Abstract

A process is claimed for the prodn. of a film (I) to form a protective surface layer on a profiled object, in which a base film impregnated with a thermosetting impregnating resin (II) is coated with varnish (III). The novelty is that (a) resin (II) is an aq. condensation resin with a volatiles content of about 50 wt.% during coating, and the impregnated film has a volatiles content of 8-20 wt.% before varnishing; (b) varnish (III) is an aq. system based on an OH gp.-contg. acrylic polymer, polyurethane polymer or polyester copolymer contg. a crosslinker which not only crosslinks the binder but also promotes chemical bonding with resin (II) in the film; and (c) film (I) is dried to a final moisture content of 2-20 (pref. 4-10) wt.% before applying it to the profiled substrate.

Description

The invention relates to a method for producing a film for producing a surface protective layer on a profile body, in which a carrier roll impregnated with a thermosetting impregnating resin is provided with a lacquer layer.

Such a method is known (DE-A-42 10 528). The film produced by the known method can be a paper film impregnated with melamine resin, on which a layer of a polyurethane varnish is arranged.

If the film produced by the known method is used for the coating of a highly structured profile body, for example a profile body in which vertical surfaces are connected to a horizontal surface at an obtuse angle, then the film is subjected to strong mechanical stress, for example shear . The paint of the outer paint layer of the film can either be completely sheared off on partial areas or shifted on the film and thus distributed unevenly. In addition, parts of the paint can flake off or micro-cracks can appear in the paint. In any case, these effects on the lacquer weaken or destroy the protective layer.

The technical problem on which the invention is based is to improve the process for producing the film so that the film becomes more resistant when it is processed further, and the weather resistance of the film is also to be improved.

According to the invention, this technical problem is solved by the following technical features:
  • a) an aqueous condensation resin is used as the impregnating resin, which contains about 50% by weight of volatile constituents in the coating and the impregnated film also contains 8-20% by weight of volatile constituents before the painting process
  • b) the lacquer is an aqueous system composed of an acrylic polymer, polyurethane polymer or polyester copolymer containing OH groups, to which a crosslinking component has been added, which on the one hand crosslinks the lacquer binder and on the other hand mediates a chemical connection with the impregnating resin of the carrier film,
  • c) the film is dried to a final moisture of 2 to 20% by weight, preferably 4 to 10% by weight, before being applied to the profile body.

In the finished film, the condensation resin has dried sufficiently so that it is cured on the profile body after pressing. The paint is also largely cured after drying. The finished film consists of two homogeneous layers, namely the carrier film and the lacquer layer, with the materials being mixed and a chemical reaction taking place in the border area between the homogeneous layers.

Advantageous details of the invention are contained in claims 2 to 5.

The film produced according to the method according to the invention is particularly suitable for imparting long-term weather resistance to profile bodies which are constantly exposed to the weather. The profile bodies can be, for example, compression-molded profiles for balcony or facade cladding, as well as pressed panels and molded chipboard parts such as chipboard, fiberboard or veneer panels. But it can also window sills, window profiles, roof elements, table tops or the like.

The chip or fibrous mixture can be, for example, a non-flowable mixture of comminuted lignocellulosic particles, such as comminuted and dried wood shavings, bagasse fibers and the like, to which a thermosetting binder based on duroplastic, such as a melamine-urea formaldehyde or phenol formaldehyde resin. Instead of the shredded and dried wood or bagasse fibers, fibers of other materials, such as glass fibers, rock wool or asbestos fibers, alone or several of them mixed with one another, to which appropriate, preferably organic, binders have been added can also be used.

In the figure, a device is shown schematically, which is suitable for the production of the coated film. The uncoated film, which consists for example of a paper printed with a pattern, is wound on the roller 1. It is pulled off the roller 1 and pulled through the container 2 filled with impregnating resin. An impregnating resin, for example, is an aqueous solution containing phenolic resin or melamine formaldehyde resin with about 50% by weight of volatile constituents. The impregnated film is dried in the dryer 3 at temperatures of 100-180 degrees Celsius such that it still contains 8-20% by weight of volatile constituents when it leaves the dryer.

A clear or pigmented lacquer is applied in the coating unit 4. The following binder compositions have proven suitable for the paint:
  • 1. 10 kg of a hydroxyl acrylate (M = 1,000,000) with an OH group content of 3% were mixed with 2.9 kg of trimeric hexamethylene diisocyanate.
  • 2. 10 kg of a hydroxyl-containing polyester resin (% OH = 1) with an average molecular weight of 500,000 were mixed with 1.7 kg of an addition product of 3 moles of isophorone diisocyanate and one mole of trimethylolpropane.
  • 3. 10 kg of a hydroxyl group-containing polyurethane with an average molecular weight of 750,000 and a hydroxyl group content of 2.5% were mixed with 3.3 kg of a 1: 1 mixture of polyisophorone diisocyanate (prepared from 3 moles of isophorone diisocyanate and one mole of trimethyl propane) and trimeric hexamethylene diisocyanate.

After painting, the film is passed through the second dryer, where it is dried at temperatures of 100-180 degrees Celsius in such a way that when it leaves this dryer it still contains 2-20, preferably 4-10% by weight of volatile constituents. A chemical reaction, i.e. cross-linking, between the impregnating resin and the paint has taken place in the dryer. The finished coated film is wound on the drum 6.

The lacquer can also contain a lubricant, for example a paraffin. When drying, the lubricant migrates to the surface of the coated film and accumulates there. This gives the coated film better sliding properties, which is advantageous when pressed onto profile bodies.

However, it is also possible to apply a thin layer of a lubricant to the lacquer layer of the coated film. This can be, for example, a thin clear lacquer layer, for example made of a UV-curing polymer, such as acrylate, or a hot-sprayed paraffin.
