Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to a packing machine.
- In the following description, specific reference is made, purely by way of example, to the packing industry, and in particular to cigarette packing machines for producing packets of cigarettes.
- Known continuous cigarette packing machines comprise a wrapping wheel powered to rotate continuously about a central axis and having a number of wrapping heads equally spaced about the central axis. As it rotates, the wheel feeds each head along a wrapping path through a supply station where the head receives a sheet of wrapping material and a respective product, about which the sheet of wrapping material is folded into a U so that two opposite wings project transversely from the product; through a first folding station where the sheet of wrapping material is folded to form about the product a tubular wrapping having two opposite open ends; and through a second folding station where the open ends are folded to complete the product wrapping.
- Each wrapping head supports a respective folding device, which, as the wrapping head travels through the first folding station, folds a first of said two wings through 90° onto the product; and a second wing is later folded through 90° onto the product and partly onto the first wing by a further movable folding device located along the wrapping path at the first folding station.
- On continuous packing machines of the above type, each wrapping head oscillates, in use, in the neighborhood of a radial position with respect to the central axis of rotation of the wheel, so as to keep the head facing the supply station and/or a folding tool long enough to complete the relative operation.
- Packing machines of the above type are relatively expensive, on account of the complex design of the wrapping heads, which, besides rotating about a radial position, must also support a movable folding device.
- It is an object of the present invention to provide a packing machine designed to eliminate the aforementioned drawback, and which is therefore straightforward and cheap to produce.
- According to the present invention, there is provided a packing machine for wrapping a product in a sheet of wrapping material, the machine comprising a wrapping head for housing said sheet of wrapping material and said product; a conveying head for feeding said product to said wrapping head at a supply station; and a supply unit for feeding said sheet of wrapping material to said wrapping head, in which the sheet of wrapping material is folded into a U about the product; characterized in that said conveying head comprises a movable folding device, and actuating means for activating the movable folding device to fold at least one portion of said sheet of wrapping material onto said product at said supply station.
- A non-limiting embodiment of the present invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
- Figure 1 shows a schematic partial front view, with parts removed for clarity, of a preferred embodiment of the machine according to the present invention;

Number 1 in Figure 1 indicates as a whole an automatic cigarette packing machine for producing packets (not shown) of cigarettes, and in which agroup 2 of cigarettes is first wrapped in asheet 3 of foil wrapping material and then inserted into a blank (not shown) which is folded aboutgroup 2 of cigarettes to form a packet (not shown) of cigarettes. -
Packing machine 1 comprises awrapping wheel 4 rotating continuously (clockwise in Figure 1) about a central axis 5 perpendicular to the Figure 1 plane, and havingperipheral wrapping heads 6 equally spaced about axis 5 and which are fed along a closed, substantially circular wrapping path P1 aswheel 4 rotates about axis 5. In eachhead 6 there is defined aseat 7 for first receiving and conveying arespective sheet 3 of wrapping material folded substantially into a U, and subsequently also arespective group 2 of cigarettes which is wrapped insheet 3 of wrapping material. - Each
group 2 of cigarettes is confined within a substantially parallelepiped space defined by a pair of parallel majorlateral surfaces 8 and a pair of parallel minorlateral surfaces 9 perpendicular tosurfaces 8. Said space also comprises two oppositelongitudinal ends 10, and acentral portion 11 interposed between said twolongitudinal ends 10. - A first portion P2 of path P1 extends through a supply station S1 having a known supply unit 12 (shown only partly) for supplying
seat 7 of eachhead 6 with arespective sheet 3 of wrapping material, which is folded into a U insideseat 7. Station S1 also comprises afurther supply unit 13 located downstream fromunit 12 in the traveling direction ofwrapping heads 6 along path P1, and which provides for supplyingseat 7 of eachhead 6 with arespective group 2 of cigarettes, which is inserted inside therespective U-folded sheet 3 of wrapping material, which, oncegroup 2 is inserted, has two facingwings group 2. - First portion P2 of path P1 also extends through a folding station S2 where
