Description

The invention relates to an ink cartridge for an inkjet printer, a mechanical Holder for the ink cartridge, a printhead with a receptacle and a cartridge and printhead assembly.

A cartridge for an ink jet printer has an ink chamber as essential elements and an outlet port for connection to the printhead of the printer. The filled cartridge is by means of a needle, a spike, a neck or other tubular member connected to the ink supply to the print head.

This is described, for example, in EP 1 022 144 A1, which discloses an ink tank for Storing ink describes a closed container with an opening on one End includes. The opening is sealed by a porous element that has an affinity for ink and generates a negative pressure in the container. The porous element On one side it is in contact with the ink in the container and forms a side wall or a bottom wall of the closed container.

Die Enden des Tintenführungselements stehen in Kontakt mit den meniskusbildenden Elementen.US 6,082,852 describes a recording apparatus with a printhead and an ink tank, which is an ink chamber having an ink storage element and an ink supply port having. The ink supply port has a meniscus-forming one Element that communicates with the ink storage element. The printhead includes an ink supply port for receiving ink from the ink tank and another meniscus-forming element. When the ink tank is attached to the printhead is, the ink supply port is connected to the ink supply port. An ink guide member is located at the location where the ink supply port connected to the ink supply port. The ends of the ink guide element are in contact with the meniscus-forming elements.

In an attempt to reduce the dripping of ink when replacing an ink cartridge avoid, according to US 6,033,063 an ink cartridge is proposed, which as Link to the printer a peripheral element with inserted porous material having. So that the porous material of the connecting element not with the actual Ink chamber is in contact, an intermediate ink chamber is provided, which an ink guide member communicates with the main ink chamber. This known Ink cartridge has the disadvantage of a complex structure, as there are definitely two ink chambers required are.

The object of the invention is therefore, a cartridge and an associated receptacle or To specify a printhead simple design, by the decoupling of the ink cartridge collected dripping ink and removed with the next cartridge used can be to make sure that a contamination of printer, user and / or printer environment is largely avoided.

According to the invention this object is achieved by an ink cartridge according to claim 1 or a receptacle according to claim 11, a printhead according to claim 15 and a printhead unit according to claim 16.

The ink cartridge according to the invention has an ink chamber with an outlet opening for connection to a printhead, with a porous material around the outlet extends at least along a portion of the circumference thereof. The porous one Material is thus located outside of the ink path through which the ink flows when the cartridge is inserted into a corresponding holder or printhead is. A contact of the porous material with the interior of the ink chamber is thus not mandatory; a complicated construction with intermediate ink chamber is superfluous yourself.

When inserting the ink cartridge in a printhead, the porous material against a corresponding contact surface pressed on the connection point of the print head. To this This will allow ink to be removed when removing the previous cartridge Junction is dropped, pick up and transported away.

If in the context of the invention of "printhead 'is mentioned, so it may be a non-permanent print head or even an adapter or a receptacle or a tubing system that supplies ink to the printhead. It can therefore also a Interface between the ink cartridge and the actual printhead meant to be communicates with the printhead.

The porous material should preferably be compressible, since in this way a particular good suction when removing the cartridge is achieved. When putting on a new cartridge, the porous material between the contact surface of the joint compressed the printhead and the cartridge wall. During the subsequent removal The cartridge expands the compressed porous material, causing the pores be enlarged and there is an increased suction volume.

The porous material may be applied either immediately adjacent to the outlet opening be, or at some distance from it. The concrete one Choice of the arrangement of the porous material is dependent on the geometry of the Joint between printhead and ink cartridge. Below is to some concrete examples in more detail.

According to a preferred embodiment, the porous material extends along the entire circumference of the outlet opening. In other words, the porous material forms one "Suction ring" around the outlet opening. This suction ring does not necessarily have to be circular Rather, he can, depending on the design of the outlet, for example have a square outline. In any case, by the closed Frame around the outlet ensures that the whole in this area on the Absorbing surface ink is absorbed.

