- step 112 sets the index value NC of the cylinders to be switched off to zero, since none Cylinder will be shut off when the engine 12 is normal is operated.
- step 112 also sets the number Injection events NF to be switched off for all cylinders Zero and sets the cylinder factor CF to 1 for all cylinders, and step 114 enables a normal mode of operation (Cylinder deactivation deactivated).
- the normal operating mode includes several common engine operating modes including one Startup mode 115, in which fuel is supplied to all cylinders is ended, as in the case of deceleration of the engine 12.
- the cylinder shutdown algorithm 200 is on Result of steps 106 and 110 activated when the Engine speed in a range from about 700 to 1900 rpm lies, but these speeds are purely exemplary are and can be changed without the invention departing.
- algorithm 200 goes to step 202 occurred whenever algorithm 100 step 116 executes and the cylinder deactivation is activated.
- these values are set within the algorithm 200, reduced or increased and these changed values continue be set and used by algorithm 200 until the Algorithm 100 in turn deactivates cylinder deactivation and the values are reinitialized by step 112.
- Step 204 compares NF (N) to zero and if NF (N) does not is zero (i.e. that cylinder N was deactivated) step 210 decreases the count NF (N) by 1 and step 212 sets CF (N) to zero (to cause the Nth cylinder is switched off).
- NF (N) is not equal to zero, i.e. that the Nth cylinder less than CO or 50 times, for example has been turned off and step 214 directs the subroutine Step 222 so that the Nth cylinder due to Step 212 will be switched off.
- NF (N) is zero in step 214 is, i.e. the Nth cylinder indicates the maximum number allowed Paint, CO, has been turned off, and step 214 the subroutine to step 216, which decrements NC by 1 (by to indicate that the number of cylinders to be deactivated is reduced is set) and CF (N) to 1, so that the Nth cylinder during the next firing order is ignited (not switched off) and then returns the subroutine via step 222.
- step 206 if NF (N) is zero (i.e. if the Nth cylinder is not switched off will be) EA equal to a calculated engine acceleration value set and step 208 compares EA to one Acceleration limit AT.
- EA NF (N) is zero (i.e. if the Nth cylinder is not switched off will be)

- step 208 Acceleration limit AT
- EA in step 208 is not greater than AT
- Step 218 compares the number of cylinders which are turned off, NC, with a maximum number of MNC, like for example half of the total number of cylinders of the Motors 12. If NC is not less than MNC in step 218, this means that no additional cylinder has to be switched off and the algorithm is directed to step 222. If in Step 218 NC is less than MNC, it means that additional cylinders can be switched off and the The algorithm is directed to step 220.
- Step 220 sets the Index value NF (N) is CO, the number of times (for example 50) a cylinder should be turned off after a misfire has been determined. Step 220 also reduces NC by 1 (to indicate that another cylinder is switched off will) and sets CF (N) equal to zero, making the cylinder N during the next firing order of cylinders 26-36 will be switched off.
- control unit 40 determines whether a particular cylinder or certain cylinders misfire and switch only those Cylinders that misfire, at most half of the Cylinder is deactivated. As a result, this system switches not automatically a predetermined, selected group of Cylinders, but instead determines which cylinder (s) really misfired by the amount of acceleration of the Crankshaft is measured and only switches the fuel supply to the misfiring cylinders.
- the acceleration and the Misfire is caused by the use of a crankshaft sensor 44 and the measurement of the time between the pulses of the Crankshaft sensor 44 determined. Once it was determined that a particular cylinder does not ignite, the cylinder becomes for a certain number of firing sequences switched off. After Number of firing sequences becomes the normal one in the cylinder Amount of fuel injected (steps 214, 216 and 222).

In compression ignition engines, if one or more Do not ignite the fuel through the exhaust system of the cylinder Engine ejected, the exhaust gases changing in such a way that a phenomenon known as "white smoke" occurs. As Result of stricter government and consumer requirements regarding fuel consumption, behavior and emissions is one Reduction of this white smoke is desirable.
A system for reducing this phenomenon is described in US-A-6,009,856 described. This document discloses a system for Switching off cylinders of a compression ignition engine with electrical injection units. The system has one electronic control unit on what sensor signals too Receives engine parameters. Depending on certain States of these sensor signals deactivate the electronic Control unit a predetermined number (e.g. the Half) of electronic injection units.
The problem underlying the invention is seen in that in known systems only a predetermined group of Cylinders can be turned off regardless of whether effectively ignite individual cylinders of this group or not. This requires additional amounts of fuel to be added other cylinders are delivered, which are not deactivated were used to increase their performance for a predetermined period of time increase so that the deactivated cylinders are balanced become.
According to the invention, this problem is solved by the teaching of
A fuel delivery control system will become available the fuel supply to an engine with a Controls a plurality of cylinders.
A fuel
Eine auf einem Mikroprozessor basierende Motorsteuereinheit
(ECU) 40 liefert Steuersignale zu der Kraftstoffzufuhreinheit
An engine control unit based on a microprocessor

Die Motorsteuereinheit 40 erzeugt in Abhängigkeit von einem
Kühlmitteltemperatursignal eines Kühlmitteltemperatursensors
42, einem Kurbelwellenstellungssignal eines Kurbelwellensensors
44, einem Einlasslufttemperatursignal eines Einlasslufttemperatursensors
46 und einem Kraftstofftemperatursignal eines
Kraftstofftemperatursensors 48 Steuersignale.
The
According to the present invention, the
Kurbelwellensensors 44 gesetzt. The quantity of fuel to be supplied is preferably determined by the
The normal controller or operating mode can preferably be as
the normal engine governor-controlled operating state of the
abzuweichen. If one of these conditions does not exist,
With reference to FIG. 3,
Then in
Beschleunigungsgrenzwert AT.
Referring again to
Schritt 218.Then, if EA is larger than that in
Step 218 compares the number of cylinders which
are turned off, NC, with a maximum number of MNC, like
for example half of the total number of cylinders of the
Zylindern ab, sondern ermittelt stattdessen, welche(r) Zylinder
Thus,
