Abstract

The heating strip (4), at least on its surface (11) facing the overlapping seam, is made of ceramic material. Inside the strip is an electrical heating conductor (6), made from electrical current-conductive ceramic material. The heating strip, at least between the heating conductor and the surface (11), is of heat-conducting ceramic. The heating strip of ceramic material comprises several sections (4a,4b), the temperatures of which are separately controllable. The temperature of the heating strip in the movement direction of the overlapping seam reduces sectionally or continuously. The ceramic material for increasing its heat conductivity is coated with tantalum nitride.

Description

The invention relates to a device for heating the glued overlap seam of a strand of the tobacco processing industry, in particular a cigarette rod, with a heated heating strip, along which the overlap seam is moved while being touched.
Strands of the tobacco processing industry are to be understood as strands in which wrapping material strips envelop smoke material such as tobacco, in particular for the production of cigarettes, or filter material. Devices of this type, also called "seam flattening" in technical terms, are used in strand machines to transfer heat to the so-called glue seam or overlap seam, that is to say the glued overlapping area of an edge of a wrapping strip which is moved past, in order, for example, to solidify the glue (in the case of water-based glues) or liquefy (for hot melt adhesives). The heated bar is usually in contact with the glue seam.
The known seam plates have metallic heating strips, which are usually heated by heating cartridges which are relatively distant. As a result, the latter must have a high thermal output. This easily leads to overheating when a strand machine is stopped and hypothermia when starting up.
Both operating states are harmful because there is a risk of damage to the wrapping strip in the event of overheating, and the risk of the overlap seam opening in the event of hypothermia. In addition, the energy losses due to undesired heat radiation are high. Finally, the temperature control of the heating bar is also difficult due to the thermal inertia. When using conventional metal heating strips, there is also a risk of warping with the unavoidable temperature fluctuations.
A seam plate has become known from US Pat. No. 3,575,766, in which the heat is transferred from a thin strip of electrically conductive material to the overlap seam of a cigarette rod, the heat being generated directly in the strip by resistance heating.

The object on which the invention is based is to provide a heating strip which differs from the previously known and used seam plates.

According to the invention, this is achieved in that the heating strip, at least on its surface facing the overlap seam, consists of ceramic material. The heating strip preferably consists of heat-conducting ceramic material.
Further developments and further refinements of the invention can be found in the subordinate claims.

The invention has several notable advantages. As a result of the higher thermal conductivity of the heat-conducting ceramic material and the resulting lower thermal inertia, the dead and transition times for changes in the heating requirement are smaller than in the case of conventional seam plates, so that the adaptation times of the effective surface temperatures of the heating strip are also improved. The risk of damaging overheating when a strand machine with the heating strip according to the invention is stopped as a result of the setpoint temperatures being exceeded is reduced, as is the risk of harmful supercooling when starting up as a result of setpoint temperatures which have not yet been reached.

The total installed electrical heating power can be reduced, which also reduces the energy losses and the associated undesired heating of the entire seam plate. The degree of radiation of the ceramic is very good, which results in a high heat output with a small surface area and thus a shortening of the heating distance.
Finally, the wear resistance of the heating strip, on which the overlap seam of the strand to be consolidated continuously grinds, is increased. The delay which occurs in the metal heating strips which have been customary to date as a result of the high temperature fluctuations either does not occur at all or only to an innocuous extent.

The invention is explained in more detail using an exemplary embodiment.

Figur 2
einen Schnitt nach Linie A-A in Figur 1.
Show it:
Figure 1
part of a seam plate with a ceramic heating strip on an enlarged scale,
Figure 2
a section along line AA in Figure 1.

A seam plate 1 for a cigarette machine, not shown, has two sections 1a, 1b in the exemplary embodiment. It can contain other sections or just consist of a single piece. Sections 1a and 1b have housings 2a and 2b, respectively, which contain interiors 3a and 3b, which are sealed with a cross-hatched sealant, e.g. B. a heat-resistant foam are filled. At the lower end of sections 1a, 1b there are heating strips 4a and 4b made of heat-conducting ceramic material.
For this, ceramics, the z. B. of silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ), doped with suitable additives, such as. B. with tantalum nitride. Heating conductors 6 are used for heating in the interior of the heating strip sections 4a and 4b, which may consist of metal that conducts electricity.
However, ceramic heating elements 6, which are embedded in the heat-conducting ceramic 4a or 4b and are fully enclosed by the latter, are more advantageous. Terminals 7a1, 7a2 and 7b1 and bushings 8a1, 8a2 and 8b1 are used to supply the heating conductor 6 with electrical energy. Another connection terminal and a further feed-through are in reality beyond the fault line. A bolt 9a is used to fasten the seam plate 1 to a strand machine (not shown); in reality, a second bolt is located on the right, invisible end of the seam plate beyond the break line.
Basically, it would be sufficient to achieve a number of the advantages described according to the invention if only the area of the surface 11a, 11b of the heating strip 4a or 4b consists of ceramic material, which is preferably designed to be thermally conductive.
For the purpose of monitoring the temperatures of the heating strip sections 4a, 4b, they are provided with heat sensors 12a and 12b, the output signals of which supply the energy in a known manner to control the heating conductors 6 in the sense of maintaining the desired temperatures. The individual sections 4a, 4b of the heating strip can be regulated to different temperatures in accordance with the requirements of the strand formation. It is particularly advantageous to have the temperatures decrease in the direction of movement of the glue seam, because more drying power has to be applied at the beginning of the drying section than at the end.
Instead of dividing the seam plate and thus the heating strip into different sections 1a, 1b and 4a, 4b, each of which is regulated separately to the desired temperatures, the surface 11 of a single heating strip 4 can be given a desired heat profile in that the thermal conductivity increases preferably changes continuously, ie for example decreases in the direction of the strand movement.
In the drawing, the cigarette rod z with the glued overlap seam n to be heated is shown only schematically on one edge of the wrapping strip u. However, the aforementioned US Pat. No. 3,575,766 shows a part of a cigarette rod machine with a gluing device for an edge of the cigarette paper strip to form the glued overlap seam and a downstream heating device, the latter, however, being fundamentally different from the invention.
