Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention
  • The present invention relates in general to a device and method for band knife cutting and, more particularly, to an improvement in such device and method for cutting the sides of a book by an endless band knife fed at a constant velocity and for allowing the cut side surfaces of the book to be directly coated with gold or silver paint without performing any polishing step after cutting the book.
  • 2. Description of the Prior Art
  • As well known to those skilled in the art, the leaves of a book are bonded together at one side thereof prior to covering the book in order to bind the book. The leaves of the book can be thus prevented from missing. The liners of the book covers are typically made of soft cloth or leather thereby not only preventing the covers from being separated from the book but also allowing the leaves to be smoothly turned over.
  • In addition, the three sides of the book except for the bonded side may be additionally polished and coated with gold or silver paint. The gold or silver-coated sides of the book prevent the printed leaves from fading and from being worm-eaten.
  • The gold or silver-coated sides of the book also may represent authority of the book.
  • In order to form a book with the gold or silver-coated sides, the three sides of the book except for the bonded side are primarily cut by a cutter.
  • The cut side surfaces of the book are, thereafter, repeatedly polished using different sandpapers of 120, 320, 420, 600 and 1000 meshes. While polishing the cut side surfaces of the book, the sandpapers are orderly used in order of 120, 320, 420, 600 and 1000 meshes. The polished surfaces of the book in turn are coated with gold or silver paint.
  • However, the above method has the following problem. That is, the three sides of the bound book are primarily cut by the cutter prior to polishing the cut side surfaces using sandpapers having different meshes. The above method is thus complex and thereby reduces the operational efficiency and productivity. This reduces competitiveness.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a device and method for band knife cutting in which the above problems can be overcome and which cut the sides of a book by an endless band knife, wrapped about drive pulleys and fed at a constant velocity, and provide smooth and polished side surfaces of the book thereby allowing the cut side surfaces of the book to be directly coated with gold or silver paint without performing any polishing step after cutting the book.
  • It is another object of the present invention to provide a device and method for band knife cutting which allows the cut side surfaces of a book to be directly coated with gold or silver paint without performing any polishing step after cutting the book, thereby removing the typical polishing step from the process and simplifying the process.
  • In order to accomplish the above objects, the present invention provides a band knife cutting device for cutting a book comprising a frame, a pair of drive pulleys provided on both ends of the frame and rotated by the rotating force of a drive motor transmitted thereto through a reduction gear, an endless band knife wrapped about the drive pulleys and rotated by the rotating motion of the drive pulleys in order to cut the book, a cutting unit provided on the frame and adapted for reciprocating the book relative to the frame above the band knife while clamping the book by a clamp, and first to third polishing units placed on predetermined portions of the frame and adapted for grinding the edge of the band knife in order to maintain an optimal cutting condition of the band knife.
  • The cutting unit comprises a slider guide having a dovetail groove. A slider with the clamp has a dovetail which slidably engages with the dovetail groove. The slider is connected to the slider guide by an actuator thereby reciprocating relative to the slider guide by pressurized oil applied to the actuator. The actuator is connected to the slider guide and slider at its piston rod and cylinder respectively and adapted for moving the slider relative to the guide by the pressurized oil applied to the cylinder.
  • The second grinding unit comprises top and bottom grinders adapted for grinding top and bottom edges of the knife. Each grinder includes a lifting member movably mounted to a base so as to vertically move along the base by an adjusting screw. The grinder also includes a pressing member which is mounted to the lifting member. The pressing member moves along a guide rod and biased by a spring. A grinding stone is mounted to the pressing member. The grinding stone is rotated by the rotating motion of the band knife.
  • The present invention also provides a band knife cutting method for cutting a book comprising the step of gradually moving a side of the book so as to cause the book to cross an endless band knife while feeding the band knife at a constant feeding velocity thereby uniformly and smoothly cutting the side of the book.

    DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
  • Fig. 1 is a view showing the construction of a band knife cutting device according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. As shown in the drawing, the band knife cutting device of this invention includes a pair of drive pulleys, that is, first and second pulleys 16, which are provided on both ends of a frame 10. An endless band knife 14 is wrapped about the pulleys 16 and guided by a plurality of knife guides 12. The band knife cutting device also includes a drive motor 18 which is provided on one side of the second drive pulley 16. The motor 18 is provided with a reduction gear 17. The above reduction gear 17 and second drive pulley 16 are provided with sprockets which are connected together by a chain 19 thereby transmitting the rotating force of the motor 18 to the second drive pulley 16.
  • A cutting unit 24 is provided on the frame 10. The above cutting unit 24 feeds a book 20 to the band knife 14 using pneumatic or hydraulic force while clamping the book 20 by a clamp 22. The above cutting device further includes first to third grinding units 26, 28 and 30 which are placed on the frame 10 relative to the band knife 14. The above grinding units 26, 28 and 30 sharpen the edge of the band knife 14 while the band knife 14 rotates.
  • As shown in Figs. 2A and 2B, the cutting unit 24 includes a slider guide 240 which is placed on the frame 10. The above unit 24 also includes a reciprocating slider 242 which is operated by an actuator 244. The clamp 22 is provided in the above slider 242.
  • The above slider guide 240 and slider 242 have a dovetail groove 246 and a dovetail 248, respectively. The dovetail 248 of the slider 242 movably engages with the dovetail groove 246 of the guide 240 so the slider 242 linearly reciprocates on the frame 10 under the guide of the dovetail groove 246.
  • The piston rod 244a of the actuator 244 is fixed to the slider guide 240, while the cylinder 244b of the actuator 244 is fixed to the reciprocating slider 242. Therefore, the slider 242 linearly reciprocates relative to the slider guide 240 by pressurized oil applied to the cylinder 244b.
  • A plurality of regularly-spaced stoppers 247 are placed on the frame 10 in front of the cutting unit 24. The above stoppers 247 prevent the cut surfaces of the book 20 from being thrust forward. Each stopper 247 is provided with one adjusting screw 249 which may be tightened or loosened in order to adjust the gap and height of the band knife 14.
  • The first to third grinding units 26, 28 and 30 used for sharpening the edge of the band knife 14 are shown in Figs. 1 to 6B.
  • As shown in Figs. 1 and 2B, the first grinding unit 26 is provided on a lower knife guide 12 which is placed under the cutting unit 24. The above first grinding unit 26 comprises a pair of grinding stones, that is, top and bottom stones 26a, which grind the edge of the band knife 14. The above grinding stones 26a are positioned relative to the knife 14 in order to be perpendicular to the moving direction of the knife 14 and to be out of line.
  • As shown in Fig. 3, the second grinding unit 28 comprises two grinders, that is, top and bottom grinders, which grind the top and bottom edges of the knife 14. Each grinder of the second grinding unit 28 includes a lifting member 281 which is movably mounted to a base 280. The above lifting member 281 can vertically move along the base 280 by an adjusting screw 282. A pressing member 285 is mounted to the lifting member 281. The above pressing member 285 moves along a guide rod 283 and is biased by a spring 284. A grinding stone 286 is mounted to the pressing member 285. The above grinding stone 286 is rotated by the rotating motion of the band knife 14.
  • The third grinding unit 30 grinds the edge of the band knife 14 thereby maintaining the edge angle of the knife 14.
  • The above third grinding unit 30 comprises a column 31 which extends from the frame 10. The unit 30 also includes an angle adjusting tip 32 which adjusts the edge angle of the band knife 14. The above tip 32 is mounted to the top portion of the column 31.
  • The above unit 30 further includes an adjusting lever 33 which adjusts the orientation of the tip 32 thereby adjusting the edge angle of the knife 14 in accordance with a use of the knife 14. The adjusting tip 32 is biased by a spring 34 so the frictional force generated between the tip 32 and knife 14 can be reduced.
  • The band knife cutting process according to the present invention will be described hereinbelow.
  • Figs. 7A and 7B show the operation of the band knife cutting device of the invention.
