Durch die Ausbildung einer von einem Kreisbogen abweichenden Schneide auf einem Rotationsmesser läßt sich bei einem Zusammenwirken dieser Schneide mit einem geeigneten Gegenmesser ein ziehender, scherenähnlicher Schnitt vorgegebener, durch die Relativbewegung der Messerschneide entlang der Gegenschneide bestimmter Schnittlänge erreichen, wobei das Nähgut auf Grund der Scherwirkung zwischen Messerschneide und Gegenschneide festgehalten wird, dann aber das Nähgut wieder frei beweglich ist und seinen Vorschubschritten unterworfen werden kann. Mit einer auf den Nähvorschub abgestellten, zu den Vorschubschritten synchronisierten Drehzahl kann daher ein Rotationsmesser als Teil des Schneidwerkzeuges eingesetzt werden, das nicht nur zu einer rationellen und aufwandsarmen Konstruktion führt, sondern auch mit praktisch beliebiger Schnittgeschwindigkeit funktionssicher arbeitet. Da für jeden Schnitt eine Messerschneide der Gegenschneide des Gegenmessers entlanggleiten muß, kann die Drehzahl des Rotationsmessers durch die Anzahl der vorhandenen Schneiden in Abhängigkeit vom Vorschub bzw. von der Stichzahl der Nähnadel beeinflußt werden, wobei die Drehzahl mit zunehmender Schneidenanzahl sinkt. Die Schneiden selbst sind vorzugsweise geradlinig, sie könnten aber auch bogenförmig verlaufen, um spezielle Schnittbedingungen zu berücksichtigen, und auch das Gegenmesser kann unterschiedliche, an die Messerschneiden angepaßte Gegenschneiden bilden sowie als festes Gegenmesser, aber auch als gegensinnig zum Rotationsmesser drehendes Gegenmesser vorgesehen sein.
