Description
The present invention relates to an implant for cranioplasty.
The cranial roof must be opened during surgery on the brain (cranioectomy). After the operation, if necessary, but also at a certain time interval after the operation (e.g. after cerebral edema has subsided), the defect in the skull bone must be closed. Either polymer-based bone cements or metal plastics, e.g. made of gold or titanium.
The disadvantage here is that, in addition to the foreign body reaction, there is a risk of thermal damage to the patient's tissue due to exothermic reactions when the bone cements harden. In addition, unwanted local and / or systemic side effects can be caused by released monomers or oligomers.
Metallic implants remain in the implant site for life and lead to artefacts in imaging during diagnostic examinations such as X-rays. A diagnosis of the healing success after the operation is therefore only possible to a limited extent. In the case of metallic implants, the processing and adaptation to the surgical wound as good as not possible as part of the primary surgery; they must be implanted in a second operation.
The object of the present invention is to provide a mechanically stable implant for cranioplasty which does not have the disadvantages mentioned above and which can be fixed sufficiently firmly, wherein an adaptation of the implant to the defect should be possible with the conventional surgical instruments.
This problem is solved by a cranium implant with the features of claim 1.
The implant according to the invention eliminates the disadvantages mentioned at the outset and does not damage the implant site and does not influence imaging processes. The implant can be dismantled over a longer period of time and replaced by the body's own tissue without causing damage to the implant site by degradation products.
Advantageous embodiments of the invention are described in the subclaims.
The implant can be shaped as follows according to the cranioectomy:
Bohrungen aufweisen.- polygonal, circular, ellipsoid - planar, curved To fix the implant to the body's own skull bone, the implant can have fixation aids such as holes.
A particular advantage of the implant according to the invention is given by the material used, which is not a foreign body due to its biological origin. The implant made of bone material is converted into the body's own tissue during healing.
Due to the different sizes and shapes of the implant, it can also be used for other surgical measures such as e.g. Fixation and flattening of bone fragments after fractures or vertebral bodies possible.
Further advantageous embodiments of the cranium implant according to the present invention are specified in the description, the drawing and the subclaims.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the material of the implant consists of preserved and sterile bone material of human or animal origin, in particular of preserved and sterile bone material of bovine, porcine or equine origin.
The bone material can consist of cancellous, cortical, but preferably compact bone or of the resulting composite. A suitable allogeneic or xenogeneic bone material is processed as material for the implant according to the present invention such that it is preserved, storable and sterile and can be used as intended. The bone material can be preserved, for example, by freeze-drying. However, the bone material is preferably produced by solvent dehydration of collagen-containing bone material by means of an organic water-miscible solvent, for example methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone or mixtures of these solvents. The preservation and sterilization of the bone material by this method is also the subject of the patent DE 29 06 650, the content of which is incorporated by reference into the disclosure of the present application.
This process is used for the production of preserved grafts and enables dehydration and exposure until the fine structure of the fibril of the collagenous bone material, so that the processed bone material has a histologically identical structure to that of natural bone and thus maintains the desired properties of the collagenous bone material stay. This method of solvent dehydration also has the advantage that, compared to freeze-drying, a significantly lower outlay on equipment is required.
Furthermore, the bone material can also be solvent dehydrated from collagen-containing bone material with subsequent terminal sterilization, in particular by irradiation with gamma or electrons. electron beams, but also be produced by ethylene oxide or thermal processes.
Alternatively, the bone material can be generated by aseptic processing of collagenous bone material without terminal sterilization.
The present invention is described below purely by way of example using an exemplary embodiment of a cranium implant according to the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings:
