Abstract

L'invention a trait à un procédé de fabrication de verre polarisant à large bande et à polarité élevée du contraste dans la zone de l'infrarouge du spectre de rayonnement, et à séparation de phase ou bien doté de propriétés photochromiques reposant sur la présence de cristaux d'halogénures d'argent, de cuivre ou de cuivre au cadmium ou sur celle de leurs combinaisons, ces halogénures étant précipités dans ledit verre, et dont les dimensions sont comprises entre 200 et 5000 angströms. Ce verre est doté d'une couche de surface contenant des particules métalliques allongées d'argent, de cuivre ou de cuivre au cadmium ou constituée par leur mélange. Le procédé consiste à former à chaud de gros cristaux d'halogénure et à les faire précipiter en soumettant l'article en verre à un cycle temps-température au cours duquel la température est au moins de 75 °C au-dessus du point de ramollissement du verre. La figure est une représentation graphique de niveaux de contrainte exprimés en psi versus des longueurs d'ondes centrales (CWL) dans laquelle la longueur d'onde centrale est définie comme étant le centre d'une plage donnée de capacités polarisantes. Plus particulièrement, les niveaux de contrainte requis pour l'obtention d'une longueur d'onde centrale sont rapportés à deux cycles de traitement thermique. La ligne supérieure A représente des données en rapport avec le traitement thermique classique de verres polarisants, 710 °C durant 4 heures et la ligne B représente des données en rapport avec un nouveau traitement thermique, à température élevée, soit à 750 °C durant 8 heures.
