Definitions

  • the invention relates to a shutter assembly for a row of windows of one storey, separated by non-transparent front parts, comprising at least one lower rail, at least one upper rail and a number of panels, slidably mounted between the at least one lower rail and the at least one upper rail, such that in a closed situation a window is at least substantially covered by the panels and in a open situation the panels can be placed in front of non-transparent front parts
  • a shutter assembly of this type is known from the patent US-A-3,983,674.
  • the panels can be slided by hand between an upper rail and a lower rail into a storage compartment, located on one side of the window.
  • the assembly as such is less suited for a modern high-rise building, where the panels cannot be moved by hand and where the presence of a storage compartment on every window side is undesirable.
  • the inventive shutter assembly solves this problem, in particular for those situations where the non-transparent front parts combined are too small to accept all the panels side by side.
  • the inventive shutter assembly is characterised in that a first and a second lower rail is provided, running in parallel and a first and a second upper rail, running in parallel, such that for two adjacent windows the panel or the panels belonging to one window are slidably mounted to the first upper rail and the first lower rail and the panel or panels belonging to the other window are slidably mounted between the second upper rail and the second lower rail.
  • the panels can substantially overlap in an open situation, which significantly increases the field of application of the panels.
  • a favourable embodiment is characterised in that exactly two panels are provided for each window, such that in an open situation the panels flank the window.
  • a further favourable embodiment of the invention is characterised in that each window is provided with an operating mechanism for symmetrically sliding the two panels belonging to the window.
  • a very favourable embodiment according to an aspect of the invention is characterised in that the operating mechanism is arranged for placing, in an open situation, the panels belonging to the window exactly between the window and an adjacent window. This halves the amount of space needed and with one panel located behind the other panel, the panels make a less massive impression in the open situation, which is in general visually more attractive.
  • a further favourable embodiment according to an aspect of the invention is characterised in that the operating means comprise an infinite toothed belt, running above the first and second upper rail and that the two panels of a window are connected to the toothed belt such that when the toothed belt is moved, the panels move together or they move apart.
  • the operating mechanism preferably moreover comprises at least two toothed wheels, for cooperating with the toothed belt, in which case one toothed wheel is connected with drive means.
  • a favourable embodiment according to another aspect of the invention is characterised in that the drive means are located on an inside of the window and that a connection between the toothed wheel and the drive means comprises an axis running through a window frame of the window. It is true that a modification of the windows is still necessary, but it does not entail drastic means and can be easily realized.
  • Fig. 1 represents a row of windows 1,2,3, provided with the inventive shutter assembly with non-transparent front parts between the windows, not explicitly shown.
  • the non-transparent front parts are hidden behind the panels that are part of the inventive shutter assembly.
  • Two panels may cover each window and window 3 is actually covered with two panels 4,5.
  • Window 2 is uncovered; the panels 6,7 are situated in front of the adjacent non-transparent front parts.
  • Window 1 is also uncovered; the right panel is invisible because it is situated behind panel 6.
  • Above and below the windows two rails are mounted in parallel, which rails are in fact not visible in the figure because of the small scale. For the even windows the panels are slidable between the rails that run closest to the front of the building, for the odd windows the panels are slidable between the other rails.
  • Fig. 2 represents the arrangement of two rails 8,9, mounted parallel to the front 10 above window 11. Rails 8,9 are suspended by mounting brackets 12 in a way well known in the art. In a comparable way mounting brackets support the rails mounted below the windows. The rails are mounted semi-continuously, which means that there are no missing parts, although small interruptions may exist under connecting means 13 in order to enable the rails to expand and to shrink.
  • Fig. 3 represents in side view the mounting of mounting brackets 12,14 onto the window frames, how rails 15,16,17, 18 are connected to it and how the panels 19,20 can slide in the rails.
  • the topside of the panels are provided with suspended bearings 21,22 and on the bottom the panels are provided with wheels 24, the main task of which is to prevent the panels from flapping.
  • the panels 19,20 belong to two adjacent windows, because they are mounted onto different rails.
  • Fig. 4 represents in top view the mechanism for operating the panels from the inside, such that they always open or close symmetrically.
  • a toothed belt 25 is mounted for every window above rails 15 or 16.
  • the toothed belt is mounted above rail 15.
  • Toothed belt 25 may move over two toothed wheels, mounted above the aside the window, of which only one wheel 26 is visible.
  • Wheel 26 connected to an axis 28, via a transmission 27, as such well known in the art, which axis 28 runs through the window frame 29 into the building.
  • a motor or a crank may be connected to axis 28 such that toothed belt 25 can be moved.
  • a clamp 30 is connected to toothed belt 25 and a bracket 31 is connected to clamp 30, which bracket 31 is mounted onto the opened panel 32.
  • the other panel belonging to this window is connected on the other side of the window with a bracket and a clamp to toothed belt 25, whereby the clamp is fixed onto the side of the toothed belt that faces away from the front of the building.
  • Fig. 5 represents in front view the toothed belt 25, the toothed wheel 26, the transmission 27 and the axis 28, which enables the operation of the assembly. Moreover, clamp 30 and bracket 31 are visible. Clamp 30 may advantageously be used for connecting two ends of a toothed belt, such that the toothed belt can simply be made to measure at the spot.
