Abstract

The arrester is used on a cylindrical cartridge containing a propellant charge (8) designed to fire an artillery projectile. The arrester has a skirt (3) which is made in one piece or several sections. The skirt has a diameter greater than that of the cartridge (6) or the chamber (9) of the artillery piece. The skirt flexes as the cartridge is inserted into the chamber, holding the cartridge in place. The skirt has a tubular section (2) which fits against the outer wall of the cartridge with a projecting ring (4) to engage with a similar ring on the cartridge wall, and a flared end of greater diameter. It can be made from a combustible material or one which fragments on firing, e.g. high density polyethylene or polyamide.

Description

The technical field of the invention is that of retainers for an artillery propellant charge case.

The artillery propellant charges today consist of a case, made of combustible material, and inside which is placed a propellant powder in bulk or in bundles.

These cases are intended to be introduced inside the chamber of a weapon, following a projectile.

When the weapon is adjusted so as to fire with a large angle of elevation (of the order of 45 °), the propellant case may slide at least partially out of the chamber before it is closed by the shooting plate, thus disrupting the closing and possibly causing shooting incidents.

Known solutions making it possible to prevent the propellant charge from leaving the chamber generally provide for specific machining of the chamber.

This is most often achieved a hollow (called a spoon) or a cylindrical machining slightly offset from the chamber. This hollow or this cylindrical surface is delimited on the side of the firing plate by a bearing surface which retains the propellant charge inside the chamber.

Such solutions are well suited to maintaining propellant charges in flexible bags. On the other hand, they are ineffective in maintaining current cylindrical cases, the rigidity of which is such that they ensure their positioning in a manner substantially coaxial with the chamber, thus preventing them from being pressed into the hollow or the holding spoon.

It is the object of the invention to propose a stopper for a propellant charge case which does not have such drawbacks.

Thus, the stopper according to the invention is carried by the case itself and it makes it possible to ensure the axial maintenance of the case in the chamber of the weapon even when the case is coaxial with the chamber.

Due to its connection with the case, the retainer according to the invention ensures such maintenance whatever the geometry of the chamber, in particular even if the chamber of the weapon is devoid of holding means.

It is another object of the invention to provide a removable retainer which may or may not be attached to the case as required.

Thus, the subject of the invention is a stopper for a propellant charge case, case comprising a cylindrical envelope intended to contain a propellant charge and to be introduced into the chamber of a weapon, stopper characterized in that it comprises a skirt, continuous or formed of several sectors, skirt of diameter greater than that of the envelope and that of the chamber and intended to be fixed to the case by connecting means, this skirt deforming during the introduction of the holster in the chamber of the weapon so as to maintain the holster in the chamber.

According to a first embodiment of the invention, the retainer comprises a tubular portion intended to surround the envelope of the case, tubular portion which carries the connecting means.

The connecting means may include at least one cylindrical bead carried by the tubular portion and intended to cooperate with a complementary bead carried by the envelope of the case.

The tubular portion may include at least two slots regularly distributed angularly and allowing the establishment by elastic deformation of the bead of the retainer on the bead of the envelope.

Advantageously, the bead of the retainer may have an external diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the chamber of the weapon.

According to a second embodiment of the invention, the retainer comprises at least one flat face substantially normal to the axis of the skirt, square face intended to be applied against a bottom of the case and carrying the means of liaison.

The connecting means may include at least two tabs cut on the flat face and intended to cooperate with notches carried by the bottom of the case.

Preferably, the stopper according to the invention will be made of a combustible material.

The invention also relates to a case for propellant charge provided with such a retainer whether it is removable or not.

