Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for the rear of a seat back in a row of seats, for example, seats in an aeroplane, train, boat, bus, or auditorium, where the seats are placed in rows one after another, and where the rear of the seat back has an upper portion and a lower portion, and where the upper portion optionally has, for the use of a seat occupant in a seat located immediately therebehind, a section provided with, for example, decoration, information, commercial advertising and/or means for visual entertainment. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a storage body for releasable attachment to the rear ofthe seat back, and a blank for the production of such a storage body.
- the folding tables are often so small in size that it is difficult to find room at the same time for bottles, cans, glasses, serving trays containing food and so forth. Often such bottles, cans and the like must be put elsewhere than on the actual table surface, for example, by placing such articles on the seat, or in a jacket or shirt pocket, or other readily accessible places, for example, a bag on the floor.
- Another aspect ofthe problems often met on board an aeroplane, but that is just as common on board trains, boats or buses, is that the waiting staff who take orders from the passengers must carry out the order by handing over one article at a time to the passenger. Often the passenger also overestimates the available space on the table before him, with the consequence that problems arise in finding a suitable place for what is received from the waiting staff.
- the device the storage body and the blank are characterised by the features which are set forth in the patent claims below, and also in the following description with reference to the appended drawings.
- a carton or box which is simple to erect from a flattened form to a finished carton, and which can easily be flattened again after use, for example, for use on board an aeroplane or in a cinema or theatre, for various types of snacks, and without there being any need for aids to erect and flatten the carton.
- the canon according to the invention comprises a bottom, two side walls, whereof one may have an upward extension to be suspended in some way or another, and two end walls.
- the blank comprises a bottom section, two side wall sections, optionally with an extension of one ofthe side wall sections, and two end wall sections.
- the carton according to the invention is characterised in that the end walls are recessed relative to the ends ofthe carton and are each hinged to their respective end section which is in the top ofthe carton, and wherein each end wall has at least one fastening flap for insertion at least into one slit in the carton bottom and/or in one or both side walls.
- the carton blank according to the invention is characterised in that it comprises a top section which is divided into two end sections, one at each end ofthe top section, and two end wall sections, each of which is within its respective end section and is connected thereto via a hinge - or a folding line, each end wall section having at least one fastening flap, whilst at least the bottom section and/or one or both ofthe end wall sections have at least one slit for the insertion ofthe fastening flap or flaps.
- the end walls or end wall sections can easily be pivoted from the top plane ofthe carton and into positions at right angles to the longitudinal side walls and the bottom, for insertion ofthe fastening flaps into slits, so that the end walls are held in place.
- the end walls can easily be pressed inwards into the carton, causing the fastening flaps to disengage from the slits.
- the end walls can thus be pivoted into approximately the top plane ofthe carton, which corresponds to the plane ofthe end sections to which they are connected, and the carton can be folded along the parallel folding lines in the transverse direction of the carton, so that the carton is flattened.
- the bottom, the side walls and the end sections in the top ofthe carton together can form a partial cylinder, which may be permanently joined by means of, for example, an adhesive section.

- Figs. 17a,b,c and d show a further embodiment of a storage carton or box
- Fig. 18 shows a blank for the formation the carton or box shown in Fig. 16.
- Fig. 19 shows a blank for the formation ofthe carton or box shown in Fig. 17.
- the rear 2 of the seat back 1 has an upper portion 3 which may be provided with a section 3 intended for optional decoration, information or the like.
- a folding table 4 designed to hold food, beverages and so forth. As mentioned above, this table surface is more often than not too small to hold all the articles desired.
- a form of case or storage body 6 having pockets 7 which, for example, on the rear side can be provided with a Velcro fastening 8 for securing to a similar Velcro fastening on an area 9 ofthe rear of the seat back 1. It may be expedient to provide Velcro fasteners both at the top and at the bottom of said body 6 so that it will be always held against the rear ofthe seat back and its lower portion will not hang down and outwards if the seat back 1 is tilted backwards.
- the storage pockets 7 may be designed to hold the articles for which it is normally difficult to find space, for instance, small wine bottles, miniature bottles of spirits, beer and mineral water cans etc., and also other articles which the passenger behind said seat back rear otherwise finds difficult to place in an expedient manner, for example, a mobile telephone, a Dictaphone or the like.
- the table 4 is folded upwards, the body 6 will be out of sight, provided that the articles which previously were in the pockets have been removed, so that the table 4 can in an appropriate manner be folded upwards to a stowed position and locked.
- the body 6 and contents are removed before the table 4 is folded upwards to a stowed position.
- Fig. 2 shows a solution where the storage body is a box or carton 10 having suspension holes 1 1, 12, and where the suspension means on the rear ofthe seat back 1 consists of two hooks or studs 13,14.
- Fig. 3 shows a solution which resembles that in Fig. 2, but where the suspension hooks or studs, here designated 15, 16, are secured to the underside ofthe table top 4, so that the box or carton 10 is only releasably secured when the table is stowed away and fastened to the rear ofthe seat back 1.
- Fig. 4 shows a suspension mounting 17 having suspension hooks or studs 18, 19.