  • As shown in the drawings, the drive motor 18 with the reduction gear 17 starts to generate the rotating force when it is applied with electric power. The rotating force of the motor 18 is transmitted to the endless band knife 14 wrapped about the drive pulley 16 thereby rotating the knife 14.
  • While the band knife 14 is rotated by the rotating force of the motor 18, the grinding stones 16a of the first grinding unit 26 grind the edge of the knife 14. In addition, the grinding stones 286 of the second grinding unit 28 are rotated by the rotating force of the knife 14 and grind the top and bottom edges of the knife 14 at a predetermined edge angle.
  • The angle adjusting tip 32 of the third grinding unit 30 adjusts the edge angle and grinds the edge of the knife 14 which has been ground by the grinding stones 26a and 286 of the first and second grinding units 26 and 28.
  • The book 20 is clamped by the clamp 22 of the cutting device 24 such that the side to be cut is directed downward. The pressured oil is applied to the cylinder 244b of the actuator 244.
  • As the piston rod 244a of the actuator 244 is received in the cylinder 244b, the slider 242 gradually moves forward under the guide of the dovetail groove 246 of the slider guide 240 thereby crossing the band knife 14.
  • As the book 20 clamped by the clamp 22 of the cutting device comes into contact with the cutting edge 15 of the band knife 14, the book 20 is cut by the knife 14.
  • In the above state, the band knife 14 may be resisted by the book 20 thereby being thrust toward the front of the frame 10. However, the thrusting of the knife 14 can be prevented by the stopper 247 of the cutting device so the book 20 can be smoothly cut by the knife 14. The cutdust (not shown) of the book 20 is collected by a dust container (not shown) placed under the frame 10.
  • When the book 20 clamped by the clamp 22 of the slider 242 completely passes the band knife 14, the three sides of the book 20 are completely cut.
  • After cutting the three sides of the book 20, the cutting unit 24 returns to its original state. That is, when the book 20 clamped by the clamp 22 of the slider 242 has been completely cut, the cutting unit 24 returns to its original state. In order to return the cutting unit 24 to its original state, the oil supplying direction for the actuator 244 is reversed thereby causing the piston rod 244a to extend from the cylinder 244b of the actuator 244. Therefore, the slider 242 gradually retracts toward the back of the frame 10 under the guide of the dovetail groove 246 of the slider guide 240 while crossing the band knife 14.
  • As described above, the book 20 is smoothly cut by the band knife 14 of this invention which is fed at a constant velocity by the drive pulleys 16. It is thus possible to smoothly cut the three sides of the book 20 and to provide the uniformly and smoothly cut surfaces of the book 20.
  • After cutting the three sides of the book 20, the book 20 is released from the clamp 22 of the slider 242. The three cut surfaces of the book 20 are, thereafter, directly coated with gold or silver paint.
  • In accordance with the band knife cutting device and method of the present invention, the band knife 14 cuts the book 20 while being fed at a constant feeding velocity differently from the typical cutting device and method in which the book has to be repeatedly polished after being cut. The cutting device and method of the present invention thus provide smooth cutting surfaces of the book thereby allowing the cut surfaces of the book to be directly coated with gold or silver paint without performing any post-process.
  • In accordance with the present invention, the cut surfaces of the book 20 are directly coated with the gold or silver paint after the book 20 has been cut by the band knife 14. Therefore, the band knife cutting device and method of the present invention do not need the typical polishing step thereby simplifying the process and reducing the processing time. In addition, the present invention reduces the cost and increases competitiveness.
  • As described above, the present invention provides a band knife cutting device and method which smoothly cut the book by a band knife wrapped about drive pulleys and fed at a constant feeding velocity. The cut surfaces of the book are directly coated with gold or silver paint without performing any post-process after cutting the book. In this regard, the band knife cutting device and method of the present invention do not need the typical polishing step thereby simplifying the process and reducing the processing time. The cutting device and method of the present invention thus improve the operational efficiency and productivity reduces the cost, and increases competitiveness.
  • Although the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been disclosed for illustrative purposes, those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications, additions and substitutions are possible, without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as disclosed in the accompanying claims.