wings sheet 3 of wrapping material are folded through 90° ontogroup 2 and one onto the other to form atubular wrapping 16 having two opposite open ends 17. More specifically,wing 14 is folded through 90° ontogroup 2 by afolding device 18 fed along a portion of path P1 extending through station S2, andwing 15 is folded through 90° ontogroup 2 and partly ontowing 14 by afolding device 19 located in a fixed position with respect towheel 4. - A second portion P3 of path P1, downstream from first portion P2, extends through a folding station S3 where the opposite open ends 17 of
tubular wrapping 16 are folded ontogroup 2 by afolding device 20, located in a fixed position with respect towheel 4, to complete the folding ofsheet 3 of wrapping material aboutgroup 2 and so form a closedwrapping 21. - Finally, wrapping path P1 extends through an unloading station S4 where
wrappings 21 are extracted successively fromrespective seats 7 on wrappingwheel 4 and fed to known follow-up wrapping units (not shown) onmachine 1. - Each wrapping
head 6 is hinged towheel 4 and is oscillated, with respect towheel 4, about anaxis 22 parallel to axis 5 by a known cam and rockerarm actuating device 23, of whichrespective wrapping head 6 defines the central portion of anend rocker arm 24 having an arm defined byrespective seat 7. - Actuating
device 23 provides for positioninghead 6 substantially perpendicular to wrapping path P1 along first portion P2 of path P1. More specifically, actuatingdevice 23 provides for oscillating each wrappinghead 6 aboutrespective axis 22 and in the neighborhood of a perpendicular position with respect to path P1 ashead 6 is fed through stations S1 and S2, so as to cooperate withsupply units folding device 19. - Actuating
device 23 also provides for settinghead 6 in a fixed position substantially parallel to wrapping path P1 along second portion P3 of path P1, so thathead 6 cooperates along path P1 withfolding device 20. -
Supply unit 12 comprises a transfer wheel (not shown) powered to rotate continuously about a fixed central axis (not shown) parallel to axis 5, and having peripheral, substantially trapezoidal folding spindles 25 (only one shown). Eachfolding spindle 25 provides for withdrawing arespective sheet 3 of wrapping material from a known supply unit (not shown), and for feeding thesheet 3 of wrapping material, folded into a U, into arespective seat 7 at supply station S1. During insertion ofsheet 3 of wrapping material,respective spindle 25 andseat 7 act like a punch and die respectively, and provide for optimum U-folding ofsheet 3 of wrapping material insideseat 7. -
Seat 7 of eachhead 6 is defined by abottom wall 26 fixed with respect tohead 6, and by twolateral walls 27, which are hinged on opposite sides ofwall 26 and oscillated, about respective axes parallel toaxis 22, between an open position and a closed position by a known cam control device (not shown). In the open position, the twolateral walls 27 of eachseat 7 form an obtuse angle withbottom wall 26, andseat 7 has a section in the form of an isosceles trapezium negatively reproducing the shape offolding spindles 25; and, in the closed position, the twolateral walls 27 of eachseat 7 form a substantially right angle withbottom wall 26, andseat 7 has a rectangular section of substantially the same size as agroup 2 of cigarettes so as to engagegroup 2 completely, i.e. by bothcentral portion 11 andlongitudinal ends 10. - The inner surfaces of
walls wheel 4. -
Supply unit 13 comprises a continuous conveyor 28 (shown partly) for feeding a number ofseats 29 along a path P4 through a known loading station (not shown) where agroup 2 of cigarettes is formed in or transferred to a respective seat 29 (in known manner not shown), and through supply station S1 wheregroup 2 of cigarettes is transferred fromseat 29 to arespective seat 7 by a furthermovable seat 30, which is carried by atransmission pulley 31 ofconveyor 28 and provides for removinggroup 2 fromseat 29 andfeeding group 2 toseat 7. -
Conveyor 28 comprises a known flexible toothed belt 32 (shown partly in Figure 1) which is fed along path P4 bypulley 31, which comprises a toothedcentral roller 33 rotating continuously (anticlockwise in Figure 1) about acentral axis 34 parallel to axis 5, and two flanges 35 (only one shown in Figure 1) coaxial withaxis 34. -
Conveyor 28 also comprises a number ofbodies 36 supported by and equally spaced alongbelt 32. In eachbody 36 is defined arespective seat 29, which has a longitudinal dimension (perpendicular to the Figure 1 plane) smaller than that ofgroup 2, and a rectangular section of substantially the same transverse dimensions as agroup 2 so as to engagegroup 2 bycentral portion 11, leaving respectivelongitudinal ends 10 substantially free. - Each
