  • the carton and strap continue to move downstream, the lugs 32 are raised out of engagement with the carton and strap as the frame 34 is caused to be moved upwards by the cam track 50 and follower.
  • the aforementioned application process is desirable, because the strap is applied to the carton in a positive and controlled manner, thereby minimising the chance of the strap being applied incorrectly or to the wrong location.
  • the position of the securing point or weld is known throughout the forming and application process so that the weld can be positioned at a particular preferred location and not, for example along the handle part of the strap. In this embodiment, the weld would preferably be positioned along a side wall of the carton.
  • the plunger unit 22 As the carton moves downstream the plunger unit 22 is raised and returns to the strap forming station 20.
  • the carton 8 and strap 9 continue downstream and pass through a plurality of air dryers: the temperature of the air dryers is regulated by a user, so that the strap is shrunk around the pack.

  • the packaging operation throughout the machine is controlled by a computer programme which controls the speed of the upper and lower sprocket sets and the throughput of the straps to ensure the straps are aligned with the carton.

  • the upstream end of the carton conveyor preferably includes carton infeed means 24 which in this embodiment comprises a pair of opposed belt sets 38.

  • the positions and speeds of the devices can be input manually or a specific pre-written programme can be loaded into the central processor for control of the packaging machine. Also for the controlled change over for the machine from one carton type or size to another can be the result of a pre-written programme or manual input signal.
  • the machine is readily adjustable to accommodate a wide range of carton sizes without undue time being taken to adapt the machine from running one size of carton to running a different size of carton.

  • the invention may be used with machines for packaging cans, paperboard bricks and other containers into cartons.
  • the present invention is able to process cartons comprising numerous configurations of groups of articles covering a wide range of carton size and shape without undue time being spent in adjusting the apparatus.

Claims (4)

  1. Appareil pour former une bande sans fin à partir d'un approvisionnement (16) en matériau de ruban (6), l'appareil comprenant des premiers moyens d'alimentation (82, 84, 88) pour prélever de façon continue le matériau de ruban de l'approvisionnement, une station de retenue (18) où une quantité en surplus de matériau de ruban peut être retenue dans une zone de stockage, des seconds moyens d'alimentation (93, 95, 100) pour tirer de façon intermittente une longueur prédéterminée de matériau de ruban de la zone de stockage et alimenter cette longueur dans un moyen d'enroulement en boucle de ruban (12) par lequel ladite longueur de matériau de ruban peut être conformée en une bande sans fin et déconnectée du matériau de ruban qui suit immédiatement ladite longueur prédéterminée, caractérisé en ce qu'il comprend des moyens de commande pour coordonner la vitesse d'alimentation dudit matériau de ruban dans la station de retenue par les premier moyens d'alimentation et la longueur désirée de matériau de ruban tirée à partir de la station de retenue par les second moyens d'alimentation.
  2. Appareil selon la revendication 1, caractérisé en ce que la station de retenue (18) comprend des moyens capteurs (86) pour détecter une insuffisance de matériau de ruban présent et pour informer les moyens de commande en conséquence de façon que la station de retenue est remplie à nouveau avec une quantité appropriée de matériau de ruban.
  3. Appareil selon la revendication 1 ou 2, caractérisé en ce que les moyens de commande sont opérationnels pour :
    a. introduire une extrémité avant du matériau de ruban dans des moyens de serrage de ruban (44) et engager les moyens de serrage pour saisir l'extrémité avant du ruban ;
    b. fournir une longueur mesurée de matériau de ruban auxdits second moyens d'alimentation ;
    c. faire pivoter les moyens de serrage sur 360° pour former une boucle de matériau de ruban;
    d. fixer une extrémité avant du ruban sur la longueur du ruban de façon à former un bande sans fin;
    e. couper le ruban à une fin de bande ;
    f. amener des seconds moyens de serrage (27) en position d'engagement avec la bande sans fin ; et
    g. relâcher les premier moyens de serrage et éjecter la bande sans fin pour qu'elle soit déplacée en avant par les second moyens de serrage.
  4. Machine d'emballage pour former et appliquer des bandes de portage à des cartons, ladite machine comprenant un appareil selon une des revendications 1 à 3, des moyens de convoyage (27, 28) pour convoyer chaque bande sans fin formée par lesdits moyen de formation de ruban, des moyens de convoyage de carton (38, 42) pour alimenter des cartons à équiper avec lesdites bandes sans fin, des moyens applicateur (22) appliquant des bandes sans fin individuelle à des cartons successifs, et d'autres moyens de convoyage (46, 48) pour convoyer les cartons terminés de la machine.