The invention will be better understood on reading the description which follows of particular embodiments, description made with reference to the appended drawings and in which:
  • FIG. 1 shows a half-view / axial half-section of a retainer according to a first embodiment of the invention,
  • FIGS. 2a and 2b show in half-section this retainer put in place on a propellant charge case and respectively before and after introduction into the chamber of a weapon,
  • FIGS. 3a and 3b represent a stopper according to a second embodiment of the invention, FIG. 3a being a front view and FIG. 3b an axial section of the previous one along the plane AA,
  • FIG. 4 shows this retainer put in place on a propellant charge case,
  • Figures 5a and 5b show in half-section this retainer put in place on a propellant charge case and respectively before and after introduction into the chamber of a weapon.

If reference is made to FIG. 1, a retainer 1 according to a first embodiment of the invention comprises a tubular portion 2 extended by a skirt 3.

The tubular portion 2 is intended to surround the envelope of a propellant charge case (not shown) and its internal diameter is therefore substantially equal to the external diameter of the case.

The skirt 3 has an external diameter greater than that of the tubular portion 2. It has a slightly conical shape flared towards a rear part (AR) of the retainer.

The tubular portion 2 carries a cylindrical bead 4 as well as longitudinal slots 5, regularly distributed angularly, and arranged so as to give a certain radial elasticity to the tubular portion 2, at the level of the bead 4.

This stopper is made of a combustible material, such as a cardboard loaded or not with nitrocellulose, and it is intended to be fixed to a case 6 of propellant charge as shown in Figures 2a and 2b.

The case 6 comprises a cylindrical envelope 7 closed by a bottom 11 and intended to contain a propellant charge 8. The case 6 is intended to be introduced into the chamber 9 of a weapon (not shown in details).

Casing and bottom are made of combustible material.

The cylindrical envelope 7 also carries a bead 10, which may be continuous over the entire circumference of the envelope or else discontinuous.

Le bourrelet 4 de l'arrêtoir constitue un moyen de liaison entre l'arrêtoir et l'étui 6.The bead 4 of the retainer constitutes a means of connection between the retainer and the case 6.

The stopper is fixed to the case by sliding it on the casing 7 of the latter.

Ce dernier vient se loger dans le creux formé par l'intérieur du bourrelet 4 de l'arrêtoir 1.The slots 5 allow the radial deformation of the tubular part 2, thus allowing the passage of the bead 10 of the envelope. The latter is housed in the hollow formed by the inside of the bead 4 of the retainer 1.

The propellant charge case 6 carrying the retainer 1 is introduced into the chamber 9 of the weapon with preferably an orientation such that the bead 4 enters the chamber before the skirt 3, this in order to facilitate the introduction of the stop in the room.

La figure 2b montre l'étui après sa mise en place dans la chambre 9.FIG. 2b shows the case after it has been placed in the chamber 9.

La jupe 3 est définie de telle sorte que son diamètre externe soit supérieur au diamètre de la chambre 9.The skirt 3 is defined so that its external diameter is greater than the diameter of the chamber 9.

The elastic radial deformation of the skirt ensures the maintenance of the contact between the retainer and the chamber.

This contact generates friction and grip forces which allow the axial retention of the holster in the chamber of the weapon when the latter is strongly inclined.

We will define the length of the skirt 3 so as to ensure sufficient friction. In practice, the skirt will be given a length in contact with the chamber of the order of 0.1 times the diameter of the chamber.

Advantageously, the bead 4 will be given an external diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the chamber 9 of the weapon.

Such an arrangement makes it possible to guide the case 6 relative to the chamber. This ensures coaxiality of the case 6 and the chamber at the level of the retainer 1, which allows a substantially symmetrical deformation of the skirt by the chamber, therefore a symmetry of the holding forces.

Contact between the bead 4 and the chamber also makes it possible to lock the retainer on the case. There is then no risk of seeing the stopper separating from the case at the time of introduction into the room or of seeing it detach by a bracing effect.

Such a retainer can be permanently fixed to the case.

It can also be easily separated from the case and only be put in place at the last moment according to operational needs.

Various variants of this embodiment are possible.