body 36 is provided with aretaining device 37 comprising twojaws 38 integral withbelt 32 and which oscillate between a gripping position along the straight portions ofbelt 32, and a release position along the curved portions (only one shown) ofbelt 32. - The two flanges 35 (only one shown in Figure 1) support, in between, a number of peripheral heads 39 (only one shown in Figure 1) equally spaced about
axis 34 and mounted for rotation aboutrespective axes 40 parallel toaxis 34. Eachhead 39 comprises twogripping devices 41 which together define arespective seat 30 for engaging arespective group 2 byrespective ends 10. - Each
gripping device 41 comprises two relatively thin L-shaped sections 42 lying in the same plane perpendicular toaxis 40, and which are movable, with respect to each other and in said plane, between a release position and a gripping position (shown in Figure 1) in whichsections 42 define atubular seat 43 having an axis parallel toaxis 34 and a rectangular section approximately equal to but no larger than the cross section ofgroup 2. - Each
head 39 is provided with a known cam and rocker arm control and actuating device (not shown) housed between the twoflanges 35 and which, aspulley 31 rotates aboutaxis 34, provides for controlling the angular position ofseat 30 aboutaxis 40 and between a loading position, in whichseat 30 coincides with arespective seat 29 to withdraw agroup 2 of cigarettes fromseat 29, and an unloading position, in whichseat 30 coincides with arespective seat 7 to transfergroup 2 of cigarettes toseat 7. - The cam and rocker arm control and actuating device also controls the position and configuration of each
gripping device 41 between an open position, in which the twotubular seats 43 of thesame head 39 are separated by a distance greater than the length of arespective group 2 of cigarettes, and a closed position, in which the twotubular seats 43 of thesame head 39 definerespective seat 30 and grip arespective group 2 of cigarettes byends 10. - Each
head 39 comprises arespective folding device 18, which in turn comprises a roller 44 mounted for rotation betweenflanges 35 to oscillate aboutrespective axis 40 with respect toflanges 35 andrespective gripping devices 41. Each roller 44 supports in rotary manner afolding tool 45, which is oscillated, with respect to roller 44, about anaxis 46 parallel toaxis 40 by a knownepicyclic control device 47, which also controls oscillation of roller 44 aboutaxis 40. -
Folding device 19 comprises aroller 48 powered to rotate continuously about anaxis 49 parallel to axis 5, and supporting in rotary manner afolding tool 50, which is oscillated, with respect toroller 48, about anaxis 51 parallel toaxis 49 by a knownepicyclic control device 52. -
Folding device 20 comprises a pair of fixedhelical folding elements 53 parallel to and on either side of wrapping path P1 to engage and fold respective ends 17 of eachtubular wrapping 16 as the respective wrappinghead 6 travels along path P1. - Operation of
machine 1 will now be described with reference to one wrappinghead 6, and as of the instant in whichhead 6 leaves unloading station S4 and is fed, bywheel 4 rotating about axis 5, towards supply station S1. - As already stated, along first portion P2 of wrapping path P1, actuating
device 23 sets and maintains wrappinghead 6 in a position substantially crosswise to path P1. - As
head 6 is fed through supply station S1,seat 7 is moved into said open position, and arespective spindle 25 ofsupply unit 12 supplies, as described previously, arespective sheet 3 of wrapping material, which is folded into a U insideseat 7 and retained insideseat 7 by said suction device (not shown). -
Supply unit 13 then suppliesseat 7 with arespective group 2 of cigarettes, which is inserted insiderespective sheet 3 of wrapping material, the twowings group 2 is inserted, are positioned facing each other and projecting transversely fromgroup 2. - To supply
group 2 toseat 7, grippingdevices 41 ofrespective seat 30 are set to said open and release positions, andseat 30 is oscillated aboutrespective axis 40 to move into and maintain, for a given length of time, a position substantially coincident with arespective seat 29 and in which grippingdevices 41 ofseat 30 are moved into said closed and gripping positions to grip thegroup 2 of cigarettes carried byseat 29. At the same time, the curve in path P4 moves retainingdevice 37 ofseat 29 into said release position so thatgroup 2 of cigarettes is left under the control ofseat 30. - At this point,
seat 30 is rotated about itsown axis 40 toextract group 2 of cigarettes fromseat 29 andfeed group 2 toseat 7 which, as wrappingwheel 4 rotates continuously, is traveling through supply station S1 withlateral walls 27 in said open position, and withsheet 3 of wrapping material folded into a U inside. -
