that at least part of the one flange comes into engagement with at least part of the other flange as the drawer member is withdrawn from the container.
- one or each flange is generally rectangular in shape.
- one or each flange may be substantially arc shaped.
- a flange may comprise a plurality of flange parts arranged in a spaced relationship across the surface from which the flange extends.
- the first or second flange comprise a plurality of flange parts arranged in a spaced relationship across the container or drawer surface from which that flange extends.
- At least one of the first or second flanges incorporates a cleave about which parts of that flange pivot to lift that flange from a juxtaposed position next to an adjacent surface of the drawer member or container surface particularly when the container is squeezed.
- At least one of the first or second flanges has a tapered shape to facilitate interactive catchment with the other flange to prevent full withdrawal of the drawer member from the container mouth.
- the invention provides foldable sheet assembly 10,50,60,70,80,90,100,110,120,130,140,160,170,180,190,200,210 having a sheet of material 12 and cover means 14 operable to releasably hold the sheet of material folded.
- the cover means 14 comprises a container 16 having a mouth 36 in which a drawer member 18 is slidingly receivable.
- the sheet of material 12 in this example, comprises a sheet of paper.
- the sheet of paper has a first set of concertina folds 20 (Fig. 5) and a second set of concertina folds 22.
- the second set of folds 22 extend generally transversely across the first set of folds 20.
- the first set of folds 20 comprises six folds and the second set of folds 22 comprises two folds.
- the first set of folds 20 and the second set of folds 22 together define a plurality of sections 24 of the sheet of material 12.
- the sheet of material 12 is attached to the drawer member 18 at its top left hand section, as shown in Figures 5 and 6.
- the container 16 has a generally rectangular envelope like shape, and has a front face 26, a back face 28, two long sides 30, 32 and two shorter sides 34, 36.
- the container mouth is provided in one short side 36, and extends across the full length and height of this short side 36.
- the container mouth may be provided in one long side 30.
- Each closed side 30, 32, 34 of the container 16 is, in this example, formed by a double crease.
- the container 16 is constructed from a single net, as shown in Fig. 7.
- a tab 38 is provided on the leading edge of the drawer 18.
- the tab 38 is intended to be manually grasped and pulled by a user, to facilitate withdrawal of the drawer 18 from the container 16.
- the foldable sheet assembly 10 additionally includes means for preventing the drawer 18 from being fully withdrawn from the container mouth 36.
- the said means takes the form of complementary flanges 40, 42 provided respectively on the container 16 and the drawer 18, as shown in Figs. 8 to 13.
- the first flange 40 is provided along the open edge of the back cover 28 of the container 16.
- the flange 40 extends away from the internal surface of the back cover 28 and is directed generally towards the inside of the container 16.
- the flange 40 is formed as a single piece with the back cover 28 of the container 16. As shown in Fig. 7, the flange 40 extends across the full width of the open short side 36 of the container 16.
- the flange 40 can be generally rectangular in shape, having square edges.
- a cleave 200 is provided in the flange 40 so that this flange 40 does not flatten to be juxtaposed with the internal surface of the cover but remains proud.
- the cleave 200 allows respective sides of the flange 40 to pivot about the cleave 200 and its ends. Thus, these sides resist deformation into a juxtaposed 'flat' configuration with the internal surface of the cover 28 when the container is squeezed inwardly from the sides.
- the second flange 42 extends generally downwardly from the in-use underside of the drawer member 18.
- the flange 42 is angled generally towards the leading edge of the drawer member 18.
- flange 40 similarly extends across the full width of the drawer member 18.
- the flange 42 can also of a generally rectangular shape but normally has a tongue-like taper to interaction with the first flange 40.
- a tongue-like taper ensures the flange 42 will catch or engage the first flange 40 in the middle which has particular benefits when that flange has a cleave 200 to break up compression of first flange 40 to a juxtaposed position next to the cover 28.
- the flange 42 is formed as a single piece with the drawer member 18, and is separated from the drawer member 18 by a crease 46.
- flange 48, 49 take the form of L-shaped sections.
- the flange 48 provided on the container 16 comprises a first part 48a and a second part 48b.
- the first part 48a of the flange 48 extends upwardly away from the internal surface of the back face 28 of the container 16.
- the second part 48b of the flange 48 extends generally away from the free end of the first part 48a, generally at right angles to the first part 48a, and hence substantially parallel to the back face 28 of the container 16.
- the flange 49 on the drawer 18 similarly comprises two parts 49a and 49b.
- the first part 49a extends downwardly from the in-use underside of the drawer 18.
- the second part 49b extends generally outwardly from the free end of the first part 49a, at substantially right angles thereto, and is thus substantially parallel to the drawer 18. As shown in Fig. 12 and 13, as the drawer 18 is withdrawn from the container 16, the flanges 48, 49, come into co-operative engagement with one another, thereby preventing the complete withdrawal of the drawer 18 from the container mouth 36.
- the foldable sheet assembly 10 is constructed as follows.
- the container 16 and the drawer 18 are constructed separately.
- the sheet of material 12 is folded with two sets of concertina folds 20, 22 and the folded sheet 12 is then attached to the in-use upper surface of the drawer 18.
- the drawer 18 and the folded sheet 12 are then slidingly located into the container 16, through the container mouth 36, the flanges 40, 42, 48, 49 freely sliding across one another.
- the drawer 18 may only be partially withdrawn from the container, due to the co-operative engagement of the flanges 40, 42, 48, 49. This prevents the drawer 18, and the folded sheet 12, from becoming detached from the container 16.
