Abstract

Daylight packaging for photographic paper supplied in the form of large rolls having a width which corresponds with the format of the photographs to be printed, comprises a core sleeve onto which the photographic paper is wound; two circular side flanges heat sealed to the core sleeve to form a reel; and a leader attached at one end to the outer end of the paper and free at the other end, the leader being heat sealed to the side flanges at the outer periphery to seal the package. The side flanges have a multi-layer structure comprising a paper support e.g. about 130 mu m thick, at least one black-coloured layer as light barrier, at least one aluminium layer as vapour barrier, at least one layer serving to increase the resistance to puncturing, at least one layer furthest separated from the paper support to enable the flanges to be heat sealed to the leader and to the core sleeve, and on the other side of the paper support, a layer of a synthetic resin applied by extrusion which imparts a tension to the material to prevent the flanges collapsing inwards.

Description

Photographic paper is often used in the form of large rolls, the width of which corresponds to the width of the desired image format, e.g. 7, 10, 13 cm etc. The rolls are packed light-tight. In order to be able to use them, they are usually placed in a cassette which is connected to the processing machine. To avoid any pre-exposure, even at the edges of the picture, the paper roll must be inserted into the cassette while removing the packaging material in the dark.

Inserting the paper roll into the cassette in the dark is annoying, prone to errors and often, e.g. not possible with so-called minilabs, because these processing machines with small capacities are often installed where there are no black-out rooms in the immediate vicinity.

Diese Verpackung ist wie folgt gestaltet:In order to remedy this deficiency, a daylight packaging (DLL from "daylight-loading") has been developed, in which the roll together with the packaging material is inserted into the cassette. This packaging is designed as follows:

The photo paper is wrapped on a round paper tube. A round, opaque flange, which corresponds to the size of the roll and has a round opening in the middle corresponding to the sleeve, is attached to the right and left and welded along its opening to the edge of the sleeve. An opaque jacket is sealed to the end of the photo paper, wrapped around the photo paper and welded at its edges to the round edges of the flanges.

When inserting it into the cassette, proceed in such a way that the free end of the outer jacket protrudes from the cassette mouth.

After inserting it into the cassette, the outer side of the outer side of the outer side of the outer side of the outer side of the outer side of the outer side of the outer side of the outer side of the outer side of the outer side of the outer side of the outer side of the case is pulled out of the cassette. The cassette can then be docked to the copier and copying can begin.

Das Material für die Flansche ist aus mehreren Schichten aufgebaut:The material for the flanges is made up of several layers:

Die auf das Papier folgenden Schichten haben zusammen z.B. eine Stärke von 120 µm.Outside is e.g. an approximately 130 µm thick paper layer is provided as a support; This is followed by at least one black-colored layer as a light barrier, at least one aluminum layer as a vapor barrier, at least one layer that increases the puncture resistance and furthest away from the paper carrier a layer that enables welding to the jacket or the paper sleeve. The layers following the paper together have e.g. a thickness of 120 µm.

Although this packaging fulfills all requirements for easy handling, light tightness and resistance to puncturing, it shows a serious disadvantage, because with certain exposure machines (printers), when the photo paper is largely unrolled, the outer areas of the flanges fall inwards and become rewound of the photo paper wrapped with. Apart from possible damage, the winding diameter of the photo paper rolls is larger than the corresponding paper length. In the case of printers with a remaining length determination, incorrect remaining lengths are then reported.

The object of the invention was to avoid this disadvantage.

This object is achieved in that a e.g. 20 to 60 µm thick layer of a synthetic polymer is applied by extrusion. This layer, which is preferably made of polyethylene, gives the material a tension which prevents the flange from collapsing inwards.

The plastic layer is preferably 30 to 50 μm thick and consists of HDPE (high density poly ethylene).

In a preferred embodiment, a heat-resistant varnish is also applied to the polymer layer in order to prevent the polymer layer from melting when the flange and outer jacket are welded together.