Seat 7 andseat 30 are oscillated aboutrespective axes lateral walls 27 ofseat 7 are moved into said closed position togrip group 2 of cigarettes and at the same time complete the folding ofsheet 3 of wrapping material into a U aboutgroup 2 of cigarettes. - For a given length of time,
seat 7 engages, withsheet 3 of wrapping material in between, bothgroup 2 of cigarettes andsections 42 ofgripping devices 41 ofseat 30, which is made possible by the thinness ofsections 42. - Once
group 2 of cigarettes is gripped byseat 7, grippingdevices 41 ofseat 30 are moved into said open position, so thatsections 42release group 2 of cigarettes by being withdrawn longitudinally with respect togroup 2, while still in said gripping position. - As shown in Figure 2, simultaneously with release of
group 2 bysections 42,control device 47 activatesrespective folding device 18 to oscillate respective roller 44 with respect toaxis 40 so thatrespective folding tool 45folds wing 14 ofsheet 3 of wrapping material through 90° ontogroup 2. - Upon completion of the above release and folding operations,
seats seat 30 is restored to the initial position; andseat 7 is fed through folding station S2 bywheel 4 rotating about axis 5. - As shown in Figure 3, as
seat 7 travels through folding station S2, the rotation ofroller 48 aboutaxis 49 and the simultaneous oscillation offolding tool 50 aboutaxis 51 causetool 50 to foldwing 15 ofsheet 3 of wrapping material through 90° ontogroup 2 and partly onto the already foldedwing 14 to complete the formation oftubular wrapping 16. - Once the above folding operation is completed, wrapping
head 6 is fed along second portion P3 of wrapping path P1 and, as stated, is set to and maintained in a fixed position substantially parallel to path P1 by actuatingdevice 23. - As
seat 7 of wrappinghead 6 is fed through folding station S3, the opposite ends 17 oftubular wrapping 16 are engaged byrespective folding elements 53 which, asseat 7 travels along path P1, fold ends 17 ontogroup 2 to complete the formation of wrapping 21. - Finally,
seat 7 is fed through unloading station S4 where wrapping 21 is extracted fromseat 7 and fed to known follow-up wrapping units (not shown) ofmachine 1. The above operations are repeated cyclically.
Claims (6)
- A packing machine for wrapping a product (2) in a sheet (3) of wrapping material, the machine (1) comprising a wrapping head (6) for housing said sheet (3) of wrapping material and said product (2); a conveying head (39) for feeding said product (2) to said wrapping head (6) at a supply station (S1); and a supply unit (12) for feeding said sheet (3) of wrapping material to said wrapping head (6), in which the sheet (3) of wrapping material is folded into a U about the product (2); characterized in that said conveying head (39) comprises a movable folding device (18), and actuating means (47) for activating the movable folding device (18) to fold at least one portion (14) of said sheet (3) of wrapping material onto said product (2) at said supply station (S1).
- A machine as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that said sheet (3) of wrapping material folded into a U about said product (2) has a pair of wings (14, 15) facing each other and projecting transversely from the product (2); said actuating means (47) activating said movable folding device (18) to fold a first wing (14) of said pair of wings (14, 15) through 90° onto the product (2).
- A machine as claimed in Claim 2, characterized by comprising a folding device (19) located in a fixed position with respect to the machine and for folding a second wing (15) of said pair of wings (14, 15) through 90° onto said product (2) and partly onto said first wing (14).
- A machine as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 3, characterized by comprising a wrapping conveyor (4) for feeding said wrapping head (6) along an endless first wrapping path (P1); and a supply conveyor (28) for feeding said feeding head along an endless second path (P4) substantially tangent to said first wrapping path (P1) at said supply station (S1).
- A machine as claimed in Claim 4, characterized in that said wrapping conveyor and said supply conveyor (4, 28) are continuous conveyors; said supply conveyor (28) comprising first control means for oscillating said conveying head (39) about a first axis (40) with respect to the supply conveyor (28); and said wrapping conveyor (4) comprising second control means (23) for oscillating said wrapping head (6), with respect to the wrapping conveyor (4), about a second axis (22) parallel to said first axis (40) and in a neighborhood of a position perpendicular with respect to said first wrapping path (P1).
- A machine as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 5, characterized in that said supply unit (12) is located upstream from said supply station (S1) in the traveling direction of said wrapping head (6).