- a portion 17' between the hooks or studs 18, 19 may, for example, be provided with information and/or advertising.
- the rear of the suspension mounting for example, as shown in Fig. 5 and Fig. 6 may be provided with a Velcro fastener 18, respectively other fastening means 19, for instance, glue pads, double-sided adhesive pads, magnets or the like, and where the section on the seat back which is to receive the mounting has an interacting Velcro fastener (see Fig. 15), or, for example, a metal plate to interact with the magnets or said adhesive means.
- Figs. 7 and 8 show a suspension hook or stud 20 respectively in perspective from in front and in section.
- the suspension portion on the carton or box is designated 10'.
- the bottom edge thereof is bevelled, preferably upwards and backwards. This means that if the seat occupant accidentally pushes the carton or box upwards, the suspension portion will be pushed backwards against the attachment piece 20", and will thus not simply be unhooked from the hook or stud.
- the suspension means consists of an approximately U-shaped hoop 21 which is pivotally connected to the rear ofthe seat back 1 , optionally under spring loading.
- the hoop is arranged so that, in its outwardly pivoted position as shown in Fig. 9b, it is able to interact with an article-receiving body, in the shape of a carton or box 22, which has a cantilevered edge portion 23 to allow the carton or box 22 to be retained vertically by the hoop 21.
- the suspension means is constructed having an extractable suspension member 24 in the form of a preferably rigid plate which, via elastically yielding means 25, is connected to the body 9.
- elastically yielding means may be, for example, elastic bands, flexible articulations or the like.
- Such means are, as shown, preferably located not only on the side edges of the plate, but also at one or more points along the bottom edge of the plate 24.
- An article-storing body, such as a box or carton 26, can be placed in the space which is formed between the rear ofthe seat back and the rear of the plate 24. whereupon the plate 24 can be released back into place and its upper edge can form a rest for a support flange 27 on the box 26.
- the rear ofthe seat back can be provided with an elongate strip 28 which forms a suspension member.
- the strip 28 has preferably an upper, somewhat outwardly inclined portion, thereby facilitating engagement with an oblong opening 29 in the article-storing body 30 in the form of a box or carton, when this is pressed onto the suspension strip 28.
- the box 30 can. if so desired, be provided with a handgrip opening 31.
- a solution is shown where the rear ofthe seat back is equipped with a suspension member in the form of an elongate strip 32.
- the strip 32 can, for example, be L-shaped, wherein the largest arm 32' thereof, for example, extends upwards.
- the strip 32 is arranged to be able to interact with an article-storing body 33 in the form of a box or carton, wherein one ofthe longitudinal upper edges of the body is equipped with a complementally shaped engaging strip 34 for hooking onto the suspension strip 32.
- the suspension strip 32 may, for example, consist of a magnet strip if the box 33 is made of a ferromagnetic material.
- the complementally shaped strip 34 which a band of ferromagnetic material if the box 33 is, for example, made of plastic or cardboard.
- the use of a Velcro fastener is conceivable, although this must in no way be considered as limiting for the inventive idea as expressed in connection with Fig. 12.
- the suspension member consists of at least two suspension hooks or studs 35, 36, where each one preferably is designed to have a shaft projecting outwards from the rear ofthe seat back with a head outermost, which, for example, resembles a screw or an outwardly projecting rivet.
- suspension hooks 35, 36 are adapted to form releasable engagement with a keyhole-like openings 37, 38 in a vertically projecting portion of a carton or box 39.
- the suspension member is a strip 39 which is fixedly secured to the rear ofthe seat back 1 and which internally is provided with wedging means (not shown) for releasable wedging of a suspension lug 40 on the article-storing part in the form of a carton or box 41.
- wedging means not shown
- this suspension strip 39 can optionally be constructed so that the lug 40 is not released before a release button 39' on the strip is actuated. Alternatively, it would be possible to release the box 41 from the strip 39 by pulling this sideways away from the strip, the retaining capacity being in the vertical direction.
- Fig. 15 shows a carton or box 42 for storing articles and the like wherein the carton or box 42 has a vertically projecting portion 43 which on the rear side thereof is provided with a first Velcro fastener means 44. In a similar way, the rear ofthe seat back is provided with a second and interacting Velcro fastener means 45.
- Figs. 16a and 16b show a first, preferred type of storage body in the form of a carton or box 46 which is collapsible, and where the body has a suspension portion and will be especially suitable for use, for example, in connection with the embodiments in Figs. 9, 10, 12, 14 and 15.
- Figs. 17a, 17b, 17c and 17d show a second, preferred type of storage body in the form of a carton or box 47 having a suspension portion which in reality constitutes a part ofthe lid of the carton or box when this is in a closed, non-suspended condition.
- the suspension portion is optionally equipped with suspension holes.
- Figs. 16a, 16b and 17a-d are ofthe self- locking type when they are in an erected condition.
- the carton or box which is shown in Figs. 16a and 16b comprises a bottom 48, side walls 50 and 51, recessed end walls 52 and 53, and a suspension portion 54 having optional suspension holes 55, 56.