In conventional ink cartridges, the outlet port is often through a nozzle limited. In this case, it is advantageous if the porous material adjacent to the Spigot extends. The nozzle is generally used to a corresponding tubular To receive connection element of a print head or adapter. This is going to be general inserted into the neck so that the outer surface of the tubular element snugly against the inner surface of the nozzle, ensuring an airtight connection becomes. A seal can also be done by sealing elements in the nozzle. The porous material extending outside the nozzle adjacent thereto thus absorbing the ink when separating the tubular member and the neck on the contact surface of the tubular element, which for example in shape a radial projection may be formed, drips.

Particularly preferred is an embodiment in which the porous material in essentially annular surrounds the neck and immediately adjacent to the Outer wall extends. In this case, namely the nozzle wall forms a support for the porous material, which extends in the same direction as the nozzle. This will cause twisting or buckling of the porous material during handling the cartridge avoided. In this context, it should be noted that the porous material in this case does not necessarily form a closed ring.

To an empty cartridge, which has been decoupled from the suction tube of the printhead, then to be able to lay down, without the base is soiled, it is advantageous when the nozzle projects beyond the porous material. This means that the wall of the neck further forward, i. away from the ink chamber, protrudes as the porous material at This embodiment also prevents a user who removes the cartridge from below grasps, gets in contact with the porous material and thereby becomes soiled with ink. However, for this advantageous embodiment, it is necessary that the associated tubular member of the connecting part of the receptacle or the printhead is designed accordingly. For example, an embodiment is conceivable in which on the contact surface of the tubular element of the print head also a porous Material is attached, which protrudes so far that it with the porous element of the ink cartridge Connects when the ink cartridge is connected to the printhead.

Increasing the safety of handling a deflated cartridge also serves to when a web is formed around the outlet opening and spaced therefrom. This web serves as a limitation and stabilization of the porous material to the outside as well as its fixation. This also ensures that a user does not accidentally come into contact with the ink stored in the porous material. If in addition to the bridge also a nozzle is present, the porous material be used directly between the nozzle and bridge, so that a stabilization and a protection of the porous material from inside and outside is ensured. By suitable Choice of the distance between nozzle and web as well as the thickness of the porous material can be a clamping connection between the two elements and the porous material be realized so that a secure hold of the porous material is ensured. About that Of course, there is also the possibility of the porous material, for example by means of gluing or to fix melt.

The thickness of the porous material can be selected as needed. Under "thickness" of the Porous material is here to understand the thickness of the ring, which is the porous material forms. As a reasonable compromise between material costs and reliability has a thickness of about 1 mm to 5 mm proved. Also the height of the ring, i.e. its dimension parallel to the neck, is preferably 1 mm to 5 mm.

Preferably, the porous material is releasably attached to a wall of the ink cartridge. Such a releasable connection, for example, the already mentioned clamp connection between nozzle and outer bar dar. The advantage of releasable attachment of the porous Materials is that it can be easily replaced when it is is a reusable or refillable ink cartridge.

As a porous material, all sponges are suitable for liquid storage, in particular Ink storage, are used, fiber bundles of high capillarity, pressed Cellulose wadding. In addition, capillary structures are also suitable, which can be sprayed, Microforming, embossing or about sintering process produced be and either as a separate component or directly as the area of the cartridge wall Being able to be educated. Essential here is a sufficient absorbency, or capillary action, of the porous material.

A printhead or a recording, the / for the interaction with a The ink cartridge according to the invention is suitable, has a tubular connecting element for connecting the printhead with an ink cartridge, wherein on the outer circumference of the tubular connecting element protrudes outward and projecting on the projection on the connecting side of the tubular member is a porous Material is located, at least partially along the outer circumference of the tubular Connecting element extends. The porous material of the printhead or printhead adapter is to be arranged so that it is in contact with the porous material of the ink cartridge comes when the ink cartridge is connected to the printhead. When at Remove a deflated ink cartridge, the tubular connection element of the print head and the outlet port of the ink cartridge are separated from each other, and ink Run on the projection of the printhead, so this is of the porous material of the Printhead sucked up. When inserting the next cartridge, the porous material passes the same with the soaked porous material of the printhead and picks up a part of the ink, so that this next time you replace the ink cartridge can be removed. In this context, it is advantageous if the porous Material on the projection of the printhead has a smaller capillarity than that porous material at the ink outlet of the cartridge. The capillary drops the ink the porous material on the projection into the porous material on the ink cartridge rearranged.