Thus, it is possible to provide a stopper made of fragmentable plastic material during firing, for example in High density polyethylene or Polyamide. Provision will be made, if necessary, for ruptures on the retainer to facilitate its destruction during firing.

One can also define a retainer whose skirt is not continuous but formed of several sectors (or fingers) regularly distributed angularly.

Figures 3a and 3b show a stopper 1 according to a second embodiment of the invention.

Like the previous one, this retainer comprises a skirt 3 having a slightly conical shape flared towards a rear part AR of the retainer.

The skirt is connected to a face 13 substantially flat and normal to the axis 14 of the skirt.

La face plane 13 est découpée et porte trois languettes 15 régulièrement réparties angulairementThe flat face 13 is cut and carries three tabs 15 regularly distributed angularly

Cet arrêtoir est réalisé en un matériau combustible, tel un carton chargé ou non de nitrocellulose, et il est destiné à être fixé à un étui 6 de charge propulsive comme représenté à la figure 4.This stopper is made of a combustible material, such as a cardboard loaded or not with nitrocellulose, and it is intended to be fixed to a case 6 of propellant charge as shown in FIG. 4.

La face plane 13 du support 1 est appliquée contre un fond 11 de l'étui 6.The flat face 13 of the support 1 is applied against a bottom 11 of the case 6.

The diameter of the skirt 3 is greater than that of the envelope of the case 6 and it is also chosen to be greater than the diameter of the chamber of the weapon.

The bottom of the case carries three notches 16, regularly angularly distributed, and intended to receive the tongues 15 of the retainer.

The tongues 15 thus constitute a means of connecting the retainer and the case.

The installation of the stopper is carried out as follows:
  • the retainer 1 is positioned with its flat face 13 against the bottom 11 of the case 6, the tongues 15 being arranged alternately with the notches 16 of the bottom 11,
  • the stopper is rotated with respect to the case by an angle (here of the order of 60 °) so as to slide the tongues 15 behind the notches 16.

From the manufacturing point of view, the bottom 11 of the case will preferably be made of a combustible material. In a known manner, the shape of the bottom (and in particular the notches) is obtained by stamping a sheet of combustible material, such as a cardboard loaded with nitrocellulose.

The propellant charge case 6 carrying the retainer 1 is introduced into the chamber 9 of the weapon with an orientation as shown in FIGS. 5a and 5b, that is to say with the skirt 3 penetrating into the chamber 9 after the case 6 itself.

La figure 5b montre l'étui après sa mise en place dans la chambre 9.FIG. 5b shows the case after it has been placed in the chamber 9.

La jupe 3 est définie de telle sorte que son diamètre externe soit supérieur au diamètre de la chambre 9.The skirt 3 is defined so that its external diameter is greater than the diameter of the chamber 9.

The elastic radial deformation of the skirt 3 maintains contact between the retainer and the chamber.

This contact generates friction and grip forces which allow the axial retention of the holster in the chamber of the weapon when the latter is strongly inclined.

In addition, the support of the skirt on the chamber causes an elastic deformation of the flat face 13 held by the notches 16, causing an arching of the skirt which has the effect of increasing the contact pressure between the skirt and the chamber, therefore the rigidity of the axial support.

This variant of the invention makes it possible to maintain the holster for holsters whose external diameter is close to that of the chamber of the weapon.

The length and the taper of the skirt 3 will be defined so as to ensure sufficient holding rigidity.

In practice, the skirt will be given a slope of the order of 20%, the length in contact with the chamber possibly being of the order of 0.1 times the diameter of the chamber.

Again, the retainer can be fixed so permanent on the case, but it can also be easily separated from it and can only be put in place at the last moment according to operational needs.

As a variant, it will be possible to make the stopper made of fragmentable plastic during firing, for example in high density polyethylene or in polyamide. Provision will be made, if necessary, for ruptures on the retainer to facilitate its destruction during firing.

We can also define a stopper whose skirt is not continuous but formed of several sectors (or fingers) regularly distributed angularly.
