Definitions

  • the invention relates to a pneumatic hammer having a small footprint.
  • Pneumatic one-shot hammers are well known in the art.
  • the body typically comprises an inner cylinder and an outer shell between which there is an air reserve chamber.
  • a piston or a pair of spaced pistons mounted on an axial shaft whose front end forms the striker can move in the cylinder under the effect of compressed air stored in the chamber.
  • the chamber is itself placed in communication with a source of compressed air, when the trigger is actuated, by a pipe connecting a connection provided on the hammer to said source of compressed air.
  • the reserve of air between the cylinder and the envelope must have a volume large enough for the hammer to work well.
  • the one-shot pneumatic hammer is a tool that has been designed for this purpose. This tool is used to hit the fasteners holding plastic parts (shields, door bins ...) present in cars. By a simple percussion it allows to release the plastic parts virgin of any other material.
  • the dismantling tools are modeled and the car design incorporates the space that will be needed for the tool to be used.
  • the constraints it imposes today during the design are important given the size of the tool.
  • the present invention aims to satisfy this need.
  • the present invention relates to a pneumatic hammer comprising a single body comprising a cylinder and a casing surrounding the cylinder and leaving between them a first air chamber, a hollow handle integral with said body and housing a second air chamber communicating with the first, at least one piston mounted on an axial shaft whose front end forms the striker and can move in the cylinder under the effect of compressed air stored in the air chambers, and means for actuating the hammer controlled by a trigger, said hammer being connected to a flexible hose connecting one of said chambers to a source of compressed air, characterized in that the rear part of the hammer is formed by the hollow handle whose internal cavity forms a second air chamber communicating with the first air chamber.
  • the handle is mounted at the rear of the body.
  • the handle has, seen from the side, the general shape of an inverted U, one of whose branches is secured to a rear face of the body.
  • the hose connects the second air chamber to the source of compressed air.
  • the envelope surrounding the rear portion of the cylinder has a cross section decreasing from the back to the front of the hammer.
  • the necessarily reduced volume of the first air chamber is compensated, resulting from the fact that the envelope does not extend around the anterior part of the cylinder, by the second air chamber formed in the handle, on the one hand, and by the additional air chamber in the oversized end section of the hose, on the other hand.
  • the front part of the cylinder is no longer surrounded by an envelope, the front portion of the hammer is much less bulky than in the case where the entire cylinder is surrounded by an envelope as in the hammers of the art prior.
  • the figure 1 illustrates a pneumatic hammer of known type marketed by the American company PNEUTEK.
  • This hammer comprises a body 1 comprising a cylinder 2 and an outer casing 3 surrounding the cylinder and leaving between them an air chamber 4.
  • a pair of pistons 5, 6 secured on a shaft 7 of which anterior end 8, itself slidably mounted in a nose 9, forms the striker.
  • the hammer may be connected by the connector 10 to a flexible hose 11 connected to a source of compressed air (not shown) so as to continuously supply compressed air to the chamber 4.
  • the hammer comprises, in addition, a handle 12 and a trigger 13 whose pressing controls the actuation of the hammer, that is to say the rapid forward movement of the pair of pistons and, therefore, the striking of the striker. The release of this trigger causes the displacement in the opposite direction of the piston and, therefore, the return of the firing pin.
  • Such a hammer is bulky and heavy.
  • the figure 2 illustrates a hammer according to the present invention.
  • the outer shell 3 surrounds only the rear portion 2b of the cylinder 2 and leaves bare the front portion 2a of the cylinder, which is about 0.5 times the total length of said cylinder.
  • the envelope 3 surrounding the rear portion is profiled, having a cross section decreasing from the rear to the front of the hammer.
  • the rear part of the hammer is formed by a hollow handle 22 whose internal cavity forms a second air chamber 23 communicating with the chamber 4 by passages 24.
  • the handle 22 has, from the side, the general shape of an inverted U and is secured to the rear face of the body 1 by one branches of the U, as shown. This arrangement at the rear of the handle helps to clear the front of the hammer and, therefore, increases its ability to penetrate areas of poor accessibility.
  • the hammer also has a trigger 25 for controlling its operation.
  • Said trigger 25 is fixed inside the U formed by the handle 22, on the wall opposite to the gripping zone.
  • the handle 22 is, moreover, connected to its base, by means of a screw connection 26, to a flexible hose 27 which can be connected to a source of compressed air (not shown).
  • This flexible pipe 27 has the particularity of having a terminal section 28 adjacent to the handle 22, of oversized cross section relative to the section of the remainder of the pipe.
  • the oversized terminal section of the flexible pipe may have an internal diameter of 10 to 30 mm while, over the rest of its length, the pipe conventionally has an internal diameter of 5 to 10 mm.
  • the length of the oversized terminal section may be, for example, 50 to 150 mm.
  • This oversized section 28 forms an additional air chamber 29 immediately adjacent and communicating with the chamber 23.
  • the air chambers 23 and 29 serve to compensate for the reduced volume of the chamber 4 and allow satisfactory operation of the hammer. Room 23 would be insufficient on its own to
  • the invention makes it possible to produce a lighter hammer and especially much less bulky than the hammers of the prior art, which allows to use it in places that would be inaccessible to the latter.