According to a preferred embodiment, the projection extends at an angle from about 3 ° to 20 ° to the radial direction away from the connection side. With others Words, the projection is not perpendicular to the tubular part, but instead has a slight inclination towards the outer edge. In this way, the Ink in the middle, i. in the region of the tubular connecting element, on the Projection drips, guided by gravity in the direction of the porous element to there to be sucked up.

Preferably, the projection of the printhead according to the invention is on the connection side essentially completely covered with the porous material. The expression "substantially complete" in this context means that only at the Place, with the ink cartridge inserted, the nozzle or other element of the ink cartridge comes into contact with the projection, a recess of the porous material is present. In this way it is ensured that the nozzle is not saturated with the porous material comes into contact and thus can not be contaminated.

A particularly preferred combination results when the ink cartridge according to the invention and the printhead according to the invention or a corresponding adapter together be used.

In Fig. 1, a conventional ink cartridge is shown, in its entirety with the Reference numeral 1 is indicated. The same ink cartridge is in Fig. 2 in cross section shown. Inside the ink cartridge 1 is an ink chamber 2, which may include a sponge, indicated in the figure by the close hatching is done. It is a so-called sponge ink cartridge, as they is often used. The ink supply is stored in the sponge.

The housing of the cartridge 1 is preferably made of plastic. In the bottom of the cartridge There is a drainage system, by means of which the ink is removed from the sponge can be. For this purpose, there is an outlet opening 3 at the bottom of the housing, which is limited in the present embodiment by a nozzle 5. This Cartridge-side nozzle 5 forms the interface to the printer-side ink system. at this may be a non-permanent printhead, an adapter, a holder or a tubing system that supplies the ink to the printhead.

The interface between the ink cartridge and the ink system of the printer is in Fig. 3 shown. The print head or the hose system is with a tubular Connection element 7 is equipped, which has an outwardly projecting projection 8. The elements 7 and 8 are indicated in the figure by the narrow hatching. These elements come with the insertion of an ink cartridge with the nozzle 5 of the same in touch. When decoupling the two parts of ink is on the projection 8 of the tubular Terminal element 7 drip and after repeated cartridge change accumulate there. The triangular elevations 10 shown here in cross section Although the projection 8 prevent dripping of the ink in the printer, but only until to a certain degree.

In Fig. 4 the same connection geometry between the printer and the cartridge is shown, wherein However, on the cartridge 1, a porous material 4 is applied. The porous material 4 is clamped annularly between the nozzle and web 6 here. In this embodiment stands the porous material 4 at the bottom before, so that it with attached cartridge with the projection 8 comes into contact. The porous material 4 can thus be in the projection pick up accumulated ink. Although in the embodiment shown in Fig. 4 the projection radially at a right angle to the tubular connecting element extends, it may also slightly inclined according to a variant, i. under a be formed small angle to this vertical.

According to a further embodiment, which is shown in Fig. 5, the porous material 4 set back behind the edge of the nozzle. So that the porous material still in contact comes with the projection 8 of the tubular connecting element 7 is in this embodiment also provided the projection 8 with a porous material, which here with designated by the reference numeral 9. This porous material 9 forms a suction ring around the tubular connecting element 7 around. The dripping ink is first stored by this suction ring of porous material 9. When inserting a cartridge 1 this second suction ring of porous material 9 passes with the first suction ring of porous Material 4 of the ink cartridge in contact. Since the porous material 9 on the projection 8 has a smaller capillarity than the porous material 4 on the cartridge nozzle, the Redirected ink in contact of the two suction rings in the porous material 4 of the ink cartridge 1 and can be removed during cartridge removal.

In addition to an annular arrangement of the porous materials 4 and 9, all others Arrangements and geometries are possible that act in the same way. The ring shape has the particular advantage that with little material expenditure, the entire extent of tubular terminal member, and the outlet port 3 of the ink cartridge 1, detected becomes. It is also possible that the porous material 4 is set back even further than it in Fig. 5 is shown. In this case, care must be taken that neither the neck 5 still the web 6 come into contact with the porous material 9 on the projection 8, when the cartridge is inserted. In this meadow, the dripped ink flows automatically in the direction of the porous material 4 of the ink cartridge.
