Description

The present invention relates to a lock, mountable on the top rail of doors, especially sliding doors, which is openable and closeable from the opposite sides thereof and comprises a lock housing, a lock bolt, a lock operating lever, provided with a lengthwise slot for accommodating a cross-in of the lock bolt, and a pivoted axle, said lock housing having a channel for the lock bolt.
In sliding doors and the like, intended for public use, it is important for security reasons and in terms of functionality that the locking and opening of a door can be performed from either side of the door in a simple and reliable fashion. Furthermore, it is desirable that the lock mechanism be as compact as possible and the lock as a whole be narrow, such that it is readily and inconspicuously mountable on a door.
An object of the present invention is to provide a lock which is simple in terms of its mechanism and reliable in terms of its operation and which is openable from either side of a door with a lock-fitting key.
The lock of the invention is characterized in that the lock bolt includes in its end inside the housing an elongated recess provided with the cross-pin, said recess accommodating the unfixed end of the lock operating lever, the other end of said operating lever being pivotably linked to the lock housing by way of a pivoted axle, having both of its ends, to which there is an access from either side of the lock housing, designed in conformation with a key to the lock, and that the lock bolt is provided with two crosswise grooves for a lock member, the relative distance of said grooves corresponding to the displacement of the locking bolt between a locking position and a non-locking position.
In order to secure a locking and unlocking position for the lock, the lock bolt is provided with two crosswise grooves, in which a locking member, preferably a spring-loaded ball member, included in the lock presses in the locked or opened bolt position and secures immobilization of the bolt.
The housing is split, hence being primarily constituted by two components. The distance between the components can be adjusted by means of a screw arranged there between.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference made to the accompanying drawings, in which
fig. 1
shows a lock of the invention in cross-section, with a lock bolt in a locked position,
fig. 2
shows the mechanism of fig. 1, yet a lock bolt 2 in a retracted position,
fig. 3
shows the lock of fig. 1 in a plan view,
fig. 4
shows the mechanism of fig. 1 in a lateral view,
figs. 5 and 6
illustrate a lock turning spindle in an end view and in a lateral view, respectively,
fig. 7
shows a lock housing element in a lateral view, and
fig. 8
illustrates a lock bolt.
The lock of the invention comprises a rectangular flat element 1, which is provided with a slit extending almost across the entire element. In one corner of the housing element remains a part connecting the components (shown in figs. 1 and 2 as a ruled section in the top left-hand corner). Adjacent to the other side of this lock housing 1 is a cross-sectionally circular channel 15 for an elongated lock bolt 2. From the bottom end of the lock bolt 2 to the proximity of the mid-point of the bolt extends an elongated recess 8, with a cross-pin 9 in its bottom portion. On either side of this pin 9 are positioned two legs of the unfixed end of the lock operating lever 3, constituted by a slot 7 made in the end of the lever. The other end of the operating lever 3 is fastened to a pivoted axle 4, said axle being in turn pivotably linked to the lock housing 1 by way of bearing elements 13. In the illustrated embodiment, both ends of the axle are provided with a triangular spigot member, which remains exposed on either side of the housing and which is intended for a matching key. Thus, the pivoted lever can be operated from either side of the lock.
The lock bolt 2 is further provided with two crosswise grooves 11. When the lock bolt 2 is in an extended position (fig. 1), the lower groove 11 will receive a spring-loaded locking member 12 (fig. 3) for keeping the bolt in a a top locking position and for securing this position. In a retracted position (fig. 2), the locking member 2 presses into the upper locking groove of the bolt, thus keeping the bolt immobilized in the retracted position.
Operation of the lock can be regulated by adjusting the slit width by means of a screw 10 connecting the housing components.
The lock is assembled by placing the operating lever 3 in a slit 1 present in the lock housing. The operating lever 3 has its non-slotted end provided with a hexagonal hole, said hole being positioned in register with a hole made for the pivoted lever of the lock housing 1. The pivoted axle 4, both ends of which are provided with triangular protrusions and the mid-section of the axle carries a hexagonal flange, is fitted in the hole present in the housing 1 in such a manner that the hexagonal flange 5 pushes into the respective hole made therefor in the operating lever 3.
The hole made in the housing above the pivoted axle 4 and extending diagonally towards the channel 5 of the lock bolt 2 is provided with a ball 12 functioning as the locking member. Below this locking member is provided another hole, which extends through the housing and which is adapted to accommodate the screw 10 connecting the housing components, which can be tightened or loosened for adjusting the distance of the housing components from each other.
The channel 15 is adapted to receive the lock bolt 2 in such a way that the legs of the unfixed end of the operating lever 3 settle on either side of a cross-pin 9 of the slot 7 present in the bolt 2.
The bearing elements 13, which are threadingly fastened to the lock housing 1, are dimensioned such that the outer portion of a hole 14 present in the mid-section thereof is larger in its diameter than the inner portion closer to the lock housing 1. Through this hole 14 extends the end of the pivoted axle, such that the triangular spigots remain exposed. By virtue of the expanded outer portion of the hole 14, there will be a sufficient amount of space around the spigots 6 of the pivoted axle 4 for inserting a key on top of the spigot ends in order to turn the pivoted axle for opening or closing the lock by the same action.
