Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an arrangement for independent control a number n of light emitting diodes (LEDs).
Batteriebetrieb scheidet oftmals wegen der hohen Stromaufnahme der Anzeigeeinrichtung aus.LEDs used in display devices need for a clearly visible indication a current between approx. 1mA and 50mA at a forward voltage of 1.5..2V. If several such LED display elements are required, e.g. to realize a Bargraph display, a correspondingly large power supply unit must be provided become. Battery operation is often discontinued due to the high power consumption of the display device out.
Below is the prior art using the example of the integrated shown in FIG. 4 National Semiconductor's LM3914 / LM3915 Dot / Bar Display Driver explained.
- Operation of the control circuit as a dot display (only one LED is activated at a time).
- Use of energy-saving LEDs with high efficiency.
- Use of so-called "flasher circuits", in which the LEDs are operated with very short current pulses of high amperage with a low mean value (for example by means of the LM3909 module from NS).
The invention has for its object an arrangement for controlling a Specify the number n of LEDs that also form one when using standard LEDs comparatively low power consumption.

According to the invention, a basic series connection is used instead of a parallel connection
of the LEDs to be controlled. This is due to the relatively minor
Forward voltage of the LEDs possible. The maximum number n of in series too
switching LEDs depends on the level of the available supply voltage
from. The nodes of the LEDs connected in series are also with
connected to a port output of the control circuit. The port exits must be in
be able to choose either ground, supply voltage, in the high impedance
State and to be switched to clock output. This requires in the

The principle of the arrangement according to the invention and its mode of operation will be explained 1 explained.
Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which the number of LEDs is n = 2. A control device A is present, which can be a microcontroller. The control device A has connections (not designated) for a supply voltage V DD and ground GND as well as port outputs P1 and P2. Inputs of the control device A for control signals or for the input of control programs are not shown.
Two LEDs L1, L2 are arranged in a series circuit, each LED L1, L2 being followed by a current limiting resistor R / 2. The two individual resistors R / 2 have half the value of a total resistance R. The first LED L1 of the series connection is supplied with the supply voltage V DD . Nodes K1, K2 following the current limiting resistor R / 2 in the series circuit are connected to corresponding port outputs P1, P2.
An additional consideration is still necessary regarding the state T, clocked output. On the one hand, the frequency of the clock output should be greater than approximately 100 Hz in order to avoid "flickering". Regarding the duty cycle, the requirement applies that the average current through the LEDs should be independent of the number of activated LEDs. In general, the mathematical derivation of the duty cycle leads to a non-linear relationship to the variables V DD and V L (= flow voltage of the LEDs). If both LEDs are activated, V DD = 5V, total current limitation resistance R = 270Ω and, when using red LEDs, a current of 3.1mA through both diodes L1, L2 at a forward voltage V L of approx. 1.65V. If the output P1 was controlled statically with "0", this would result in a current of approx. 12.4mA through LED L1. So that the current receives the same mean value when the LEDs are individually controlled, the pulse duty factor of the clock output must have a value of 25%, corresponding to 3: 1 = (high to low).
The principle shown can generally also be used for a number of LEDs n> 2. However, you won't work with simple microcontroller circuits directly, but use a control device with higher supply voltages can be operated. The control scheme for n> 2 is also somewhat more complex and you need different, partly overlapping clock signals. The cases n = 3 and larger are dealt with below.
Fig. 2 shows an arrangement with three LEDs L1, L2, L3 and one downstream Current limiting resistor R / 3, which in this case is the resistance value a third of the total resistance R.
The clock outputs T and T * have the same signal shape. However, the "0" States not shifted overlapping each other, as shown in Fig. 5. The Determination of the duty cycle of these square wave signals follows from the considerations at equal averages of LED currents and will be below for general Case of any number n.
The control arrangement valid for any number of LEDs n is shown in FIG. 3 and requires no further explanation regarding the arrangement.
The clock outputs T and T * and T * i have the same signal form. However, the "0" states are not shifted from one another to overlap. As you can easily see, any suitable LED can be controlled individually by a suitable choice of the port states Z (P i ).
von T ergibt für diesen Fall 0,14.The example already considered for n = 2 and V DD = 5V leads with V L = 1.65V to a value of k = 3. Inserting results in T for 0.25.
With n = 3 and V DD = 7.5V, V L = 1.65V gives a value of k = 4.5. The calculation of T in this case gives 0.14.
