Description
- The present invention relates in general to a device and method for band knife cutting and, more particularly, to an improvement in such device and method for cutting the sides of a book by an endless band knife fed at a constant velocity and for allowing the cut side surfaces of the book to be directly coated with gold or silver paint without performing any polishing step after cutting the book.
- As well known to those skilled in the art, the leaves of a book are bonded together at one side thereof prior to covering the book in order to bind the book. The leaves of the book can be thus prevented from missing. The liners of the book covers are typically made of soft cloth or leather thereby not only preventing the covers from being separated from the book but also allowing the leaves to be smoothly turned over.
- In addition, the three sides of the book except for the bonded side may be additionally polished and coated with gold or silver paint. The gold or silver-coated sides of the book prevent the printed leaves from fading and from being worm-eaten.
- The gold or silver-coated sides of the book also may represent authority of the book.
- In order to form a book with the gold or silver-coated sides, the three sides of the book except for the bonded side are primarily cut by a cutter.
- The cut side surfaces of the book are, thereafter, repeatedly polished using different sandpapers of 120, 320, 420, 600 and 1000 meshes. While polishing the cut side surfaces of the book, the sandpapers are orderly used in order of 120, 320, 420, 600 and 1000 meshes. The polished surfaces of the book in turn are coated with gold or silver paint.
- However, the above method has the following problem. That is, the three sides of the bound book are primarily cut by the cutter prior to polishing the cut side surfaces using sandpapers having different meshes. The above method is thus complex and thereby reduces the operational efficiency and productivity. This reduces competitiveness.
- It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a device and method for band knife cutting in which the above problems can be overcome and which cut the sides of a book by an endless band knife, wrapped about drive pulleys and fed at a constant velocity, and provide smooth and polished side surfaces of the book thereby allowing the cut side surfaces of the book to be directly coated with gold or silver paint without performing any polishing step after cutting the book.
- It is another object of the present invention to provide a device and method for band knife cutting which allows the cut side surfaces of a book to be directly coated with gold or silver paint without performing any polishing step after cutting the book, thereby removing the typical polishing step from the process and simplifying the process.

- The cutting unit comprises a slider guide having a dovetail groove. A slider with the clamp has a dovetail which slidably engages with the dovetail groove. The slider is connected to the slider guide by an actuator thereby reciprocating relative to the slider guide by pressurized oil applied to the actuator. The actuator is connected to the slider guide and slider at its piston rod and cylinder respectively and adapted for moving the slider relative to the guide by the pressurized oil applied to the cylinder.
- The second grinding unit comprises top and bottom grinders adapted for grinding top and bottom edges of the knife. Each grinder includes a lifting member movably mounted to a base so as to vertically move along the base by an adjusting screw. The grinder also includes a pressing member which is mounted to the lifting member. The pressing member moves along a guide rod and biased by a spring. A grinding stone is mounted to the pressing member. The grinding stone is rotated by the rotating motion of the band knife.
- The present invention also provides a band knife cutting method for cutting a book comprising the step of gradually moving a side of the book so as to cause the book to cross an endless band knife while feeding the band knife at a constant feeding velocity thereby uniformly and smoothly cutting the side of the book.

The cutdust (not shown) of thebook 20 is collected by a dust container (not shown) placed under theframe 10. - When the
book 20 clamped by theclamp 22 of theslider 242 completely passes theband knife 14, the three sides of thebook 20 are completely cut. - After cutting the three sides of the
book 20, the cuttingunit 24 returns to its original state. That is, when thebook 20 clamped by theclamp 22 of theslider 242 has been completely cut, the cuttingunit 24 returns to its original state. In order to return thecutting unit 24 to its original state, the oil supplying direction for theactuator 244 is reversed thereby causing thepiston rod 244a to extend from thecylinder 244b of theactuator 244. Therefore, theslider 242 gradually retracts toward the back of theframe 10 under the guide of thedovetail groove 246 of theslider guide 240 while crossing theband knife 14. - As described above, the
book 20 is smoothly cut by theband knife 14 of this invention which is fed at a constant velocity by the drive pulleys 16. It is thus possible to smoothly cut the three sides of thebook 20 and to provide the uniformly and smoothly cut surfaces of thebook 20. - After cutting the three sides of the
book 20, thebook 20 is released from theclamp 22 of theslider 242. The three cut surfaces of thebook 20 are, thereafter, directly coated with gold or silver paint. - In accordance with the band knife cutting device and method of the present invention, the
band knife 14 cuts thebook 20 while being fed at a constant feeding velocity differently from the typical cutting device and method in which the book has to be repeatedly polished after being cut. The cutting device and method of the present invention thus provide smooth cutting surfaces of the book thereby allowing the cut surfaces of the book to be directly coated with gold or silver paint without performing any post-process. - In accordance with the present invention, the cut surfaces of the
book 20 are directly coated with the gold or silver paint after thebook 20 has been cut by theband knife 14.
