Bracket 20 may comprise first panel (22, Fig 2) and second panel (24, Fig 2) that are connected by a connecting member or third panel (26, Fig 2). Second panel (24, Fig 2) may be inserted between the table device and its mounting when the table is in an upright position. To accommodate a clasp member that holds the table device in an upright position, bracket 20 may include aperture or recess (30, Fig 2), which may be provided on connecting member (26, Fig 2). Platform member 40 may be integral with bracket 20, or they may be separate components, in which case at least one of platform member 40 and bracket 20 may include attachment means for attaching platform member 40 to bracket 20. The attachment means may comprise protrusions 32 and slots (50, Fig 3), and may be adjustable for varying the height of platform member 40 relative to bracket 20. Support 10 may include support webs (46, Fig 3) for supporting a load applied to platform member 40, and may include a cushion that may be received by platform member 40. Parts of the travel support may be foldable.
Description
Travel Apparatus The present invention relates to a support surface that may be used during travelling. In particular, the invention relates to a support surface that may be S used to assist resting during travelling.
Typically, many travellers find it difficult to sleep in the seating in aeroplanes, coaches and the like, particularly in economy class seating. Also, the number of body positions available to a traveller when seated is limited which can lead to discomfort, particularly during long journeys.
Aeroplanes and coaches typically have a table device which has a mounting attached to the seat in front and a table hinged to the mounting which can pivot from a vertical to a horizontal orientation. A clasp is provided for maintaining the table in the vertical position. These table devices do not provide a suitable surface to offer an alternative resting position to the traveller as the table is too low down for an average sized person. Even if a pillow or cushion is placed on the table, it is awkward for an average sized person to lean forward and rest their head on the pillow or cushion. The table and its hinge are also not intended to *:.::* 20 carry a substantial load. *.
According to the present invention there is provided a travel apparatus comprising: a support bracket adapted to mount to the mounting of a table device; and S..
* 25 a platform member adapted to provide a support surface. * 1
The support bracket may include an insert member adapted to be insertable between the table and the mounting of the table device when the table is in an upright position. The support bracket may comprise a first and second panel which are spaced apart and connected by a connecting member such that the spacing between the first and second panel substantially corresponds to the ( thickness of the table and one of the first and second panels provides the insert member. The connecting member may comprise a third panel.
The support bracket may include an aperture, slot, recess or the like to accommodate the clasp of the table device. The aperture, slot or recess may be provided at the connecting member.
The platform member may be a separate component from the support bracket.
At least one of the platform member and support bracket may include attachment means for attaching the platform member to the support bracket. The attachment means may be adjustable for varying the height of the platform member relative to the support bracket. The attachment means may comprise a plurality of protrusions provided at one of the platform member and the support bracket which are receivable within a corresponding plurality of slots provided at the other of the platform member and the support bracket.
Alternatively, the platform member and support bracket may be integral.
The platform member may comprise a fourth panel which is substantially vertically orientated and attachable to the support bracket. The platform member *:::* may comprise a fifth panel which is substantially horizontally orientated and S...
connected to the fourth panel. One or more support webs may be provided for supporting a load applied to the platform member. S..
* 25 The travel apparatus may include a pillow or cushion. The platform member may *:::: be adapted to receive a pillow or cushion.

* The travel apparatus may be foldable or collapsible. The platform member may be foldable. The fifth panel may be foldable relative to the fourth panel from a horizontal to a vertical orientation. The support webs may foldable relative to the fourth panel.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a travel apparatus; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a support bracket of the travel apparatus of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a perspective view of a platform member of the travel apparatus of Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows a travel apparatus 10 which comprises a support bracket 20 and a platform member 40. In this embodiment, the support bracket 20 and platform member 40 are separate components. The support bracket 20 is shown in isolation in Figure 2, while the platform member 40 is shown in isolation in Figure 3.
The support bracket 20 is formed from a first panel 22 and a second panel 24 which are spaced apart and connected at each of their top edges by a third panel 26. The spacing 28 between the first and second panels corresponds approximately to the thickness of the table of a standard table device provided on aeroplanes and coaches. Therefore, the second panel 24 can be inserted between the table and the mounting of the table device when the table is in an upright position. This provides a secure mounting for the travel apparatus 10. A significant load on the travel apparatus 10 can be transmitted to the table device via its table hinge. This is because the table is upright and so there is * substantially no moment created by the load, whereas a moment would be created if the table was horizontal.
The support bracket 20 includes an aperture 30 to accommodate the clasp of the table device. Therefore, the lower surface of the third panel 26 will abut the top surface of the table (when it is upright).
The platform member 40 comprises a fourth panel 42 which is substantially vertical in use and a fifth panel 44 which is substantially horizontal in use. An edge of the fifth panel 44 is connected to the top edge of the fourth panel 42.
Also, two support webs 46 are provided for supporting a load applied to the fifth panel 44. The fifth panel 44 provides a support surface 48.
The platform member 40 and support bracket 20 include attachment means for attaching the platform member 40 to the support bracket 20. This attachment means comprises a number of protrusions 32 provided on the outer surface of the first panel 22 of the support bracket 20. The protrusions 32 are receivable within corresponding slots 50 provided at the fourth panel 42 of the platform member 40.
The attachment of two rows of protrusions 32 to two rows of slots 50 is sufficient to provide stable attachment of the platform member 40 to the support bracket 20. Since there are four rows of protrusions 32 on the support bracket 20, the 1* platform member 40 can be attached to the support bracket 20 at three distinct *.I* S....' heights. The attachment means is therefore adjustable for varying the height of *:::: the platform member 40 relative to the support bracket 20.
In the embodiment shown, each row comprises three protrusions 32 or three *:::: slots 50. It is to be appreciated that the central protrusion and slot may be omitted providing that the other protrusions and slots are configured to bear the load.
In use, a traveller mounts the support bracket 20 to the table device with the table in an upright position. The platform member 40 is then attached to the support bracket 20 at the desired height. A pillow or cushion may then be placed on the support surface 48. The traveller can then lean forward and rest their head on the pillow or cushion.
The travel apparatus 10 can be adapted to be foldable or collapsible for convenient transport. The support bracket 20 is already substantially planar, although the third panel 26 could be hinged to both of the first and second panels so that the support bracket 20 may be fully folded flat. The fifth panel 44 can be configured to be foldable relative to the fourth panel 42 from a horizontal to a vertical orientation. The support webs 46 can be configured to be foldable relative to the fourth panel 42. The platform member 40 can then be fully folded flat.
Whilst specific embodiments of the present invention have been described above, it will be appreciated that departures from the described embodiments may still fall within the scope of the present invention. * .* * S S * ** *S*. * * **** 15*5 * *.
