Claims (20)
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp comprising :a housing (28) defining an enclosed volume (34), said housing including at least one electrically conductive wall,an electrically conductive member (12) positioned within said enclosed volume (34), anda radiation gas enclosure (18) filled with a gas capable of generating an energy discharge, said gas enclosure (18) being defined by at least one wall (16, 20, 22, 24) which is transparent to radiation generated within the gas enclosure (18) and by at least one wall (16, 20, 22, 24) which is constructed of a dielectric material,the electrically conductive member (12) is located within the volume (34) of the housing (28), penetrating a wall of the housing (28) and a wall of the volume (34) through electrical insulators means, and is spaced away from the walls of the gas enclosure (18), and in thatthe radiation gas enclosure (18), located within the housing (28) and filled with a gas capable of generating an energy discharge, is electrically isolated from the electrically conductive member (12) and the electrically conductive walls of the housing (28) by a first liquid introduced between said member (12) and the gas enclosure (18) said first liquid functioning at least in part as a dielectric between said member (12) and said gas enclosure (18) and by a second liquid introduced between the housing (28) and the gas enclosure (18) said second liquid functioning at least in part as a second dielectric between said housing (28) and said gas enclosure (18).
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claim 1, characterized in that electrical connections (46, 48) are attached to the housing (28) and to the electrically conductive member (12) whereby AC voltage is applied to the lamp (10).
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claims 1 to 2, characterized in that the housing (28) is electrically grounded.
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claims 1 to 2, characterized in that the electrically conductive member (12) is electrically connected to a source (60) of high voltage AC energy.
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claim 1, characterized in that all the walls (16, 20, 22, 24) of the gas enclosure (18) are transparent to the radiation generated within the gas enclosure (18).
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claim 1, characterized in that the first and second walls (16, 20) of the gas enclosure (18) are fabricated from quartz.
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claim 1, characterized in that the first liquid is a cooling liquid flowing through the volume (34) of the housing (28) between the electrically conductive member (12) and the gas enclosure (18).
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claims 1, characterized in that the second liquid is a liquid to be treated by an electrical discharge from the gas, flowing through the housing (28) between the radiation transparent wall (16, 20, 22, 24) of the gas enclosure (18) and the housing (28).
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claims 1 to 2, characterized in that said electrically conductive member is a hollow pipe(12).
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claim 9, characterized in that said pipe (12) is in communication with a source of the first or second liquid.
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claim 10, characterized in that the first or second liquid enters the housing (28) through said pipe (12).
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to anyone of claims 1 to 11, characterized in that the housing (28) further comprises an inlet for said pipe (12), and said housing (28) further comprises an outlet adapted to permit egress of said first or said second liquid entering said housing through said pipe (12).
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claims 1 to 2, characterized in that the gas enclosure (18) is filled with a gas capable of generating radiation when AC voltage is applies to said gas enclosure (18).
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claim 13, characterized in that the gas is an excimer gas contained within a gas enclosure (18).
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claim 14, characterized in that said gas is an excimer gas selected from the group consisting of xenon and bromine.
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claim 7, characterized in that the cooling liquid is transparent to the radiation generated within the gas enclosure (18).
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to anyone of claims 1 to 16, characterized in that said first and second liquids are the same liquid.
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claim 1, characterized in that the housing (28), the gas enclosure (18), and the electrically conductive member (12) are each of cylindrical configuration.
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claim 12, characterized in that the cooling liquid inlet and the cooling liquid outlet (50) are connected to a source of cooling liquid through lengths of electrically insulating hoses (62, 64) which are long enough to limit the leakage current through the hoses (62, 64) and through the liquid within them to a predetermined value.
- An ultraviolet radiation generating lamp according to claim 7, characterized in that the cooling liquid is tap water.