- Alternative suspension means on the suspension portion 54 are also conceivable, for example, hooks, Velcro fastener tapes or the like.
- the blank is folded along the parallel folding lines 57, 58, 59 and 60, which are parallel to the transverse direction ofthe blank, an adhesive flap 61 being folded in the opposite way about the folding line 57 and adhered to the inside ofthe side wall 51, on an extended portion 51 ' thereof to form the suspension portion 54.
- a "half- finished" carton or box is thus obtained, which can easily be erected into a parallelepipedic form, respectively flattened.
- the end walls 52 and 53 can be pivoted about respective hinge or folding lines 62, 63 towards the end sections 64 and 65, so that the end walls 52 and 53 extend transverse to the first-mentioned folding lines 57-60.
- the end walls 52, 53 have respective fastening flaps 60 and 61 which can be inserted into, or optionally fed through, each respective slit 66 and 67 in the bottom 48, in that the end walls 52 and 53 are bent somewhat before the flaps 60 and 61 snap into place.
- a portion 68 between the end wall sections 52 and 53 has been removed, and the end wall sections 52, 53 are connected only to their respective end sections 64 and 65.
- the flexibility ofthe end walls 52 and 53 will then cause the fastening flaps 60 and 61 to be held in place in the slits 66 and 67. If later it is desirable to flatten the carton, the end walls 52 and 53 are pressed a little inwards, i.e., towards each other, by being bent so that the fastening flaps 60 and 61 slip out of engagement with the slits 66 and 67, the end walls 52 and 53 are pivoted until they are level with the top ofthe carton and the carton can be folded up.
- the end walls or end wall sections 76 and 77 are not connected to the other walls, and between the end wall sections 76 and 77 ofthe blank shown in Fig. 19 is an opening 80, which in this embodiment is larger than the corresponding opening 68 shown in Fig. 18.
- the blank which is shown in Fig. 19 has a carton lid 81 located at the opposite end ofthe blank relative to the side wall section 72.
- the side wall section 72 is greater in height than the side wall section 73, i.e., greater in height than the actual carton.
- the portion 72' ofthe side wall section 72 which extends higher than the side wall section 73 can therefore be adhered to the outside ofthe lid 81 in the portion 81 ' thereof.
- the lid 81 has a flap 81 " which can be brought into adhesive contact with the portion 73' ofthe side wall 73 when the lid 81 with its widest portion covers the upward opening ofthe carton or box.
- the actual carton thus forms a parallelepiped, which can be flattened and erected when the end walls 76 and 77 are level with the top ofthe carton.
- the end walls 76 and 77 can be pivoted from the top to positions at right angles to the bottom 69, the side walls 72 and 73 and the end sections 74 and 75, and the fastening flaps 78 and 79 can be inserted into, optionally through, the slits 70 and 71 in the bottom 69.
- the slits 70 and 71 do not need to be in the bottom section or bottom 69.
- each end wall 76 and 77 can be in one or both side walls 72 and 73, preferably near the bottom section or bottom 69.
- Several slits may be employed for each end wall 76 and 77, optionally both in the bottom section or bottom 69 and in one or both side wall sections or side walls 72 and 71.
- the lid 81 which in the embodiment in Figs. 17a-d and 19 forms an extension up above one ofthe side walls 72 ofthe carton or box, may be employed for suspending the carton.
- the carton or box may be equipped with securing means, such as hooks, Velcro fastener tapes, suspension holes 82, 83 or the like.
- the carton can be made of any suitable material whatsoever, such as cardboard or corrugated cardboard, pasteboard, plastic, metal foil or a laminate of two or more such materials.
- a box ofthe type which can be seen in Figs. 17a-d will be particularly suitable for use with the device according to, for example, Figs. 2, 3, 4-8 and 13.
- the suspension portion 81, 81 " will protect the rear of the seat back against any soiling from the contents found in or moved from or to the carton, for instance, chocolate.
- the box or carton or article-storing body can be equipped with information, advertising, decoration or the like according to need and desire.
- the present invention will ease the situation not only for, for example, a passenger on a means of transport, but also the staff who are to serve that passenger.
- the present invention will also enable the staff to take orders from a passenger, whereupon the order, for example, beverages, purchased articles etc. are placed in the carton, box or body which is then handed over to the passenger.
- the staff will thus be able to hand over the entire order at the same time.
- the passenger can then place the carton or the like as is explained and illustrated, for example, in connection with Figs. 1-3 and 9-15.
- the present invention thus solves the known problems, which means that the cabin crew on board, for instance, an aeroplane, will have much more time in which to carry out their duties and give the passengers better and more attention than is possible today.
- the passengers will be more easily compelled to put waste in the carton which is placed immediately in front of each passenger.
- the whole carton and the waste can thus be handed over in one operation to the cabin crew for emptying.
- the empty cartons can optionally be folded up in a simple way.
- the present invention thus means that also the collection of waste is less demanding and less time-consuming for the cabin crew. Furthermore, there will be less rubbish in inappropriate places in the cabin, which simplifies cleaning and the time it take to do this.
